I really do thoroughly enjoy living so close to this cafe. It's a small cute and charming little hole in the wall in Tudor Cuty which is a hole in the wall of a neighborhood equally as charming and tiny. I gotta say it's almost like all the flavors of history collide here and the food is fantastic. If you're ordering third party though, I highly suggest you call to make sure they have certain things. There's definitely been a few miscommunications, stock issues, and flops in the past when I grab food from them but it's always so goooood. Cute little hidden gem in Tudor City Place! I read the reviews and wanted to give it a try for lunch and am happy it did. The menu is bigger than you'd think for a small place like this so it took a moment for me to decide-there were a lot of things I wanted to try and there were also a few daily specials! I went with the spinach pastilla which was fresh, tasty and filling. It's kind of like a spinach pie on a tortilla instead of crust. I also had the Moroccan mint iced tea. The service was quick and there's a little space to sit outside and eat. I've lived in NYC for so long and still wouldn't have known about this wonderful cafe if I hadn't been in the neighborhood. Very unassumingly tucked behind scaffolding of beautiful residential Tudor City buildings behind charming spring blooming gardens is this most comforting neighborhood gem. Its small size and casual coffee stop vibe belie the delightfully high quality food that Chef Yassine makes for the lunch crowd. We loved the convivial atmosphere with neighborhood regulars stopping in for a chat with Yassine and their late morning coffee and fresh scone or breakfast sandwich, while we dined at the lone indoor table (due to covid)--there are outdoor tables as well-- on delicious, authentic, homemade Chicken Tagine with succulently tender vegetables and brothy couscous and a very flavorful Shepherd's Pie. Moroccan tagines that I've had in the South of France are a favorite food of mine, and I haven't found many in the city that hit the spot and feel so authentic as Yassine's (Algerian) one. Given that he makes all kinds of other really yummy looking lunchtime sandwiches and soups that during covid you just order from the podium up front, you really wouldn't know (except for the sidewalk sign that attracted us) that there are also elaborate, time consuming entrees that feel both like eating at your favorite neighbor's home in the best way possible and like eating out at a high quality restaurant at the same time. Made with love and all delicious. You wouldn't also know that the place is a purveyor of freshly baked pies like chicken pot pie and freshly baked breads, in addition to the house brand hot sauce that he makes and bottles, which is delicious! The spicier one is our favorite, like a cross between harissa and Korean gochujang chili paste--such flavorful depth with a nice piquant kick. He was so nice to give us samples to take home and try. We came in just looking for coffee because that's all the shop looks like and were so delighted to just keep discovering more and more to love. But in addition to the peaceful location on the square (it felt like an oasis of midtown), the neighborhood local community vibe, and the excellent food quality and variety, there is Yassine's genuine, welcoming, and congenial personality. He treats every customer like a friend (even first timers like us), shows that he really cares about quality and treating people well, and is just a joy to be around. It was such a lovely experience we wanted to move to the neighborhood immediately. We are envious of all the locals that get to frequent the cafe daily (there are so many yummy looking things on the menu it seems like you could really go daily), but we plan to go as often as we can! I love how you can always discover new parts of the city--he's been there for 20 years! This small hole-in-the-wall Moroccan spot is tucked into a dead end in Tudor City right by Tudor City Greens and right by *that* overpass on Tudor City Pl and 42nd Ave where all the influencers and Instagrammers of New York take their photos (you know the one). I implore you all to try this place out after indulging in your little photoshoot by the overpass, pick up some food to-go, and enjoy a delicious Moroccan meal in the park. Yassine, the culinary genius and smiling face behind Tudor Cafe, was so friendly and welcoming - he's the type of person who makes you feel like you've known each other forever. When I asked if I could get a tiny bit of the harissa sauce and manager's sauce to go along with my meal, he gave me a whole mini jar of the harissa! He said that jar should last me a solid 2-3 weeks but y'all, this sauce was so good I'm already halfway through the jar and it's only been a couple of hours... As for the food, I've only tried the Moroccan Tagine but it was hearty, reasonably seasoned, and incredibly delicious. The portions are huge so you will definitely have leftovers to enjoy and reminisce over later. I cant't say enough about this place. The most delicious home made food and the homiest place I have ever been to in Manhattan. I live in the neighborhood and walked by and didn't think anything of the place until trying one of the dishes -- and have been addicted ever since. The owner and his partner put their entire soul into preparing the meals and make you feel so warm and welcome. Missing the main item. I ordered a breakfast egg wrap, a croissant and a coffee but I didn't receive the breakfast egg wrap. It puzzles me how they could miss the main item from this order. The 3.5 stars is mostly for the excellent customer service. I went in for the grilled halloumi sandwich and didn't realize that they gave me a chicken sandwich until I got back to work. I called them and they sent someone over to my office with the correct sandwich, a cookie, and an apology. I thought that was great customer service. My halloumi sandwich wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't the best that I've had. So far, The Picnic Basket on 50th makes my favorite version! These are well-intentioned people, with some good tasting food. But it's important to note that the place is an old wreck, that is worn-out, greasy and somewhat unclean even for a small takeout cafe -my gf thinks it's gross. Closing the place down for one day, cleaning it out, shining it up, painting it and getting rid of the grease would go a long way, if only to inspire some confidence cthat the food is clean and properly handled. WIth that said, I still buy there occasionally. I really like to baklavah I've bought there -not too gooey with honey, a common problem I find that ruins the filo dough and destroys the taste. So that's a winner! But today I tried their lamb pastilla. Never in my life have I been sold a sandwich with as much hot (lamb) fat and oil. Tasted great, But, honestly, the oil kept dripping through a dozen napkins. Easily an ounce of grease in the sandwich, (and on my hands, pants, etc.) I want authentic cuisine. But I do believe this same good taste could be purveyed after draining some of the grease. So, I wish them the best. I hope they may see this review. And I hope they may literally clean up, paint and drain the fat from their act -just a bit. read more

I have been meaning to try this place ever since I found it on Yelp, since it's close to the UN and has high reviews. I found myself walking in yesterday and feeling very underwhelmed. However, I decided to give it a chance. I wanted to order the 1/2 soup, 1/2 sandwich because I wanted both. However, they are no longer offering that. Instead, I ordered both a soup and a sandwich. I got the soup of the day and the spicy sandwich. They were amazing. Both were tasty and full of flavour, and I have no regrets. I spent $13.40 in total--it was a lunch that was pretty cheap for New York, and I even had some of my leftovers for dinner! This is a place where I will definitely go back to visit. I'm torn because I'd like to try all the other items on the menu, but the spicy sandwich was so good that I'm craving it right now. A fair warning though: there is a $10 minimum on using cards, so just be aware of that when you go. read more

If you're looking for an unpretentious little place with delicious food and friendly service, look no further. We have an apartment nearby and take many of our meals from Tudor Cafe. We especially crave the fresh croissants from Balthazar in the morning, turkey/ avocado and halloumi sandwiches for lunch and Moroccan chicken in a clay pot for dinner. I want to love this small, neighborhood business but they are severely lacking in customer service and basic communication. I ordered 2 breakfast wraps at 8:45 and I could tell the guy was annoyed to take my order when he said "it'll be 10 mins, I have to go to the basement for spinach." I said "ok!" and I came back 10 mins later. He tells me "still not ready" and I said "ok! I'll sit out here and wait." 9:20, I check on the food again and he tells me "I've been busy, so I only made one." In the meantime, he had been taking other customer orders, making and delivering their breakfast, and just leaving me sitting and sitting. I was like "ok... how much longer?" And he tells me "I don't know," just basically refusing to make my second wrap... I ask him to cancel it all and he's frustrated I don't want the one he did make... I'm baffled... I'm supposed to go somewhere else to get breakfast for the other person I ordered for? I ended up asking him what he can make quickly and he tells me he can make egg and cheese on a croissant in 3 mins. A fun feast of exotic tastes. Finally made it here after meaning to check out their baklava for at least a year. I'll just get it out of the way - the baklava was right up there with the best I've ever had. I can't actually remember a time or place where I had a piece that checked every box like this. Baklava is somewhere up in my top three favorite sweets, along with flan, and Haci Bekir Turkish Delight, so basically I try it every opportunity I see it anywhere, including trying my hand at making my own. Well, I can stop ever making my own again, the pursuit for perfection is over. The crispy slightly roasty flavor of the phylo layers, the multi layered nuanced sweetness (I ate it too fast to really pause to figure out what might have been contributing to those flavors), and the just right (to me) ratio of nuts distributed through those layers - I am so glad I have found this! One tip, the big triangle is the one to get. The smaller mini-squares with pistachio are so different I wonder if they were even made by the same person, I did not even finish the ones I had, I don't recommend them. Other than that, the chicken tagine with cous cous was a tasty and fulfilling lunch, and a ground lamb in flat bread sandwich-type of thing was a scrumptious dinner later - the lamb had none of that gamey lamby taste that I feared, it was delicious. I also enjoyed trying their home-made harissa, which was fun but after a few bites I couldn't eat until I let me tongue revive, so you have to be ready for that. Yum yum yum - is all I have to say. This place is in the oldest high rise building in NYC apparently. So it has a flare of old fashioned and hole in the wall. I love this place. It's the perfect next door neighbor cafe where you can be friends with your chef - like in the movies! Yassine is great, the couscous is so delicious, and the vibe is very home-y. AND if you're a hot sauce lover, *insert drooling face emoji* the harissa red pepper hot sauce that Yassine makes is legendary! Literally, after I had that hot sauce, I use it on everything. It's a cozy cafe in the head of a lovely Tudor City. The place is run by two co-owners from Norther Africa, and you can enjoy the taste of that area. They are open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon coffee. The menu includes croissant from a popular bakery, Berthazar, sandwiches, salads and main dishes. They also have various kinds of drinks. Hands down my favorite little cafe in NYC. The "gourmet" in the title isn't a lie- the chef here used to work for some five star hotel overseas. For lunch, the sandwiches are amazing, the turkey avocado especially. The ingredients are as fresh as the bread, and almost everything there is made in house. Their other options are Amazing as well. Their chicken tikka over Rice is incredible, especially when had with a dash of Harissa, a brand of North African pepper sauce. This is primarily a sandwich shop, but they do also have some basic breakfast pastries, coffee, some prepared foods and dessert. Their chocolate chip cookies are delicious-soft and gooey! As for the sandwiches, I personally love the turkey avocado. They use a special mayonnaise, which gives it a nice added flavor and the baguette is always nice and crunchy.
