We had never gonna wine tasting before so this was our first time! This place had good reviews and the pictures of this place looked too cute. We drove all the way here from Davis. The trip was a little longer than what we expected. And all I can say is most GPS's don't know how to get you here and google maps isn't very smart. So follow the directions in the e-mail that they send you!! This place is owned by Marcia and Tony. I worked with Tony over the phone for my reservations. He wasn't the quickest with technology and taking down my information so you should have patience or make reservations online - FYI I made mine over the phone because of the Living Social deal. When we got there to check-in, we found Tony was away and Marcia was left to handle things on her own. She's a very sweet lady. She's also the one that makes all the food! Amazing cook!! The rooms are very cozy. The hubs was impressed the high-tech door lock that used a number pad. I liked that the room was like a mini 1 bedroom cottage. It had a very romantic feel to it, which was perfect. We made sure to take advantage of the fireplace and the whirlpool tub. But I think my favorite part was the bed! Very soft sheets and you just melt away into sleep. The only issue we had with the room were the bugs. Now don't let that scare you. It's just that my hubby extremely dislikes bugs. We found 2 baby spiders, 1 yellow jacket, 3 mosquitos. I think bugs are bound to get in and they weren't much of a problem for me to handle. Now the food! Yes it is also a B&B afterall. First day: we were served 4 muffins with pecans on top and honey and butter on the side. YUM!! Next was a slice of baked pineapple with toasted coconut shavings - never had this combo before and it was good. The main course was poached eggs with polenta. I was a bit skeptical, but it was good too! There was juice as well. Hubs and I opted for the pomegranate juice. Second day: margaritas with no alcohol, but still tasty! There was also homemade granola and I'm a fan of granola. The main course was BELGIAN WAFFLES! They were loaded with fruit and some bacon on the side. YUM YUM YUM! I'm a huge fan of the food here. Marcia is great! FYI, she also makes a cake every night that you can go into the main lodge and get some. The first night there was an apple cake that was just soooo good. She even gave me the recipe for it. Note: when you check-in, they ask about food allergies etc. Hubs is lactose intolerant so Marcia made sure to not put any cheese in the polenta or yogurt in the margarita.

There were candy in bowl on the dresser. Two luggage racks available for our use. There's a backdoor that leads to the patio. There's plenty of parking for guests. Good number of rooms. Our cottage was incredibly cozy, and our days were filled with simple joys: harvesting vegetables from the garden, feeding the bunnies, collecting eggs from the chicken coop, helping shepherd the goats, and playing with the cats. There's also a beautiful beach less than a 5-minute drive away, making it the perfect balance of farm and coast. At Mar Vista, fresh eggs are delivered to your cottage every day. On our last day, we noticed every single egg in our egg basket was blue! We realized Cab or Deanna had probably hand-picked the blue eggs for us after learning that our toddler was in a phase where she loved everything blue. It was such a thoughtful gesture that meant so much to us. And who knew eggs came in so many beautiful colors? That was one of many incredible things we learned/experienced at Mar Vista. Our toddler has been asking to go back every single day since we left, and honestly, so have we. We can't wait to return.

If you want a break from cooking or want a meal prepped for when you arrive, you can add in the option of a dinner or picnic basket to your reservation as well. For the activities such as chicken chat and goat gab we weren't able to attend; it was raining pretty heavily during our stay so we opted to stay indoors and enjoy the cozy cabin. For the moments where the rain would stop, it was nice to explore the land, making stops by the bunnies and chickens with our dogs. Definitely planing on coming back! Because of that history, I never expected to be treated this way. We experienced a genuine family emergency that forced us to leave early and requested a refund for our unused Sunday and Monday nights. These were weekday nights not a weekend or holiday, and the hotel kept 100% of the charges for both nights despite us not being there. What made the situation even worse was the amount of time we had to spend going back and forth during an already stressful family emergency. The front desk staff repeatedly told us they understood and agreed a refund was appropriate, but the owner instructed them not to issue one. For several days, staff members seemed confused about the situation, while the owner/manager refused to respond to phone calls or text messages. We were left waiting, following up repeatedly, and receiving no direct communication from the person making the decision. I understand businesses have cancellation policies, but there should also be room for compassion and reasonable discretion, especially for LOYAL, repeat guests who have spent thousands of dollars over the years and have personally referred many others to stay here. Unfortunately, this experience erased years of goodwill. Customer service is tested when something unexpected happens, and this hotel failed that test. We will NEVER stay here again, and after this experience, I can no longer recommend it to friends, family, or clients. What a HUGE disappointment Cottage Grove. I recently stayed three nights at Cottage Grove Inn in Calistoga, paying about $1,997 total. The…read moreproperty is charming at first glance--beautiful garden setting, cottage-style rooms on a tree-lined street, and very friendly, warm service. The grounds are well kept and the inn is clean, with clear potential to be a truly special place. However, at nearly $700 per night on a weekend, the experience fell well short of expectations. The property feels underinvested. The furnishings are dated and worn rather than intentionally antique, and the bathroom is significantly outdated. Towels were also visibly old and frayed. The biggest issue was the bed. It was extremely uncomfortable--more like old, degraded foam than a supportive mattress--and made sleep difficult, with noticeable motion transfer even with a partner. We pulled back the bedding and found an old foam topper over a worn, stained mattress. Using a photo of the manufacturer's label, we determined the mattress was manufactured in September 1996 and likely purchased at Square Deal Mattress Factory in Chico, CA. If accurate, that would make the mattress over 30 years old, which is far beyond any reasonable replacement cycle for a hospitality property at this price point. Breakfast was also disappointing--limited, mostly store-bought items such as stale croissants, basic English muffins, and very weak coffee with minimal quality or attention to detail. In summary, Cottage Grove Inn has a beautiful setting, clean rooms, and excellent staff, but the lack of investment in core comfort elements--especially beds, bathrooms, and furnishings--makes the value difficult to justify. The room was well cleaned every day and supplied with ample towels for our days on the lake. The terrific hosts (R and F) kept the main house open for us to use the kitchen, access to free drinks and fruits, and access to Internet (I strongly urge you to stay off-line as long as possible).
