I am very picky with chicken and cannot stand dry chicken, but this was impeccably cooked and I ate the whole meal within five minutes. Came on a sunday afternoon, taking a friend for the first time to visit the famous Pepe's Apizza. There was a line outside the door but thankfully we did not have to wait long. We were sat in their annex restaurant, which was a bit of a disappointment as I was hopeful we'd get to eat in the original restaurant, also did not know this annexed building existed. The service was quick and staff nice. The dining area was small and we were sat at the back by the bathrooms so every customer had to walk by and I had to scoot in my chair to let them squeeze by to go to the bathroom. My husband and I stopped in here for a quick drink. Mike was our bartender. We have been traveling for weeks and Mike made us the BEST drinks we have had so far. My husband had a spicy mezcal cocktail (fried gold) that was the perfect balance of spicy, Smokey and sweet. I had a spicy margarita with tajin rim and it was fantastic. Music was on par with the ambiance but the best part was Mike's service and knowledge. Will definitely be back. read more

Stopped by for lunch on a random Thursday; got the 'Purple Rain' drink and the 'Argentine Steak Sandwhich'. Easily the best sandwich I've ever had!!!! The bread was so soft, a generous amount of shaved ribeye, and a very tasty chimichurri/garlic aioli sauce... A must try! My husband got the Buffalo Chicken Caesar wrap and equally enjoyed it. Our company frequently uses the north house for events and the food and venue are always top notch. We recently had a miscommunication when booking the event (our fault) and the staff was able to pivot seamlessly and professionally--huge shoutout to Michelle for being the best bartender. I worked here forever ago, when it was Avon Old Farms Inn. A few years after I left, I returned with a friend and service was so bad, we walked out never to return. Until last week. This new ownership got it right! So many improvements were made to this space, but walking up the front steps was like going back in time for me (the horse is still there!) Kirstin and I came for dinner and had a great meal. Our server forgot a few things but overall, a vast improvement over the last incarnation. We sat in the tavern, lovely large bar space. Kirstin had the potato nachos and I started with the French onion soup and had the beef short ribs. The soup was piping hot, nice flavor. The beef had a nice flavor, albeit maybe a bit salty. Presentation could've used a bit of color but otherwise very enjoyable comfort food. I had to ask for bread (not sure if it's not automatically offered or if she forgot) but ASK FOR BREAD! So delicious, it's addicting.... I'd make it at home if I had the recipe! Used a Yelp check in and got free desserts! Profiteroles and flourless chocolate cake were shared -- holy hell the chocolate cake is so rich you need to share! Another great experience. Place is wonderful. So much charming New England character. The waitress was so attentive. We had the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer. They were cooked perfectly and so much flavor. The bacon was done perfectly. She told us they are put in the oven raw so it takes more time and worth it. We both had the salmon entree served over quinoa with asparagus and a butter sauce it was cooked perfectly. So flavorful and very generous portions. A great role. read more

I came here on a Friday night with my husband to enjoy a happy hour and then dinner. We got there around 5pm and were able to get parking in the lot easily. We were able to get two seats at the bar, but man is it a popular place for happy hour! The specials on the menu are great, particularly the beverages. There were fun cocktails and then plenty of beers on top and some house wine. For dinner we were able to sit near a fireplace in a rustic room, very fun decor. Our waiter Matt was amazing and so friendly, and followed up with us frequently. The food options were good, plenty to choose from and something for everyone. I got the duck and my husband got the short ribs. All delicious. My only critique is that the entrees generally didn't have a lot of vegetables, mainly meat and a carb. We came in for drinks after having dinner at a near by restaurant. Hubby loves Guinness on tap and North House has it. We found a spot at the bar and ordered our drinks. I had a cosmo, the worse cosmo ever. After that disappointing drink I ordered-Pearis Bueller's Day Off Waypoint Wintonberry Gin, Pear Nectar, Lime Juice, Soda, Rosemary | 10. This was awful as well, tasted like a sour lemonade. Did not taste any of the gin, pear, or rosemary. Perhaps the bartender (young man) needs training. Such a delight! We reserved a room for 15 and it was perfect! The old exposed brick, big windows, wood and table setting gave a nice ambiance. Everything was cooked to perfection and scrumptious. The shrimp and buffalo wings are exceptional (even better than the top rated wings in the state). The scallops over risotto is superb. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I was so impressed with the attentive staff. Our server, Hunter, was wonderful! He was extremely nice, professional, available, anticipated our every need, made great recommendations and had patience with the young children. He and his pleasant staff (including the lovely hostess) made sure that everyone was happy, comfortable, satisfied and that the party flowed flawlessly. Nowadays this type of service and quality is hard to come by. We all had a fantastic experience. Very grateful! read more

We visited the North house for a private anniversary party luncheon. It was wonderful the place is filled with such history. The room we were in was beautiful. For my first visit, came for the valentines "holiday". It was a good choice because I immediately received date night vibes from this restaurant. Even the bar area has an intimate atmosphere vibe, regardless of the mounted tvs. It may be the result of the dim lighting with the soft string lights hanging behind the bar. Nevertheless, we chose a booth in the dining room. We ordered, winter salad, crab cakes, lamb chops, the steak & the puff pastry for dessert. Every course was beautiful & tasted like perfection, except the brussel sprouts that came with the chops. They were beyond charred & I mostly received leafs. The chef preferred a med rare cook on the lamb, but I like medium. Somehow, he/she was able get it in the middle. This chef is impressive. It was so soft & flavorful. I wanted to eat all of it, but the portion is genourous so I had to get a to go. I so tempted to ask the waiter to include the bones, so I could knaw on them later, but alas I must use my manners & show proper etiquette lol. My companion, couldn't stop raving about his salad, of all things. Not the steak, the salad! It was warranted though, that maple vinaigrette is amazing, with the combination of ingredients. I'm still trying to figure out how they cooked the squash, so I can recreate at home. The crab cakes were ok. I expected more crab due to the name. The sauce was great. I couldn't get enough. The steak is massive & well seasoned. We were expecting it to shrink & be smaller than the ounces stated, but it was not disappointing at all. The dessert, I felt like the name didn't fit. Dipped puff pastry led me to believe there were muliple pastry balls actually dipped in white chocolate. It was not. There were 3 layers of puff pastry sheets/crackers with white chocolate in the middle & dollops on top. Still delicious, just thought it was named incorrectly. The service was also great. The waiter did his periodic check-ins that weren't instusive. He answered any questions we had & didn't seem irritated. Our drinks were never lacking & I loved him, simple as that. Very pleasant & actually seemed like he enjoyed his job. He gave the same amount of enthusiasm to all his guests. I took a trip to the restroom & discovered two private party rooms. So this is a great choice for events. I'm around 40mins from this restaurant & I would not mind making several trips for those lamb chops & to give the rest of the menu a go. read more

This is a late review but it still worth writing about. Had dinner with the family for daughters special birthday celebration. The The North House is a historical restraunt that has connections to the American Revolution, the road outside was part of the continental army. Pretty special right? We ate in the blacksmiths room (highly recommend this room) Sitting next one the oldest chimneys in the country. Now...the food was amazing and the service was spot on outstanding. I started with onion soup that had cheese cheese cheese an onion flavor that was awesome. It had me ready to lick the bowl. Yummy Good. My meal was Beef Wilmington and that still lingers in my memory of deliciousnesses. Made to perfection with a sauce that took it to another level. A definite winner and I will absolutely order it again. Ps order extra sauce. If you ever visit the NT for dinner the experience will truly stay with you. Upscale pub atmosphere with a busy bar and delicious high-quality food. The appetizers were so good and huge. We loved the brussels sprouts appetizer. Unfortunately the first round had almonds (one of our dinner partners is allergic) without batting an eye we were given another portion without almonds. I'm typically not a fan but this preparation could change my mind. The sweetness and crunch married with the creamy base could change any one's mind. We also loved the for ricotta cheese with truffle honey and grilled bread. Our server was swamped but super efficient, friendly and high qualified to get the job done. We were impressed. The duck was absolutely cooked to perfection Possibly one of the best duck dishes I've ever had. My daughter had the short rib grilled cheese that was super yummy. All of this food came out quickly considering how busy the restaurant was. When something came up and several of us had to quickly pack up and leave the server jumps to help us and we boxed up the food and eat it in our hotel room. I'm glad we didn't leave it on the table because it was truly delicious. Next time I'm in Simsbury I'm going to beeline it to the north Bar. read more

I am really struggling with writing this review, I came here because it had four stars. I really wanted to like The North House. I called ahead to see if they had room for one, I was told no, but I could check out the bar. When I arrived there were plenty of empty tables and the bar also had empty tabletops, that was a bit confusing. The hostess was not very helpful at all. I found a a table and ordered a glass of overpriced wine. Very disappointing varietal, definitely not worth 20$. I had clam chowder to start with, it was a strange broth, a touch oily and not as creamy as I prefer. It needed salt, not much flavor throughout the dish. For my entree I ordered short ribs, still hopeful. The warm dinner rolls were good. That was most of my dinner. My dinner was extremely disappointing, it looked and tasted like a chuck roast, extremely over salted. I've eaten short ribs in many, many places and I've never had or seen anything like this calling itself short ribs. There was a large, thick unsavory layer of fat on the bottom, just like with a chuck roast you'd throw in the crock pot to slow cook for the day. The spaetzle was dry and overcooked small pieces. The sauce was okay. Overall, it was a disappointing dish. I received a free dessert for checking in and sad to say it really wasn't any better than my meal. Everything was bland and not as described on the menu. The server was very pleasant and attentive all evening, the atmosphere in the bar was loud, but that's to be expected in a bar area. read more

There were 6 of us and we enjoyed our visit overall, and it was the first time. It did take about 10 minutes after being seated before we were asked for drink orders, another 10 minutes or so before the drinks came out. In general the service was a bit slow, but nothing that took away from a lovely family evening and we were not in any rush. And the staff were lovely. Food was quite good - whipped ricotta app, pork belly app, short rib entree and swordfish special the highlights; steaks were bit overcooked and bland but tasty enough (it is steak!). read more

I think something is changing at the North House and I mean this in a good way. I have always enjoyed their bar area and happy hours. Lots of great drink varieties in a cozy and warm atmosphere. I didn't order food here very often as I always found it kinda meh. Went for drinks and dinner last night as I've heard a few say their food was great. I ordered a hamburger. In the past, it was pretty good but the roll/bun was very soggy. Not a big issue but notable. Last night, the roll was not soggy and was delicious. The fries were great. The newer IPA called Lunch would give Lagunitas a run for their money. My husband had the French onion soup...delicious. His meatloaf was very good. Old world charm meets new world cuisine. This restaurant is drenched in history (Home built in 1757) and offers a wide selection of unique and well prepared dishes. My favorite area to dine is a booth in the forge room (historically aka the 1832 stone blacksmith shop) on a cold day with the giant fireplace roaring. However the other areas of the restaurant also offer distinctive atmosphere and history that should not be missed. The food is inventive, prepared with farm fresh ingredients and perfect portion sizes . The Brussels Sprouts and Duck Crepes are a must to start off the culinary journey. I have had both the Beef Wellington and House Cured Duck Breast for entrees and recommend them both prepared medium rare for optimal flavor and consistency. Based on my experience both dishes have been executed perfectly on multiple occasions. They both offer palate pleasing complex deep flavors with equal visual satisfaction. Lastly the service is impeccable. The waitstaff is very knowledgeable and helpful with both suggestions and the care and attention they provide. First time at North house. First impression, beautiful, large, rustic. However, when it came to the food, it was very below par. I was here at an event, and most of the items that was served did not meet my expectations. To begin they brought out appetizers, buffet style. Nothing was labeled. I'm not sure what was what. (Goodness for bid someone had an allergy). The chicken wings were extremely over cooked and dry, the mini burger sliders, again, very dry with no condiments. The bread with the ricotta was very pleasant. As well as the bacon wrapped scallops. It was a five course meal options were very limited. First course I chose calamari. And believe me, I've had plenty of calamari in my lifetime. These calamari were all fried batter and no meat. Not impressed. Caesar salad, pretty nice. The third course; penne alla vodka, had me question. There were five of us at the table and they presented one a little bowl of pasta, enough for 1 to 2 people, for everyone to share. In terms of presentation that was unacceptable. I thought it would've been more appropriate to do one scoop of pasta per plate. Fourth course I chose the salmon. The salmon was so dry and over cooked, I was disappointed. Fifth course, I chose the crème brûlée. I took one bite of it, and I had to spit it into my napkin. It was awful. I was expecting a traditional crème brûlée, but instead, I received something that resembled purple Play-Doh with the consistency of baby food and a biscotti thrown in there. Overall, the service was well, but the food was very much below par. Will not be returning. read more

I was between 3.5 and 4 stars for the whole experience. Let me preface by saying that when I go out to a nice restaurant for a date - in order to rank 5 stars - it has to be pretty perfect all around. Let's start with the food - since that's where some of you may then stop reading: It was pretty delicious! They brought out rolls to start - they were decent but not amazing. They served them with honey butter which was a nice treat. I started with the French onion soup which was great! Really great, actually. My husband had shrimp cocktail which were equally delicious! For dinner, my husband had the cavatelli alla vodka - he loved it. I tasted it as well, and it was really tasty. I had the scallops with cheddar cheese grits and mushrooms. It was amazing, however, it was served luke warm, which was really disappointing. I probably could have said something when it first arrived, but I feel like that ruins the whole dining experience. My husbands came out piping hot, and it would have been awkward sending mine back while he ate his. I wasn't looking for that experience - get it right the first time. I did mention it to our waitress at the end of the meal just to let the back of the house know. Saw the manager pop over to a few tables to ask if they enjoyed their meals, but that didn't happen at our table. We also had cocktails which were tasty. My husband enjoyed watching the bartender - he said he was doing an awesome job mixing behind the bar. I had the Paloma and my husband had the Farm Fashioned. Both were great with a nice heavy handed pour (which we appreciated :)) Pictures on the walls were crooked and there was a tile in the ladies bathroom where there was a leak. It was brown and unappealing. A pretty easy fix to just make the overall dining experience an amazing experience. It's about a 25 min drive from our house, and I do feel like there are other restaurants we just enjoy more. My husband bought me tickets for Christmas to attend the murder mystery dinner last night 1.26.2023. I had to share that I was disappointed in everything but the actors and the show. *With 20 tables of 10 guests each, to have 1 small bar with 2 bartenders was awful, waiting 30/45 minutes for a drink. *Being told that wait staff would be around to take drink orders , ONLY the VIP table had this. Why? *Having to remind the wait staff that our table #20 did not get food when EVERYONE else did, twice in the evening, then to have cold food and soggy salad. *At $100.00 per ticket plus another $50.00 at the cash bar it was a sad disappointment. I was so looking forward to this evening out just to leave early with very poor service and bad planning by The North House. Perhaps in the future additional bars and appetizer stations can be added. Having a better process to assure all tables are waited on and fed properly. I will not be returning to this venue again and it's very sad that what should have been an amazing holiday gift was ruined for us. read more

My new favorite restaurant! We received a very generous gift card to the North House as a gift. Not in the mood to dress up, we decided to go and try the pub (I think they call it the tavern). It was so GOOD! The have a tavern menu that is very reasonably priced. You can also order off of their dining room menu if you want a big meal. We have been able to return several times with our gift card and have had amazing service and food every time. Things I have tried and loved: buffalo wings, hamburger with blue cheese and side salad, Wrench beer (by Industrial Arts). I keep ordering the same thing because it's so good! I also love that they don't over air condition in the pub. Looks like there's a wood stove fireplace - should be so warm and cozy in the winter! Definitely will be back - maybe weekly!!! read more

Went here last night for dinner. Was very good! Sat in the forge room, which has a great historic atmosphere. We started with the crab and lobster cake. Very good. Good consistency. Also fried calamari, good, not at all greasy. Main courses were duck breast with a fantastic sweet potato side (I do not like sweet potatoes but ate this up!). Friend had short rib which looked very good. Dessert was creme brûlée and carrot cake, both good. Whiskey list is fantastic! Wine list as well. Our waiter Matt was exceptional! Great personality. First, I wish to say that I have worked for over 40 years in food service as a Chef, Owner, and now Sell food to restaurants in CT, so I know a few things about this business, and I also understand that Mother's Day is "the" toughest day restaurants have all year. I would also like to state that other than a few niggles, the service at the North House was very good. Our wait person was excellent, and the food runners, other than forgetting to deliver our appetizer, were attentive and made sure we had what we needed. Kudos on a tough day! But, "Now" for the food...Understanding it was Mothers Day, the menu was tailored to fit the day, it all sounded excellent on paper, but what sounded great was not delivered. This was a Pre-Fixe menu and the first course should have been the appetizer we ordered, but instead our table got the next course. Those who got the Onion soup loved it, everything else had basically no seasoning, or just missed the mark of what was described on the Menu. Ex: the smoked paprika on the Deviled eggs was not existent. Our appetizer showed up next, out of Order, but the Shrimp Cocktail was excellent and the Sauce had the prefect balance of Horseradish and tomato. Entrees: This is really where I start seeing RED....lots of red, as in RAW beef. The wait person ask me for a temp on the prime rib, I said Mid-Rare (which for me is a bit weird, as most places don't really need temps as Ribeye's are roasted whole, and it cooks fairly evenly across the whole roast, which is generally cut to order), but Mid Rare it was not, and without getting into a giant cooking lesson on how proteins are set in the cooking process, let's just say my entree was "RAW". Should I have sent it back, probably...But I was also aware of what day it was, and that the next cut off the roast was also going to be uncooked as well. ( Yes chef, I want to buy you a better thermometer!) The beef was also supposed to be Herb crusted, didn't taste that, It was supposed to have soft cooked eggs over the top with Hollandaise, they were hard cooked and like rubber, I got three of the smallest asparagus spears I have ever seen as my veg, and it came with stone cold Home fries. Plus everything came in separate piles on the plate like the food wasn't allowed to touch. My wife got the "Creamsicle" French Toast, zero Orange, or Vanilla flavor. My Mom did enjoy her Eggs Benedict, though she did mention is just barely warm. Desserts also sounded terrific, they were just OK. The Blood Orange Creme Brulee had great color, but almost zero sugar in the custard, or orange flavor for that matter, and several burned spots where there was not enough sugar on top to caramelize, so the custard burned. Note to GM: be careful when Describing a "Flourless Chocolate Cake" is tricky these days because of the GF folks might assume this dessert is in fact gluten free, I am pretty sure the chocolate cookie crust on this one had would negate that. That cake came to the table as hard as a rock, like it had just come out of the freezer, we let it sit for 10 minutes to warn up, after that it was great. I did look for an email address to send this to, because I didn't really want to leave this review in an open forum, as I know what Mother's day can be like, so maybe include an email address on your website. I do not like saying these things about a restaurant that I have had some very good experiences at, but this one just had to be called out so you can get back to your usual higher standards before the next Holiday rolls around. Well well. Avon CAN have a great tavern/restaurant. I was beginning to lose hope. So many close calls but I hope North House is here to stay. Judging by the packed bar on a recent night, the secret is out. The beer selection is awesome and I had a lovely Two Roads Hefeweizen to go with the hot weather. Dining companion got a summer rose that she raved about. Then the dining: delicious steamers, all cooked perfectly. Slimy salty and just right. Then the chicken wings which weren't heavily breaded but we're tasty and different. For main dishes we split both the pork buns and the gnocchitini. My dining companion couldn't kick her plate fast enough about the pasta. A simple dish, it shone with peas asparagus and herbs. I enjoyed the buns; the buns themselves were really good and the pork belly was Crispy and flavorful. Good hot spice with it too though a bit of a side for a "second" would be even better. Service was friendly and helpful. The bar was very loud to start but settled down through the evening. Back dining rooms looked very cool and had decent crowds. Will come back for those. As for complaints, the beer menu is damn near illegible!!!! Make the font size bigger; your crowd isn't teens. We need to read. And I can read some pretty small things. Amazing happy hour! Excellent drink specials and tasty apps. We ordered oysters, Asian chicken wings, and fried pork wonton. They were all top notch. We love the North House! Their happy hour is a go to for our date nights and I love the ambiance of the bar. The bartenders and hosts/hostesses are always lovely and welcoming. We have had a few meals in the sit down area and the service there was spot on and the food was amazing. The bar food is great and the drinks are delicious as well. We have had a few hiccups in service in the bar area- but they are always quick to right it without being asked whether it's a free drink or giving you something extra to make up for the mistake. The bar is typically busy so I always attribute small mistakes like that to volume of service they are providing. I cannot wait until the restrictions are gone because of Covid and we can try brunch! read more

It doesn't get much better than this for a winter brunch. My parents were up visiting so my husband and I brought them to The North House. Since it's such a cozy spot, I figured it'd be the perfect fit for a cold January afternoon. I'd eaten there a couple times before but mostly in the summer, so I always opted for outdoor seating. But there's nothing like the classic New England feel of a historic former inn - the interior is so beautifully timeless. Beyond the ambiance, the food is spectacular. We started with the BLT deviled eggs which I had tried (and loved) at an event this past fall. Whipped avocado-yolk is GENIUS. As an entree, I went for the eggs benedict with fried oysters which couldn't have been a more delectable choice. (You also have the option of supplementing your benedict with crab cake, lobster, or filet but fried oysters have my heart). Other standout dishes included the duck hash, anvil burger, and banana chocolate chip waffles. We were in and out within an hour which was impressive considering how many tables our server was juggling.
