I'm honestly extremely disappointed with my experience at The Original Donut Shop today. My mom and I stopped by to get a few carne guisada tacos, and this is normally a place we've always enjoyed. I've been coming here since I was a kid and have always had good experiences, which makes what happened today even more disappointing. We both took a bite of our tacos and immediately noticed that they tasted burned. We couldn't eat them, so I called the restaurant to make a complaint. I was told to bring the tacos back, so I did. When I brought them back, the "manager" asked me, "Where's the rest of the taco?" I explained that I had taken a bite, realized it tasted burned, and spit it out. She then told me she couldn't replace the tacos unless I had the entire taco. I understand needing proof of an issue, but expecting a customer to bring back an entire taco after they've already taken a bite and spit it out because it tasted burned is unreasonable. What bothered me most was the way the situation was handled. There was no real attempt to make things right or acknowledge that we had paid for food we couldn't eat. It's especially disappointing because this was a place I grew up going to and genuinely loved. After the way I was treated today, I will never be coming back. DoorDash Review: A San Antonio classic. Despite "Donut Shop" being in their name, they seem more popular for the breakfast tacos. I can see why. They stuff these bad boys so they're bursting at the seams. On a whim, I wanted to take a break from my current breakfast taco and see what The Original Donut Shop had to offer. I ordered my usual: A potato, bacon, egg, and cheese taco. The bacon was finely chopped, which isn't the way I like to enjoy bacon in my tacos, and it was very egg-heavy. But it was still tasty. The order didn't come with salsa, so that was a bit of a bummer, too. I also ordered a half dozen of donuts, because they were extremely affordable. They picked the flavors for me and as I made my way through them throughout the week, I was amazed how soft they remained. Normally donuts will get a little stale after a day but these stayed pretty soft. The one I liked the most had a maple glaze. In addition to the above, I also got a carne guisada taco to save for dinner later. It was excellent, though I did need to floss my teeth after, haha. How in the world have I not written about my love affair with the Original Donut Shop??? Their breakfast tacos are the things dreams are made of. My favorite is the toasted bean, cheese, and bacon. Gosh, I become a bottomless pit. Their homemade tortillas are delicious, fluffy, pillowy goodness. Their tacos are stuffed with any delicious combination you can think of. I've never had a taco I didn't enjoy!! And if you prefer a sweet breakfast, they offer an assortment of equally pillowy, light, tasty sweet donuts. Technically nothing, but they do have extreme peak times in the restaurant and in the drive thru. You can order online for pickup, but sometimes that pickup line is down the street. I was compelled to leave a review since this has been so hyped up by many people. Sadly, it failed to meet expectations....disastrously. This was my first time visiting The Original Donut Shop and may be the last. There are two lines to order from inside, which I didn't notice at first. Apparently I ordered from the "taco side". I was told to take my receipt blahblah (mumbled) Since I didn't understand I asked a different young lady what was I supposed to do? "WHAT do you WANT??" "This is my first time here, I didn't understand what she said." "Go over there" points to the other register. I walked over and I honestly should have asked for a refund because there were flies around the donuts. I get it, the drive-thru window is right there close to the donut case, but there should be a better system in place to control that. The donut doors were just left open, so there weren't any measures taken to prevent the flies from getting to the donuts. When I looked at the options the Boston Cream Filled is not what I typically get, it was a glazed cream filled donut without the chocolate icing on top. I asked if I could switch it since I wanted something with chocolate and I switched for a chocolate donut filled with Boston Cream. I shared my donuts with some coworkers and we all agreed, the glazed was nothing special, the chocolate donut didn't have a chocolate flavor and the cinnamon roll wasn't a roll, it was a piece of bread with the cinnamon swirl design on top but the bread was one piece. The salt packets they provide + the salsa added the perfect amount of flavor and spice I needed. We also got some donuts as well. The donuts are affordable, large, and delicious. I ate a chocolate glazed donut in a couple quick bites and wish I got more than 1. Long time residents and foodies of San Antonio know The Original Donut is a classic SA establishment. Their toasted bean and cheese is an essential dish of the city. While the shop is known for tacos more than their donuts, that doesn't mean that it should be this way. The tacos here are sized and priced as a steal. For $10 you'll get three or four jumbo tacos on freshly made flour tortillas. The let down is in the taste. Each taco tastes pretty, well, bland. Black pepper is missing in most of them, and salt is missing in all of them. Salt and pepper packs are provided, but guests should have to add flavor themselves. Imagine cooking eggs in a pan at home with only a little butter. Those are the eggs used in these tacos. Taco ingredients need salt. Without it you get these tacos which are admittedly fine, but fine doesn't cut it in a city with many excellent taco options. The Original Donut Shop should promote their donuts far more because they are a completely different story to their tacos. There are a few donut houses around town that make a mighty fine donut, but I promise you the donuts here are better. Way better. For $10 you can get a dozen mixed donuts of your choosing and become everyone's favorite in the office. The donuts look good, smell great, and taste bonkers good! Maybe this isn't a convenient location to get to, but it's worth getting here just for fresh morning donuts. Once you're know that parking isn't easy. The drive thru line regularly extends down a very busy Fredericksburg Rd causing back ups. Bypass the line and enter their compact but useful parking lot and go in for your order. This will save you time especially if you're not in a hurry. So overall come for the donuts and skip the tacos. Try a toasted bean and cheese because it is a legacy food of San Antonio, but outside that, save the calories for another chocolate glazed or seasonal donut. read more

Over the past year I have heard from family & friends that the quality and/ or service here has completely gone down, and places they now go to over the original donut shop. I have fought hard for this place, I've been a ride or die until today. I went this morning, asked for an extra toasted bean and cheese. Not sure if they are just trying to keep the line moving but I received my taco within 2 minutes, I opened it right away and it was a cold taco, that had not been toasted even slightly. No napkins, no hot sauce. This is about the 3rd time I have received a screwed up to-go order; and the order that broke the camels back. The young girl who manages the window, seems to always have an attitude, and then to have lately consistently received a screwed up order; has officially pulled my support of this place. Also, what's up the cold donuts!! Sadly, this place is slowly going down. New owners, new management, not sure what it is BUT there's other places in SA that are far more better. It is definitely super busy (both inside & drive thru) so parking can be a bit tough. Once we got inside, the line moved quickly and the food came out decently fast also. Came in on Sunday morning and the drive through line was already out onto the road. Luckily, was able to find parking and came inside. Lines were a bit long but they move fast so don't give up just because you see a big wait. Tacos: Tacos are large and come in a freshly heated flour tortilla. The tortillas are different than what you'd find in a grocery store: a bit thicker and fluffier. I believe these are made in house, based on the reviews. They come with two types of salsas which are above average. Bean & Cheese Taco - $2 Exactly what it says: refried beans and cheese taco, but it's a great value with the amount you get for the price. Chorizon & Egg - $2.50 This taco was a bit blander than what I was hoping for, but they had salsa I could add to it. Again, a great value for the price. Barbacoa - $4.00 This taco is only available on a weekend. Good flavor but wish it had something other than just meat (e.g. onions, cilantro). Again, at least they had salsa. Carne Guisada - $3.50 I believe this is a meat stew like taco. Good flavor, was something new so glad I tried it! Papa Ranchera - $2 This was just potatoes and something else that made it red. This was a recommendation by the person who took my order. It was pretty good considering I had low expectations when I opened up the taco. Apple Fritter - $2 The apple fritter was made some time before I actually got it, however, it was quite fluffy. I don't even really like apple fritters but this one was one I could actually eat and enjoy, which says a lot! Boston Cream Filled Donut - $1.25 Super dense and the Boston cream was meh. Wouldn't recommend this one. All in all, a great experience! I can see why they're so packed. Good flavor for great value. We have been going to The Original Donut Shop for more than 15 years! Today they got my order wrong, I notice it after getting home. So I called them and the person answered the phone was very overwhelmed. I understood, since I have worked in the restaurant industry as a GM, server, back of the house. All positions. Finally they passed the phone to someone that said she was the "GM" I asked her for her name after she asked me more than once what was my name was. She told me "I don't need to give you my name" "this is a private business". "I don't know who you are". That's so crazy to me that you as a "GM" can't give my a name. She told me to bring the tacos back and they would fix it. I would love to bring back the tacos at a later time but she didn't even give me the time of day to solve the problem.
