First time here and I was more than pleased. The atmosphere is very intimate and comfortable . My date and I were immediately greeted by our waitress (Sherry) to take our drink order and to tell us about the specials . She was very informative and great with suggestions . I'm slightly indecisive but she was so patient and wonderful . After she took our order there was a shift change and we were helped by Lisa . Both ladies were absolutely phenomenal . We had the crab stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer . For an entree I had the chicken oscar & my date had the ribeye steak . Both with salads to start . Yum! I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 because I did not like the dessert we ordered, honey granola ice cream. Also, it took a long time to get bread. I was hungry and the bread came when the salads and soup were served. I got the 6 ounce filet. Tender, juicy, cooked perfectly. The restaurant is really cute and has a charm to it. Yum! I was out in Milwaukee for a business trip and the guy from our Milwaukee office recommended this place saying it had the best ribs. A bunch of us went for dinner on a Thursday night (during Milwaukee's WORST rainstorm in 100 years or something - this was the storm that closed down the airport and caused a sinkhole in the middle of the city). Anyway, I didn't order the ribs, but a few other people did and I tried some and they were fantastic. The sauce was tangy and sweet and smoky and perfect and the ribs were really tender. You barely needed to poke them to make them fall off the bone. I ordered the queen-sized filet mignon because I didn't think the petite would do it for me, and I didn't want to get greedy with the king (because someone else had already said he was going to treat us all to this dinner). The steak was really tender and delicious. It came with a salad and a side, which weren't v. memorable. The bread that came for the table was really good though. It seemed like it was baked fresh and brought to our table; it was really soft and chewy and warm. Just as an aside, our waitress was a little odd. She was v. friendly and nice, but she referred to everyone as "young lady" or "young man," even though there was a gentleman in our party who was in his 70s. (And to note, our server was in her late 30s/ early 40s at most). There's a full bar (with plenty of beers on tap) as well as a pretty extensive wine list, so you can definitely bring a date here for a fancy dinner. My husband and I have visited this restaurant before, because of the great reviews we've seen on Yelp. Well, let me tell you, this is a great place be! The ambiance is great for everyone. The front of the restaurant has a bar and a spot for a live band and the sitting area in the back is very eloquent; white tablecloths, dimly lite with candles on each table. The staff here is fantasti! We were there last night for my husband's birthday and we received the royal treatment. Our waitress was very attentive to the time we needed to leave in order to make it to our Broadway Play at the Rep Theater. Our table was a little wobble and she immediately has it fixed in seconds. She knew the foods on the menu and gave us great recommendations. I had the veal and mushrooms with linguine and my husband had barbecue ribs with mashed potatoes. Everything here is phenomenal!!! The manager stopped by our table to check in on us and even complimented us on how nicely we were dressed for the evening. It's so rare to get acknowledged by EVERY staff member ( that crosses your path) when you enter a restaurant but that is what you will get when you visit The Packing House Restaurant. Omg, the food here was delicious. Our meal began with a tasty, fresh green salad and deliciously warm, fresh bread. It was so good that we ate one whole loaf and asked for one to take home. My husband had the roasted duck which came with masked potatoes, mixed veggies, apple stuffing, and cranberry sauce. The duck was moist with crispy delicious skin. Yum! I had the scallops with mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies. It was cooked just right and was too tasty. I had enough to eat that night and for dinner the next day. My mother in law had the haddock Oscar, which came with lump crabmeat, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. Her meal was so delicious that even though she was full, she couldn't stop picking at it. My husband and mother in law had drinks as well and they even brought out an ice cream sundae for her birthday. All of it was only 80+ dollars which was more than reasonable. First time there. Well worth the trip. Started the meal with their Escargot. Main course Prime Rib, a Porterhouse Steak, Butter Mash potatoes. Both Prime Rib and Porterhouse were delicious, great flavor. Could cut the Prime Rib with a butter knife. Desserts were Banana Cream Pie and Tiramisu. Everything is homemade. Service was excellent! The first time I came here was 1989. This was the place to go for dinner before prom. Let's just say this place has not changed much since then. The building and interior could use a little bit of updating. The mold in the bathroom is no good. The drive-through is great for Friday night fish fry pick up. It makes it very fast and easy to get your food. Speaking of food, this place makes decent food and good steaks. The service is always good, sometimes bordering on too much. They have awesome live music 3-4 nights a week. I think that is my favorite thing about the Packing House, the live music. I personally would not come here for a date (not romantic enough for me). We had a 5:00 PM reservation on a Thursday. When we arrived, there was one table with two people seated at it having a very loud business meeting. The tall blonde hostess (?) attempted to seat us directly next to them. I asked if we could please sit somewhere else so that we were not part of their business meeting during our evening meal. Since these were the ONLY other people in the restaurant, I did not think this request would be such a problem. Apparently, asking to be moved to a different table is extremely offensive to the Packing House hostess (?). We were unceremoniously ushered to the opposite side of the restaurant to a table in the darkest corner of the room. So dark, in fact, that my 88 year old dinner guest literally could not read his menu. I asked if the lights above our table could be turned up. We were told "Sorry, no." We put our jackets back on and left. Not one employee asked us why we were leaving. On the way out I gave my gift card, (yes, this meal was a gift from a colleague of mine and a regular customer at this restaurant), to a gentleman at the bar who looked like he could go through the gift card quite quickly. "Cheers" to you, my friend. After I got home, I called and spoke with "Joan" who said that this particular hostess (?) is a "great employee, and even more than that." Joan was very sincere when she asked me to try the restaurant again, and that there would even be a gift card waiting for me should I choose to return. (Thank you for that offer, too.) I declined. I would never spend ANY of my hard-earned money at a business that thinks that treating customers the way their hostess (?) treated us is acceptable. It is beyond me that any restaurant owner would think that shoving patrons into a dark corner, and being verbally sarcastic to them, could possibly be good for business. read more

When you first walk in The Packing House it can be a bit off putting in a lounge lizard sort of way. Their bar area is definitely a throw back to that era including lounge singers/acts and the remaining odor of the bygone days of inside smoking. Do not let this put you off!!! When you get to the dining area the ambiance changes dramatically. Nice dining area, quiet and a bit classy. Not tie and jacket classy, but very nice. Whenever I stay near the airport this is where I head for dinner. I have yet to have a bad meal or experience here. The service is overall very good, the menu has a good variety of food and while a bit pricey you get what you pay for. The Roast Duck is very good - not greasy or dry, but cooked very well and you literally get half a bird. The Chicken Marsala has an excellent sauce and is flavorful. The only dish I was so/so on was the Chicken Cordon Bleu - it is wrapped in a puff pastry which was doughy and did not compliment the dish. While I have not tried it, the Prime Rib looks amazing! The meals include soup or salad with home made salad dressings, bread and the usual side choices - mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, baked potato etc... I have also found the vegetable sides included are hit or miss. The last visit we had fresh green beans which were served with overcooked carrots. In previous visits it has been frozen peas and carrots - one of the few disappointing things. They also have a decent wine list and make a mean Old Fashioned. The Prime Rib is probably the best I've ever had and I've had a lot of prime rib. Melt in your mouth tender throughout. Not oversalted. Absolutely incredible. The quality of the steak justified the high price. I was considering veganism but I will stick with being a reducetarian. I would skip the occasional burger or chicken at lower quality establishments to save up for one juicy steak here. It was nice to have an old fashioned dining experience complete with relish tray and warm bread and butter. Potato and soup or salad was included and the mushroom soup was bursting with flavor, probably made from meat drippings. I sampled my mom's brandy old fashioned and whoever named it best in town was telling the truth! Atmosphere is fancy complete with coat check room. I cringe to see how dressed down everyone was, even a guy wearing a ball cap inside, but that's the times and I wouldn't want this restaurant to lose business enforcing a dress code that nobody seems to care about these days. This restaurant is the worst steakhouse I have wasted my money. There were flies everywhere and the older staff seemed incompetent and relied solely on the SA's. The younger SA's were amazing but the older female SA's did nothing and ordered the kids around. As well as the managers/hosts were rude and did a horrible job hiding their displeasure about being there for the night. I have heard so many complaints about specific servers from this establishment. Absolutely ridiculous. I will make sure my blog knows that it's not worth the risk with the amount of bugs and how dirty the bathrooms were. I saw not a single female SA in the 2 1/2 hours my party was there go into the bathroom to make sure the bathroom was in decent condition but my party said the men's bathroom was fine. I really hope to see some changes with how the staff treats their bussers and help staff. read more

I had a wonderful business lunch here earlier this week. It reminded of an old school supper club. Initially, I was turned off by the smell of smoke, but the food was fabulous. I had the daily salad special, mixed green topped with grilled chicken, candied walnuts, goat cheese, strawberries, and tomatoes. The dressing was light and great. We went for the Friday Fish Fry, and it was pretty good. The restaurant has a supper club feel to it, although it is hard to get to the dining room with two infants in car seats. It also isn't very clear where the host's station is to be seated, but those don't effect the quality of the food. Three of us got the fish fry, and the fish and potatoes (two ordered pancakes, one fries) were above average for Wisconsin Fish Fry. The cole slaw was so-so. I could have done without it. The meal started with chowder, it that was quite good. One note, they do drive thru, and the line was quite long. However, if you just want take home fish fry, I would near by Puddle Jumpers instead. we went to have a friday nite fish fry as written up in the paper and were absolutely disgusted. we ordered the regular fish fry and it looked and tasted as if it had been prepared for drive thru and there were no more drive thru so they had it under heat lamps for a while and served it to us. It was dried out and the potato pancakes were equally dried out and I was so very disappointed in the poor quality. The fact they would even serve that is beyond belief for a restaurant who normally has a good back ground. The hostess sat us at the kitchen and bathroom opening and since there were many tables availalbe I asked if we could be seated somewhere else and she said well we are expecting a full house tonite. Order consisted of Ribeye Walleye Manhattan I wanted to take my girlfriend on a date but it had to be a new place so I decided to roll the dice and ended up breaking even, meaning the meal was very anticlimactic. The food was okay, the ambiance was dated, overall very average. My girlfriend order the ribeye which was fine, it was seasoned less than a good amount but still had good flavor. The walleye was superbly underwhelming. I've been venturing more into fish as oppose to red meat lately (but my girlfriend loves steak so I usually get to enjoy the best of both worlds), and it usually pays off very well but this time I was kinda let down by it, although flakey, was kinda bland. I also got a manhattan with my fish, because some how they were out of negroni materials, and it was on par with the manhattan I've had at similar style places. Overpriced and lacked flavor. The Packing House isn't really a place I see myself going back to for anything more than maybe onion ring thingys and mozzarella sticks while I enjoy the live music. Went here for thanksgiving dinner with the hubby. We travel a lot for his job and don't normally make it home to the east coast for the holidays so we're always looking for a nice restaurant with good quality portions without destroying our wallet on the holidays. The food was delicious and more than enough but also came with soup and amazing bread! And by the way only 24.99 per person UNBEATABLE in Milwaukee. I wish I could remember our waitress' name because she was soooo sweet attentive and personable. The restaurant itself is nice dim lighting and a respectable crowd. My husband and I decided to visit this place this pass weekend after reading all the great reviews on Yelp,. Well let me tell you, we were pleasantly surprised. When you first walk in the restaurant there is a small intimate bar and a small band was setting up. We proceeded to the the right (towards the back) and was greeted by the owner) The restaurant was dimly lite, very romantic. Each table was covered with white linen tablecloth and candles. I ordered the Cobb dinner (excellent) the fish was fresh, very light and not overly fried. I'm not a big coleslaw person but this coleslaw was very good. I also choose the potatoes pancakes and they were very good as well. My husband had a slab of ribs. The ribs were glazed with an incredible HOMEMADE barbecue sauce. The meat was so tender the meat fell off the bones. I am not kidding you guys with that last statement. I should have taken a picture of his pile of clean bones. Oh yeah, we forgot to mention the salad. Normally salads are just that, salad and essential for the body. This salad was outstanding! the dressing (balsamic vinaigrette) my hubby had the french dressing. Both of the dressings were home made. Talk about delicious, man oh man was that dressing good!!! We mentioned to the hostess (who we later found out was the owner) it was our first time visiting the restaurant and she welcomed us, and invited us back.
