Pretty good thin crust pizza. It's not razor thin but hearty enough to hold up to the toppings. Bit pricey by the slice but the taste is actually pretty good. I like the tang of the tomato sauce here. Just got a basically pepperoni slice and it provides all the flavor you need - just enough grease, easy to fold, spotty browned cheese. Doesn't get much better than that for a simple snack or quick lunch. read more

Oh Onion, what happened to you? It's been a tough year, hasn't it? You had to switch locations, you lost your popular spot. Your new location is marred with construction and obstacles, and your pizza - - oh man - - your pizza quality has gone downhill. I once considered the Onion to be the top pizza place in the 2-star-late-night-pizza world, they were a respectable 3+ stars. They were always better than the rest, a bit fresher, slightly higher quality, and it was well worth the walk over to the Warehouse District (from 6th street) because all the other options were horrid. So one night I made a religious effort to find your new location. Yes, it was a pain to find, parking was impossible, but I thought your pizza would have made up for the inconvenience. I couldn't have been more wrong. I checked out the slices, they looked really old, she didn't want to make anything new since we were the only people there. I hesitated but thought - - just give it a shot, I'll trust her judgement that these will turn out okay after being warmed in the oven. They were hot alright, but I couldn't pour enough parmesan cheese and spices on the pizza for the life of me to cover up the staleness. Even my friend - who has lower pizza expectations than I do - kinda cringed. It was a 1 star experience, but I'll leave it at 2 just because you're the Onion, and it's been a tough transition, and it may have been an off night. Will I ever give you another chance? The husband and I had an appoint around the corner from this spot one afternoon and decided to stop in here for lunch before hand. We had been in the area before and I knew I wanted to check it out, because well it's pizza and I love pizza! They had lunch specials posted - 2 slices for $6.25. They had the premade pizzas out too that just needed to be heated up. I chose the Jamaican Jerk and pepperoni pizza slices, while Steve H chose the Veggie and pepperoni and sausage pizza slices. The slices were pretty big new york style I would say. The pizza was good all around and I enjoyed the Jamaican Jerk - it was spicy and sweet, plus it had pineapple! I love pineapple on my pizza! The crust could have been a little better in my opinion, but it was still good. FYI - the place is small - it is more of a grab and go type place really. They do have a bar with about 5 or 6 bar stools set up, but that is it for seating. I would definitely consider this as an A-OK lunch stop for some pizza. read more

I called the onion for pizza delivery and asked the guy who answered the phone what he recommended for approximately 8 people. He suggested 3 XL pizzas, which seemed like enough pizza to serve an entire frat house (he's probably used to UT orders). I ordered 2 xl's and 1 large instead: 1 xl pepperoni, 1 xl mushroom, and 1 large hamburger pizza (ick, but others seemed excited about it). 30 minutes later 3 hot pies arrived! The slices were huge and extra greasy as well. Not the best pizza I've ever had even in Austin (homeslice has them beat in my opinion), but I didn't shy away from eating a 2nd piece. After all, I had to try both the pepperoni and the mushroom. Also worth mentioning that the sauce has a little bit of a kick to it...and the pizza is especially hot when you dump a whole container of crushed red peppers on it as well (whoops). We did do a pretty good job of devouring the 3 pies so perhaps the guy who answered the phone wasn't totally off. After all, if there's anyone who can out eat a fraternity it would be a bunch of Yelp employees. read more

I was a fan of Hoeks and then came The Onion. It's awesome! Best pizza in town, and always hits the spot at 2:00 AM. I'd give them 5 stars except for this: they really suck at handling the 2:00 AM crowd. The cashiers (at least the girl in the outside window last weekend) are slooooow. My advice: 1. Get those cashiers to move. 2. Make the prices coin-less: something like $3 per slice, $5 for two. The little coins just slow you down! At least do it during the 1 AM - 3 AM rush. Please! The Onion is a small and quick walk in where the pizza is routinely made and then thrown under the classic heat lamps before being whisked away by one of many drunken passers by. Service is fast, friendly, and they take credit cards, which I appreciate. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? This is my primary gripe. I can walk through the streets of virtually any city in this country and get an edible slice of pie for $1. one. that's it. For whatever reason, here at The Onion they're of the opinion that they can charge $4.25 for a piece of pizza that, while decent size, isn't anything special. That's too much. Plain and simple. $4.25 can get me a chick fil a sandwich, a burger, or something else that's of much higher quality than this piece of pizza. No Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Let's break it down, although it's a bit difficult with something as simple as pizza: Crust: Not particularly flavorful, but good consistency Toppings: I went with sausage and jalapeños, and was honestly a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor from either. Good distribution and portions though - just at the expense of quality Cheese: It didn't all come off when I bit into it, so there's the win, but once again not too much flavor. If I could give this place a zero I would. As a native New Yorker we went into this place on the recommendation of another New Yorker. Highly recommend the pizza. First thing I noticed was the prize. 4.25 for a slice??? Craziness. Then the guy behind the counter proudly proclaimed that it was the cheapest slice downtown. A blatant lie. The Pizzaria around the corner was 2 dollars cheaper and on 6th Street propper. After making a mere observation to my friend that it was a little expensive for a slice. Good stuff! No real seating to speak of inside. So be prepared to lounge around on the planters it front, or walk. Crust is just right. Hand tossed and made in front of you by the only guy in the place. Nice fair share of toppings. Unique sauce. Didn't taste like canned nonsense. It was a little bit more spicy than most. But good. Came in to try the "Chicken George" pizza after it was suggested to us by a friend in Austin. (We were visiting from Houston) It was delicious!!! :-) The crust was just right! Prices were awesome as well. The staff was very polite! (They even looked up the nearest Post Office for us because we were looking for one.) Unfortunately we had to pay $20 for 2 hours of parking on a nearby lot. :-( That's TOTALLY not The Onion's fault though! So if you go...be prepared to pay more for parking than your entire meal! ;-) It's a cozy eatery..but we were the only patrons in at the time so it wasn't an issue. You can't make make pizza that tastes bad. That was the one unalienable truth I had left until The Onion took that from me today. I've never thought any pizza actually tasted bad (not even Totino's). Its also not like I went in looking to have my pizza mind blown, but (unfortunately) that's just what happened. So, this one star review is for the crust that tasted like nothing and the tomato "sauce" that looked and tasted like dried tomato paste with flecks of green stuff. Pizza is a holy trinity of crust, sauce, and cheese. They failed on the first two and it was serviceable on the cheese front. Thankfully I was hungry or that pizza would have been in a trashcan and not my stomach, and I would have been out a few more bones. So I was tipsy and so was my boyfriend and we were told that the Onion had the best pizza ever, and we of course believed them, but really....just average. Granted it is open late for the bar crowd, it is tiny inside and they quickly run out of their pizza selection the later it gets so come here before the bars close if you want variety to choose from! And that being said, their BBQ chicken pizza, wasn't quite bbquey (if that is a word ha) enough for me, but their classic pepperoni was much better and definitely a little more satisfying, but both pizzas could have been a little hotter. I like melted oozing cheese, and you could tell that these slices had been sitting there a little while, but still pretty cheap and open late and decent flavor. But for a place with bbq pizza which has onions on it and for the place being called the onion, you would think they would be a little more generous on the onion factor. read more

I'm writing a mini update based on Doug H.'s owner comment to my original review. He says, "We don't add anything to slices because it's already been fully baked once: to add things, then bake it again, burns part of it and leaves the additional stuff undercooked." I find it interesting that Cozzoli's successfully adds ingredients to an already cooked slice of cheese pizza without burning any part of the pizza in the reheating process. Based on that, you get no extra stars in my book, Onion. read more

I have been meaning to write a review of this establishment for a while now. I've had their pizza several times over the past 6 months and I must say, I have never been disappointed. All but once, I've ordered pizza on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, for delivery, so I can only speak to that (not to the individual slices purchased by wasted people at 2 am in the morning lol). Generally, when we order from here we do double pep, double cheese, and black olives. Yes, we splurge ;) But each time I have had it, it has been delicious. Perfect amount of cheese and toppings, not super greasy, and a crust that is not to doughy, but not too crisp. The sauce is delicious also, with just a lil kick of spice to get your taste buds excited. Needless to say, I find myself always choosing to order from here. The people are super friendly, we often even have the manager/owner deliver the pizza. It is affordable as well. I highly recommend this place. The only problem is their limited delivery hours during the week. Other than that, two thumbs up from this girl. read more

Ordered a pie for delivery downtown, and it was fast, hot, delicious, and even reasonably priced. A 14" pie was something like $12 for 2 toppings, and not even a delivery fee (downtown delivery only). Will definitely order from them again. Crust was medium thickness, fairly shewy, and toppings were solid. Sauce was excellent, I must say. Definitely a strong point. I just moved to Austin from New York City. In New York I grew to love pizza as it is pretty much on every block and is like nothing else. Since moving here I have been searching out a good pizza place to visit to get my fix. The Onion was recommended and I was told it was very "New York" like. This is not the truth at all. Now it is more "New York" than some of the other places around here. The slices are reasonably big and it isn't to bad a slice, but I was expecting a little more. I would recommend this if someone was walking home at 2am after a night out. It isn't to bad and the alternative for downtown pizza is not great. In fact the alternative makes this place look like a 5 star restaurant. So overall not best, but you could do a WHOLE lot worse around here. read more

My absolute favorite pizza place! So excited that it reopened and didn't close breaking my heart forever! After many successful nights of carousing, the Onion is my favorite place to end up. About 4 years ago I went out with one thought in mind. Dance with my boots on. That, I managed to do without any problems but what I did forget to do was eat...anything...all day. I had been to the Onion plenty of times before and I knew exactly where to go to catch my second wind. Apparently, so did everyone else. Standing room only was just fine with me. Except for one minor detail, I was standing over a trash can. At the time, it couldn't have mattered to me less. In fact, it mattered to me so little that when the obnoxious drunk guy with no regard for space or crowds slammed into the back to me and my slice when flying into the trash can, I simply picked it off the top, checked it for spit or anything else unidentifiable and finished that sucker right up. Yup, I ate out of a public trash can. My favorite motto about the place when recommending it to my friend's is "so good I ate it right outta the trash." My other favorite memory is going there outfitted in the most obnoxious turkey costume that you ever did see. Thanksgiving rolled around and it being a day that my friend was less than excited about working. So what needed to be done here other than showing up to his bar dressed in my best turkey! I didn't however, make it to user friendly to take on and off, so I spent the rest of the night gobbling around 5th street.
