I have to give one star because they answered the phone, nothing more. I attempted to order four pies "to order". The woman who answered, I don't believe she was the owner from what I remember, asked me about ten different ways "you want it warm?" I repeatedly said, " I want it freshly cooked....hot" and if they had time to make them on a Sunday. The people I was giving it to are elderly and want only a freshly cooked pie. Couldn't get an answer and was asked "Don't they have an oven?". I have been to the pie shop many times and although the quality has fallen, I still enjoy it. What a terribly snobby and rude attitude whomever answered the phone here had. We simply asked if they did curbside, since we have a high-risk cancer family member and we can't enter any store during this pandemic. The person who answered said "NO, NO" in a rude way as if we had asked for their first born child and seemed incredibly offended. There was zero need for the attitude when a simple polite answer would have sufficed. Most businesses who care about keeping their customers and employees safe are doing curbside since there is less risk of exposure, especially during Delta. Get with the program. And if not don't be jerks about answering a simple question. We would have done crazy business here in the future given I am British both year round and for holidays but they just lost a customer. read more

All of their pies are excellent, but if I were to rank it based on my taste, here's the list: 1) KEY LIME PIE - my favourite. The tartness of the lime balances the creaminess of the filling. This one doesnt have the upper crust. The bottom is a graham cracker crust. The filling is peppered with LOTS of lime zest. 2) DOUBLE CRUST RASPBERRY-BLACKBERRY-APPLE PIE - If you like fruity and tart flavor, this is a good one. it has the same great crust as the apple pie. 3) DOUBLE CRUST APPLE PIE - generous portions of apple slices. Not too sweet. Sugar crusted, doughy crust tasted fresh and crisp. Would be excellent eaten with a dollop of light whipped cream. 4) CHOCOLATE MOUSSE PIE - If you are a chocoholic, this one's for you. It has a graham cracker crust. I thought the flavour was good but I thought this is a little monotonous after eating 1/4 of my slice. 5) COCONUT CUSTARD PIE - It is a surprisingly light pie. Sprinkled with toasted coconut flakes. 6) BANOFFEE - banana, caramel, whipped cream. It's a great combination, but I'm not a caramel person. Say what? I don't think one has been living a fulfilled life without having stepped foot into a store that is dedicated to PIE. Walking in to this small #Montclair shop, your gaze goes straight to the pastry case filled with pies: custard pies, curry pies, shepherd pies, blue cheese pies, a damn Thanksgiving stuffing pie. My mind was blown. I already had The Pie Store in mind after tasting them at a Yelp event in Jersey City a few years back. I've been waiting 2 years to have a reason to buy dessert in Montclair and what a wait it was worth. I called ahead and had a really great exchange with Steve placing my order. They were ready and waiting for me when I arrived. I ordered up the chocolate mousse and the blackberry, raspberry apple combo. Now, not gonna lie, I did a little gulp at $24 a pie. Day-um. But upon carrying out my pies to the car, they weighed close to 20 lbs. When I brought them to the Superbowl party and opened them up, there were literally gasps. These were damn near the prettiest and thickest pies this far northeast of the Mississippi. Each large dessert pie easily feeds 8 people, they are deliciously dense and just about as rich as a pie gets. The chocolate mousse pie was more of a ginormous truffle in pie form. If you are a chocolate lover this should probably be on your bucket list. The fruit pie was almost too beautiful to eat, but after 3 minutes of staring at it, we dove in. Buttery and perfect, I loved the trifecta of fruit making each bite a perfect blend of a little bitter but oh so buttery sweet. Third time lucky making it to this store which keeps idiosyncratic hours. I bought a meat pastie and a sweet potato blue cheese one, along with a sausage roll. The pasties were bigger than I'm used to - the ones I've had inspired by England's coastal towns tend to be smaller and fit more comfortably in your hand - but given we're in the US, maybe it's a nod to local portion sizes. The meat pastie and sausage roll didn't really excite me, but the sweet potato and blue cheese was a nice surprise - a great flavor combo. I can say I've ticked it off my list. Moist, flaky and delicious crusts stuffed with flavorful fillings like chana masala, steak and mushroom and chicken curry. Large and small sizes are available which gives you the option to share different fillings and styles. They also have a decent offering of imported English condiments, snacks and beverages. Got there a few minutes before opening and there's already a line waiting to get in. That's a good sign. The ten of us piled in when the doors open and... the place is so small that we filled it up and now no one can really walk around to check out all the imported goodies. I wasn't there five minutes and dropped $50 without blinking an eye but my bag weighs over ten pounds so I was confident I made out in the barter. The deets for what it's worth: Shepherd's Pie (I can still remember watching a Gordon Ramsey show where he went ballistic on a chef when the poor sap called his dish Shepherd's Pie instead of Cottage Pie cause he used ground beef. I was surprised that this place isn't afraid of "The Wrath of Ramsey" by doing the same) -- mighty delicious with a great ratio of mashed potatoes to meat and (not enough) veggies in an flavorful gravy. Steak, Ale & Mushroom Pie - the most expensive item and a whole lotta food but by far my least favorite item. The hunks of steak weren't that tender and the the majority of the pieces were way too large (and I have a big mouth). The pastry itself was flaky and delicious but this one was a swing and a miss. Apple Blackberry Raspberry - the fruit (mostly apple, a few blackberries, I never found/tasted a raspberry) was soft and thankfully a bit tart and not overly sweet. The pastry once again was the star of the show. Bonus purchase: Irn-Bru! I'm not even a fan of soda but this reminds me of being a teen and who can say 'no' to carbonated bubble gum?! (Everything I got had instructions to reheat at 350-degrees for 15-30 minutes but on all three pies that was never enough. But perhaps that was my oven's fault.) We were thrilled to see there was an English Pie Shop when we first started looking for a house in Montclair. Didn't end up picking that area but happened to be passing by over the weekend and thought we would stop in for some homemade goodies. Picked up a few bits and had them tonight for dinner. Was excited to see a good old fashioned sausage roll but was a bit disappointed when we cut into it and found that it was just that, sausage in casing in pastry. My wife is British and we lived in London for many years before moving back to the states and we've never had a roll like that. The best part was the pastry. Not sure if it was homemade but very good. Next up was the Cornish pasty! Looks impressive but fell flat as soon as we cut it open. It was loaded with ground beef and a few chunks of carrot and potato. Lacked any taste at all. Cornish pasty should be beef chunks not mince. For a Madras "soccer" pie which was the saving grace for the meal. It may be American Madras but it is certainly not English Madras hot. Probably won't be making a trip there anytime soon. I'll just go back to making my own proper sausage rolls and Cornish pasties once the renovations of the kitchen are done. read more

Ladies and gentlemen you can't imagine the rapture in store just inside of this door! There, you'll sample The Pie Store's meat pies - savoury and sweet pies, as you'll see. For you who eat pies, The Pie Store's meat pies conjure up the treat pies used to be! Fortunately, there is no barbershop upstairs, so what I ate was probably actually beef. And cheddar, in a delicious, savoury sauce, in a fresh pasty. I went home and reheated it, as directed, for 15 minutes at 350, and it got super flaky and perfect. It really did bring me back to the food I've eaten overseas. I finished off with a small key lime dessert, just to confirm that I would want a large pie thereof. I would want a large pie thereof. It's uniquely done with cream cheese, making it a very heavy, almost custardy key lime instead of the light pies known in the USA. It's full of lime and you get it frozen. I let it thaw for awhile at room temperature and it was still a little crystalline, so you should probably give it 2-3 hours in the fridge for it to come up to temperature more slowly. I would want more pies, but these are very dear not just in my affection for their taste, but also in price. A large pie is over $30! And while I'm sure I could get 2 meals out of a large pie - and most people would get 3-4 - that's fairly pricy in the scheme of things. It's going to limit how often I'm able to make it. Finally, this place does not just sell pies. They have a variety of other prepared dishes, and then some shelves of imported British goods. You've got your mustards, your custards, your bustards... err, anyway, a wide selection of tasty treats you can't find elsewhere. They have the lime jam I used to enjoy! Definitely 5 stars for the foods I've had so far, not too keen on the price, but I'll be back to try some other foods and get a definitive rating on all the offerings. read more

After watching Harry Potter, my kiddo wanted to try pasties. We found this place through Yelp and ventured out to find this little store packed with British treats and the most amazing pasties. We got the Shepherd's Pie, Cornish Pasty, Steak and Cheddar, BBQ Pork and Cheddar, Chana Masala, Lamb, Chicken Madras Soccer Pie, and Sausage rolls. Everything was excellent, but our two favorites were the BBQ Pork and Chana Masala. Honestly, you can't go wrong with stuffing anything into that amazing, sturdy, flaky pastry crust. The one drawback was that they were all cold... like slightly freezing cold. This would've been fine normally, but I mistakenly planned us arriving around meal time and I was planning on eating one right away. Rookie mistake. It's possible that they also serve them warm or at least room temperature, but it was poor planning on my part. If you have such aspirations of eating them right away, you should call and check. Anyway, I still give them 5 stars because it was that good when we warmed them up in the oven at home. We also got the banoffee pie and key lime pie. These were too sweet for my liking and the crust was very thick and hard....not tough....just hard to break because they were so thick. But the flavors are legit and worth a try. read more

Visited here for the first time today. I had heard good things about the food here and it was really good. I bought a variety of pasties and a shepherds pie. So far I had the BBQ pastie. Crust was flaky and buttery. Pork was tasty and juicy. Can't wait to try the other pasties for dinner. I will be ordering from here again in a couple of weeks when I have family over for dinner. Really want to give them two and a half stars. Purchased two different pies. One was excellent one was very disappointing. Their Key Lime pie is phenomenal! It's as good as you'll ever get even down in Key West! Great crust with a nice tart filling and whipped cream. Absolutely no complaints about this perfect pie. The problem was the Raspberry-Blackberry Apple pie. It's about 90% apples! It's really just "flavored" with the berries. It still tasted just fine but I was expecting a lot more berries for the $16 they charge for a Small pie! I'd definitely go back for the Key Lime pie in a NY minute however. My bank account is not happy I discovered this place. The man friend came home after work one day and brought home some savory pies as a surprise. He got the chicken madras soccer pie, the BBQ pork and cheddar cheese pastie, and two sharp cheddar scones. When they box it for you they indicate how to reheat the pies since they store it in the fridge at the shop. My favorite from that group is definitely the chicken madras pie. Perfect blend of Indian spices and filled with meat and potatoes. Also, that flaky, buttery, delicious crust. Goodness, if I wouldn't gain five pounds eating this every day...I would. The pulled pork and sharp cheddar pastie was flavorful as well but a little too tangy for my taste. The casing however, like the pot pie, is pure perfection and I could eat that without anything in it. The sharp cheddar scones were delicious and cheesy and when you toast them it's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Came back again not less than a week later to get a mini key lime pie, a small apple raspberry blackberry pie, a lemon scone and a chocolate chip scone. The key lime pie is best when semi frozen. It's almost like an ice cream pie! So tart, soft, not too sweet, with a thick and yummy bottom crust. The lemon scone was deliciously citrusy and soft and airy. The chocolate chip scone was filled with chocolate chips and also soft in consistency with a crunchy outside. Brought the Apple blackberry and raspberry pie to a friend's place a day after we bought it and popped that sucker in the oven. The lattice work is exceptional, and need I say absolutely freaking delicious. I don't wanna lie, it made that pie. The filling was abundant with fruits too and not too much filling, which I thoroughly enjoy because I can lie to myself and say it was filled with fruit and therefore healthy. In summation: Everything here is just so.good. I can't wait to try more. Docking one star for price because this isn't something I can eat on a regularly basis. Went here today to pick up a cornish pastry for dinner. The weather was about 30 degrees and already there was a line to enter (due to COVID - only one customer can come in since the shop is small). Understandable but when you are waiting for about 10 - 15 minutes outside in the freezing weather it gets to be too much. Suggestion: Have people only stay in for 5 minutes tops inside and people who preorder food from their online menu should be able to pick up their orders in The Tea Store up the block since it is empty most of the time and they are from the same owner. Another thing: I don't care for the snippy attitude I get from the women behind the counter. I get the vibe they're prejudiced since I am not a white person. I've been to other British food shops in NYC and they are super courteous. You need to work on that aspect of your business. read more

So, ever since I studied abroad in England, I cannot get the thought of banoffee pie out of my head. I talk about it non stop with any British person I meet. I beg my colleagues in our UK office to ship me some. Now, no more need to do that! My friend went nuts trying to find a local shop that makes banoffee pie and boy, did he deliver!!! He said the owners of the shop are super nice and also, from across the pond so you get genuine banoffee pie here. When I bit into it, I was transported back to Cambridge. I love it so much. I still crave it all the time. Just note that you should call ahead of time to reserve one because they do sell out of them! I'm very glad I don't live closer to the pie store, otherwise I would be here ALL THE TIME! They have a great selection of both savory and sweet pies. For their savory pies, I've tried their steak ale and mushroom pie, steak and cheese pasty and their chana masala pasty (chickpea). I wasn't as big of a fan of the steak and cheese pasty and liked the chana masala so much more. It was flavorful and not at all bland which the steak and cheese one was to me. As for the sweet pies, the larger pies are double crusted and the smaller ones only have a top crust. If you are a crust person like I am, I would definitely recommend the larger pies because i like that extra layer. The place is on the pricey side where a small pie with the top crust is $12+ and the large double crusts are nearly $30. But if you do want a delicious treat, I would say order the double crust pie. The pie store also has a lot of British imports of candy, soda, groceries, and chips. I was just in there for Easter and they had a ton of Easter Cadbury eggs. For Christmas, all of their holiday chocolate packages were available. They have a pretty decent selection and i'm glad I have a go to place if I'm craving Maltesers. read more

Not that I needed a special occasion to get me to The Pie Store, but for my first time here (4/25/15), it was to get my dad an edible birthday surprise! Arrived around 10:30am on a Saturday morning and got lucky with the last street parking spot available. (Parking is not so abundant on this windy street) Got even luckier because usually you need to preorder the Banoffee pie, but the owner was there and had everything needed to make one on the spot for me in about 15 minutes!! THANK YOU!!! With those 15 minutes I made my way through all the UK sweets, snacks, beverages, and condiments they offered, and back to the case at the counter holding all their delicious pies. Savory selections will have to wait for my next trip though! - I got my eyes on Lamb & Feta, Chicken Tikka, and Shepherd's Pies! I ended up leaving with the small size Key Lime Pie, a large Banoffee, some post-Easter discounted chocolates, and several bags of UK chips. Next time I'll definitely try their savory pies and preorder a chocolate mousse pie! Sooooo what did we think of these pies? My dad thought the Banoffee was too sweet for his liking, but the bf and I both loved it! There were enough slices of banana to even out the sweetness from the gooey toffee. The only gripe is how messy it was to serve up. It was super hard to cut into while keeping all the layers together, so serving it to guests was difficult and ended up being a pile of banoffee on a plate! As for the Key Lime Pie...I was confused. There was a tag on the box with heating instructions (the Banoffee Pie didn't have this). I would've hoped and expected for one of the staff members to tell me about heating this pie prior to leaving the shop if it needed to be heated. But I knew this pie generally doesn't need to be!! It was an easy mistake as they must have just placed it in the wrong box! Unfortunately for the inexperienced pie consumer, one may actually heat the pie up regardless because there were instructions to do so. Sending this gentle note/warning out to The Pie Store to double check their boxes. As for taste, it was creamy and limey tart. Really enjoyed it, but won't make it on my "best I've ever had" list. Love the pie store! I have ordered a few pies for family parties over the past year. The apple pie is amazing. It's not too sweet or too gooey in the center so you really get the apple flavor. There are several layers of sliced apples stacked. The mince pie was one of my favorites at Christmas time. The Pie store made it traditional with raisins and citrus flavors. It was nice and fresh. Pre ordering is recommended for the holidays so plan ahead. While in the store be sure to check out the candy selection. This place is insane. INSANE. Probably the best meat pies I've ever had, and that's coming off of a stint of living in England for a year. Had this place bookmarked for a while and was very happy to finally have a chance to stop by. This was a great way to end my afternoon in Montclair. The shop is cute but very little room to move around in. They were also selling little nick nails like chocolate bars and weird relishes. We came in mid afternoon and there were still many different types of hearty and dessert pies. I was upset that we just had brunch and were full otherwise I would have bought a lot more. Me and the boy ended up getting dessert pies. One chocolate mousse and one key lime pie and they were overall delicious on top of more deliciousness. I would highly recommend this place if your in the mood for some fresh homemade dessert pie. Just to nitpick and explain why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. The pies were delicious but the key lime pie was a little watery and the chocolate mousse was a little too rich and buttery. The weird whipped cream was too heavy for an already sweat pie. The big thing though was the cleanliness. Overall nothing looked dirty but the whole bakery/kitchen was open and visible to the public so the unwashed bowls and unclean counters were just slightly unappetizing. The one "friend" standing around in the middle of the kitchen with his winter jacket still on leaning on the counters didn't help. Really great savory pies. Steak and ale is my favorite. The other ones are good, but steak and ale has the perfect balance of meat and... not meat. The other ones have too much potato filling for my tastes, but still superb. Also tried the small egg custard pastry - very sweet but texture was super light and fluffy, which was perfect. I had to visit The Pie Store again after previously experiencing such pastry bliss. What made the decision easier was that Mother's Day was coming up, and I needed to get a dessert for the occasion. Scanning the menu I can't believe I forgot about the Banoffee Pie! Tip...order the Banoffee pie ahead of time as it's one of their signature pies and I'm told whenever they do have it in stock it sells right away, so I called one day ahead and placed my order for pickup. I arrived to pickup my order and tried to resist keeping my cravings to just the Banoffee but right by the cashier were several decadent and sinful looking scones beckoning me to purchase them. The extra sharp Cheddar cheese scone was tempting me the most as I was in the mood for something savory, plus the scone was humongous! It was delicious savory goodness as the Cheddar was sharp and formed a nice crispy outer scone shell. Texture inside was perfect scone buttery biscuit like. Banoffee PIE, Banoffee PIE, Banoffee Pie! So good I have to say it three times. As some have mentioned in previous reviews some parts of the pie are sweet (the toffee part) but in my opinion that's expected......it is toffee. Luckily the toffee sweetness was kept in check by the other components of the pie like the fresh bananas, dark chocolate shavings, cream, and graham cracker crust. Speaking about the graham cracker crust it was really awesome with the earthy grainy graham crackers giving a nice solid pie base. Another excellent food experience! read more
