The red onion in el cerrito is superior. It's been awhile but I was not happy with the burger or the fries.

Great little neighborhood place. That serves yummy burgers, crinkle cut french fries and wonderful milkshakes. It's a small place. There's only about eight stools at the counter. We ordered a hamburger cut in half a small order of french fries and a medium chocolate milkshake. We shared the food and the milkshake. It was very yummy. The service was great. They make their own in-house pickles and pickled jalapeños. It's a good quick lunch and we really enjoyed it. read more

Homemade Japanese-style sweet pickles. The restaurant was so clean that while I was leaving I saw from the doorway that a piece of lettuce had fallen onto the floor where I had been seated, and it embarrassed me. They have burgers, shakes, hot dogs, ice scream, hot chocolate, and more! Parking: They have a few parking spots on lot and along the side there is plenty of street parking. Seats: They have 8 bar seats inside and they have a couple of tables outside (each with 4 seats). Open Kitchen: It's really cool that you can sit at the bar and see all the food be made. It's not as common these days to find fast food burger places like this. Very neat! Staff: Everyone on the staff team are all friendly and personable. I was there on the first day reopening and saw multiple customers who came in who had come before it had reopened. Given the great service I can see why they'd keep wanting to come back! Food: The burgers and fries are delicious! I'd definitely come back here again! I ordered the original red burger combo with fries. The burger is 1/3 pound which is larger than the normal 1/4 pound they often offer at other burger places. The meat patty was juicy and the bread was also thicker to match the larger meat patty. All the ingredients: the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions were all very fresh! The fries were crispy and crinkle cut. I ordered a coke and it was perfectly blended. Red Onion is fine but the prices no longer make any sense. A large milkshake (soft serve, not real ice cream) was $5.99 two years ago, now it is over $9. Inflation is high but that is like a 75%+ increase, seems like some greedflation has hit all the El Sob businesses but some are definitely pushing the envelope more than others. Y'all are a burger joint, not a fine dining establishment - affordability is part of the point. read more

The fried chicken patty, fish patty, and onion rings were pre-battered, and unfortunately, the oil used for frying was old, resulting in a less-than-appetizing flavor. The peanut butter and banana shake was disappointing, as they used whole peanuts instead of peanut butter, and added chunks of frozen banana, making it gritty and hard to drink. Overall, I'd rate the experience a D+. A few suggestions: consider making fresh batter for all dishes that need it, use a blender with real ice cream, and stick to advertised ingredients--peanuts are not the same as peanut butter! read more

I had to stop coming here when the previous owners took over, like I'm sure many other regulars did. But enough about that, IT'S BACK! It's great to see this place with a line out the door and jam packed with people. I will say they are still working the kinks out here and there but for the most part it is just as I remembered it...big portions, great shakes, great burgers. You can tell there are some new young employees that are figuring things out but try to be patient. This place gets busy FAST and it's tiny so it can't produce at the rate of a larger space. I've never met Ming, but I thank him. My kids are growing up loving this place like all the El Sob locals do! read more

Today is the re-opening of the Red Onion in El Sobrante. I heard via Nextdoor that it was going to open on Friday but because of the power outages, etc, they decided to make the opening today. Glad I was there for that! My friend tells me that this was a staple back in her high school days at De Anza. I ordered a cheeseburger, no onion and curly fries. The burger was a little too well done but not dry, still tasty. Nothing like that homemade taste, crispy fresh lettuce, tomatoe, pickle, and thousand island dressing instead of mayo. Curly fries were nice and crispy, definitely much better than jack in the box. Luckily I live nearby that I had my order to go, this is a very small place, only 8 stools at the counter and some outdoor seating. Lots of parking was a plus. The manager took my order and the owner was on the grill. They had a good amount of customers for a dinner time rush. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I love how most of the customers were so nostalgic of when it used to be open back in the day, they were happy to be able to help community business grow. read more
