I ended up here for Christmas dinner. How that happened is quite the story. I decided to head out to the Everglades to take some pictures on Christmas Day. Way out, where I didn't have phone service and wouldn't you know it, my tire completely shredded. Even better, the spare wouldn't hold air. After hitch hiking to the police station, having the awesome Miccosoukee police and one wildlife officer change the tire the first time, limping to a gas station and waiting several hours for another tire I was famished. On my way out of the Everglades I passed this place and it satisfied my one requirement, it was open. I was actually surprised that this place was as busy as it was but it was hopping. It actually has a kind of Old Florida look that I really like. Real old, like the bathrooms are attached outside to the back of the building. You can eat inside the small restaurant or under the spacious tikki hut outside as I did. The service is somewhat crusty. Friendly is not a word I would use. I ordered the boneless chicken breast that was so rubbery I could have used it for my tire. It was served with lackluster fries. I bought dinner for my companion who seemed to really like his meal off a half chicken and ribs. They also serve uniquely Florida items like gator bites but I like my alligators to photograph not eat. Two meals and two beers came to $50. This place is close to Shark Valley so they likely get a lot of tourists from the park. I probably won't be back but I won't ever forget my visit. read more

Usually I only write good reviews, but this experience was far from that. The Pit Bar-B-Q, in 8th street. Food was ok, but after getting the bill, we notice pressure from the server for an additional tip (after 18% already in the bill). No printed bill was given to us to check accuracy, only at the end. Then we noticed several "add on" that no explanation was given. We are now used to a 18% tip, then came a $5 for credit card usage, tips were added to calculate taxes and finally an $8 charge was added after we saw the bill in the portable "thingy", now used in restaurants. The Pit has been a long time stop for BBQ in Miami. While the service may be on the slow side, you did drive out of Miami is avoid people rushing you. They do a very good job smoking meats. The place also has a decent outdoorsy appeal. That's it. They don't accept credit cards. They only work in cash. They have an ATM machine, which feels like a debit card fraud hack heaven. The prices are exuberant. The service feels like they'd rather not be there tending to you and try to rush you through your meal. If you need to use the facilities to relieve yourself or just wash your hands; I recommend a tetanus shot beforehand. The restroom feels like the same setting you'd find at a rest stop or a gas station. To sum it up save yourself your money, drive a few blocks back before (if you are leaving town) or forward (if you are entering town) and enjoy a better meal elsewhere. Always wanted to try this place out. The food was pretty good. I ordered the barbecue sandwich with seasoned fries and an iced tea so the waitress told me they had no iced tea. The french fries did not have seasoning and when I was finished with the barbecue sandwich, I asked for a wet wipe to clean my hands and they didn't have that either. This is a hidden gem nestled down in homestead. I found myself out in the middle of nowhere for work one week and stumbled across this awesome BBQ restaurant. There is a ton of parking, I went for lunch multiple times and had no problem finding a spot in the vast parking lot. There is a huge outdoor seating area and a small air conditioned indoor seating area. I had no problem getting a table in the air conditioning. I ordered the conch fritters to start with and they were DELICIOUS. I went out on a limb since we're right next to the everglades but I was so happy that I did. The sauce that they came with was very spicy and complimented them well. During the week that I was down in homestead I tried the baby back ribs, the spare ribs and their gator bites. All of the entrees that I got were amazing. I had a great experience overall. The sides that came with the entrée were hit or miss honestly. A couple of the days my baked beans came out cold but they were still very good. They even had Mexican coke with pure sugar cane. My father wanted to come here on his birthday because it was a place he would always stop at for a meal before or after his adventures in the Everglades growing up, and I am so happy we did. There is no indoor seating available, outdoors only. It wasn't as hot as I thought it would be, there is a breeze, shade and a lot of fans which was very nice. They are very clean and wipe everything down. Plastic silverware only and sticking to Covid rules and guidelines. We ordered the gator bites and a bucket of beers to start. You can customize the bucket however you would like with all kinds of different beers. The gator bites were okay, I have had better, a little on the chewy side but the sauces were delicious. We got the ribs, highly recommend! It is one of their best options. I also got the chicken, everything was cooked perfectly. You have the option of 2 sides I got double baked beans because I love them that much. They did not disappoint so so so good. My boyfriend went for the plantains and rice and black beans. Had the slow cooked ribs with fries and coleslaw. The sides were very good but the ribs were just ok. I've had better slow cooked ribs as well as made it at home, these ribs did not seem like they were slow cooked. This place is definitely overhyped. Waiter was friendly and attentive. One thing that was never mentioned to us, nor were there any signs, was we had to pay with cash only as they don't accept card. We were then conveniently told they had an ATM in the restaurant. I've been here twice, both times after a trip to the Everglades National Park. It's a nice place with a large parking lot, lots of outdoor seating and friendly staff and is very conveniently located on US-41 on the way back from the Everglades. There are lots of food selections ranging from chicken, frog legs, shrimp, barbecue pork, and more with a wide variety of sides to choose from too. The food is decent and definitely very filling however price is a little high for what you are getting. I got the grilled shrimp with Moro rice and enjoyed the shrimp. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but would definitely recommend it on your drive back into the city or if you're in the area. read more

Saw this place after a trip to the Everglades and gave it a shot. We went with the Famous Pit Gator fries and Everglade Frog Legs. The names of these are in quotes, so make of that what you will. The Everglades frog legs were chewy, stringy, and had tendons throughout the meat. The sauce was a horseradish-mustard mix that we found competent. The Gator Fries were the shape of mc nuggets and had a basic white meat taste. The sauce was spicy and good. The best part of the meal was the coke in a bottle with real sugar. As a Kansas City native, I admit I judge BBQ by a high standard. This place always has a full parking lot, which is usually a good sign. Now that I finally ate there, I cannot understand why. My hunt for good bbq in Miami must continue. Their specialty, pork ribs, were chewy, flavorless, and barely edible. The pulled pork was no better, even with the canned sauce that's only available on request. Aside from a couple of gator novelties, these were the only bbq meats on the menu. The service was fine, despite failing to return my credit card with the check. We stopped after an amazing morning at Shark Valley. What an wonderful place, what a great bargain. The meats are perfectly smoked, their barbeque sauces the best. The portions on the platters are huge, enough for two meals. One friend enjoyed the rib platter thoroughly, another loved the catfish. Two had sandwiches and ate every bite. This little shindig is located between civilization and Miccosukee Casino. During the day it is pretty calm, plenty of parking, and during the weekends they have a clown and ponies for the children to enjoy. Saturday and Sunday nights this is the spot to be. It becomes extremely packed. The crowd are all people ready to spend the next three hours drinking and dancing. There are few waiters, so be prepared to wait a bit, but service is good. Everyone is extremely kind and attentive. The food is good, especially their gator bites. Their wings were good as well, very crunchy. Their fries were a bit too oily for my taste. They need to redo their menus, they are so worn out you could barely read some items from the menu. They have very limited parking spots. If you choose to park on the side of the road be extremely careful, there is NO lighting ( again located between civilization and Miccosukee casino). I remember coming to this place as a kid with my parents and liking it very much. Decades later I visited again, and the food was just ok. I ordered the chicken and spare rib combo. Both the ribs and chicken were tasty and well cooked and so were my fries. The BBQ beans though were just a few beans swimming in too much sauce. My waitress was very friendly and efficient. She was definitely the highlight of my visit for lunch. A lot of other reviewers have complained about the loud salsa music, but luckily they were playing country music at a comfortable level when I went. I would have given this place three stars, but the fact that when I went to pay they had a sign that said "Credit card machine is temporarily down" with an ATM machine conveniently placed right next to the cashier was SHADY as hell. Credit cards have become a way of life in this society, and management should know that if your credit card machine is broken, the wait staff should tell customers ahead of them placing their order and eating their meal. This place is outdoors, and the cashier is inside. So there was no way of knowing the machine was down until you go inside to pay for your meal. Luckily the cashier tried the machine for me to see if it worked, and it did, but had it been stuck with pulling money out of that overpriced ATM I would've been a very unhappy camper. read more

The waiter was very indifferent and the food was not that good we had to wait a very long time and my wife's churrasco was cold upon arrival. People SMOKING next to us. My wife requested a corn on the cob and the waiter said they were out while we watched several tables close to us that arrived after us received the same items we were denied. I went to pick up take-out and ordered alligator bites, frog legs, and rack baby back ribs with sides. I was told it would take about 12-15 minutes so I went back to the car. I was surprised when they came out and delivered it to me in the car. Yes, we were the tourists who needed to try the food in the area! It was our first time eating alligator and it was very tasty. My kids loved it! The frog legs were delicious as well and were the best we've ever had. Both appetizers were lightly battered and seasoned well. We went for the first time on 12/4/22 at around 2pm for lunch all seemed well until we got the high bill, the buss boy came back to say we needed to pay cash because there credit card reader was out of order. I noticed we were over charged big time, the recept was blurry and crumbled up and hard to read, and he took it with him. also he talked alot to distract us from noticing the change returned to me was way way less. Once I realized we were home and we live far from there. First time coming here and wow. The energy was so lively. I went on a Sunday and it was packed but so much outdoor seating under the cabana was available I was seated right away. The music was flowing and everyone was dancing in their seats (if they weren't already standing up and dancing haha) the beers came quick and at a decent price. The alligator ribs were $20 and it was actually a lot of meat with a nice light Smokey flavor. The Pulled pork... the pulled port was I believe $13 and it was a lot and it was the best Pulled pork I've had in Miami. I always check out BBQ joints and this pulled pork definitely wins hands down. So juicy and flavorful. I didn't even have to put the BBQ SAUCE on it. The natural flavor was enough. The French fries had a PERFECT crisp with a soft center. The cooks know what they're doing. Nothing is more memorable than a smell, a scent. The first thought that comes to my mind is regarding the smell of the freshly "re-paved street/parking lot". But I guess, in time, that will be gone. The place is extremely casual, true to its name. I had gator bites for the first time. Since I cannot compare with any previous experience this is what i think: flavor wise they are quite mild, although they are fried. I tried all of the four sauce available.
