I needed a quick, healthy lunch one day this week, so I popped in here on my lunch break. It's counter service, but the food came out FAST! I ordered the French Goat Cheese sandwich with a side of the Baked Sweet Potato Pieces. The sandwich was delicious!! Truthfully, I was a little skeptical about it at first because it has fig spread, however I found the overall combination to be quite delightful. The sweet potato pieces weren't as crispy as I expected, however dipping them into the house mayo that they come with was the perfect flavorful combo that I needed! Also, I want to point out that I don't have a huge appetite, so the sandwich + sweet potatoes ended up lasting me for TWO meals! I ate the second half of it the next day and it was still good. Really nice spot for a quick healthy lunch near Bryant Park! I was looking for a place to get take out so that I could eat it outside and this was exactly what I was hoping to find. Just 3 blocks from the park, quick service, varied menu. The restaurant itself is tiny but does have some small tables and counter seating. They have a very nice variety of sandwiches (regular and hot pressed), as well as salads. I ordered a Mediterranean salad with an addition of their crunchy tuna and avocado. This was amazing! The lettuce was so fresh, and it had plenty of healthy and delicious toppings like toasted almonds, roasted red peppers, chickpeas, eggplant, hard boiled egg-- honestly it was probably filling enough on its own without anything else. However, I do think the crunchy tuna brought it up a notch and added a nice serving of protein. Their tuna is so creamy and fresh, it has a lot of texture and flavors from the diced pickles and corn. The avocado was perfect and added more creaminess! It comes with a half pita which was fluffy and flavorful. It also comes with a side of tahini if you want to dress the salad and complement the Mediterranean spices in it. This was an incredibly filling lunch and pretty fairly priced compared to other places in the area. The quality of the food and service were also top notch! Used to be one of my go to spots years ago when my job was nearby. Recently moved closer again and I'm glad the food is still the same taste and quality. The Mediterranean turkey I always get on a pita which is perfectly chewy and feels so healthy and clean. There is hummus and Mediterranean pickles on this one - so good. I don't have to get wet, hot, snowed on, or even change my shoes! If the ease alone doesn't have you convinced to let the Picnic Basket save your lunch hour, I'm happy to report, their food is really, really good, too! I've had several of their daily soups. The cream of mushroom and chicken & vegetable chili are faves. I also love the crunchy tuna salad on ciabatta. Their hummus is also a hidden gem on the menu. I came by for lunch on a Friday around 11am. I've passed by this place countless times but never had the opportunity to give it a try. Until today. I got the pastrami sandwich and asked for mustard instead of mayo (just because I don't like mayo). It was nicely toasted on ciabatta and the cheese was melty and gooey. I also appreciated that the ingredients were evenly distributed throughout the sandwich so each bite was proportionally complete. Not sure if the gnawing hunger played a part, but this sandwich hit the spot for me. Simple with just lean pastrami (that's how I like it.. too fatty grossed me out), pickled red onion, pickled jalapeño, cheese, dipped in mustard. Great little lunch. I must also add: great service. There were two girls manning the counter and both greeted me cheerily. When I stood there staring at the menu trying to decide what I wanted, they didn't stare at me or make me feel awkward and rushed, as often happens in nyc when you don't know what you want. Lucky for me it wasn't busy, but still, I appreciated it. Also, they greeted every single person that walked through the door with a bright and friendly greeting.
