I booked here based on all the raving reviews. I don't understand how this got such high reviews. I guess by 'rustic' they mean 'dated'. It does remind you of olden days because it looks like it hasnt been updated since the 70s. Tiny rooms, bedspread looks dirty, and food from the previous renter was still in the fridge. They promote a pool but was told it was closed until it can be inspected and no date was given. I unfortucnately pre-paid based on the positive reviews and now am stuck here for 3 days. I cant imagine where other reviewers stayed previously that they gave this place 5 stars. read more

A really charming place. The owners have clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the vintage country chic decor and furnishings. Simple but clean. The gentleman who checked us in was pleasant and humorous. The small garden, fountain, etc were wonderful touches. While it's probably only a shadow of its former 50's road trip glory days, it was a welcome surprise to find it well cared for. The only issue was that the window above the bed had no window screen and the window in the "kitchen " alcove had no window covering. A street runs right outside this window thus a privacy curtain is needed. A very easy walk to the old town center with lots of tourist trap shops and a few nice eateries. The chocolate shop is not to be missed as is the updated Mediterranean restaurant. read more

Fantastic place to stay in Nevada City. I was in town for the Nevada City Film Festival, and lucky enough to stay here for three lovely nights. The owners are wonderful people, and you can tell they've poured their heart and soul into Outside Inn. Highlights: short walk to downtown, very clean and comfortable rooms, incredible water pressure in the shower, and lovely outside amenities (swings, hammock, stream, fire pit, pool). Highlight for me was making coffee in my room and enjoying it on the Adirondack chairs every morning in the garden, right by the stream. Can it get any better than that? read more

This is a gem of a motor lodge from yesteryear. The small number of rooms makes for a quaint atmosphere for guests. The lodge has been updated so it's cozy in the cold and quiet from your neighbors. The owners are very pleasant and do a good job of maintaining the property. For a good family getaway, reserve The Cottage, an actual 2 bed house with an outside deck and darling little front yard. Our room had a cute, vintage kitchenette that had all the amenities. The Outside Inn is one place you'll have to put on your list of places to visit, oh, and it's walking distance to good shopping and eateries. read more

The room was so cute and homey. Lots of character, clean, and lots added touches to feel homey such as glass wine glasses, a dog bowl and treat and popcycles offered daily for my kids. I really enjoyed the owners who are so warm and welcoming. They went out of their way to help my family find a place to stay late at night when the other place we booked was in the middle of a fire. So grateful they helped us. Beautiful property too, clean pool, loved the other guests, hammock, beautiful garden and farm baskets where people leave fresh fruit and vegetables. I'll begin by describing the generosity of the owners of the Outside Inn. We made reservations to stay here in April 2000 for a special occasion. We had to cancel due to COVID. They offered to refund our money, but we asked to get a certificate to use for a future date. A year later, they extended the expiration of our certificate for another year. Thank you!!! We chose to stay in the Rock Climbing Suite because this room, from online pictures we checked, had a table where we could have meals, two cozy seats in which to read and enjoy a beverage, and a king bed. When we arrived, we discovered that the room is an end room, with plenty of space. Plus, there are windows allowing natural light into the room from three sides (with the bathroom door open). In front, there is a bench as well as a small table and two bistro chairs behind a small privacy hedge. Parking is directly in front of the room. Couldn't be more convenient. And what a blast from the past staying in a motor hotel! The kitchen had utensils, plates, bowls, a cutting board, fridge, pans, two-burner stove, coffee maker, microwave, wine glasses, glass tumblers, and a toaster. The kind bed was very comfortable. The room actually has a wall that you can climb, but we didn't take advantage of it. The trash can and the leg of the bathroom counter/sink is wrapped in climbing rope. Another fun touch! The bathroom is twice the size of a normal bathroom, with a shower/tub combo. Convenient and fun additions to the grounds go a long way to creating a warm and welcoming feeling, including art pieces, picnic benches and tables, and a bit of whimsy in the signage. Restaurants and shops are an easy ten minute walk. At night, small green dots are projected on the trees and buildings behind the office. Another nice touch! While we were here, it was extremely quiet. We couldn't hear the other guests in the room next door. Outside is wonderfully peaceful and quiet. We'll be back! read more

My family and I had the most bizarre & disappointing stay at the Outside Inn over the weekend of June 21st. This is long, so bear with me. First let me say that I've been putting off this review as I was hoping to resolve our issues directly with the hotel but that's not coming to fruition. This is my first ever negative review of any business, but due to the lack of care, lies and strange communication from the owners, I feel compelled to write one. After checking in and settling into our room, we noticed the pool had been shut down by the county. We were in town with our 8 year old for a wedding and booked the hotel with another young family. Our main reason for staying at the hotel during the hot Nevada City Summer with 3 young children was the pool. And it was HOT that weekend (near 100). When we asked the front desk they assured us it would be open in the morning. It was not, nor did it the entire 3 nights and 4 days we were there. Each time we asked the owner about it he would ramble incoherently about how the regular inspector was out of town, that the Interim inspector was clearly an idiot who barely spoke English, and how he was concerned about where this country was going (?!?) He repeated this ad nauseam each time I tried to speak with him, clearly trying to avoid any professional or meaningful conversation about what this meant for us as hotel guests (I'm in hospitality and I would have offered credit to stay another time when the pool was up and running). On night 2, with a heat wave in full effect, our AC stopped working. When I brought this to his attention he came in, put his hand over the unit and shrugged. He said it was because my windows were open (I had literally just opened them after having the AC on for hours while I was out to dinner and returning to a hot room). When I told him I just opened the windows he just mumbled and walked out of the room. Since I was helping with the wedding we were in town for I didn't have a lot more time to spend discussing this further with the owners until our departure on Sunday. After we talked to them about our grievances, they offered us $5 a night compensation. We said that was not enough and that we'd be fine with a credit if they didn't want to give us straight money. The woman at the front desk told us to email owner to talk further since she wasn't the owner. When we emailed the owner he said he would give us $15 a night, which we still felt was unsatisfactory. I emailed a second time further explaining our grievances (at this point they still hadn't even acknowledge that they didn't deal with the AC) to which they replied with a full on LIE that their pool actually isn't open until July and that the inspection was scheduled to make sure it was ready for said opening. The first time we talked to the woman at the front desk, she explained that the county inspectors came unexpectedly, but that she was glad that they had come on a Thursday so that she could get it taken care of before the busy weekend. Plus, if you know Nevada city, then you know it's notoriously warm in June so it would make no sense for their pool to not be open until July (especially this year as it was hot early in the season - I'm sure the season is flexible so them saying this about the strain being July-Oct was a way to get out of paying anything back to us). This latest response also didn't mention any compensation (or the AC, again) so I'm assuming at this point they are not willing to do anything to make things right. It was such a weird and insulting response that I felt compelled to write this review. We will NEVER stay here again. read more

We've stayed here many times but this is my first review. We've always preferred to stay here as the previous owner really made the place wonderfully comfortable aside from being super friendly. Happily, the new owner has taken the torch and is running this hotel wonderfully. On our last visit, we stayed in the "Cabin". This has a kitchen, huge comfortable bed, a Jacuzzi tub AND a shower. The towels are thick and fluffy, and the a/c made the room so nice during the current heatwave. Not only are there BBQ's outside of the rooms, the owner supplies the coals and utensils. We were only there for four days, but could have stayed a month. He had a great time grilling rib eyes and the owner gave us fresh zucchini that we stir fried in the cabin kitchen. Seeing as this is also wine country, we purchased from a local winery and everything was perfect. It's also a short walk to the main historic town, so we really never had to get into our car to visit the stores or restaurants. I highly recommend this hotel. P. Bazinet read more

Once again, our experience at the Outside Inn was top notch. From self check-in to self check-out and everything in between. A very professional and welcoming front desk staff and a kind and helpful housekeeping staff. Nice grounds for strolling around, VERY quiet at night and a great location, walking distance from downtown. This has been our go-to place in NC since finding it by accident one day while cruising around the area on our motorcycles about 10 years ago. We even had Grubhub deliver our dinner one night! I needed a place to stay while attending a reunion outside Nevada City. I wanted a clean room for myself and my ailing dog. My dog, a big shepherd/husky mix, was almost 11 years and having trouble walking. I didn't want to leave him with a shelter but take him with me where I could care for him better. The room was clean, the bed was good, outfitted with essentials, coffee maker, mini-fridge, microwave in kitchen area to take care of my pup. The decorations were modest but very appealing, and comfortable for me and my dog. The staff were wonderful. Obviously, true dog lovers. Of course, they were exceptionally good with my dog. (My dog has been well trained--AKC "good citizen" and obedience for just such motel stays, among other things.) The staff gave me some treats for my dog, which he totally loved and won him over. My room was just a few minutes' walk from the center of Nevada City, full of the ambience and charm of the town. For me, it was "outside" of town, but I got that it's a great place for folks interested In outside activities near Nevada City, be they hiking and backpacking (cleanup after a long trek), skiing, etc. Definitely, 5-stars here!!! It's Halloween @ the Outside Inn!! This place is perfect and so adorable. I was on a me, myself, & I trip this week and booked 2 nights here. Loved my stay in room 3 1/2, yep a half room, lol. Rooms are all themed mine being 'Outside In' with puffy clouds on sky walls, twin beds. Even at 70 I felt like a kid on an adventure :) Everything you'd want in a room, frig, coffee, hair dryer, iron. Bathroom had great lighting, shower had lots of hot water with plenty of pressure, a shower curtain long & wide enough so no water could escape (who knew that existed). There is a cute shed with ice machine, & a laundry room. Who does laundry on a vaca, not me, but there for those who do;) The grounds are delightful, and the walk to town is about 3 blocks. Love this place, would definitely recommend. read more

Stayed here for a wedding nearby. I was the planner/coordinator, stayed 2 nights. First night after a majority of setup I was so looking forward to bed. Unfortunately the bed was just above the floor in terms of softness. Woke up with both shoulders sore from attempted side sleeping. Night two, after the wedding, I debating just driving the 2.5 hours home. My room was not very clean, wore socks around and ended up with all sorts of debris in bed on the first night. read more

Upon arrival, we were told that someone? had cancelled our reservation just days before. Upon research by me, it was someone named "Geeta" who is very much not me. I am not sure if she was the person in the office who didn't help us. Basically left us stranded with no place to stay. No excuse, no apology, and no answer for us! We finally got to the Outside Inn after postponing twice due to Covid. The owners were incredibly gracious about postponing. Originally, we were going in the spring, but we had time this October, so we went. Even in the middle of the week, every room was occupied. We loved having a separate bedroom and kitchen. We are still not comfortable eating inside restaurants and it was a little cold for outside dining, so we were happy to have a kitchen table, where we ate our take out meals. The room was spotless, comfortable and very dog-friendly. The kitchen was well equipped, too. Overall, it was a great place. Outside Inn is a quick walk to downtown, so we didn't have to worry about parking. While we were in town, we visited the Empire Mine State Park, which had gorgeous gardens and lots of walking. We and our dog enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. read more

The only issue is that it was it was not within walking distance to the shops and restaurants for us. Maybe if you're young, it might be but it would be a hike. I arrived on Sunday without a reservation, returning home to the bay area from Sierraville, and decided to stay overnight in the area. A friend had previously recommended Outside Inn, and I booked the River Room at the suggestion of staff. I can't say enough about the great service and the very clean and well appointed room. It was awesome and I really enjoyed my stay. Did I say the room was super clean and cozy? I also appreciated being able to park right in front of my room, for unloading and packing up my car! Lastly, it's an easy walk into town. Outside Inn is my new go-to place for my frequent Nevada City/Grass Valley visits. read more

You must stay here. This Inn is a gem in so many ways. Beginning with the immaculate, well stocked and creatively decorated rooms, it doesn't stop there. Every time we turned around we noticed another thoughtful and helpful amenity. Want to grill out? Charcoal, grills and picnic tables included with your stay. Want to cool off in the pool? Enjoy the clean and restful pool with towels available. Need a roll-away? I stopped in the office and they had literally put the roll away in our room before I got back to it myself. Stayed there once, it was nice. Booked again for a trip and had to cancel the next day, more than two weeks from our prospective check in. We were charged a 10% cancellation fee. We booked the room on March 7, 2021 for March 23, 2021 and had to cancel on March 8, 2021. I will never stay there again. If this is how they treat people who have an honest reason to cancel and more than 14 days away, what will they do if you really need help. read more

My Love surprised me with a weekend getaway. We went here as stayed at the Wildflower room. So quaint and cute. I only stayed one night but it was so much fun. Nevada City is one of my favorite places to go with My Love. Room was clean. Bathroom was clean. Did not smell of cigarettes. I will definitely visit again. They have different rooms with different themes. It's a family owned business and we should support them as much as possible. read more

5 star experience!! We enjoy our annual visit to the Outside Inn in Nevada City and have been doing so for the past 7-8 years. We love that most of the rooms are dog friendly and have kitchenettes. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are always clean. The pool is a lovely feature on those hot summer days! I'm so disappointed at the Outside Inn. We were going to stay there this weekend with two friends who recently had a baby and have been going stir crazy. Unfortunately, due to all the fires nearby, the air quality isn't fit for a newborn. I called to cancel as soon as we found out (69 hours before instead of their 72 hours cancellation policy) and they did nothing to work with us. I fully understand not getting a full refund but we weren't even offered a partial refund or a credit to stay another time. Instead, they took all of my money and told me, politely, to go f*ck myself. The woman on the phone was nice and I don't want to bash her; but the fact that there was no wiggle room in the midst of a wildfire outbreak during a pandemic felt wholly unreasonable. I'm so disheartened :( read more
