Perfect place to meet before or after the symphony/play/ballet/musical or whatever brings you to the Dallas theatre district. Plenty of Guinness flowing, but my favorite was a German beer--Kölsch. My SO and I came here at the end of a very busy Saturday night. Several tables were closing out so we only waited for a few minutes for a table. I thought the atmosphere was kinda cool but all the TVs and the light from said TVs kinda took away from the ambiance a bit. I was excited to try this place having come from a service industry life and mostly only working in Irish pubs in the area, also owned by an Ireland to Dallas transplant. The reviews also gave me some hope. When we sat down just before 7 PM, the first server took a while to come over to our table (she was training-I get that.. it takes time). When they finally came over, she didn't even introduce herself, nor her trainee. Server names are important to build a rapport and also to know who to ask for or even to write their name in for a review. The entire pub emptied out pretty quickly. So did the servers. The bartender that evening was awesome - he was more attentive to our table than the servers, delivering the beers to our table because of long ticket times. At some point, I'm guessing, our servers changed because only one person was left on the floor taking care of the tables - but she was too busy rolling silverware and doing her side work to really do anything else. I witnessed a few tables that had joined consistently looking around because they were waiting for menus, beverages, and to order - similar to us. It was never mentioned to us that the tab was getting switched over. We had no idea who our server was. It seemed very disorganized. We finally ordered our food. I got the Shepard's Pie with fries and my SO got the wings (IPA and Guinness BBQ). IPA was decent, the Guinness BBQ just tasted like over sauces bbq wings. Nothing special. The Shepard's pie was just okay. It wasn't terrible but wasn't that exciting - and I love Shepard's pie. I'll always order it if it's on a menu, even if it's Texas summer. I don't even care. I'd likely not order this one again. The meat filling was lackluster. The potatoes were good. And according to my SO, the fries were pretty authentic European style 'chips'. I like them but would have been more impressed if the food came out to us all hot. The only thing that came out hot was my Shepard's pie, everything was lukewarm. Timing for food in the kitchen should be looked at - OR alternate story, servers run food on time (this could have been the cause too). We ate. We order another drink - Stella. Which took our server approximately 15 minutes to tell us they were out. Harp was ordered. Took another 10 minutes for the server to drop it off (on the edge of the table behind my SO's arm while he was eating-I moved it away so he wouldn't bump it off the table). The guy training actually came through and cleared our plates and even saw that we were looking around for a server. Not really knowing the system (I was paying attention.. it took him a while to print the ticket) he got us our bill and even managed to close us out without the other servers around.. at all. It's beyond me that the only person left visible on the floor is the one person who is still learning everything. I made sure to double check our bill, sure enough that Stella we ordered and they were out of was on our ticket. I would understand that being forgotten if they were busy, but in a haste to leave is not a reason forget something so mundane. We almost paid for it.. so if you decide to try this place out and make your own judgement on it, at least make sure to double check your bill at the end, especially if there seems to be a changing of the guard. I originally was going to give this place a 3 star, but the more I wrote, the more I realized it has a lot of work before it even gets to that. The only person that gets a high score here is the bartender. It'd take a lot of convincing to get me to try this place again. read more

Been here about 8 times over the last month as I am working in the area. I am glad to have found a place that feels so welcoming and warm! The food is very good and the service is great for a place that is so young and new in this neighborhood. Robin always acts like her best friends have just arrived, and Allison creates a chill, easy tone to the whole place. Wes pours great drinks and is a pleasure to talk to. Friendly staff but this pub can be very crowded. Reasonable parking lot nearby as is the Meyerson. We stopped for a sip but will come back to try some flights and shepherds pie. Alison is the manager and she is terrific. read more

Nice redo of this former upscale wine bar restuarant location near Dallas' Arts District with outside terrace suited to cooler evenings. Menu seems to be in keeping with legit Irish pubs enhanced with local fresh produce like avocados. All served well in time for a quick bite before the theater, but doesn't take reservations for less that 10 so watch out on busy nights. read more

Ate there on a Wednesday evening before going to a show at the Winspear. Arrived at 6:00 PM & the place was packed (looked like mostly an after-work crowd drinking) so ate on the patio. Despite being so busy, service was fast & friendly. Shared fish & chips. Though server claimed it to be a large serving that would easily feed two, the three fish pieces were not really that large. Very tasty, crispy, hot and fresh though. Good fish. Fries a little bit soggy but not too bad. Because we weren't full we had the bread pudding desert. Now THAT was a large serving! Nice and hot with whipped cream on top. A tad bit dry though. Overall a pretty good place to grab a bite before a show, especially considering the surprising dearth of choices within walking distance of the theaters there. read more

This restaurant is owned by the same people who own the crafty Irishman. So if you're looking for something different from that don't come here it's the same. The food is still good but I did have to send back the boneless wings as they were hard as a rock. The manager took them back to the kitchen and was told they were the last of them and that's why. I thought by now, the Playwright would have its sea legs settled, but maybe not quite yet. Service was friendly, but uneven. There might be a hostess up front, but there didn't seem to be anyone assigned to greet anyone in our 1.5 hour (more in that in a minute) visit. Patrons would wander in from the west/street entrance, sometimes from the south/driveway entrance, but there was no rhyme or reason to how they were seated. We watched couples get turned away while open two-tops sat languishing, while larger groups huddled around recently-vacated tables marking their territory. An older couple walked in and independently sat down immediately, while a cute twosome was abruptly told that the only seats were outside. Confusing, to say the least, and certainly needs to be worked out to avoid patron conflict. The waiter was friendly but harried, disappearing for long periods of time, the checking on us multiple times in the span of only a few minutes. He seemed to have only perfunctory knowledge of the menu, so we simply made life easy and settled on pub standards, like shepherd's pie and fish and chips. They were, sincerely, delicious and well-received, albeit 52 minutes after order placement. Let me repeat that: 52 minutes after the order was placed, the food was delivered to the table. That's important if you are planning to come here before a show. Mind you, the place was mostly full, but no more busy than any other popular restaurant on a Saturday night. Seems to be a choke in the flow somewhere, but I'm sure that experience can correct that. We come to plays/shows/concerts monthly, and are in downtown regularly for other events. This is absolutely a place I will try again, as we enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, the spirit selection, and even the price. I hope they will nail down turnover time and clear up the hostess issue to make this a spectacular experience that will build a repeat customer base. read more

So great! We live down the street so it's awesome to have a tasty and affordable place to eat! They have great happy hour prices, plus pretty good specials. This is a much needed breath of fresh air compared to most of the overpriced food in the Arts district. You won't feel like you're eating cheap though - healthy portions and delicious food, and it's not just grubby pub fare (although they do that well too!) I'm a vegetarian and love their salads and sides. There's even live musicians some nights, which is a nice touch. Only downside - it's a small place so it can get quite noisy on weekends. The service has improved too, first time wasn't great - but our last few times in were spot on. Even got free beers twice so far! My fiancée and I have already become regulars :) read more

We came here for brunch and were pleasantly surprised. I got the breakfast tacos and they were delicious. The service was great, even though it was busy.
