This charming property is a dichotomy between good and bad. The rooms are well appointed and the historic setting and character is charming for a history buff. However, the detachment of the employees and the seeming inability to connect with guests is a little offputting for the price. The front desk staff rarely make eye contact and don't smile at all, but get the job done. Perhaps this is true to historic character? Our room had two double beds and was surprisingly large. We visited during the heat of the summer, but the air conditioning worked well and we were comfortable when in our room and throughout the hotel. However, there is no mirror in the bedroom - only the bathroom mirror and there is very little counter space, only the nightstand in the room. No counter space in the bathroom, either. If you would like ice in your room. You must go down to the bar and request it from one of the bartenders when the bar is open. Not very convenient. The hotel has wonderful historic charm with various sitting areas both inside and out. Along with the jurors c charm comes no elevators, so bear that in mind when packing. The parking lot behind the hotel enters on the second level, which can be helpful when checking in. I don't think we will stay here again, particularly for the price, but it was a fun experience for the "historical" setting. read more

Fantastic breakfast at the hotel this morning. I ordered the ribeye scramble- tasty pieces of ribeye steak covered with a delicious chimichurri sauce on top of scrambled eggs and arugula with some lovely roasted potatoes on the side . The dish is fabulous bursting with flavor..... an absolute home run. My wife had a half order of biscuits and gravy with 1 egg and was raving about it. The cheddar and chives biscuit was the bomb , excellent sausage gravy on top...... can you say comfort food. My wife has a small appetite so the 1/2 order was more than enough and at 9$ quite a bargain!! You can feel the history of this hotel that dates back to 1856, the bar area is awesome with beautiful woodwork. The historic brick building just draws you in , like "I need to go in there"....... I had seen the dinner menu the night before and it was a little pricy so we decided to try breakfast first and now I can't wait to go back for dinner, if they are putting that much love into breakfast , I'm sure dinner at the National Exchange Hotel will not disappoint !! Overall, this hotel is absolutely stunning. The decor in every area is beautiful and well done. Also, the customer service is great. Debbie and Alexi were wonderful and gave excellent customer care. Our room was mostly good. There is no comfortable seating in the room however, although it may have just been our room. We had a room in the annex section out back. Leaving our room, we were immediately outside in the weather, which wasn't too big of a deal other than it was storming. Additionally, the shower had not had a decent cleaning in a LONG time. Mildew and mold was growing heartily from the floor to about 3 feet up the wall. A little scrub could easily take care of it. Also, the hooks for the towels are right over the toilet so be very careful that your towel doesn't slip off the hook as mine did, or you'll have a toilet water soaked towel. There is absolutely no coffee in the room so you have to go outside in the storm to get to the coffee which isn't open until after 7. Also we were at the coffee station at 7:50 and the one small pot was already almost gone and the 30 minutes we waited for someone to refill it, no one came. The next HUGE problem is the parking. There are no marked spaces for the hotel so good luck getting a spot until after all businesses are closed. We had to move our car 3 times due to the parking regulations of time. read more

The hotel decor was beautiful. The feeling welcome was another story. We found coffee in the morning when it was gone, There was 1 muffin there. No one told us about any coffee being served. The hotel has no TVs. It was a bit boring, the town closed up early. Also it is extremely expensive we paid four or five hundred a night. No warm and fuzzy feelings coming from there. We will not go back. When you spend so much the hospitality should be much higher than that. read more

Love! Love! Love this place. The bar is so beautiful. It is breathtaking to look around the bar and take in the history. Our cocktails were delicious! The bartender was friendly and engaging. Served and made quickly. He even took the time to answer questions about a certain unique liquor and gave me a small taste. Very cool! We sat at the window and it was spectacular to sip and chat in such a beautiful atmosphere. We could have sat there all day. Biggest regret is we did not know there was an upstairs! Outside uncovered parking is next door to the hotel and lots of paid metered parking in front. It's handicap accessible entrance but with no elevators. Our room was on the third floor. Check in was easy and the gal was friendly You get 2 free cocktails and a $10 voucher off of the food at Lola every day you're staying there. The rooms are nice but ours had water in the ice bucket and a q tip on the outside window sill. There is some noise in the rooms with the usual water in the pipes sound but nothing too loud. This is a beautifully remodeled hotel with a great restaurant on site (Lola) BUT there is no elevator for handicap people. We went in the back entrance and there was only a set of lengthy stairs to try to make it down to the first floor restaurant/bar. If you are disabled you will have to stay on the first floor. My daughter and I stayed here to celebrate our birthdays, let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint!!!! We stayed in the King Studio and the room was amazing!!! All the details in this room, so incredible. Debbie greeted us and treated my daughter like a birthday queen! Kate the GM was beyond helpful and accommodating! The claw foot bath in this room was amazing. The bed superrrrr comfy (we slept so good). Muffins and coffee in the morning was such a nice treat that we didn't expect! So many nice lounge areas around the hotel to take fun pictures in and just relax. We had delicious non alcoholic cocktails at the bar. Everything about this place is magical and memorable. The restaurant also has the best food in town. All sourced so well! And insanely delicious! Can't wait to come back and stay again!! read more

A few weeks before a trip to Nevada City someone who knew about these things gave me these marching orders: "Get a cocktail at the National Exchange Hotel and take it upstairs". The fabulously updated National Exchange Hotel has its roots in the gold rush of the 1800s. The bar area is full of interesting vintage photos, the decor is spot on, and the cocktail list is swoon-worthy. I enjoyed "Diary of a Nobody" ($13) which I ordered simply because I loved the name then enjoyed it enough to desire another. But by that time I was already upstairs where there's another bar with a more limited selection. Thus, drink #2 was an equally good if less creatively named Manhattan. So the drinks and atmosphere are 5 star but why go upstairs you may ask? Upstairs, indoors, is perhaps the biggest sofa you have ever in your life seen. Then, if that doesn't grab you, there's a balcony up there, outfitted with tables and chairs which overlook the charming main street below. The National Exchange Hotel - and Nevada City, frankly - charmed me enough to envision a return visit. After all, with a restaurant and a place of lodging, there's far more to enjoy here than just a not-so-simple cocktail. read more

We had the best time staying at National Exchange during Xmas holiday. We had a Queen suite (room 209), very clean and loved the Victorian style atmosphere and furniture. The bed was very comfortable and I really enjoyed my sleep quality. The heater worked great as well and our room temperature was always comfortable. The bathroom was large and I really enjoyed my showers with the oversized rainfall shower head. It amazed me how the water was always hot as soon as we opened the faucet! You get two very comfy and high quality robes in the bathroom as well. The staff are very friendly and loved getting to know Kendra specifically, she is super nice and helpful. Debbie at front desk was also very nice and friendly. The level of niceness of the staff was definitely beyond what I've expected in most hotels I've traveled to. We loved the morning banana muffins and great quality coffee. We ate at the restaurant (Lola) every day, the food is phenomenal, great portions, and reasonably priced. I have included food pictures on my review of Lola for your view. I had a couple of spooky incidents the first day we arrived, which prompted me to research the history of the hotel. Little did I know that the hotel is actually well known for its history and claims of paranormal activities. The more I learned the more I felt at ease and the 4 days stay was extremely fun and enjoyable. Would I go back? Absolutely yes, in fact I can't wait and looking forward to it. read more

Incredibly opulent, beautifully restored, old hotel! I had the cabin room #401. It was perfectly tiny for just me. The furnishings were beautiful. It had a red velvet headboard, antique dresser, big floral wall paper, and antique radio that worked! The bathroom was a great mix of old and new. I would have loved a claw foot tub to soak in, but the beautiful new shower with huge brass shower head, and fittings was wonderful. I'll have to ask for a tub room next time I come. The bed was so comfortable with big cozy comforter, I didn't want to wake up. read more

Really cool 160 year old hotel. The decor is fantastic, especially in the lobby, and I'm kicking myself for not getting pictures. Our room was also really pretty with a great view of the downtown. It was an added bonus that we woke up to a winter wonderland on the street. We had a king suite so it had a little living room lots of windows, a very comfortable bed and an updated bathroom , the only drawback was that there was no closet In addition, the staff was really friendly and said that if we couldn't get out in the snow storm, we could stay in our room another night... We dropped in for a quick cocktail in the hotel bar. Interesting dark woods and atmosphere. Bartender was efficient and poured a proper drink for me. It all seemed very local actually, except for a couple tables. Prices were on the high side but I expected that being in a hotel. read more

I find older hotels a hit or miss and have stayed at many that although nice on the outside, the rooms were musty..... Not this one! What great rooms and great social areas. I also loved all the outdoor balconies with tables you could enjoy to look at this gorgeous city. The rooms were so nice and contemporary with high end tile floors, great sinks and showers, comfortable quality bed, and linens, towels and bedding that were high quality. The rooms were beautiful, clean, and really high quality remodel. We will be back. Probably my favorite hotel in Nevada City and right on Broad Street. Here for the Marti Gra parade- so also grateful for the parking! We were really surprised at how nice this hotel was. read more

I feel like I've stumbled upon one of the best hotels I've ever experienced. From beginning to end, it was exceptional. The front desk employee was friendly, clear and professional. The decor/attention to detail and the incredible amount of spaces for guests to sit and relax, the dinner at Lola (downstairs) was absolutely delicious, incredible service. The balcony veranda was delightful at sunset when the temperature cooled. The waterfall shower in our room warrants its own review. Free coffee and pastries in the morning. The hotel and staff are great. Third floor room with a view of a utility courtyard. There was no one there so maybe an upgrade? Gentleman helped me with my luggage since there was no elevator. Received $10 in food credit which was nice. Three stars because of the breakfast and restaurant. Only one type of baked goods. Dinner was pasta with absolutely no flavor. Weird that they had cherrie halves on it. Service was really slow. Bar was open until 9:00 but music ended at 7:00. Cute location but underwhelmed. read more

I regret nothing! This meal was absolutely incredible. The fried chicken was 100% worth burning my mouth to shove it in. Flavorful, moist, crunchy- chicken perfection! The steak tartare was delicious! Simple, but really highlights each quality ingredient. Perhaps it could be served with a by more bread crisps. Loved the oysters with the cranberry mignonette! Bright, crisp, and nicely highlighted the oyster flavor. The seafood chowder seemed pricy, but honestly? It was filled with so much seafood I get it. It's not mostly potatoes. It had a gray flavorful broth, nicely cooked seafood and I loved the mountain of butter on my sourdough toast it came with. Our waiter Pascal was fantastic! Served things at just the right time, gave good suggestions, and had a delightful frenchie quality I love! I even got a wink. My husband and I look forward to returning again some time. While I'm the dining room a jazz trio started planning in the adjoining bar and it was a great atmosphere! We will cutely return, and maybe grab a room at the National hotel next time. read more

Gorgeous mid-century modern bar and restaurant! We got the eggs benedict which came with a saffron hollandaise sauce. It was incredible. The eggs were poached perfectly. The yolk oozed out slowly and wasn't runny. The hollandaise sauce was incredible. My mother in law trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and I've never had a hollandaise sauce that compared to hers until now. Definitely of the best benedicts I've ever had. We also shared a French toast that was also perfectly done. It came with a vanilla bean mascarpone and wasn't too sweet or heavy! The prices weren't incredibly unreasonable for what you get. We happened to be in town for a friend's birthday and stopped by here for a drink. There was an event going on (Coco Lamarr, who was fantastic.) We grabbed a few different cocktails from their featured menu, and even tested the bartenders with some uncommon cocktails off menu; to which they handled beautifully. Jannah our waitress was also super friendly and helpful, which made the experience that much better. Based on reviews it seems some people aren't stoked on craft cocktails, to which I remind that there are plenty of dive bars for the usual jack and coke you're used to. It's totally okay if this is not for you, but for someone who enjoys making and consuming them, this place is fantastic. Friendly employees, friendly volunteers. Restaurant named Lola, wonder if named for Lola Montez. On walls of hallways are black and white pictures of different birds. No television in the rooms, thank goodness. The amenities, such soaps, shampoos, lotions, they are in syrup size jars. Most hotels are just small bottles. This, if say stay of ten nights and eleven days, they will last the entire stay. Other hotels, when the bottles used, are empty, House Keeping will have to replace. Not here, the syrup size of amenities should last the entire ten nights and eleven nights of the stay. Close by some hiking trails, walkable of Pioneer Park. Maybe not as much now, however, my previous reviews, all wore masks. Great hotel. If one likes hiking, as say there are hiking trails walkable of this hotel, then yes, stay here. read more

We have mixed feelings about the National. We did a hotel block and a brunch for our wedding in October 2023. Looking at the regular rates, it seemed like they extremely upcharged the rooms on our stay since it was a wedding. As a local trying to keep our money in the community, this is really disappointing. We worked with the event manager and she was all over the place. We initially booked a room block and a post wedding brunch for our guests in the upstairs room. After contracts were signed and the deposit was paid, the event manager asked us if we would be willing to move our brunch to the outdoor courtyard in exchange for a slight discount to our hotel room. This was because another group was promised the room we had already booked for brunch. Luckily, since the contract was signed, we were locked in. The day of our post wedding brunch, we did not have enough food for the guests that we paid for. The food was cold and when they finally restocked the brunch, most people had already left. Considering it was a hefty sum of money, we expected there to be enough food. We never heard back from the event manager at all after the wedding. She never checked in to see how things went. All around, the communication was not great. With our experience, I couldn't imagine booking a full wedding here, which we did consider. Aside from that, the rooms are absolutely stunning and very clean. It's in a convenient location and the young man who worked the front desk was so kind and helpful. read more

This beautiful gem of a hotel is newly renovated. It's beautifully decorated and gorgeously furnished. We had a room on the third floor facing the front of the hotel. Be forewarned, the older windows are single paned so you will hear the traffic from the street and the nearby highway. However, the noise is worth the view in my opinion. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. The rooms are beautiful with gorgeous wallpaper and an amazing shower. Don't miss the continental breakfast with the delicious pumpkin muffins! The second floor balcony is the perfect location for breakfast or a sunset cocktail. The location is ideal for exploring the eclectic local stores on foot and driving to the Empire Mine State Park. read more
