Stopped by The Salty Dog while we were in Sarasota on a pretty rainy day. The weather definitely exposed a few issues with the building, with some water coming in through the walls and onto the floor. Not ideal, but honestly it didn't kill the vibe at all. We still had a really good time. We tried the iconic Salty Dog and it was great. I had the coconut shrimp, my wife had a burger, and both were solid. Drinks were good too, and bonus points because they actually knew what a Black and Tan was, which you don't always get anymore. Service was good and the place has that laid-back local bar feel that just fits Sarasota. Even with the rain coming down and the water issues, everyone seemed to just roll with it and the atmosphere stayed fun. Honestly, I'm sure on a sunny day this is an even better spot to hang out, have a few drinks, and grab some food. We enjoyed ourselves and I'd definitely come back. Easy 4 stars. read more

The OLD SALTY DOG in Venice had the opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of our Charlotte County Girlfriends' for lunch, Wednesday, August 26, 2026. We were 30+ girls accommodated with inside tables and booths. Our girls who are dog owners lovers the decor, it's all about dogs! Big, little, medium. And tiny. Pictures, paintings of any type of dogs one could imagine. Old Salty Dogs is on the water so there are boats in the water and moored to every side of this fun eatery. Vanessa was our server and she was super fantastic, was on point with drinks, appetizers and our entrees. We welcomed two newcomers; Carol Heath and Debbie Simpson Williams. Such a treat to welcome them both and our ladies made sure they felt engaged in the conversations and like they had been with us always. The drink of house margaritas, varieties of wines & beers, adult drink and soft drinks are plentiful. Food was great our gal's had some many of their different appetizers and entrees. FOOT long thick hot dogs, with any and every hoping one could requests. Salads from garden, Caesar, with protein such as chicken or shrimp, steak, etc, Huge burgers, shrimp dishes, Grouper Ruben sandwich that was served on delicious Marble Rye Bread with your choice of sides and so many great other delicious meals of fish & chips, fried or broiled seafood, all that a person would desire. Went with our teenage boys for a few drinks. Host/check-in was nice. Older male bartender, seemed bothered that only my wife and I were having a drink, and kids ordered some NA drinks. I ised to bartender for years, so I get it, some kids can be a pain in the ass. Ours weren't, and we just wanted a drink in the patio. Drinks were VERY weak/seemed to have no alcohol, and I didn't like feeling like we were an inconvenience. While we were in town for 8 days, and were literally a 2 minute walk from this place, it was a quick "one and done" for us. read more

Sarasota staple of a restaurant. Whether it's this location or the Mote Marine location. Can't beat their deep fried Geier's hot dogs and massive heavy-handed drinks. We went on the weekend and there was no wait time. Snagged a table at the shaded outside patio and sat comfortable with 4 people and a baby at the wooden picnic tables. Our server was great and the food didn't take long to come out. What we ordered: wonton taco bites with blackened chicken. Famous salty dog. Loaded salty dog. Salad. Clam chowder. And I believe the coco loco. Everything was delicious. I would 100% recommend the wonton taco bites as an appetizer. It was even fun watching their resident egret hop around the patio. read more

Vanessa was our waiterres and knew exactly what I trying to order...the Hamburger with the Pineapple is called The Maui Wow-Wee burger and it's pretty darn good! Terri ordered the Blackened Chicken and surprisingly thought it wasn't spicy enough! We both thought it'd been delicious with a slice of pineapple on it as well. It wasn't a bad sandwich by any means but just missed for her. We also ordered up some of the Dog Bites as I really wanted to try some variation of their famous hot dog...very good served up with some sort of a mayo/mustard dipping sauce. We came here with a large party after failing to get tables at a couple of nearby restaurants. I'm glad we were able to be seated right away. The food itself was unmemorable, and the blackened grouper was bland and not very flavorful. The highlight was the key lime piña colada, which might be the best I can remember. Ok, had the dogs. It was a hot day 100+ with the humidity. The service was superb! Very high energy waitress with all smiles. It was not crowded because we hit it 2pm and sat on the patio. Very DOG friendly. They love the dogs that come in and are willing to touch and love on them. My boys loved it. We tried the Key Lime coladas, oh.. big glasses. Lobster roll was not what I expected normally it's not mixed in a sauce , I'm used to a little mayo, and lobster but it was a rich delight. The fries were overdone, but no biggie we were hungry. My son had the fish dish and he devoured it. Not sure what kind of fish it was, might have been grouper and he loved it so much . My other son had the burger and ate every bit. Hubby had the shrimp basket which was lightly breaded, like a tempura so he loved it. Would for surely be back. read more

We were there on a Saturday night and it wasn't very busy and so we got seated right away. The staff was friendly and our food arrived quickly, a little to quick as it came before our salads. The cucumber in my salad looked like it had been frozen, which isn't good. I had the admirals plate or something like that. Walked down to Old Salty Dog with our dog to site on the patio and enjoy some grub. The Salty Dog is located just down slightly from the mayhem of the Siesta Key Village area. We had a great meal and solid service. Our dog was spoiled by the waitstaff, and we enjoyed what I will call the best onion rings we had on our whole trip! The order was huge and yes, fresh, hand cut, and battered onion rings came to our table! We ended up here for dinner around 6:45 after driving down the main drag and finding all of the restaurants jam packed Z this location is towards the end of the line of restaurants but gosh, I'm glad we ended up here! This is a unique restaurant/bar serving seafood and other sandwiches, salads and entrees. We had an incredible experience. The food. The service. The vibe. All top notch! The 3 adults all had the lobster roll special. Good lord it was good! Served on a butte try, perfectly toasted Texas toast and stuffed full of the yummiest lobster meat. My only feedback would be to serve it with a lemon wedge on the side. The kiddos spilt a Mac n cheese meal with watermelon. Super creamy and homemade tasting. No cheap Kraft Mac around d here. We order some dessert to go (to eat on the beach at sunset). Get the key lime pie! It had the most perfect crumbly graham cracker crust and a custard style key lime. We'll probably end up picking up more tomorrow, it was that good. *if you're thinking about the ice cream. Skip it. Our waiter miles was great! Friendly, attentive, timely. Lastly, I LOVE that they had pictures and stories of the dogs available for adoption at the local humane society. One of my favorite dinners in Siesta Key. The staff were great and pointed us in the right direction for our food and drink orders. For my meal I had the grouper rueben. It was one of the most unique flavor combinations I've ever had. The rye bread was perfect and held everything together. Amazing sandwich and a great experience overall. read more

The Old Salty Dog was one of two restaurants that we visited twice on our visit the Siesta Key. The first time I got the Surf and Turk entree. The shrimp was excellent, but the steak was overcooked and a little under seasoned. I wouldn't get it again. However, the crab legs were juicy, easy to crack open, and very filling. The price for the crab legs were the best I saw on the island, and worth every penny! Just be aware... they are definitely messy! Our service was fast and great, despite being busy. The restaurant as a whole is quitter than a lot of the other restaurants on the island, but it is a nice change of pace if you'd like a more relaxing atmosphere. read more

Lucky us I like that you can park right in front of the restaurant, that is if you can score a parking space. We did, someone was backing out. Our good fortune continued with very good food and excellent service. For this visit I did get their Famous Salty Dog, a large deep fried hot dog. I opted for cheddar cheese, there are many types of toppings available. I once did their Man vs Food Challenge, which had lots of toppings. I finished it and decided once was enough for that much food. But I digress, for this visit my big dog was very good, and I finished it off. I also got raw onions, which came in a small cup instead of on my dog. Good fries, too. Our server was sweet and attentive, checking back with us often. Took a drive to siesta key to see the most "beautiful beach in the USA" and this little restaurant was a highlight for me and the kids. Great service and great food. It's no wonder that this place has been here for 39 years. The booze is plentiful, the tourists are seasonal, and the dogs are welcome. And the Shrimp Po'Boy is good! Nice French roll, toasted, with fresh chopped Romaine lettuce and tomatoes. Fried shrimp with fairly bland (Britishish) beer batter. Chipotle mayo on the side. No spice until I added some Chulula. But nice salad crunch and juicy shrimp! Cole slaw: crunchy and refreshing, no mayo, with pineapple. Good fries! I also ordered a tequila gimlet with some added pineapple. I'll preface this review by saying this was my first visit here, but boy was it a good one. Fish soup was on point, great flavor and a nice spicy kick to it. The crab dip was safe if unspectacular but damn were the fish and chips outstanding!! Now as a northern Englishman fish and chips are our staple and nowhere does it better than we do, so when our waitress Blythe said they were good I have to admit I was a bit skeptical. First thing that struck me is the lack of beer batter (stop using this on fish and chips America, it's terrible), this whale sized piece of haddock was lightly coated in a thin crispy batter that was to die for, all while keeping the haddock inside nice and flaky. From first to last bit I was in fish and chip heaven!!! So I've travelled fairly extensively around the country and had some good and some bloody awful fish and chips and this may well be the best I have had this side of the Atlantic!! read more
