It felt like an extra special treat with the recent COV restaurant closures...this place had just reopened. I'd call the Oyster Bar a "find", but many others found the Oyster Bar first! Hey, I sure do get the sentiment of other Yelpers not wanting you to know about this diamond, the Oyster Bar, but it is just too good to not write about! We came this past Saturday afternoon with brilliant sunshine splashing down over Puget Sound and the San Juans in the distance. Walking in, we felt we would need to have had a reservation, but one of the hosts said the deck was great and recommended it to us. We were led down two flights of stairs to the deck which has four tables. We occupied the last empty table here. Despite the temperature of no more than 60 degrees and no gas heaters nearby, that bright sunshine from the west created just the right amount of warmth. Music, at the perfect volume level and consisting of a blend of vocal standards and classical instrumentals was piped out on to the deck. That, combined with glasses of pinot gris, made for a rather romantic setting. Our server was amazing, just amazing. Bearing a resemblance to actress Shannon Dougherty, she was able to rattle off the specials perfectly and with full details....using that soft and soothing voice of hers. We ordered off the appetizer menu. Of course, with a name of Oyster Bar, they had quite the selection of oysters, both in quantity and style prepared. We opted for the baked oysters. So good, just so good. Served on the shell with a bit of cheese, bacon and spinach, they were just right! We also ordered the crab cakes. Oh...my...gosh. These are the best ever. Aside from the large and plump pieces of crab, the cakes were cooked to perfect doneness with just the lightest and most delicate hint of currry. The cakes came with a smudge of yummy aiello and two kinds of a fruity preserve/jelly. Oh, for "pre-appetizers" we had the asparagus soup and the salmon chowder. Asparagus soup came with a few small bits of asparagus tips, garlic and a shaving of a nice dry white cheese. Spot on! The salmon chowder was excellent. Though it contained lots of spices, they were masterfully added, creating just the right flavor, not overwhelming at all. We would have had dessert, but we were disgusting earlier in the afternoon and stopped at a DQ in Burlington for ice cream. Dinner was perfect at the Oyster Bar in all aspects, but as a great final touch, our server offered to take our picture with our camera. I'd end by saying that the Oyster Bar understands completely what makes a great dining experience and it shows. This place never dissapoints as they are always creating new ideas to grow. I ordered a dozen of the Smanish Bay raw oysters and they were the cleanest and less briny of the oyster choices and they were excellent. My customer wasn't sure about them but he ate half of them and loved it. Any novice would love these oysters as they are less briny or what I think is the flavor of seaweed. Loved the halibut dish as they know how to cook it on the barely done side and not overdone. The halibut melted as it was fresh and cooked perfectly. What a great find! We are trying to venture out of the Seattle area and this was amazing. Gorgeous deck and restaurant with great views of the Samish Bay. Oysters were so fresh and delicious. Everything we had was light and very tasty. Highly recommend the baked oysters and mushroom tart. They had a sturgeon dish as a special whole we were here...wow. So good. For dessert key lime tart was yum. Again light but so well done. They have a top notch wine list as well. Make a reservation though as there are not a ton of tables. After enjoying some sun and the beach, me and my friend decided to stop here for lunch. We had some wine and ordered the cauliflower soup, fresh halibut and chips and the mushroom gnocchi. We absolutely enjoyed our entrees. Soup was creamy and comforting. The fish was beautifully cooked and their house made sauce on the side was delicious as any. We took a spontaneous scenic drive from Seattle up to Bellingham on a perfectly rainy Pacific Northwest day. Stopped at The Oyster Bar for lunch. They weren't busy at the time we stopped by, and we were seated at a two top by the window and treated like royalty. The view was so beautiful, service amazing, and delicious lunch of halibut chowder, hot sourdough rolls (perfectly crusty outside and tender inside) with fanciest butter presentation ever and exceptional halibut & chips (sweet potato fries) served with housemade tartar sauce and garlic aoli. The Oyster Bar is a gem of a place. The view is unbelievable - and every table gets to enjoy it as they have a 'tiered' layout. You look right over Taylor Shellfish Farm and out into the islands. It does have an old school feel - which I'm generally not a huge fan of - but they really do it right here! Every entree is accompanied with a sorbet intermezzo and a luxurious cheese soufflé. The server told us that the soufflé is a tradition from the founders of the restaurant - many many decades ago. So instead of feeling old and tired, it has a historic tinge. I was concerned that the food would be bland or ordinary. I mean, after all, they could serve dominos pizza with that view and people would rave. But alas, their food had me floored. The oysters are served with an incredible mignonette made from apple cider vinegar. I seriously want the recipe!! I ordered the seafood stew as it was a chilly evening. But I wouldn't call this dish a stew. It was a wonderful mix of fresh fresh seafood and a light, herbaceous broth. Shrimp, scallops, fish, clams... yum. My husband had the salmon which he sadly inhaled before I got more than a tiny bite. It was killer. Strongly recommend reservations in summer or weekends. Came across this little hidden treat along Chuckanut Dr one Sunday afternoon while exploring the area. We stopped for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the experience. It seems a bit upscale and we felt a bit out of place in our jeans and sweatshirts, but they made us feel welcomed. We were sat at a table overlooking the water and saw a bald eagle swoop into the trees while we were waiting to order. We tried a sampler of the various local oysters which I enjoyed, but my husband is not a huge fan of oysters. My husband really enjoyed the Crab & Cheddar Melt (which I wish I had gotten myself) and I had the Fish Tacos which were good and were very fresh - but I enjoyed my husband's choice better. We both enjoyed the Crème Brulee for dessert. All in all a very nice place to happen upon on a Sunday Drive along a beautiful scenic road. A bit off the beaten path - but well worth the drive, if just to get out of town for awhile. The place has what looks like a lovely patio deck - not sure how handicap friendly the place is, as we had to go up and down steps to get in/out of the place which is literally built into the side of the mountain. We were there for cocktails/apps to check out for future dining and didnt realize there wasn't an actual bar. But we stayed to make the most of it. We considered ordering more and possibly changing our minds to have dinner, but our server's snarky attitude was too much! We dine out quite a bit and understand a bad day from time to time. I do not appreciate service based on pre judgement with how much $ I may spend or social status because of a fancy dress code. The only reason I'm dinging a star is for the dated decor. It feels a bit 1990s in there with so much carpeting. The plus side of the decor is it feels really cozy and nice for the holidays. A nice fireplace, wrapped garland and twinkle lights, it had a nice ambience. But it didn't feel like we were eating in such a fancy place. It's also a little strange to leave the restaurant to find the restroom, it's outside between the parking and the front door. We came in specifically for the oysters. Our server was so patient and friendly, accommodating and professional. He was a real gem and an asset to the staff, older gentleman dressed to the 9s, who knew a TON about oysters. When we said our favorite was the Shigokus, and asked where they were from, he gestured out the window, "Right over there, Samish Bay". This was a nice night out, with some excellent food! read more

Four of us had dinner in the late afternoon. To start with the setting couldn't be nicer. The restaurant is small but not crowded. Comfortable seating and a beautiful view of the sound. They did a good job concerning face coverings and protecting the seating areas with glass partitions that were not distracting. The service was excellent, everything was right on time but not rushed. I really like this restaurant! The views are magnificent. This cozy place, which overlooks the water, is nestled within the trees and sits right off Chuckanut Drive. The wines are great! The servers are fantastic but the chef is the star! We split an order of mussels. It had a pesto base. These were the most flavor-packed order of mussels I have ever found here in the PNW. I actually dipped my fresh baked bread into the juices. (I have never wanted to do that at any other restaurant!!) We each had a fig and endive salad with chèvre which was a treat to eat. My friend enjoyed the butternut squash ravioli and I ordered the braised short ribs. All the ingredients at this restaurant are fresh and the food is made from scratch. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the squash was flavorful. The short ribs were fork tender and well seasoned, melt in your mouth delicious. I had a Bordeaux and my friend had a Pinot which was a great addition to the meal. We finished by splitting a slice of lemon cake. Fresh lemon curd topped a moist flavorful layer cake along with a cream cheese frosting. The lemon was delightfully fresh. This sweet spot is busy and on this Tuesday afternoon, there were quite a few tables of people enjoying themselves. The servers are professional and pleasant! Pack your hiking boots as there are a few nice hiking areas near by, or drive a little further north and walk around Fairhaven! We will be back in July. We came back June 29 because we couldn't wait!! The place was busy. Soon reservations may be necessary. We started our meal with an aperitif. Both of us had a cup of asparagus soup. The soup was creamy and so incredibly good. Oh, just an FYI, the menu changes to accommodate the food of the season - always fresh, delicious food! So the items we ate in March were no longer available. I ordered crab cakes with sweet potato fries and my friend ordered the trout. The sweet potato fries were fried (actually I think they are baked) perfectly with a great crunch and packed with flavor. My crab cakes were filled with fresh Dungeness crab covered in a light crust. The fresh mango chutney was tasty. I was served fresh steamed zucchini and carrots on a bed of warm Bibb lettuce all of which was seasoned well. This chef is magnificent. Warm fresh bread made locally from The Bread Farm was delicious. My friends trout was cooked perfectly. The head was removed but the skin and tail remained. It was stuffed with vegetables. The fish was moist, tender and of course, seasoned well. We ordered half a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough 2017 (Kim Crawford) this is a bold, robust wine. I highly recommend this with seafood. It pairs well. We ended our meal with a slice of fresh key lime pie which we split. It had the perfect lime tart flavor. Her intimate knowledge of wines btg was correct and appropriate for our food choices. 18 mixed oysters were fresh and delicious with only a squeeze of lemon to brighten the flavors. Which was good as the frozen granitas mignonette lacked acidity. Nice idea though. Crab cakes w curry aioli & chutney were perfect. We had the cioppino, whose broth had a nice reduction quality to it, with a hint of saffron and heat to round it out. Its variety of seafood had to been individually cooked as each were tender and flavorful. The local truffle ravioli with a walnut and chanterell cream sauce was our other entree. 6 nice raviolis w a nest of mushrooms and greens. Delicious as well. Good coffee, a glass of Ximenez sherry, and a slice of Grand Marnier cheesecake completed our meal. Cheesecakes are popular on winter menus and this one did not disappoint. Update: The owner did reach out to apologize and correct this situation. I appreciate that and will give this place another shot in time. The view was great! But from the moment we walked in to the restaurant we felt unwanted and judged. It was very slow, only one other table had customers. The waiter(Michael) was less than warm and welcoming, we believe it's because we told him we only wanted drinks and appetizers, his attitude was entirely different to a family who joined at the end of our meal. The food was good. I give them that. Over our appetizer I could hear the waiter and the kitchen staff talking about one of their animals taking human size poops..not really what I expected from this place. To top it all off, we both came down with the stomach flu after eating here and have been sick for the past 4 days (this was the only meal we had in common). Really unpleased with this place, wish I had chose somewhere else to spend my birthday. I've worked in the food business and it takes a lot to get a complaint out of me, but you should really reconsider some of your staff if you are going to charge such high prices. read more

This place is a MUST stop! My boyfriend and I randomly stopped here on our way back to Seattle and it was one of the best decisions of our trip. The food is amazing the service is spectacular and the view, ohhhh the view is breathtaking! You literally are looking at the oyster farms you are getting your oysters from. We were lucky and were able to get in without a reservation but the place is small so definitely call ahead if your planning to go. This is a pretty fine dining place but Washington is full of accepting people so although we were in jeans we were treated no different. I will 100% be back to this place! Our waiter was less than service oriented. We still tipped slightly more than 20% on our tab - to send a gentle message that whatever is happening in your life, when you're in the service oriented business, don't bring it to the table with you. I ordered their Ling Cod special, and she their halibut fish and chips. I have to confess that the ling cod on basmati rice was more than just great. The flavor was worthy of being called beautiful. Perfectly and beautifully cooked. Thin slices of black truffles adorned the fish. What the chef did truly elevated the humble ling cod into greatness. Words fail to describe the flavor. I feel horrid only giving The Oyster Bar 1 star, but I wanted to grab your attention! I have always loved The Oyster Bar. I've been there many tims over the years. It's expensive, fantastic menu, and no kids under 9 y/o allowed, so the atmosphere is always professional and cozy. I haven't ordered fried oysters there for a year or so, and the way they "use" to pan fry the oysters was perfect - from presentation to taste. I would give them 10 stars if available & if they were still pan frying them. Last week My wife & I went there for a nice leisurely (and expensive) lunch. I ordered fried oysters. The excitement in waiting was fantastic. To make a long story short... The oysters are "now" being deep fried, not pan fried. Deep fried, just like any number of greasy spoon taverns do in the area. I was so disappointed. Sure, the panko was nice and crunchy, but it was overcooked - almost burnt. Frankly, they looked like they were prepared in a factory, not in their kitchen. I still love the place, but to put average deep fried tavern food on their menu of fine dining cuisine is a crime. The Oyster Bar is a unique place, from it's out of the way location, to being perched on the side of a cliff, to the views of the water and San Juan Islands, to their unique decor and to their 5 star menu... but to add deep fried tavern food to their exquisite menu could be the first step in making the place a "regular joint to eat". I hope not, but I fear so. There are plenty of taverns to go eat pre-breaded deep fried oysters (from SYSCO, or Cash & Carry)... but there is only one Oyster Bar. Hopefully management will read this and go back to their old way of pan frying their lovely oysters. The oysters I was served cheapened the place, and The Oyster Bar is not a cheap place. This place is in a lovely location with a great View. We ordered the bouillabaisse and I would give it a 10 for seafood and a one for the broth. If you're going to make for your best and you're going to call it for you best then you better get the aioli and the garlic flavor. The broth tasted like dishwater! I also sampled the Halibut chowder and the broth was equally bad. I wouldn't recommend this place about two miles up the road as a Fisherman's bar with seafood and I would suggest going there. read more
