They also do a Sunday brunch for $9.99 with eggs, sausage, biscuits/gravy and pastries. There is a Yelp check-in coupon for $1 off a whole pie. They were none too happy about offering this deal and insisted someone went renegade and started this Yelp and that it's not them... Just as vivacious at 71 as she was when she opened The Pie Factory in Largo nearly 20 years ago, Bobbie Barmore is passionate about sharing her love for key lime pie. She walks behind the counter, pulls out a freshly prepared pie and places a slice on a plate. "See the pale yellow color? That is true key lime pie," Barmore explained. "Real key lime pie is not green. The green color you see in some key lime pies is from food coloring. You will never find a green key lime pie in our shop." Today, The Pie Factory makes an average of 1,500 to 2,000 pies a week that are sold via retail, wholesale and online. There are 35 types of pies on the menu, but key lime is still Barmore's favorite. Her fondness for the sweet delicacy is understandable. Key lime pie spurred the venture that evolved into The Pie Factory and the Toucan Coffee House Café, which is a dine-in restaurant located inside of the pie shop. The pie shop and the café evoke a Key West-themed décor, highlighted by toucan murals and images of the Florida Keys on tables and walls. It was a vacation to Key West in 1990 that hatched Barmore's foray into the pie business that she started with her partner, Marvin Pugh. "I had never heard of key lime pie until I moved to Florida, and my I didn't like my first slice, which was green and tart," Barmore said. "Then, during a trip to Key West, I tried another slice, and this one was delicious." Barmore was so enamored with that piece of pie that she talked to the creator, Buddy Rodriguez of Florida Key's Finest Key Lime Pie. The pie is derived from a secret recipe passed down from four generations. The key ingredient is lime juice, made from limes shipped in weekly from the West Indies. The pies are made with a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream. "He (Rodriguez) said he had distributors across Florida, but he didn't have a presence in Tampa Bay," Barmore said. "Not long after that I was in the pie business." Barmore opened a small commercial kitchen to make the key lime pies and market them to restaurants and grocery stores. It took three months to land her first client, and some restaurants were hesitant to give her a chance. "The owner of one restaurant (The Pub in Indian Shores) doubted that we would last long just specializing in key lime pies," Barmore said with a smile. "He said that, if we were in business nine months later, he would buy from us. We were still around, and they are one of our oldest clients." The Pie Factory is a haven for enthusiasts of pies, cakes and cookies. A table in the center of the café, typically used for guests dining on handmade quiches and southern BBQ, is covered with holiday dessert trays with cookies, brownies and petit fours among other sweets. Glass display cases showcase Christmas cookies in shapes of Santas, Christmas trees, bells, stockings and gingerbread men. Other cases feature the myriad of homemade pies and cakes that attract regulars and newcomers from around the Tampa Bay area. Created by Pugh, The Pie Factory's Chocolate Thunder Cake features three types of Belgian chocolate with a chocolate fudge filling. It is a chocoholic's fantasy. "Carrot cake was our biggest selling cake until we introduced the chocolate thunder," Pugh said. "Now the carrot cake is our second most popular cake." The Pie Factory's pies and cakes are larger and heavier than what is typically found in grocery stores. Pugh says they use high-end ingredients and make pie and cake by hand. "We looked into automation, but we have seen other places turn from homemade to automation and their quality has suffered," Pugh said. "We make 1,500 to 2,000 pies a week, and every one is homemade." The Pie Factory's pies and cakes do not have fillers, Barmore added. "Look at this apple pie," Barmore says, pulling out a freshly made slice. "The types you buy in the grocery store are filled with gelatin. All you see here are apples." Customers appreciate the homemade desserts with genuine ingredients, Barmore said, and they are willing to pay $9-$17 for a pie or cake at The Pie Factory because of the taste. The Pie Factory's apple pie is 10 inches around and weighs three pounds. The caramel nut apple pie is another favorite. It is made with large chunks of apples, sugar, butter, cinnamon in a flaky pastry crust covered with warm caramel and roasted walnut. Two years ago, Pugh and Barmore debuted the All-American Apple Pie, which includes pieces of their apple, apple razberry, apple caramel nut and cinnamon apple pies. Other "Sampler Pies" are the Southern Sampler (apple, cherry, peach and blueberry) and Toucan's Sampler (key lime, peanut butter fudge swirl and Oreo bash). The Pie Factory has built a loyal following of customers who are regulars. There are snowbirds, Barmore says, who make their shop the first stop after they arrive in town from the airport. read more

All of them are sensational, but among the fruit pies, the apple and peach are my favorites. Both the New York style cheesecake and the Boston cream pie are the real deal, and the peanut butter swirl pie is delicious. With the holidays approaching, I must recommend their specialties, pumpkin pecan praline pie and sweet potato pecan praline pie. 4.5 stars... You had me at pie. Sadly they aren't open in the evenings so I had to make a return trip to catch them while they're open. They have other pastries and some savory lunches but who's kidding, I came for pie. They have a great variety of pies and any slice is only $3.50. I got three slices to go, a key lime (of which they claim theirs is the best), a blueberry, and a pumpkin mousse. All three were incredible and I really can't criticize anything about them. My dinner guest brought an apple pie and a key lime pie. The apple pie looked, and tasted, like a pie that someone had slaved all afternoon in the kitchen making it. Went to the five factory today with my wife for Sunday breakfast. They had a breakfast buffet for 1099 each person are you Kinney including coffee and juice. They had a lot of good items scrambled eggs bacon sausage links and pattie tator tots pancakes waffles sausage gravy and biscuits then danish scones fruit salad warm cobbler juice coffee and tea. All these items were fabulous and home-made you can't go wrong. They have all kinds of pies and cookies and cakes there are fabulous. You can also go online to get a discount coupon. After a long and tedious search of Tampa and St. Pete, I was able to find a Pie shop. If you want a dozen options and aren't too worried about what they look like or that it may not all be home made, then this may be the place for you. Upon walking in you will notice the décor is dated. I walked to the counter and was greeted and proceeded to scope the display and menu. I knew from Yelp what people recommended so I ordered key lime and French silk and was charged for water. We chose to sit out on the patio that evening and seated at a very used table and chairs. The table was rocking but we made due. The Key Lime didn't do much for the aesthetic vote. It looked gelatinous, wiggly and much like it came from a can. With one bite, I had no desire to have any more. For being the best, it sure was sub par in my opinion. The filling did taste straight out of a can and I was extremely disappointed. The French silk had a little better look and tasted marginally better. It was sweet and seemed to be on a hard possibly home made crust. I sadly won't go back because it was a long drive for me and was quite mediocre for me. However, if you do like pie it is worth a stop and try. The price isn't too bad, but for me I've had some really good "home made like" pie, so I'm a bit cynical. read more

I love pie, especially strawberry rhubarb but I've def had better... I feel awful because the lady at the counter was extremely nice but the pies were pricey and not good... We ordered the key lime pie and the strawberry rhubarb pie and both of the pies were not the best... The key lime tasted liked mascarpone cheese with a hint of lime and the strawberry rhubarb's crust was not flacky and the rhubarb was very fibrous... On 9-5-15 was my families 4 time to your establishment. I live in Lakeland & my family lives in Clearwater. Your products are of high quality & flavor. However, the woman owner & older woman working the counter are rude, impolite & have no sense of how to handle or please a customer. Both need to be replaced with interacting with customers because they are both sour pusses, have no patience, make improper statements to customers & cause customers to feel as though they are bothering both of them. For my money, I'd like to be treated with some form of respect, not spoken down to & feel as though I'm a value to your business and NOT a bother. All 4 times visiting your establishment their reactions were the same. We were not greeted, any questions were responded with a huff, we all were questioned why we were buying what we selected (like it was any of their business considering each time my purchase was between $45 & $89.00). This is no way to run a business. I will not be treated this way again because none of my family of 6 will be returning even though we love your pies & cakes. If anyone cares to speak with me, please do not hesitate to call me. I will be more than happy to give you my opinions directly. My husband and I stopped in during our last night in the area. We were craving a piece of Key Lime pie and we weren't leaving Florida without it. So we decided to give this spot a try. And we were glad we did. Upon entering, we saw all the other pies lined up in their cases and we couldn't turn them away. In addition to the Key Lime, we ordered slices of coconut cream and French silk with two hot coffees. Our intent was to take our treats back to our hotel, nibbling away at them throughout the night. But we didn't make it out of the parking lot before we devoured all three slices like complete hogs. They were excellent. The people who worked there were friendly and the atmosphere reminded us of a place where the Golden Girls might have gone to get their cheesecake. The hubby and I thought this would be a good place to get a slice of key lime pie before we left Florida. The name gave us high hopes that they would have fantastic pie. We were tricked. The pie was just O.K. We had a slice of key lime and a slice of bourbon pecan. Both of the pies had weird crusts. The key lime had a graham cracker crust, but it didn't taste like graham crackers at all. The bourbon pecan pie's crust was a traditional pastry crust, but it was way too thick, dense, and hard, not light and flaky at all. We also tried ordering a hot tea, but it never arrived. When paying the bill, they tried charging us for a tea we never received. Then the waitress tried making excuses for why it never came. It was a bizarre conversation. My recommendation is to skip this place and head down the street to Frida's instead. read more

Just to make my decision harder, Mary offered me a sample of their famous Key Lime pie--smooooth and delicious. But since my 2 favorite foods are chocolate and peanuts, I opted for the Peanuttier Peanut Butter--has a layer of chocolate on top and chopped up peanut butter cups over that!! I frantically searched Yelp for pie places about a week before Christmas. I totally forgot to order a pie for Christmas Eve and I'm new to Tampa so I was totally lost. I mainly chose this place because of their name and their different pie flavors. I got a classic pecan pie, and a fun salted caramel apple pie. I ordered over the phone and a very nice lady helped me chose the pies. When I went to pick them up on New Year's Eve day, it was pretty hectic in there, there were tons of people trying to get pies and trees didn't seem to be much order in the pick up process. The pies were seriously GORGEOUS. I mean the most photogenic pies I have ever seen. Especially the Apple one. On Christmas Eve, I served the pies and they were such a hit! Every single bite of both pies was polished off, I don't even know which was our favorite, I wish I got one more pie because we seriously demolished them. Do not go here for anything but the pie! And if you do come, take it to go. We saw relatively good reviews for this place so we figured we'd give it a try. Our first issue, the menu... I'd seen chicken pot pies on their online menu, so I figured I'd give that a try only to find that it was scratched off the crumpled up 8 1/2" x 11" printed plain paper menus. How much does it cost to reprint a few menus if you are going to take something off the menu? Secondly, my kids wanted a jumbo hotdog on the menu, but the lady at the register stated they don't have jumbo anymore, just small hotdogs. I pointed out that the chalk menu behind her was still listing jumbo hot dogs. To which she replied, "I know." After deliberating awhile, I decided on a Shepherd's Pie which the lady at the register stated "It's really good." My wife decided to get a Quiche with a side salad, and my kids got a hot dog. Then the lady that took our order went around the corner to their "Kitchen" and I hear what sounds to be microwave. Sure enough, the food comes to the table, everything on plastic styrene and EVERYTHING has been microwaved! The Shepherd's Pie had some wonderful hot spots hot enough to burn your mouth along with cold spots. The egg in the Quiche was rubbery, and salad was warm. And what restaurant microwaves hotdogs? Thinking we may have just made a bad choice in ordering food and their claim to fame is their deserts, I ordered a Lemon Meringue, my wife ordered a Chocolate Silk pie, and we ordered cookies for the kids. Again, sub-par. The cookies were terrible, tasted like cardboard and food die, my lemon meringue wasn't bad, but most I've had have been better. I know I will be back to this place in the near future, still smh wondering how I haven't been there before. When you walk up to the door you find plenty of seating inside and out, the tunes are cranking, all is clean and decor has a front porch vibe. They have a small "small bites" menu and grand selection of pies, cakes, cookies, coffees and other liquid treats. I enjoyed the sheperds pie off the small bites menu, it wasn't small in size, served piping hot and the taste was delicious. Before I left I took a slice of coconut creme pie too, that I look forward to enjoying later. The ppl working there were very friendly and welcoming to my large dog that sat outside with me while I ate. Yes I felt a little judged equivalent to the typical looks I get from the older crowd because of my hair cut but the owner quickly warmed up to me and we had great small talk.
