This was my first visit to this location. You enter and pay at the cashier before being lead to your seat. The food preparation area is set up buffet style with the large flat top grill at the end. I like the option to build your own bowl of meat, veggies, and sauces. I chose the noodles with a little bit of all meats and then topped with some good veggies and sweet fruits like pineapple. They had a menu of the sauces on the wall above along with a "recipe" various styles of meals so you can choose the flavors you want and how much you should add of each. I added a few different ones leaning toward the sweet versus the savory. You can also add a bowl of white sticky rice on the side to supplement the dish. They had hard ciders available as well. I tried one that hit the spot. The waitress was attentive and came by to make sure we were doing ok, and keeping our waters full. They weren't too busy since it was later in the evening, but the food was still fresh. I will likely come back again when I'm in the area. read more

Ate here on 7/3 and it was terrible. Nearly every empty table was dirty with used dishes. The food line had noodles, veggies, and meat scattered all along it and had obviously not been wiped down for quite some time. I don't necessarily fault the staff, because there was only one kid taking care of the entire dining room. He was running as fast as he could but obviously needed more help. My husband and I along with our four children just went to eat here. The waitress asked my husband if we'd ever been in before he told her no and she told him to just grab a bowl and fill it up. So that's what all of us did including our 4 children ages 7 and under. halfway through the meal we saw the menu and how children under 10 get a special price and how each bowl size is a different price for adults. We had no idea so we all just grabbed a big bowl (our children only filling them up halfway) and ended the meal paying double what we would have if we had been instructed properly by the waitress on how to pick our bowls based on each bowl price. This restaurant just lost our business because of the lack of clarity and transparency. The food wasn't nearly as good as HuHot and there wasn't a good selection to choose from. Sat right away as there were only a couple tables in the place at 7 on a friday. Should have been first clue. Server was nice but rarely seen and brought wrong drinks. overheard another table she did the same at. Food was pretty disappointing. I mean you already know they use the cheapest and poorest quality ingredients. I was pretty shocked to see a large one pass at $18.99. So me and my kids fill up our bowls and head to the wok. no cooks to be found. we wait around a couple minutes finally the cooks come from the back. the wok are not kept hot. so they fire them up to order. problem is these jokers fired them up and dumped my bowl while the grill was only look warm. as it came to temp the juices basically boiled my food. that will should be hot and sear that bowl. This place was relatively clean, and not busy on a Saturday for lunch. Prices are standard, and had a causal ambiance. The reason for the low stars: I'm allergic to jalapeños. I went through with my food, the grill wasn't cleaned after the few people before me, which is what it is. But unfortunately, someone had jalapeños in their meal which then transfered to mine. I politely went to the waitress and explained the situation and asked if I could remake my food and have them clean the grill. The lady was nice and said sure and took my old bowl. As this waitress went to take it to the back, she passed I'm assuming her boss? Who asked her "what was wrong with it?" To which the waitress told her "It was too spicy". I immediately got up and told them that is not correct, I have an allergy. To which the boss lady loudly announced "Oh I hope it's not severe. We cannot guarantee there won't be cross contamination of any kind, and we cannot guarantee you won't have any allergic reactions to things." In the end, I paid our bill and left. So while this establishment cannot guarantee an allergy free experience, I can guarantee I will not be dining here again. read more

Went to this place that my wife and I used to go when we were in CDA. We have another home and come back to this beautiful city for Spring and Summer. Well when we walked in it was very quiet and a host who I think was the new owner greeted us very politely and sat us down. I was looking forward to having some delicious Mongolian bbq and ordering my favorite Asian beer Sapporo. Well she left to go get our drinks and came back with a beer menu and asked me what beer I wanted. I said Sapporo and looked at the menu and didn't see it. I was really disappointed because there is nothing like a cold Sapporo to wash down spicy Mongolian bbq. So I was forced to get a Modelo instead. Bummer! Then got my food and it tasted pretty good. Didn't recognize the cooks as the same ones from months before so I'm getting the feeling this is new ownership now. Found out I was right! Well my food was pretty good but my wife's was undercooked. Especially with chicken and tofu in hers which she likes to see well done. I guess the cook made it pretty fast and it didn't come out the way she wanted. She wasn't satisfied with her food of course and I remember it being done really well before. Then we got our check and we're charged for dinner even though dinner starts at 4 and we got there about 3:35. Well my first trip there was no shrimp out. Then second trip there was. So I put some in my bowl. We should have been charged for lunch price rather than dinner. I wasn't going to argue except I did point it out and all I got was I only work here I don't make the rules. There is a reason that hardly any people were there. I'm not going back! Huge disappointment for us. The new ownership is only concerned about making money and they decided to save money probably and we're going to pay less to the cooks that were there. Not recommending this place at all. Our meal was very large as we were dining with 9 people. Staff was very attentive and constantly asking about refills. The food was the most amazing food I've eaten since I've been in idaho, and it's no stretch of the truth. The meal was spicey, and the chefs offered advice on how to change the flavor of the food, there wasn't many people inside and we were seated fairly quickly. The food was nothing to brag about sauces were watery, staff said need a lot of sauce when cooking for flavor. Turned out don't matter how much sauce you use it had no flavor it was like eating watered down noodles sauce was so week in flavor you couldn't use enough sauce to get flavor... For the money I honestly would recommend going to hu hot it cheaper and food is a lot better then here.. I would not recommend this place and will never go back unless the had a Hell's Kitchen make over. I say don't waste your time. The only thing missing from the food line was Lamb, but I can excuse that due to cost and decidedly few people who want it. That said, real Mongolian BBQ was centered around mutton. Also the rice served is too sticky like what should be used to make nigiri. That's it for the bad.. The food line has always been well stocked during my visits and they have a large selection of sauces with tips and advice on their usage posted nearby. The cooking is true Mongolian over high heat and constantly kept moving. Their nearest competitor cooks at low temps where one chef cooks 6 to 8 bowls at a time and winds up like "ordinary fry cook" fare. Seating is adequate and easy to get around the restaurant and prices are reasonable. The staff has always been courteous and friendly. Delicious Mongolian BBQ spot with AYCE option. They have many selection on veggies and sauces to choose from for your stir fry. Beef, pork, chicken, & imitation crab are the meat choices. Staff was very friendly and restaurant was clean with a cozy atmosphere. I do recommend you ask the chef on blending the sauces if you don't really know what combination blends well together. Mongolian BBQ is one of my favorites and being from CA (I know, I hate that I'm from there as much as you do) I have high standards as the one from my hometown is best I've ever been to. The waitresses were extremely friendly and always made sure my drink was full. The variety of food is great and I like the fact that they have the meat at the end of the line since it can weight down on the veggies and noodles. I will say the food was mediocre at best but there are a couple factors to why I say that: 1) I've only been to this Mongolian BBQ once and you really need to go a few times to figure out the combination of sauces that are to your liking. 2) The food being good really relies on you and ingredients you choose, not the cooks. 3) I didn't think my hometown's Mongolian BBQ was good the first time either. So for now, I give 3 stars but when I give it a few more tries and figure out the combination of sauces that are to my liking, I'm sure I'll be back for a better review. read more

This place was so much fun & the food was delicious! I've never been to a place like this, so was a bit nervous as to how to build my bowl, what sauces to use and then of course what combination would hit the spot. I was asked to put all my favorite things in the bowl, then when I got to the end of the line the chef asked how I usually like my food. I told him, not too salty, some garlic and very spicy. I trusted him & he mixed the most amazing combination & did this for our party of 8. He even checked back to make sure we all liked the food. I had been really pleased with The Original Mongolian BBQ until my last trip there. The food had always been pretty good (not amazing), and I was happy to have a place like this in town. The only thing that has always bugged me is the hours, not being open on Sunday, and not being open very late. Another bummer is the 20 minutes you get to stand in line watching everyone's food get cooked. It can really take forever. Other than that, it has always been a good experience, until my last visit. My last visit was terrible. We made a mistake and miscounted how many people would be in our party. Small children for whatever reason make counting a bit more complicated because of high chairs and such. We were sat at a table that had 7 chairs. We had literally just sat down, no drinks, no mess on the table or anything like that. I told the hostess that we would like to move to a nearby table that had seating for 8 because we had miscounted. She looked at me and said, "Why do you want to move, that table has the same number of chairs." I pointed out that very clearly it didn't. She rolled her eyes and walked away. That was super irritating. I can't stand a rude staff. We ate and everything was good. When it came time to split up the check there was more confusion, but this time it was the hostesses part. More eye rolling. She made a super rude comment to my grandmother. That was it for me. I was about to lose my temper. My wife suggested asking for the manager and I told her I didn't want to make a scene so I would wait outside. My wife asked to speak to a manager and was told that they basically do not have a manager. That was all the more concerning for me, because without a manager, there is no accountability. I don't really want to eat somewhere where teenagers are running the show from start to finish with no oversight. That experience ruined this establishment for me. I haven't been back since that night. The server who was rude had long red hair, in case a manager or someone actually reads this. I'm pretty sure this won't matter soon though. I tried the competition out last Friday, and I definitely have a new go to spot. I have a feeling that 2019 will be The Original Mongolian BBQ's last year in business. I cannot see how they could possibly compete. This is too bad, and outside of the last experience, I probably wouldn't have been in such a hurry to try out the new place. read more

To Be quite Honest I haven't eatan at this particur restaurant, but I have been at one of their sister businesses in Boise (the Original Store). Actually my son is 27 years old now, and he was a baby when we would go into the Restuarant. A little older Asian Lady would come and take him out of his baby seat, take him back to the Kitchen and get him a box of fortune cookies. She even rigged up a set of the bamboo balsa chop sticks with a rubber band so he could learn to use his chop sticks. I am writting a review as I have looked a long time for Mongolian BBQ that I could compare to that particular store in Boise as well a another BBQ in Sacramento CA. Most seem to have the concept down with some really good products, but it has been my opnion that Americans have tried to ruin the Brand (Type of Cooking). BD's BBQ is one such brand. You have to understand that I am a caucasion that grew up in a small country town in Kansas, so it makes since that if I like it, that it most have been a different experience. The key to Americans hurting the Idea is by the cooking and some of the choises of products that go in the bowl. When I first learned about this type of cooking, Moisture was the key, the Aisians always said you needed to put I think like 5 spoon fulls of liquid in your bowl with your meats and vegetables. They would then use water bottles to add additional steam why it was cooking. In alot of reviews as well as me visiting some Mongolian BBQ in Wichita KS, they have refrained from using much water in response to what the people want. Carmalization on the meat or a crust. That was not the original intent of healthy cooking. Nor does it help the Resturant keep a clean cooking surface. Anyway I am glad to see the "The Original Mongolian BBQ" in Northern Idaho. I lived 3 years up in Spokane during the mid 1980s and my daughter still lives up in that area. I actually visited Coeur D'alene in 2020, and wa shocked to see some of the changes of the area. Would like to rate 3 1/2 stars. Service was prompt and friendly, even educating us newbies. It is a great option being allowed to fill your own bowl from all of the freshly prepared options on the raw food line. Lots of vegetables, freshly frozen shaved meats, and even fruit. I chose a couple of orange slices and have to admit they were the highlight of my bowl. I don't recall eating cooked oranges, though I do love all things orange! Also many options of how much to eat; different sized bowls with leftover take home available to all you can eat, not allowing any take away. The smallest bowl was enough for me for lunch at only $7.45. We were delighted after having the sauces explained and our bowls grilled up for us to return to our table finding little rice bowls, so lovely. My not rating the full 5 stars is that the atmosphere is very simple, buffet style and could use some updating, in my opinion. read more

We have been going here for years and the food is pretty good. However, we stopped by recently and had a different experience. We went through the line as usual and when we got up to the cook guys (both grills were going) they both just up and left. Poof! Gone. It was 4 of us in our line and 5 in the other line. The opposite cook returned after 5 minutes and started cooking the other people's food even though we were there first. I asked where the other cook was and all we got for a reply was a lame "oh he's in the back". We decided to leave with no sign of our cook in sight. I had to go back into the resturant to get my glasses and the cook still wasn't there. Total time: 10 minutes. The waitress was very understanding but it didn't fix the problem. If the owner is reading this, I'd appreciate if your cook staff didn't have an attitude. Don't let a 16 yr old cook tell you that you need more sauce. Any other time it was so so. Well then they closed down around Christmas or New Years of 2016. Well they re-opened a couple months ago and the place has gone way down hill the awesome waitress now only works Sunday evenings we found out the hard way. We went in at 7:45pm Thursday evening our waitress wasn't there we decided to give it a shot anyways. Our blonde waitress sat us at a dirty table and said she'll clean it while we get our food. We went and got our bowls and took them to the cooks. my cook dumped my food onto his grill that looked like it hadn't been cleaned all day. My wife got lucky and got the young guy to cook her food. he's a great cook and actually cleans his grill (he use to work Sunday mornings too). we got to our table our waters were there but no rice. 15 mins later the waitress was walking by our table and I had to shout out to get her attention I asked if we could get a refill on our waters and if rice still comes with the meal, she laughed and said yes just a sec. She never came back then when she brought us our check 15 mins after that I asked again. Can I get our rice and a To go box she left. 10 mins later she returned and brought our rice and to go boxes and had the nerve to try to fill our water glasses. I told her not to waste the water. No they were not busy. They we're doing all there close up stuff while we were eating the waitress was counting money the cooks were cooking and washing down the walls and counters. We will never eat here again! The owner should really look into getting better staff or just shut down for good. Nice people good food they only cook one persons food on a grill at each time and they have 2 grills. So obvioly the pros are not getting the person in fronts water cheatnuts but cons are you wait a little longer if a line has formed.......they aparently have a kids bowl i got for my son the sign was in the middle so i grabbed the bowl under it.....got charged for a mighty kahn so make sure you ask how that works. Also eveeytime i get a little kahn i have only been charged the right price 1 time. (Ive been here 3 times) maybe i will stop being shy and ask what the mix up is. read more

Worst service ever. As an employer, I would fire every employee that worked tonight. Cold burned rice, filthy floors and crappy customer service. The server spilled soda all over me, didn't ask to refill it. Was given old burned rice then told to pretty much deal with it. Everyone was rude. There was food all over the floor and counters.
