Observation bar is a cool little spot. I felt like I was transported to the 60's. It has a old timey, historical, black and white feel to it. When I had gone it was completely dead but it was just really chill to just sit and sip. I'm pretty sure it has its better nights so if you're visiting QM this would be a good spot to stop at and grab a few drinks. read more

Visited the other night and was very glad I didn't have to drive home after my visit. Drinks are pricey but very strong, making it a little easier to accept spending such high prices for a martini. To begin with I pretty much grew up around this ship, born and raised as a Long Beach native. I remember coming here as a little kid when the ship was still grey ( on some parts) with my dad and my siblings, lol. With that said, the Queen Mary represents home when I see her. Its what I have seen my whole life. I brought my boyfriends brother from out of town to visit the ship back in August, he loved it! We had such a good time, we came back tonight with a friend for drinks (which we rarely go out and drink) EVER. Our waitress was sweet, thank you Lina/Lena! She kept the drinks coming. One star off for the RUDE asshole who thought we were laughing at his grandma (who we thought was drunk the grandma, apparently she was in pain. Hope she's ok..) and tried to start some drama. We just thought she was having a good time. His friends/family stopped anything from happening, but grow the F*** up and have some self reverence you SOB! I and my friends rarely go out, because we are hermits and the last thing we needed was some "I think I am tough as***** with tattoos." to try and start some s***. We decided to go out tonight, after going to a memorial today losing a close friends mom. We really didn't need that bull****. Overall nice bar, MOST of the time it's quiet and has a nice relaxing atomosphere. The bartender and waitresses are usually sweet and welcoming. As a local, I loving hanging here with my family from out of town, or a basic date night. But we dropped a good 100+ on drinks only to leave and feel insulted after a night going good, I should have gone to management and gotten them booted, I seriously didn't want any issues. I recently went to the Queen Mary for the first time. Upon buying our ticket for entrance we received a free drink voucher with our purchase. The bar was set up nicely and I enjoyed my time. The only problem I had was how old and beat up the glass paneling was on the patio outside. I sat outside to try to enjoy the views, but could hardly see through the glass. It kind of defeats the purpose of having an outside patio in such a beautiful location if you can't see out. Overall an enjoyable experience read more

So disappointed in the overall experience and every second I have spent on this ship. Every hospitality employee I came in contact with on my 7 hours In this hotel was deadpan as if this truly is a ghost ship and they were truly unhappy to be here. Usually the bartender is at least the happy one, wrong. Juan Carlos could not be bothered to say anything let alone ask if I would like another beer. It was 3:40pm and we were 4 of 7 patrons....I have a feeling they could give a $"@& less about repeat business. Need to fire whoever is in charge of the hiring process. James on the tour... Why one star, because there was no negative available.. the room is old and not well maintained and has seen much better days, seems like the staff is at best is doing you a favor serving you. If you order food lets just say good luck, first it is way overpriced for what looks and taste like frozen food, way overpriced and I believe the chef had to defrost our food, we almost left it took so long. Another couple told us that they waited almost fifty minutes for one appetizer, they said they were close to mutiny. I have been going to the Queen Mary Observation Bar for quite some time on the weekends that James King is the entertainer. ENTERTAINER is really what he is. I bring at least four people with me and we keep our thirst quenched and enjoy all of the staff. To my dismay, I understand that James King is only scheduled one Friday in the month of September. Guess the few hundred dollars that we spend a week is not going to be missed at the bar. Does anyone in charge of the entertainment ever observe the connection that James has with the people who frequent the Queen? He is not an Elvis impersonator, he is just one great performer that sings his heart out. We all love James, Evan, all of the waitresses and the other bartenders. The ambiance is second to none and the access to the ship adds a level of romance if you're there with a date. One part museum/one part nostalgic history lesson, the ship itself makes the trip worth it. Regarding the house cocktails, they are completely sub-par. By far the worst $12 cocktail I've ever had and when the jazz band is playing forget about having a conversation. I've lived in Long Beach almost my entire life and none of the zillion owners of the ship over the years seem to be able to get this place right. I really like this bar because it's part of the Queen Mary and since I am in love with the Queen Mary I like it allot. But I just had a comment: 1) The beer on tap Saturday and Sunday (Obsidian and Newcastle) was very flat and tasteless. They should order smaller kegs or change the larger kegs when they get too low or old. Yes you will lose a little money but you will retain regular patrons. Rip off!!!! If you are not a guest at the hotel, you are required to pay for a $15 "voucher" before entering. Apparently, this is a new policy within the last 6mths....bad idea! 4 guys behind us left when they found out about the charge. We paid the $15 because we were told it would be credited to our tab. HOWEVER, this is a RIP OFF if you just wanted to buy 2 or 3 drinks from the bar. I ordered an orange press. No garnish on an $11 small, weak drink?! The least you can do is add a wedge of orange or lemon. Anyhow, I gave the bartender my $15 "voucher" and she said they don't give change. I misunderstood because I thought she meant they don't "cash out" and assumed the remaining balance would stay on the voucher. What she really meant was I don't get anything back. At my girlfriend's last birthday I brought a bunch of our friends to have a chill time on the Queen Mary. Honestly the service and drinks were wonderful. I had quite a bit to drink for the occasion, picked up the tab, put some cash down and asked the rest to be on my card. So they brought me the receipt to sign, I wrote a tip based on the amount charged, our friends parted ways and we went home. Next day I look at my statement and the server had taken the $70 cash as her tip, charged the full bill to my card, and I had written a tip based on THAT amount, so she essentially got a double tip. Now I can see where she may have thought I'm just super generous, but I called up the management for Observation Bar several times trying to straighten this out. Left several messages and they were never returned. Not a single message or reply, and I feel completely taken advantage of. Watch yourself at this place, they will take advantage of their tipsy patrons! read more

If I could give a zero would. The evening started off fine. The drinks here are good, but a tad overpriced. Once it got busy we never saw our waitress which is understandable but it took us forever to get our bill. I wanted to walk around the ship, but when we returned to go back to our 3 tables we were refused entry. Even though we had just dropped a lot of money in there, we had tables, and NOBODY told us that we would have to wait in a line to get back in. BUT she was telling other people as they left....but the previous "door" man didn't utter a word to us. Don't waste your time on this place. It was my first time at the Queen Mary to celebrate a family members birthday and experience uncomfortable racial profiling. We I arrived in the lobby with my date, an employee in the lobby asked "where we were going" and then proceeded to say " you look like a respectable couple I guess you can go up". Then we had a group of 4 couples come and security proceeded to stop the couples at the queen Mary entrance and said they were at capacity. When I asked the bar employees they said they had no clue why they are stopping them. it was no where near capacity half the party had already left, no one was keeping track of entrance, no one was walking the floor so to say that is very obvious it was because we were a minority. Then security came up asked to speak to restaurant employees outside and they gave the clearance for my the group to join the party. This was completely unprofessional and hope this is not the way Queen Mary handles is minority customers. read more

Wow. Went to a wedding this past weekend at the Queen Mary and during the off times at the wedding we met all of our friends at the observation bar. All was good, all was fun. After the wedding, at about 1130, we met up with the late-night partiers after the wedding at this same bar. It's me and my fiancé and our two friends sitting at one table. Our friend goes up to the bar, mind you he is completely sane and not absurdly drunk, and the bartender goes, "I'm not serving you." Tyler is like what? Why? Huh? And the bartender just continues with "I'm not serving you." What the hell? Then my fiancé goes up there and asks what is going on and the bartender says I'm not serving you two but I'll serve the two girls at your table. EXCUSE ME??! My fiancé continues by explaining to him how we are not drunken idiots. We are simply enjoying ourselves with friends after a wedding. Meanwhile, there's a woman to our left wearing almost nothing, holding a beer in her hand and dancing on the freaking pillar. My fiancé looks over at her and says "you're still going to serve her!? But not us!?" The bartender goes, "yeah." Oh man. We were all pretty livid at this point. So my fiancé continues talking to him and then he finally decides to serve ALL of us drinks. After a while, the bride's mom asks us all what we want to drink because she is going to buy us a round. I go up to the bar with her and the bartender whispers to the waitress, then the waitress comes up to me and bride's mom and says "I'm sorry the bartender said not to serve you." OMG!!!! I thought I was going to explode. At that point we all just left. It was absolutely awful and I've never been harassed like that in my life. Yuck. Won't ever go back there. read more

A group of Girlfriends and I ended up at this place by accident one night on our way to see Vamp and the Queen Mary. We were walking by looking for the lounge and we saw this old fashioned 20's era looking bar. We quickly passed it by as we were late for the show but it turns out we were too late for the show so we hit the bar instead. Anyways the bar served excellent drinks, one of the best Mojitos I've had in long beach. I do have to say, my friends and I were quite out of place as we were the youngest people in the bar by ten years. I think this place is for a more adult crowed, not for young 24 year olds. I do have to say that the atmosphere was very laid back and the music was entertaining. I have since been one additional time as a pit stop to the show and had the same thoughts. If only the Queen Mary would put some money into the place and Jazz it up a bit, it has so much potential. read more

Okay. I'm forever in search of great happy hours and decided to give this place a try. Love the view, but expected to eat on plates... go figure! Everything including the cheese sampler was served in a plastic fish fry type holder with tissue. I can understand this type of container if it's a Long John Silver, but not the Observation deck of the Queen Mary. Don't know if the dishwasher was down that day, but I expected a little more given the elegant surroundings. We did get real utensils which was a plus. Like the other reviewer said... food was kind of on the greasy side... maybe that's why no plates? Maybe they'd figure it would slide off? Come on, it's not like we are REALLY at sea. So much potential and so disappointing. Sorry to say, I won't be going back again. read more

Nice bar. Great Long Islands, mixed by hand, which is a big deal to me. Long Island is one of my favorite drinks, and when mixed correctly it's great, mixed incorrectly, nasty crap. So good drinks, nice art deco interior, beautiful views and when we were there on Sunday they had live music. We had our little one with us, and the singer actually did a Miley Cirus song just for her, very nice. We had a great time and would go back again. read more

I never write reviews, but I was compelled to write one for this trip. It is a shame that a trip to a historical landmark had to be ruined by how the Observation Bar was run. First you have to pre-purchase beverage tickets for drinks that are WAY overpriced. There was non-existant weight staff and the bar staff was rude! They did not have appetizers available at all even though they have menus for them. I can not recommend this bar to anyone! read more

The décor, the ambiance, the general milieu of this bar is blissful. However, the drinks were a little less than stellar. I ordered a rum old-fashioned and my friend ordered a sidecar. He said his cocktail was very tasty, but we both noticed how the glass seemed rather, well, half full. My rum old-fashioned was sad. Water was the primary flavor with the rum hiding behind it. Couldn't really find the bitters and orange...C'est la vie. We wanted to switch to beer, they were out of the one we wanted, that's no big deal, it happens. The waitress offered her recommendation and it was a very good beer. The service is very nice and friendly, absolutely no complaints there. We had spinach artichoke dip. It was good, nothing really super unique about it but I wasn't expecting anything super unique to begin with, it's just a rather tasty dip. All in all I recommend. It is a place that deserves a visit, it is a bar wrapped in nostalgia and immense history. read more

This place is HORRIBLE. Do not take a step in here. We waited 20 minutes for a waitress to even come up to our table, then she left mid order and said she'd be right back. She came back 10 minutes later to finish taking our order. She never came with our drinks, so we had to walk up to the bar to get a drink. Then when she came back to the table she said she would go try and help the cooks make our food, which is odd because she's a waitress not a cook. We tried to close our tab for our drinks and the bartender wanted to charge us regular price when we ordered them during happy hour. He tried to fight us and said we got there 5 minutes ago, when we had been there almost an hour and he cussed at us while being rude and talking back. After that we walked out and will never be back. This is absurd, especially for a place like the Queen Mary that spends so much on advertising. Do NOT waste your time here. read more

This bar IS Art Deco (and the ship at that) it is dec'd out in deco. And, very spacious. The bar counter doesn't have a convenient lift up door so the bartenders (who are dressed in bow ties and white color if I recall) have to hop over the top of the bar, a thing reminiscent of our grandparents bar days that I had no clue of. But, think its fun. A decent cocktail served. Cheesy Elvis guy on the weekend, that is so cheesy it somehow becomes cool. Elvis guy is Middle Eastern, it's a trip. The view from the boat is great. Us folks living downtown always look OUT to the ocean, its kind of cool to look in our our great city for a change. You go to the bar - but you have full roam of the boat without paying. A fun thing to do after a few cocktails, and a dance w/ Elvis. Could be romantic, could be scary, whatever you make of it. It's haunted?, I don't know about all that....Just a cool bar for a change of pace. read more

Tonight was my second and unfortunately last time visiting the Observation Bar. I came with a group of eight and we had three tables close together. The evening began just fine - ordered drinks at the bar and then a waitress also took some additional drink orders at the table. The band provided great music, etc. However, later in the evening, a few of us decided to go walk around the ship, while three of our friends stayed at our tables along with our personal belongings. When we returned about 15 minutes later, the person at the door informed us that the restaurant was at capacity and we would have to wait in a very long line to regain entry. When we earlier walked out of the bar, NO ONE made mention that if we left, we would have to go into the queue line. It comes down to simple communication - since they have someone posted at the door monitoring the number of people inside, it would be nice to know that by walking out, we risk losing our "spot" in the bar, even though, obviously, no one in the queue line would be sitting at our tables. Unfortunately, these days, communication is a lost skill and leads to situations like we experienced this evening. If anyone associated with the Observation Bar actually takes the time to read these reviews, I would suggest implementing a more effective policy for handling situations of this type, i.e. better communication to your patrons when we are spending money in your establishment (and had planned on spending more). The net result was that one of us was allowed back in long enough to gather our belongings and bid the rest of our party good night. Definitely will NOT be returning. read more
