For years now, my boyfriend has been on an endless quest to discover a local restaurant with east coast dry-cure pastrami and corned beef. Neither of us had been to the Mohawk, and after a couple of friends recommended their reubens, we decided to give it a go. We were seated at a two-person table right next to the windows, which was nice because it was a bit lighter there and I could people watch outside, but the tables were so close to each other that I felt like no one had any privacy. The people to my right were talking about local libraries, and the gentlemen to my left were talking sports stats. I shouldn't know these things, because I shouldn't have been able to hear their conversations. In these situations, I never want to talk about anything with my dining partner(s), because if I am accidentally eavesdropping on everyone else, then I can only assume they're doing the same with me. I had a reuben with potato pancakes, and his dudeliness had a reuben with fries. They were pretty good, but no better than I've made at home, and a tad on the small side. The corned beef was alright, but it was your standard thin-sliced store-bought fare. The potato pancakes were thin and crispy which is how I like them, but I only got like 5 of 'em, and they were gone very fast which made me sad. So I feel very okay about this place. I would certainly go again if someone suggested it, but at $22.95 for two small sandwiches that were just alright and measly amounts of side dishes, I don't think I'll be making any regular stops there. read more

Good Food great atmosphere however watch your items went to the restroom for 5 minutes or less someone stole my car keys while wife was sitting at the bar. Had to have car towed home to prevent from being stolen. Mistressly the next day my keys were found . I love this restaurant. I used to visit this place back in the 90's and it's only gotten better. The food & service are fantastic. The menu is predictable, but my family of 4 was very happy with everything. Our server was an efficient & friendly pro. My burger was cooked perfectly and everything seemed very fresh. This was my first time here and I've lived in Columbus all my life!! Boy, I didn't realize what I was missing out on!! I had the chicken quesadilla, hubby had the homemade meatloaf, kid 1 had crust less pizza with mushrooms and kid 2 had Mac and cheese. I tried all of these and they were all simply amazing!! I had the ghost burger, which if the veggie patty wasn't a pile of mush, I would have given a 5 star review. Another reviewer mentioned the mushy burger and I should have listened and got something else. But I was intrigued buy the ghost pepper cheese. The flavors were great, but that patty was texturally awful. What pulled the entire experience up was the rum cake. It was phenomenal. I wouldn't normally order rum cake anywhere, but at the encouragement of our server we did, my husband and I split it but I wish I had gotten my own piece. It was AMAZING! The corn nuggets were also good. Overall the service was decent. It was really busy so our server was a bit slow to get back to the table, but otherwise he was very attentive and friendly. read more

I went to The Old Mohawk the other day and I am deff a fan. The ambiance is nice, its got a nice rustic pub feel to it. The wait staff was great and the food was amazing. I went with my family and we all felt right at home here. To start off the night, we got a small order of fried mac n cheese balls. I tell you what the mac n cheese was perfectly cooked in the middle and the breading was not too greasy and was a perfect chrisp breading. I tell you what when I smashed on most of the cheese balls, I knew it was going to be a great meal. My father and I both ordered the guacamole bacon burger, while my mother got the Mohawk sandwich and my brother got the bbq bacon burger. My dad ordered his burger medium rare and mine medium. The cook back there knows his stuff and cooked both of our burgers 100% perfect. The burgers were not as sloppy as I thought they would be which was great. The burger had a great combination of guac bacon and burger one of the ingredients did not overpower the other it was fantastic. My mother got the Mohawk which is chicken salad with roast beef cheese on a mixed rye bread. The chicken salad was cold which was interesting when having it with roast beef but it was a great comination of the both. Their draft beer selection was great having more than 6 different types of beer. Their bottle selection was alright as well not the best but still alright. All in all I would come here again in a blink of an eye to have those mac n cheese balls. read more

I visited Mohawk for the first time today with my boyfriend. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. Beer selection seemed ok as long as you aren't looking for a big variety of craft beers. The food was fantastic and I thought the prices were reasonable for what we got. I will say that the food took a very long time to get to us; I was done with my root beer (I'm a slow drinker even when it's not alcohol) by the time they gave us our appetizer, so this is not somewhere to go if you're on a time schedule. Overall I definitely recommend giving Mohawk a try, I know I wasn't disappointed and I will definitely be visiting again. read more

I like the atmosphere--lively, interesting space, cozy without being too cramped, interesting mix of people. I like the service--even when busy it's attentive and the food came at a good pace. I like the beer selection and the variety. If I were voting only on the above, I'd give it 4 stars. However, I do not like the food. Last time the fish and chips were dry and crunchy (not in a good way), which was more than a little disappointing, considering the $12.99 price. The "tartar sauce" was basically mayonnaise with an odd pickle or two floating in it. The coleslaw was dressed in some kind of tangy-sweet poppy seed dressing. I had heard that the food was amazing. Nostalgia doesn't create amazing food. I would call it ok not amazing. It seems people have a hard time coming to grips with the fact that a great restaurant isn't great anymore. My BF and myself ordered fried mac & cheese balls to start. They were ok, kinda bland. I had the fish sandwich and fries. The fish was cooked well and the five fries I was given were good. The tartar sauce was disgusting. I have no idea if it was home made, but it was just gross. This pretty much ruined the sandwich for me. I ended up eating the fish by its self. My BF had the chili burger. It was tasty. It was served with delicious salsa and stale bland store bought tortilla chips. It seems they skimp on parts of each meal. Above all it was over priced for what you got. This fact makes me not want to try anything else. We spent over 35 dollars on our meal. It just wasn't worth it. There are many other places very close by that are so much better and less expensive. If you want an amazing sandwich go to the Brown Bag. We came in after typical lunch time, but the service was slow. I would hate to see the wait time during the lunch and dinner rush. I've been here a couple of times so far. The first time, I was fortunate enough to go when Columbus was preoccupied elsewhere on a Saturday afternoon. The most recent visit was a much more packed Friday night right before dinner rush hit (and did it hit...there was a wait for a table by the time we left). In both cases, the food and service were great. First, there's the Old Mohawk itself. Nice brick structure, much like the rest of German Village. The interior is nice; rather interesting artwork in an otherwise rectangular dining room that is dominated at one end by the bar. I wouldn't call the place "roomy," particularly during a dinner rush, so if I were going to get dinner, I'd definitely make plans to arrive as early as possible. Ideal seating: as far as I'm concerned, the closer you can get to the front windows, the better. The tables by the window feel like sitting in a rather large booth, with a nice view of the street outside. Now, on to the food. The first time around, I had a fairly-typical yet tasty reuben. The second time around, I tried the Mother Mohawk, and let me tell you, I'll be having that again! Delicious with an interesting variety of textures and overall great taste (hence the "delicious" adjective). Then again, I look forward to sampling other items on the menu, so I don't know how soon I'll be visiting the Mother again, but it can't be soon enough. Overall, I liked the vibe, the food...pretty much everything. Good food in a good atmosphere surrounded by good people? There's not much more you could ask for. read more

The Old Mohawk has two great things going for it--cozy environment and great food. I've decided that when eating out at a restaurant, ordering their specialty is a very smart move. We ordered an appetizer of kettle chips topped with gorgonzola and bacon. Holy yum! The house-made kettle chips were crunchy and hot, but not too greasy. The strong flavor of the gorgonzola paired well with the bacon. (How can you go wrong with bacon, anyway?) We opted to share the Mother Mohawk sandwich and bratwurst sandwich. Neither disappointed! I'm still not entirely sure which one I prefer. The bratwurst was piping hot with sauerkraut and a zesty yet creamy caraway dipping sauce. The potato pancakes accompanying the sandwich were tasty but not greasy, and had a great crunch to them. The Mother Mohawk...oh my. Perhaps I did prefer this one. Marble rye. Grilled, tender roast beef. A surprisingly good chicken salad. Swiss cheese. Heated up and melted. This sounded like an odd sandwich when I first heard about it, but in terms of taste it is up there as one of the best hot sandwiches I've had. The service was consistent--and good--throughout the meal, and the draft selection is solid. We came here just for drinks. The place has a nice ambiance with exposed brick and old chandeliers. Our server Gerri is the reason for this review! She was attentive and engaging. She brought us our drinks quickly and made sure we had our refills when we were ready. She was willing to help us decide which beers to order. She also gave us a small sample of turtle soup (not mock turtle!!) to sample as she shared some of the history of the restaurant. Now I'm not one to do bad reviews on restaurants, but this was a little ridiculous. I ordered a half sandwich and soup, about $10, the sandwich being grilled cheese and soup being tomato. Grilled cheese is about the easiest thing to make. My food came out and the cheese on the sandwich was cold and barely melted and the soup, while the flavor was alright, was also lukewarm. I'd feel fine paying $10 for a half grilled cheese and soup that was actually cooked all the way, but for this? I felt like I was throwing my money in the trash can. read more

We're on a search for the Blue Danube of South Columbus, and this might be the closest we've found so far. Not open quite late enough for our ridiculously late schedules, a little too clean, but almost! Our server was friendly and did the server thing sufficiently. The menu has a half-dozen or so vegetarian dishes, and probably a couple more that could be altered to be so. I got their black bean burger, which had great flavor but was a little mushy texture-wise. Fries were the frozen kind but fine. I really want to try their tomato basil soup and their nachos. I wish they had a drink menu on the tables- I didn't think to check out the bar before we sat down, and a draft list is always nice. Well, I did wait tables - and after years of people yelling at me, throwing food at me, and leaving 10% tips, I left. I was looking for a new place for lunch and stumbled upon this great place (yes, I Yelped to find it!). The Menu has a lot of homemade specials with a broad selection. As a Vegetarian I was pleasantly surprised to find ordering easy with "V" symbols calling attention to all my friendly options. The atmosphere promotes a unique dining experience where you can feel welcome to relax and enjoy yourself. The staff was friendly and very helpful! Although I didn't have a drink the bar looked like a place where you can meet with friends for some fun, or meet new people; very inviting. This is in the heart of German Village and the style fit into this old city neighborhood. A gem in my opinion. We found this restaurant on the recommendation of the friend we were with. Very comfortable interior and friendly staff. We ordered the sweet potato tots and the breaded sweet corn nuggets to start. The tots came with a sriracha ranch sauce that actually paired well with the corn nuggets. The nuggets were the perfect combo of sweet and savory. I ordered the black bean burger and was underwhelmed. I was excited it was homemade, but the bun was way too much for the burger. I had to try it without the bun to taste it. I would stop back and get those corn nuggets and tots again and then try something else on the menu! read more

I'm pretty up and down about this restaurant. It's really more 3.5 stars, but I can't justify rounding up to 4. I walked in and there a sign saying to wait to be seated. I waited several minutes, long enough for the other diners to start staring at me because it got awkward. Finally I gave up and went to the bar to ask if I could just seat myself. He grabbed a waitress and had her seat me. Just an idea: have some sort of hostess stand rather than having your customers standing awkwardly near dining patrons. Also, have your employees periodically glance over to that area. Once seated, my server (Anna) quickly took my order. She was friendly and efficient, no complaints there. I got the Mac and cheese bites and they were delicious. Also got the veggie burger and fries. The burger was okay, not bad just not anything to remember. All right Mohawk! You do indeed have a good brat sandwich (which some say is even better than Schmidt's). It was recommended by our server who was very nice and personable. The best thing here, though, was the atmosphere. Like I said, our server was very personable and easily recognized the folks I was with as they have been there before. Everything about Mohawk was very laidback and seemingly very family-oriented - at least on the Thursday evening we went. A perfectly alright experience, more or less. The place was definitely cozy, as everyone says like a mantra. Dark wood'll do that to ya, and let's not discount that state of mind German Village can lull you into... Jesus! What am I getting myself into here?! Back to facts. I had the "Bratwurst Sandwich" which was basically exactly as advertised, which amounted to a decent thing overall. For being noted on the menu as being a specialty of the house it wasn't very exciting or noteworthy- which is not to say it wasn't without flavor or merit. The horseradish-and-whatever sauce it came with helped after liberal slatherings. The main reason I ordered the sandwich, though, was that it was the only one to come with potato pancakes by default (i.e. without a surcharge) instead of chips. Nothing annoys me like chips with a sandwich at a restaurant- it's the cop-out of potato sides. You're not fooling anyone! At any rate, the potato pancakes were, again, nothing noteworthy but far from awful. There were surprisingly few of the little fuckers, though, and while they had the requisite sour cream they really were hurting for some applesauce to flavor it all up a bit. Supposedly there's a beer selection but I didn't even look- it was all water for me. Uh, the water was fine. read more

Definitely a good place for a quick, casual bite to eat. The atmosphere is okay, but it's usually crowded on the weekends, so go early. Like many, I'm sure, we came here after trying to go to Schmidts, but not willing to wait 90 minutes. Decent amount of beers on tap and I had the spinach salad with warm bacon dressing (YUM) and the french onion soup (fairly standard yum). On the reco of my sister who lives in the area, we also split an order of the mac and cheese. Ugh, yuck! She said it was usually better than what we got, but what I tasted was flavorless, oily penne pasta that didn't come close to satisfying my mac and cheese craving. Blech! My boyfriend did order that crazy sandwich with chicken salad and roast beef or whatever and that was pretty good. I'd go again, though it's nothing to write home about. I have been here a few times and have enjoyed it every time. I have tried many things, their kettle chips, pizza pasta, and turtle soup. Everything had great taste. My fiancé has had other items on the menu as well that he has enjoyed. Each time that we have visited it has always been a full house, so I did sometimes feel that they were under-staffed because there were some delays in service, but nothing dramatic enough for us to get very upset nor come back. All around everyone is very nice and friendly. It definitely has a German Village feel and that's what we enjoy a lot about Old Mohawk. We enjoy the cozy atmosphere and it is close to where we live, so we will definitely return in the future. read more
