Food is fine, ambience is great, but service is lacking. I had food from Tia's years ago and remember it being good and hearing good things since. A family member chose to come here so I was looking forward to it. The waitress seemed really put out and my cousin (who is in the food industry) suggested it is because gratuity is included in the final price. I'm not sure if that's for all dinners or just our group of approximately ten. She gave most everyone their own bowl of chips and dips. One person in the group didn't receive any and she never brought them out when asked. Asked for lemon, they didn't have lemon. After she bought me my dish, she came out a few minutes later and micro aggressively asked if everything was ok. She didn't ask my husband, who had his food brought out at the same time. Upon arrival, we thought we had to go up to the counter to order and then sit down as we wait for the food. We were not aware of the fact that we had to sit down and someone will come and take our order, which ended up taking about 15 minutes. The food was honestly okay, I got the bean and cheese taco and i enjoyed that, but I also got the chicken fajita taco and the flavor and taste of the chicken was definitely lacking. After seeing Tia's Taco Hut on Texas Eats show (channel 12 ABC) decided to try (Saturday 12/21/24). Tacos were legit! Good bean and cheese and spicy potatoes and egg. We waited far too long for our food--several tables that arrived after us were served well before we even got our plates. This restaurant is in a refurbished retro gas station located downtown on N. St. Mary's Street by Providence Catholic School. It's a short walk from work. Smelled great when we walked in -- spices and meats. Our meal started out right with crisp chips and just-spicy-enough salsa. Would you trade a charming decor for good food and service? I will tell you I have gone to taco palaces in the Westside where even the most adventurous Yelper would never tread. I'll be kind before I unload my experience into the alley with the rest of the uneaten menudo. Firstly there is parking in the back. They have drive thru service. It reminds me of a more polished "Las Palapas." The frustrating thing for me is that the place is charming inside. They have chairs that have images of Pedro Infante, calaveras etc. Ana Gabriel is blaring up above as part of their background music. It's interesting a generation back it was a Pik Nik convenient store. The changes are stark now so why did I not like this particular location? When I went in with company I was confused by the set up. Do you seat yourself or do you go up to the counter to order? There is absolutely no signage to indicate what protocol is. As I entered the establishment two parties followed in after me. The server saw us enter first and rather than servicing our table she went to the bigger party and to a pair of policeman. Was this to get the bigger tip? I understand that there is a labor shortage and that affects service. However there were two other servers basically huddled around a Christmas Tree trying to decorate it. When the server finally came to our table she dumped menus onto our table and left. When the food finally arrived, which felt like seasons the tacos were small and skimpy. The flour tortillas were soggy and seemed machine made. The carne guisada taco had one big chunk of meat and the rest was a messy gravy sauce. The bean and cheese taco was the better of the two. Even then it could be finished in two chomps. On my right hand I can tell you the best service I have ever had. On my other one, the worst service. This experience counts as the latter. Who goes to a restaurant to be ignored? Who has so much time that they would sit forever for two mediocre tacos? The service was terrible. The food is a notch above Taco Cabana. I'll admit the place is charming but even I am beyond those trappings. I know people laud this place as they should.
