First, the service. We arrived near 6PM. The place was near empty. On a Saturday night, date night, when most restaurants in the area are slammed and full. But the service was very good. The server did a great job. But the food is way, way overpriced for what you get, for the low quality that it is. I ordered the Cod...it came back under-cooked, and it smelled fishy, not fresh. I turned it away and asked the server to bring me just a hamburger, as we were pressed for time. They brought me a simple hamburger and it tasted good but it cost $12! What a rip off! My wife and I ate here with a friend. The service was prompt, the waitress friendly. We had a pretzel appetizer, I ate the roast duck, my wife and her friend shared the Bianca pizza. The duck leg I had was very dark in color, but had a very good flavor. The cabbage and mashed potatoes that came with it were both tasty, and the lingonberries added a touch of sweetness. The pizza was large, easily enough for two to share, and had a pleasant combination of flavors. It wasn't crowded, but it being Super Bowl Sunday might have had something to do with that. The only hiccup was that they were out of Pepsi from the drink fountain, but they had bottles on hand as a backup. Since the pizza was being shared, they brought extra Parmesan cheese and hot pepper flakes. The prices were average to high, so this won't become an every week place for us, but I expect we will return. read more

Why do chef Kevin Hermann and The Porch (both at Schenley and Siena) not get more press and play in Pittsburgh? I ask myself this every year as I thumb through the same old tired bunch that make Pittsburgh Magazine's best restaurant list. (More like best advertisers.) I wonder, too, every time I pay too much money for too little creativity as I peruse yet another copycat menu while seated in an overpriced East End restaurant with no parking. The answer is I am not sure, but I think it might have something to do with Eat-N-Park or, more accurately, Parkhurst, and the persistent and pernicious elitism that exists within foodie circles regarding corporate restaurants. As a devotee of all thinks porcine, and, hence, delicious, I hereby give my testimony, with the zeal that only a Southern girl can have with regard to pork, that the BBQ cornbread slider currently on the menu at The Porch is a holy experience. Or perhaps I should say "wholly", as in wholly delicious in both preparation and presentation. Absolutely melt-in-your-grateful-mouth pork shoulder is smothered in a from scratch barbecue sauce and served open face over a cornbread so moist it just barely qualifies as bread and could really squeak by as a corn pudding. A gorgeous cap of carrot slaw adds a dash of color and tang that perfectly offsets the sweetness of the barbecue sauce. Paired with the watermelon-strawberry-mint gazpacho, it makes for a delightful summer supper, as I had it, or a wonderful appetizer to be shared by all. I will sum up here and go on the record testifying that this barbecue slider is not your average barbecue slider, and Kevin Hermann is not your average chef. When it comes to originality, he is most certainly leading the pack of local chefs and knocking it out of the Park--literally and figuratively. Pittsburgh Magazine take note. read more

I always find myself with a "meh" attitude after dining here. I have been for lunch several times (haven't tried dinner) but find the menu to be mostly pizza and salad and not relaxing. You order at a counter and your food is brought to you. It feels odd because if you need a refill or alcohol you have to find a server who usually isn't coming around. This is one of those places that I only go to if someone else suggests it, which is how I ended up here yesterday for an early dinner. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The calamari appetizer was tasty and my roast beef sandwich was good and filling. This was probably the best experience I've had here, but it still just isn't worth it to me. The food and service are just mediocre for the price. It's also just so...boring. Minimalist aesthetic in a half full (or empty, depending on your world view) strip mall in the suburbs. There's also one of those small luxury housing developments next to it where all the houses look exactly the same. A great new addition to Upper St. Clair. My friends and I came for brunch here on Saturday. The restaurant is pretty big with the outdoor patio being a nice option during the summer. We started off with some donuts. They are fresh, warm, and a great way to start brunch. My one friend did say that her donuts were a little overcooked. I had the special omelet of the day, which had salmon in it. My friends had the quiche and breakfast sandwich. All our portions were quite large and filling. My omelet was very good. The english muffin was a bit chewy and thick, so I only had half of it. The field greens were very peppery. Overall, the meal was not outstanding, but a nice change for breakfast in the area. read more

My mother seems to love this place so i thought id finally check it out. We ordered the buffalo chicken pizza and she got her favorite; the porch burger, i think it was called. There was a " mix up" with how they cook a "medium" done burger. They fixed it and then the manager took it off the bill and talked to us. That was very nice, my mom can be tough to please but it was pretty much raw. Thats her favorite burger as she claims. The waiter was very friendly but kind of inexperienced, they weren't super busy and the service was just a little slow. I was a little disappointed with pizza, it wasn't terrible but maybe im just used to a different style of the pizza. Would definitely go back. read more

We stopped here for dessert one evening and we were extremely underwhelmed. They had a good selection of different dessert options and each were supposedly homemade. We ordered the tiramisu and the NY cheesecake but we were not impressed with either. Both were dry and essentially tasteless, neither seemed homemade. The server was tough to find most times. The sign said they closed at 11 p.m. but they started vacuuming around 8:45 p.m. This was very distracting as it was right by our table. This place has decent food but the staff has an attitude. I met a friend here for lunch. I stood at the hostess stand for a while, as the woman behind another counter continuously made eye contact and could see I was waiting, however proceeded to ignore me. Finally she came over in a huff and asked if she could help me. I felt it was quite obvious that I was waiting for a table. She asks if I had been there before (I had several years prior) then goes "well I don't know if you remember from last time, but you seat yourself". It was like she had me wait there forever to teach me some kind of lesson! Why do they have a hostess stand if it's seat yourself? Anytime I've been to a seat yourself restaurant they have the "please seat yourself sign". Then the servers keep walking past us and finally I grab someone to order to which she responds that I am to order up front. Now why wouldn't the First Lady tell me that?! Plus is was there a little after this incident and they DID have a hostess and servers that took your order. This was also for lunch. Just rubbed me the wrong way. read more

Went for brunch. Atmosphere and décor was pleasant and clean. Menu was very limited and a bit pricy, which is ok. We expected the food to be of appropriate quality and portion for the price. Waitress was timely at first with a greeting and water for the table. Wait time for food and portion sizes were fair. The food came to the table via food delivery person not the waitress which is fine. The food had barely landed on the table when the waitress peeped over the diving wall and asked if everything was ok? Hadn't even had a chance to pick up our forks yet. The food was cold and tasteless with the exception of the pickled vegetables that came with one of the meals. All you could taste of the pickled vegetables was the pickling solution. The waitress never returned to check on us or offer refills of beverages. She returned to drop off the bill. She was very pleasant when she did interact with us. On our way out several staff members were congregated at the hostess station, not a single one said thank you, please come again, have a good day, hope you break a leg or jump off a bridge. Not a single acknowledgement that we were in proximity even though all 3 people in our party said "thank you, have a wonderful day" as we passed and exited. Wow! I loved coming here for brunch on a Sunday afternoon with my friend. I have been to the one downtown before, but have yet to try this one right up the street from me! It's not super upscale, but it's a fancier appeal than most restaurants in the area. I enjoyed the decor. The menu has a great variety of items and also has a nice cocktail selection. Iced coffee wasn't on the menu, but they made me a glass, no problem. That was very nice. I ordered the eggs benedict with a side of bacon. OMG it was some of the best I've had in town. Loved it!! My friend ordered the breakfast sandwich and she enjoyed her meal as well. That was my second option I was thinking of ordering and it appeared to be delicious. The portion sizes are nice too, where you will definitely be leaving full! The staff was very friendly as well. I was apprehensive to come due to mixed reviews, but I will definitely be back to try out dinner and drinks one nice-especially once the weather gets warmer and we can sit on the nice "porch" that they have outside :) read more

Tonight was our first time there...NOT impressed! They really need to step up their game...I chose the grilled chicken farm salad, the greens and fixings were crisp and fresh as expected tossed with a light vinaigrette that was perfect. Portion was generous. The chicken didn't appear to be grilled and instead tasted like the frozen variety that was microwaved...it actually tasted like reheated chicken with little or no seasoning. My partner chose the shrimp and grits...he said it was just OK. The grits appeared pasty and the sauce that accompanied the shrimp was sparse..the shrimp appeared to be overcooked! We needed a place to eat after an appointment in the area. I did some research before hand and looked at the menu for several restaurants. The menu for the Porch at Siena looked great. My wife and I arrived at 5:00 PM, and were seated immediately.the decor is very nice. We were greeted by our server Michelle promptly, as she brought water for both of us. She asked if we had been there before, which we had not. She explained the menu and asked if we had any questions. She gave us some recommendations as well. My wife ordered the Wagu Burger, and I had the Beef Dip. I liked that we had many options for our sides. My wife got the Fire Fly Fries which Michelle recommended, which were awesome. I had a Caesar Salad as my side. My wife and I shared our sides. All of the food was delicious, and well presented. We were only able to eat half of our meals, and got containers to take the remaining food home to enjoy another day. Michelle asked us if we would like a dessert, and explained that all of the desserts were made in house. It sounded great, but we just didn't have room for more. Everything is reasonably priced. I highly recommend The Porch of Siena, and many thanks to Michelle for making our meal so great. We will definitely be back, possibly for Brunch as Michelle suggested. read more
