I ordered the elk burger which comes with apple butter, Gruyère cheese and caramelized onions as well as thick-yet-crispy steak fries and a smoked tomato aioli. My cousin ordered the same, but with maple aioli--and wow! I'm definitely going to have to try to make maple aioli at home. I appreciated the creativity yet approachability of the dishes. Rusted Root is the perfect type of spot to go when you want a good burger or sandwich that's more inventive than the average casual spot. Since I went in the wintertime, I wasn't able to check out the rooftop. I spotted on the cocktail menu that they make a vodka cran with lavender I've never seen that combo!

The restaurant is comfortable with spacious booths and tables spread nicely through several dining areas. The service has always been solid and the food has been tasty and reasonably priced. Today, I had breakfast with a friend. We were seated promptly and received our coffees (and a carafe) shortly after. The menu isn't as huge as some breakfast places but offers something for everyone. You can also get lunch starting at 10 AM. I've had their breakfast buffet (check for hours), their cinnamon rolls and several breakfast items. They have always been appropriately prepared. Today, I had their eggs Benedict. The hashbrowns accompanying the meal were fantastic. The flavor was good; however, my eggs were harder than requested. My friend had the kielbasa/sausage, which looked good too. Our server was attentive and helpful. If you are in the area, this is a tried and true restaurant!

When we came in there was 1 other person in the whole place, by the time we were signing the bill there was 20 people in here and she was the only person working. WILD. I felt awful for her, shame on management for having only a singular BARTENDER staffing the entire restaurant by herself on a Friday night. As not only the bartender, but the waitress, food runner, and busser. Seriously ridiculous. She did manage to provide good service despite how slammed she was, give that girl a raise. Food: Everything we ordered we were happy with (we ordered two apps and two entrees)! The standouts were the burger and the confit chicken salad. I really want to come back and try more items on the menu. If this review as just based on the food I'd give it 5 stars. Due to the lack of management oversight of employees on staff and the bathroom situation it is 3 since there is room for improvement.

The other dish that impressed us was the Door County Cherry Walnut Salad--a good balance of sweet, salty, and bitter and a good counter to all the fried things we were eating! The restaurant is a hotel restaurant, so don't expect anything remarkable for atmosphere, but all in all, The Forge is a solid place to eat.

One of the highlights of the evening was watching the kitchen in action. I'm six feet tall and still had to hoist myself up into mine. My wife, who is five feet tall, practically had to climb aboard. The view is fantastic, but after an hour and a half, a couple of drinks, and a great meal, it's easy to forget just how far off the ground you are. As I got up to leave, I nearly lost my footing and almost tumbled out of my chair. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't as lucky. She fell backward, hitting her head on the concrete floor and bruising her leg and forearm as she tried to break her fall. Thankfully, she was okay and didn't need medical attention, but she ended up with a sizable bump on her head and some impressive bruises. So, a word of caution: if you're seated at the high-top bar, be aware of the height. The food, service, and atmosphere were excellent, but those chairs are not for the faint of heart. Consider bringing a parachute. Would definitely return, though perhaps next time we'll request a table closer to ground level.
