This place is great if you have kids. I don't, so I find it overpriced to watch hoards of children run around. So my 3 star review doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not for me. This weekend my family and I visited in hopes of purchasing the Breakfast Brunch Buffet. In the last year our family of 4-8 people join Sunday mornings to enjoying the brunch. Sadly, we learned that the Brunch is no longer offered. We were told that the restaurant was not getting enough patrons requiring a lot of food being discarded. I hate for that to happen to any restaurant. I appreciated the manager coming over to everyone's table to ask how the food was and if there were any issues. Although we're sad there is no longer a brunch I would like to give feedback for a better menu. The new menu items were not the best tasting but we understand the kitchen may be working on improving. One option I think would be great would be to bring back the Waffle and Omelette station. Those items were always a hit and with them being made to order this can help on food not being discarded. Although brisket was offered it was part of an omelette or an egg grilled cheese. Since brisket is offered throughout lunch and dinner times I was thinking maybe something like a brisket-egg-potato plate. read more

What a gem! Came today for the Sunday brunch and what a treat! Primarily a bar with indoor picnic seating inside. Outdoor sports another bar, with a large play scape for the kids. More picnic tables and some smaller tables around. Food truck sits in the back and opens after the brunch closes at 2. No kiddos after 9 at night. So, the buffet....just about any southern classic breakfast item you can imagine. Biscuits, sausage, pancakes, blueberry sausage, eggs, bacon, black eye peas, collard greens, fried catfish, fried chicken, cheesy grits, brisket, blueberry cobbler, etc etc. Everything is outstanding. Delicious well priced mimosas and bloody Mary's. Since there are instruction signs on what to do when you walk in, here's a hint. As you enter the doors, head to the left to the end of the bar to grab your disposable plate and your choice of beverage. I came for Sunday brunch and was so impressed with the selection and quality of the food. The buffet had so much to choose from. Eggs, potatoes, fried catfish, fried chicken, grits, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy and lots of delicious brisket to choose from. There was an omelette/waffle station and coffee, oj, and tea are included in the $22 buffet price. I really appreciated the attentive staff that was constantly refilling all items quickly. Everything was so fresh and yummy. My biggest regret is that I couldn't go back for a second plate. There was a band playing during brunch that we really enjoyed as well. This is an amazing brunch! After seeing so many good reviews about this place for brunch I was finally able to come here with some out of town friends and my husband. Everyone loved it! (That includes my husband who doesn't love brunch the way that I do.) The bbq (brisket and pulled pork) was definitely the unanimous favorites by everyone. My first round, I took a little of everything that looked good to me to try a bite of each. My favorites that I got a bigger portion of on round 2 was the pulled pork, brisket, bacon, mac and cheese and biscuit/gravy (the fresh biscuits had just come out). Even saying that, everything else I had round 1 was good (sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, fried catfish). I'd say for first timers, if you want to try something and it's low, just wait for your 2nd time through the line. They are constantly replenishing the food. When I have dreams of brunch (doesn't everyone?!) Pigpen is what I'm thinking of. You can't get more southern and down-home than this! This is definitely one of those "cheat meals" that will stick to your bones for the rest of the day. Definitely come hungry! I have only been here for brunch, so that's all I can comment on. When we go, we try to arrive as close to 10 as possible, so we can get the seating of our choice. They always have live music during brunch which is great, but it can make it challenging to hold a conversation inside bc it's not very large in there and the music gets loud. I realize I could sit outside, but I'm pale and don't like to sweat. The set-up is what it is. The containers on the serving line can be a little tricky to lift the lids and serve yourself food, and it's hard to keep food really hot in those. But with that being said, I have really enjoyed most of the foods I have tried. Some of my faves are the catfish, brisket, biscuits and gravy, Mac and cheese, and I love that it includes coffee, juices, and dessert. They even have several options for vegetarians if you have some in your group, like scrambled eggs, hash browns, and pancakes. This spot is great for a group brunch because they have some long, beautiful wooden tables inside. If you don't like sitting with random people, then bring a bunch of friends and chow down together. I have heard great things about the AYCE brunch menu but have only visited during on weekdays. If the weather's nice, snag a seat at the outdoor bar and watch a game. THE dish to get here is the Brisket Grilled Cheese. Lordy, it is good. The gooey cheese, the Texas toast, and meat in every bite. I love that this isn't drowning in barbecue sauce, which has marred other versions I've had elsewhere. Go big and side this with their lightly-battered onion rings, or fries if you're boring. Why have I not been here earlier? This place is GREAT! The menu isn't big but that doesn't matter. Everything was delicious. You go up, order and pay at the bar and then pick where you wanna sit. Friendly staff and bartender. And the food came fast as well. I had the Brisket grilled cheese and was blown away. It was so so good! Generous amount of juicy, tender, flavorful brisket exploding between the two slices of cheese. Really crispy bread. What a perfect grilled cheese sandwich! The dip trio was really good as well - good gaucamole and qeuso for sure. My friend who got the bloody mary says it was really really good as well. So overall, definitely going back. I just wasn't able to make it as I had a lot on my plate all week hosting several other events, so sleeping in on Sun to rest my C-TBI brain was top priority for my health. So on to our experience... We walked in and didn't know what to do, no one to greet us. Awkward. All kinds of signs with specials, etc... but not one saying "See the Bartender". Finally he got our attention and we dropped off our CC for a tab. I knew I wanted a Bloody Mary as they looked so good but I was not in the mood to drink, it was early, and I just wanted to eat! I wanted to sit outside since another little cool front blew in this Sun morning. Also because the band was kind of too loud. So I went to check it out and there was hip hop playing loudly then noticed the kid's playground. Nope, to kids running and screaming around me while listening to hip hop. Lesser of two evils was seating inside. The band was good so two thumbs up for them! *Note* Get there early 10-11 am or you won't have a choice where you wish to sit. By 11:30, there was a long line to check in at the bar and at the buffet. For returning rounds to buffet, pick up a new plate from the bartender, as there is no servers. The buffet has all my favorites: Bacon, eggs, biscuits, gravy, hashbrowns, sausage, pancakes, grits, mac-n-cheese, greens, black eyed peas, fried chicken & fish, pulled pork, brisket, two choice of fruit cobbler, fresh fruit (watermelon), coffee, two choice of juice (OJ & Cranberry). Hits: Eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, pulled pork, greens (great flavor!). These I easily get other places, including at home... sad face... Misses: Fried chicken (tasted weird, ewww) and the breading just wasn't impressive (same with fish), cobbler (strange consistency), juice selection (I prefer pineapple but apple would have been ok as well. I guess OJ & Cranberry are bar juices so that's what they offer. I can't drink OJ so my only choice was Cranberry), biscuits were huge and looked great but too stiff for my liking with no flavor. The frozen margaritas are a bit too sweet. They do have a brunch buffet on sundays. Live music at times. Parking is a bit limited on site so you have to park across the streets or in the neighborhood. Felt that the bar was a little understaffed - took a while to get our order even though we were sitting at the bar and even though it wasn't very busy. Ok, first of all I would have never guessed this place would have turned into what it has. It is nestled back behind the smoke shack off broadway in the Alamo heights area. It's a little neighborhood bar that has a pretty interesting souther brunch on sundays. All of their food is catered by the smoke shake and it looks like that have some pretty awesome drinks to pair. You walk in and buy your plate (buffet at $16 per person) and I'm sure you can take it from there. They have a very southern variety of foods such as collard creams, pinto beans, biscuits and gravy and grits. They also have pancakes, eggs, bacon, brisket Mac n cheese and sausage. But not just any sausage, they have a link STUFFED WITH BLUEBERRY PRESERVES. It was very good and I loved how unique it was. The service was really great and friendly and really just had a great small community vibe to it. Definitely a local hit spot. I would probably return. The price is high but the food really was good. The quantity is a bit overwhelming, but I suppose it matches the price. The brisket grilled cheese was okay, a little over salted. The fries were like grease sponges that seemed like they had been sitting out for awhile and then flash fried them again. There was very little potato and a whole lot of grease. As we ate with friends outside in the backyard we enjoyed a picnic-style setting with tables and chairs, picnic benches shaded by umbrellas and large trees. There's a playground and wooden playhouse that children could enjoy. Inside there was a country western music live band playing on stage. I'm in Texas! For fans of Texas-style barbeque, this is a worthy stop! If you want to go out on a Sunday Brunch and you're not familiar with the Texas Liquor Laws one of them prohibits bars and restaurant selling alcohol before noon on Sundays. Bars serving alcohol between 10am and noon on Sundays are required to serve food with drinks. This was something I learned about Texas that day when a few of our friends wanted to get some drinks prior to eating. Located in front of Witte Museum, my friend and I hopped across the street on a Sunday for a quick bite before the jazz show. We were originally headed to the Smoke Shack, but was directed to the Pigpen for brunch. The indoor area was relatively small, made seemingly big by the long picnic tables that stretch across the room. The outdoor area was rad with a kid area, food truck, and tons of seating. A majority of patrons were gathered around the bar where the Spurs were playing the Warriors. Some were smoking and all were rooting for the Spurs. We surreptitiously cheered for the Warriors. The brisket on the Bloody Mary is super awesome! I loved the Michelata. The spice they use on the rim is off the wall. I am also a huge fan of their Brisket grilled cheese, which is something considering I don't typically care for meat. Their fries are seasoned slightly sweet, which I enjoy. The tacos were large and filled with stuff so I left feeling full. I also got an IPA and that was solid too. Experience: I went on a Friday around early evening and it wasn't too busy. They have an outdoor space that has a playground and the food truck (where the food comes from) and an inside space with lots of tables and benches. I have always loved The Smoke Shack. So after my friend invited me to The Pig Pen I was curious about what, if any, differences there would be with the food. One huge plus is that your clothes don't smell like a smoked brisket when you leave. Here you order your food at the bar and are called when the food is ready. If a band is not playing on stage then they have sports playing on the projector. The pretzel was so warm and amazing. The brisket nachos were piled high and did not disappoint. I love this place. So glad it opened up kind of in my neighborhood. Smoke Shack you hit a home run with this new neighborhood bar. There is a full service bar both inside and outside. Inside there is a stage for live music. First of all there is the food. Featuring delicious Smoke Shack brisket. I love both the burger and the brisket nachos. There is the nice variety of beers on tap. And the Bloody Mary is wow. A nice spicy bite and garnished with a piece of brisket, wedge of lime and an olive.
