01 - Whole Chicken with 2 Side Orders and Pita Family Meal
    Ming C.

Ordered delivery from The Original American Chicken and it was quickly put together and in my hands within half an hour. I opted for a family meal: 1 Whole Chicken, pita bread, and 2 sides. $18.50 if ordering in-store, but with delivery it came out to be about $25 including taxes and service fee. There's a decent selection of 20 sides, but not a lot of them enticed me. I ended up with a potato salad and yuca/cassava. The potato salad is not bad, but the yuca was a bit dry and flavorless. The chicken was good and moist though! It's lightly seasoned, so I added some of my own spices on top because I like extra flavors

Doesn't look like a great big establishment. But it fits quite a enough people inside. They have plenty of people coming in and out. I have ordered the white meat chicken with the 2 sides plantains rice and beans. So delicious!! You get your monies worth here. They are always pleasant and friendly. They have a small eating area with 2 tables. But for the most part everyone gets there food to go. They have a wonderful desert selection to choose from.

If I could give a minus 5 stars for customer service I would. Today I placed an order for delivery and the some of the items were missing when I opened my order. I ordered chicken and also ribs and I only got the chicken and not even the right size. I never ordered rice and they sent me rice. I called them and from the minute I mentioned that my order was wrong they got so defensive and rude. The lady who takes the orders basically told me that she was too busy to be wasting her time talking to me. I requested to be transfer to a manager she responded that he was also busy and did not have time either. She was extremely rude. I offered to send pictures because at at point I felt that the least they could do as a business was to offer me an apology and she was screaming that they did not have emails, nothing where I could make a complaint. Never ordering from this place again. Very rude and unprofessional.

I come here pretty often for dinner. They have decent portions. I like how the chicken tastes tender and juicy! I usually order the chicken drumstick, chicken thigh, and bean salad. If you like barbecue, then this is your place. Inside there is seating, but not for a huge group.

This was our first time eating here. We got delivery last night. The person who took our order was very polite and the delivery arrived in a reasonable amount of time. Sam had the spicy chicken wing zing sandwich deluxe. I ordered a Diet soda and the sirloin beef kabob with yellow rice and corn. Sam tells me he liked the fries, but the patty wasn't what he would call spicy. (He adores spicy food btw.) It also didn't resemble chicken. It was a preformed breaded chicken patty. He had ordered extra "green sauce" which was, according to him "like tomatillo or salsa Verde combined with the chutney you get at your table in Indian restaurants." Since 4 tiny dipping cups of it came in the bag, we assume it is included with all deliveries in some quantity. As for mine? It wasn't what I ordered. A) I ordered "Sirloin Beef" and got chicken. B) The corn was so bland in its own right, that it tasted like the yellow rice it had been delivered with. C) The yellow rice was the most under-cooked portion of rice I can ever recall being served. After 3 bites I surrendered and simply couldn't eat it at all. D) The chicken itself had seasoning, but was so close to dried out as to be sad face inducing. Lucky for me I keep home made BBQ sauce in the house at all times! The pita bread was fine and plain as normal. All things considered, I'd MUCH rather eat from one of the local carts (like the one on 82nd/37th ave) where you get the same reasonable prices for bigger portions of better cooked food.

I would gave them a 2 star for yesterday's experience. First, the place was empty on a Friday night at 10:00pm. Probably have 3 takeout order while we were sitting down. The first time I went was on a weekday night back in December, and there were more patrons. Not sure if the place is going down hill, but they dont have slushies anymore. We had the mango slushies the first time, and the only drinks available was whatever bottle drinks they have in the fridge. Mind you, they dont serve you water, so you have to get drinks since the food is garlicky or spicy. We wound up getting the milk tea ice rice this time. It was ok. I never tried it, but the rice is a bit hard. I won't order again. Best dish is large eggplant. Very flavorable, maybe a bit too garlicky. Will order this again. Also, the chicken wing is huge, for the price of $3 each. Thats why we ordered 2 chicken wing this time. But, I think it wasnt grilled as nice as my first time. Still good since it is a lot of meat for the price of $3. Lotus root is also pretty good, glazed with sugar. The worst i would say is the lamb, a bit too chewy, lack of flavor. The bathroom has all sorts of postcard of famous album. I found that pretty neat. Lastly, I think the squid tentacles is much smaller than before.

It was so cold out the night I went so I was very happy they kept it nice and warm inside the restaurant. There's a very large selection of skewers, they have basically everything you could want. I especially appreciate that you can order just one of any skewer, unlike some other places where certain types only come in orders of 3 etc, allowing you to order a large variety even if you're dining alone. The seasoning was delicious, and every skewer was not coated in identical seasoning. None of it was spicy at all if that's what you're looking for, but none were lacking in flavor. The meat was juicy and you could taste the smoke from the grill. I loved the different textures of vegetables which were all well cooked. I'm still thinking about the crunchy exterior of the rice cake. I think my favorite skewer was the lotus root, which was perfecting complimented by the seasoning mix. An amazing meal! 16 skewers came out to less than $50. I look forward to returning!

The venue is mostly outdoors with a few indoor tables and two bars. Drinks here are well priced and the specials are even better - I paid $5 for a tequila spritz last time I was here. The meat here is really tender and the sides absolutely slap. Even if you're coming here with a vegetarian there are solid options - the mac and cheese and cole slaw are my favorites. Also I never thought I'd be okay with paying $7 for pickles but the half sours here absolutely slap. It was my first time having Chinese BBQ cart skewers and I was an instant fan. I've gone back a bunch, taking other people with me. By far my favorites are the lamb, pork, and enoki mushroom, ordered spicy of course. The lamb is so tender, and the mushrooms are just so fun to eat. They're slippery, they are hard to chew, they don't break apart, they get stuck in my teeth, and I end up swallowing large bites which are covered in that spicy sauce and make me choke and...I just love it! I can't explain it, there's something about the chewiness and heat that while inconvenient, I really enjoy. The beef is also solid. The squid is OK. The chicken gizzards are not bad, I'm still developing a taste for them but they are not overcooked and tough here. The only thing I'd say to skip are the shrimp, they come out with their shells still on and are just rubbery. Cash only, if it's not obvious. If you buy something like $20 or more they give you a free soda. They have some stools set up if you want to eat it right there, but they're usually under the awning of New Golden Sparkling market and well, there's a lot of birds and bird poop there. I would just walk with it. There are lots of BBQ carts up and down Broadway, but I think the meat here is the best (not tough or fatty), and the service is always great. The main guy manning the grill doesn't speak too much English, but there's usually a younger guy helping him who does. Even without the help, ordering is easy, you just say the type of skewer you want, how many, and if you want it spicy. If you're really struggling, point! But it's never come to that.

The cut of ribs were good but slightly dry. Was recommended the beans (good) with white rice (dry) by the cashier. Dark meat was the best. First bites of the white meat & ribs were dry, but got better towards the middle. The green sauce was watery and didn't have much flavor. Not sure why everyone raves about green sauce. Communication was easy (English, Cantonese, or Spanish) & they had a steady flow of customers, of all backgrounds. I would get the food to go, the dining area is one long, narrow room and for whatever reason the floor was very wet. I guess it's good that they mopped at 4 PM? There were a few guys that were either workers or hanging out at the far back tables, one or two middle-age couples dining in. It was just kind of a sad ambience. The cashier recommended the Lomo Saltado next time. Maybe I went at a slow time, 4 PM Friday. First bite of food at home was decent, but nothing overwhelming. I would stick to all dark meat! My favorite is the Fish Congee, but the Sampan Congee is another favorite of mine. In general, all of the congees are consistently good. As for the roast meats, I think their best item is the Soy Sauce Chicken, which is made well. The rest are decent, but I would rather go to Five Loaves & Two Fishes nearby instead. The stuff I would skip here are items like their Wonton Noodle and Rice Rolls. Both are made poorly and not up to par versus the best around. Anyway, I believe this is not a Cantonese roast meat shop that can deliver everything I want. Regardless, I rarely drive by without stopping in to pick up some congee and possibly half a Soy Sauce Chicken.

Shun Wang is one of the 2 joints in Elmhurst that serve authentic, fast-style food nostalgic to most of us from Cantonese households. If you grew up going to Big Wong and Wing Wong (or any place with a clear view of a hanging roast pig on the window), Shun Wang will bring back nostalgia. I'm biased since I spent a good chunk of my childhood eating this kind of food in Chinatown, but Shun Wang's food is just sufficient enough to fill those cravings. Their price points are pretty high for Elmhurst (where most restaurants haven't raised the prices the way Chinatown or Flushing have, luckily), and their food is just OK. I mainly go for the sake of eating something I'm familiar with my whole life, and people I can still speak the language with. My parents go to their Flushing location and said that the quality has fallen since covid.
