Ambiance, food and service was great. Kids loved the play area. Prices are great and reasonable. And their drinks were yummy.

My husband and I arrived at The Pigpen around 11am on a Sunday after church to try out their brunch. We decided we would go ahead and get the buffet. This location is a bar so when you walk in don't let that throw you off. It's super clean. When you arrive, you'll want to head to the bar to check in and if you're getting the buffet they will provide you with a plate. The inside was pretty full at this point but they provide multiple picnic style tables for open seating. There was also live music playing which might be a bit loud for general conversation. The buffet offered a wide array of food options from biscuits and gravy, to breakfast tacos, bbq and even some Mac n' cheese. They do have a full bar so you can snag that oh-so-important mimosa (or carafe for a group) or other beverage of your choice. The buffet comes with juice and coffee. We decided to enjoy the weather outside before it got too hot. The outside does offer more bar seating, plenty of different tables with a good amount of shade and there is even a playground for young children. The outside area is also pup friendly if you don't want to leave your furry friends at home. Alright on to the food and drinks. As we did get the buffet, my husband and I tried a sample of the different options. Everything was pretty good. I will say I found the biscuits to be a bit overworked and had uncooked flour in it because of this. The bacon was crispy - love! The sausage had great flavor - offered in patty and link form. The BBQ is from the Smoke Shack next door and is legit! The brisket came apart easily with a fork and the house sauce added a nice little zing. Being that it was brunch I got my standard mimosa. They were not shy with the champagne in this drink which I appreciated. My husband also tried their frozen Moscow mule. He said it was great and super refreshing on a warm day. We loved our experience at The Pigpen and I imagine we'll be back soon. read more

So I see a pattern now: on some visits the Bloody Marys are awesome, other times they are no bueno. I was there two days ago and the Bloody Marys were delicious, service was great, and the food was just ok. I've been craving Bloody Marys since having them at Pigpen just two days ago. I stopped by again today after work and should have known it would be downhill when my Bloody Mary was handed to me looking more the color of brownish orange juice. To add insult to injury, the bartender said there was no brisket available to garnish my drink but she could get me some if I really wanted it if I was willing to wait a few minutes. She delivered a hot piece of brisket which was an improvement over the cold slices usually served with the Bloody Marys so it was worth the wait. Service was great but it was so disappointing that my drink was not good. I wouldn't have even known it was a Bloody Mary if it had just randomly been handed to me. I hope they become more consistent now that they have recently reopened after the pandemic. read more

My Husband and I went to The Pigpen this past weekend for a good ol' Sunday Brunch! And man was it delish. 16 bucks a pop for ALL you can eat, southern brunch. My FAV was the Mac n Cheese. I *heart* this place. Drinks (happy hour!!) tastes great, good beer variety (by the looks), brisket nachos are YUM! (I would give another star if I found more food choices that I liked) I'm hooked on the Frozen Arnold Palmer and when the frozen lemonade was out last night, I tried the Michelada with Modelo...YUMMMM Good place for a gathering with fellow adults and those that need to bring kiddos along (until 9pm be at least). The brisket nachos were fantastic. They were NOT stingy on the brisket either which is something I was concerned about initially but was surprised after I saw the plate. I'll definitely be back for the nachos! Update: I went back today again, this time unaccompanied, so I could have the brisket nachos all to myself. I'm a pretty big guy, but I couldn't finish it. It's definitely meant to be shared between at least two people. Also, the portion of brisket put on the nachos was just as much, if not more than last time. The Pigpen is a great little bar behind the Smoke Shack (one of my faves). It calls itself a "neighborhood bar" and the atmosphere suggests just that. When you walk in, there is a bar and a few picnic tables in front of a stage. Make your way to the back, and you'll find the outdoor bar, more tables, play area, and the food truck. The several times I've been, there has been a wide range of people from families enjoying time off after work to a high school basketball team celebrating the end of their season. You really do feel like you're in someone's backyard when you step into the Pigpen. The food is served from a food truck but it's not your typical food truck experience. You can order from the bar and someone will bring the food out to you. Thank god because I typically hate the awkward waiting to hear someone holler out your name/order. The pretzel is soft and warm and comes with 3 different dipping sauces. We also ordered wings, which were great! What enticed me to go back to the Pigpen was the soul food style brunch buffet. As a lover of "all-you-can-eat" anything, this was a perfect option for me. There is a decent variety of meat (brisket, catfish bites, chicken tenders), bread (biscuits and tortillas), and fruits to enjoy. There was also brisket mac n cheese on the buffet line. The PigPen is a hidden gem on broadway! I was finally able to make it to their Sunday brunch buffet and WOW. I was not disappointed. Such a huge variety for their buffet. I hate the hassle of going to a breakfast place and having to wait 30 minutes to sit down, order, and wait for food. This makes everything easy just get a plate and begin your own personal Man vs Food challenge. Solid food, but foodtruck-slow service. Dropped into The Pigpen at a Monday noon start due to the Smoke Shack's being closed for a Food Network shoot. No worries, as The Pigpen still offered the transcendental brisket grilled cheese. Unfortunately, it's only life-changing if you can get the sandwich before your lunch hour is up. Brisket grilled cheese was surprisingly light for a sandwich made of meat, cheese, and an unhealthy helping of fried butter. The bread gave way with a light crunch, and the cheese must have been detuned/desalted as to not overpower the soft, juicy brisket that retained a subtle smoky punch - though not as smoke rich as the burnt ends of the artist formerly known as Oklahoma Joe's in KCMO. Fried onion rings similarly featured a light batter, not the breaded mummification found at lesser joints. Unfortunately, the grilled cheese took a half hour to reach the table despite my being the second table to order for lunch service. By 12:30, quoted food times stretched to an hour, and out-of-town guests looking for Smoke Shack offerings began to trickle out the door, unsatisfied. Next time, will visit the Smoke Shack for Smoke Shack meats. read more

The Pig Pen is my neighborhood joint. I have been here many times. I would make it my regular hangout but it doesn't carry any beer that my husband likes so we tend to go where he can get a good stout. They usually have at least one or two IPA's on tap and that makes me happy. As a hamburger lover, I have to give their hamburger just an average score. It's good but not amazing. Fries are good too. My favorite menu item is the BBQ brisket nachos. They are OUTSTANDING and HUGE. You can share these for sure. The BBQ Brisket grilled cheese is yummy too. The wings are pretty good. The tacos are okay. My son enjoys the hot wings and fried pickles. We have only gone for brunch once before COVID and the brunch selection was pretty massive and everything was pretty tasty. I was pleased with the fried chicken and the brisket. I wasn't pleased with the price. It is expensive. If you have little ones they have a great outdoor area for seating and a little playscape for the kiddos. And on Tuesday nights they have open mic nite. They have so much to offer. I came here for brunch at the recommendation of my friend's friend. I planned on brunch that day. I wanted BBQ. I wanted a michelada. They delivered on all accounts - however - the food is not all perfect (that's allowable, right?). For the food items that I felt were mediocre, they had SO. MUCH. MORE. to offer. Had a friend visiting from out of town and all he'd eaten was Mexican or Tex-Mex since he got here on Friday. We definitely had to switch it up today. So we decided to try out Pigpen and omg we were not disappointed. The food was freaking awesome. When we walked in they were absolutely packed, it was a little chaotic and for being my first time it was slightly overwhelming for a bit since we didn't know where to go or what to do. We stood in a line that was apparently for the food, but we needed to be in the line to pay first, so I slipped out from one line and into the other leaving my dude in the food line so we wouldn't lose our spot. I paid the bartender, then slipped back in line for the food. It is set up buffet style on Sunday's, hence the line to get food. When we finally got to the food, it looked so good! Eggs, hash brown, silver dollar pancakes, biscuits, tortillas, breakfast sausage links, breakfast sausage patties, grits, Mac and cheese, collard greens, black eyed peas, pulled pork, bacon, brisket, blueberry cobbler, peach cobbler and then all the fixings, coffee, juice, fresh fruit... and everything was freaking amazing! Literally amazing! The brisket was tender, and had a great flavor. It wasn't the best brisket I've ever had but it was super super good. For a quick comparison, Augie's down the street has better brisket overall. But, this being what it was, a buffet, the brisket was better than expected, so hats off to the cook on that. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 was because there is no direction as far as when you arrive. For someone who had never been, It was super Overwhelming and my anxiety level was through the roof. I literally started sweating. I know it sounds crazy but for someone who deals with social anxiety it was almost enough to make me walk out the door. We like the food and it's a great buffet. The issue that I have is the music (band) is way too loud you can even hold a conversation. The space is very small their is no need to have the music that loud couldn't even enjoy having brunch had to leave before we could even finish our food. Always a little weary going to a bar with kids but we went for it with this one and were pleasantly surprised. We got there and entered through the front only to realize it was 2 and the buffet had ended. A nice young man that worked there kindly explained how the buffet was over but we could order food at the bar from the food truck. A fun little spot on Broadway. I've been here a few times and food quality has been consistent, prices average and service fast. It's nice having an option of sitting comfortably outside or inside. They do allow children but not after 9pm, which is a good thing in my opinion. Regarding the food, I suggest the brisket nachos, which is definitely enough for two people to share. They have a Sunday brunch buffet that's $16 pp which includes coffee and orange juice. It's a pretty decent buffet for the price. It has everything from brisket and bacon to peach cobbler and pancakes. If you're not into getting the buffet, there is a food truck available outside. There's plenty of outside seating with a mini playground for your littles. Live music is inside, but the seating is limited. We got there at 10:30 with plenty of seating available, but by 11:30 it was packed. Plan accordingly if you come for the buffet. Pigpen is a decent "barbecue" spot. I went to the Pig Pen last Tuesday. It was my first time going. As you go in, you can either sit outside in the patio or go inside. I chose inside since it was super hot! There are long tables, the bar and the stage. You order the food and the drinks at the bar. I really went because I was craving nachos and I have seen many reviews! The brisket nachos lived up to the reviews! There's nachos but these are in a whole 'nother level! The brisket was tender, full of flavor and it was smothered in cheese, topped with Guac. Who doesn't love that!!?? We also ordered tacos, pulled pork, brisket and shrimp! They were all really good but the shrimp was my favorite. The shrimps were cooked perfectly and the sauce was flavorful. We ordered also the frozen Arnold Palmer, it was perfect for that hot day. The only con was that you had to go to the bar to order instead of having a waitress go to the table, but that still doesn't take from the great munchies I just had. It was open mic night so a number of people sang and it was very good and entertaining. I do like the relaxed atmosphere. You order the food at the bar (order a drink too!) and someone will bring it to your table. I almost skipped this UYE, but I'm sure glad I didn't!! I was anxiously awaiting a UYE brunch to pop up on Sunday morning before my flight, so when one was announced at the Pigpen (which happened to be in the right direction for the airport) I jumped on it, and didn't even look at it really lol. Fast forward to actually being in San Antonio, and a few friends mentioned doing something else. I was torn, but in the end decided that I needed to see some more of my out of towners and headed to Pigpen....again, no real clue what I was in for lol. Upon arrival, I knew I had made the right choice instantly. Picnic style tables inside, a very full buffet set up, and an amazing set up of funky seating outside. I was sold. After grabbing a chair, I headed up to the bar to pay for my eats and get a plate and eyed the Bloody Marys. I opted not to get one (too much alcohol the day before) but that piece of brisket on the Bloody Mary told me, once again, I had made the right decision. Now, the day before I had the option to get some Southern Cuisine and turned it down to get Mexican instead.... in fact vowing to eat Mexican the whole time in SA lol, but the food served at Pigpen was amazing, and probably indicated that going full on Mexican in SA isn't the way to go! BBQ is a must too! The buffet line consisted of - Grits, Biscuits, Collared Greens, Brisket, Pulled Pork, Sausages, Catfish, Hash, Mac and Cheese, Pancakes, Eggs...and I'm sure I'm missing something. In fact, those who were brave enough to go back for seconds got some different items, so there's definitely a lot of good things here. My favorite being the Mac and Cheese by far!! Bartenders with bad attitudes and no skills. My buddy was making conversation while waiting for our drinks to be poured and asked the bartender what was in a jar on her well and before she could answer I said "oh those are brown sugar cubes". She then responded that they were brown sugar cubes and my buddy said "yeah my friend here is a bartender too" and her response was "he's a bartender and didn't know what those were?" while rolling her eyes lmao. Please girl you couldn't hold a torch to me when it comes to bartending. Also don't bring small children to play here, the Alamo Whites parents let their 12-15 year old kids run amuck while literal two year olds are trying to play and they don't even correct or discipline their kids. Sundays are the only time I've come. They have a brunch that ends at 2PM and it's worth trying out. The mac and cheese is better than Luby's. Everything else is good too but that mac and cheese is something else. During the brunch hours they have live music which I can best describe as bluegrass with some extra southern twang. My BIL was in town and REALLY wanted to get s bloody mary with some type of protein in it. So, we were in the area and decided to check this place out. I walked in and the set up of the restaurant was not what I had expected. Luckily, I had read another yelp review about ordering your food at the menu. i went up to the bar and was greeted almost immediately, I ordered the following: 1) Smoked Wings- you get an order of 6 wings with 1 side of bleu cheese and 1 side of ranch. They were super tender and very nicely seasoned. I really enjoyed them and recommend this. 2) Brisket Grilled Cheese- come hungry if you order this. A great amount of brisket was in the sandwich but my little nephew barely made a dent in it. The brisket was nice and flavorful. :) 3) Brisket Nachos- I love me some nachos but I don't know how I feel about this one. Don't get me wrong...everything on the plate was delish but I just thought it was a whole lot on the plate and it was just a little much for me. 4) Brisket bloody mary- I didn't taste this but my BIL really enjoyed it and he's picky with his bloody mary's.
