Overrated big time. Menu is not very descriptive, fairly bad service, crack heads ouside the door, and very bland food. I will give it one more shot but the first impression is pretty bad. read more

I tried The Porter for the first time the other night and had a great experience. We had no problem being seated and our server was very helpful. The beer list was extensive with a wide range of beers and, unlike many high-end pubs, a lot of the selections are reasonably priced (still, if you're just looking to get a pitcher of Miller Lite this isn't the place for you). While the food isn't dirt cheap ($9-$10 per entree), it isn't overpriced and is well worth it. I had the reuben, which was solid, and the garlic and herb fries, which were outstanding. Yum! Food was certainly worthy of 5 stars, but service was a little slow though very friendly. Great beer list (aged beer is a fun novelty, although neither of us were especially into it) in an energetic pub environment. We ordered the heirloom tomato salad with basil, fresh cheese, and preserved lemon and quickly realized that we were in for way more than your typical pub fare...it was a flavor explosion! For the main course, the pork chop was perfectly moist, and the accompanying mashed potatoes and gravy were tasty accompaniments. The desserts are tiny (and who really wants more than a few bites, anyway?!) yet delicious...try the peach cobbler with chestnut strudel. Wish we spent more time in Atlanta so we had a reason to go back! read more

The outside of this bar is deceiving but once you're inside and walk past the bar to the back restaurant it's pretty cool. Took my staff there for dinner and they all enjoyed their food. One had the hamburger and said it was very good. Two of us had the short ribs with the kimchi but didn't realize it was a sandwich on a roll and was extremely spicy. Neither one of us could eat it all because it was very spicy and the short rib just wasn't what we expected so little disappointing. The short rib was shredded and a little chewy. Just OK. The other had the porn dog which was huge ha ha. He said it was really good very very good. We had the truffle garlic fries as an appetizer. Those were tasty. Also had the chicken wings as an appetizer or but they were not crispy but flavorful. We all have this side of macaroni and cheese which was really yummy. The beer was good. The service was good. Oh, Yelp, how I've neglected you in the holiday season. My deepest apologies are extended to my fellow yelpers. And now on to the Porter. I'm really diggin' this spot. It's closer than the Brickstore for Atlanta dwellers, even if it is kinda small. As the name implies, the beer selection is where it's at. Though I'd like a few more draft ales on the menu, I understand that the Porter specializes in Belgian and Belgian-style brews. For the love of god, when you're at the Porter, order the calimari. It comes with some very delicious fried lemon slices and is really stellar. The spent-grain bread is a delight as well, but I'm pretty sure it is a special. Everything else on the menu sounds and smells amazing, though I can only vouch personally for the things I mentioned above. Though it doesn't seem to "fit" in L5P, I love that it's there and hope the Porter helps L5P move (at least a little bit further) into adulthoood. read more

This is a swanky little place to get beer and American food, but with a twist! They have pages and pages of beer, ale, Yeager, and ciders! Whether you're a novice beer drinker or an expert you'll love this place. Not only do they have a great beer selection, but their food is great!! I ordered their name sake Half Pound Cheeseburger with Herb Fries. The burger was juicy, cheesy and the bun was perfect! I'm not really a pickle person so I got mine on the side, but since they were homemade I figured I give them a try. Let me tell you, I would eat a whole jar of them! They were so crispy and delicious! Best pickles I have EVER had! The fries were crispy and flavorful! Each of their menu items comes with a beer suggestion, but I'm not really a beer drinker so I opted for a Crispin. The ambience kind of reminds you of a Scottish pub but with a southern flavor, very nice! I will definitely be coming back to try their other dishes and for those pickles! read more

this place is one of my favorites. it's in my neighborhood, draws my kind of eclectic mix of people, and has quality food and beer! I have been by for dinner a bunch of times now and have the following comments... -Beer List is as good as some of the best beer bars in Atlanta. Brickstore may have a more impressive list, but the list at the Porter is solid and very well priced for the quality of the beer. I need to venture out of my La Couffe comfort zone though. In fact, need to venture out of my belgian comfort zone. -Food is top notch. It's not quite elitest gastro pub sophistication, but straddles the fine line between pub fare and gastro. -The Brat is homemade and delectable. Their side salad that comes with entrees also SOLID. The reuban sandwich and burger are both solid. They have expanded their specials to have a more comprehensive menu, so i recommend going there with any kind of appetite. The atmosphere is certainly divey, but the place is clean. I like how the various props used as the interior decor are a play on the "porter" name - check it out and you will see what i mean. read more

The drinks were the highlight of this place. Skip the shrimp and grits. I think the mushrooms made the grits runny and the shrimp were small and under seasoned. The mussels were okay, too much garlic in my opinion. Pull apart pretzel tasted like buttered white bread. Definitely a place to grab a drink. Maybe I will try other food items next time as people seem to rave about this place. read more

A beer connoisseur, I am not, but I do know what I like & dislike, & I'm definitely down with The Porter! I've tried & finished both the Franziskaner Dunkelweizen beer & the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier... enjoyed both very much. Ironically, I've gone with a large party & the service was spectacular... I mean, they even cleaned our cake tray dish for cryin' out loud! On the flip side, I've gone with a small, intimate group of 4 & our server couldn't have cared less about us. When you have to ask for a glass of water 30 minutes after being seated, there's a problem. In their defense, this place gets PACKED, I mean SLAMMED, on the weekends. Given the narrow hallway in the entrance, getting to the restaurant side of things can be a feat in itself. Personally, I'm a big fan of the food here for the most part. I didn't love the calamari, but that's because most of it was fried lemon peel or fried jalapeno as opposed to fried squid. That said, you can't go wrong with the arugula salad, the garlic french fries, or with any of their sandwiches/burgers... yum-o! The Porter is definitely worth a look see if you're strolling through the L5P area... or if you're simply lookin' for a good place to chillax, eat & grab a brew with the buds! read more

A friend introduced me to this spot in L5P today, and I cannot thank her enough. Two days later and I'm still nursing my post-NYE celebration post-hangover-but-its-all-still-upsidedown-strangeness, so beer was off the menu -- although the selection was extensive, and nicely paired with meals for you. In lieu of beer, I had the best black bean burger of my life! It wasn't some frozen patty thawed on the skillet, but rather a fresh mash of quinoa and black beans, cooked up nicely, and heaped with feta, and topped with tomato, lettuce and onion, served on a delicious aziago roll -- something like aziago or foccacia. What's even better is that the side salad that was served with it was easily the best side salad I've ever had -- with a veggie burger no less! Don't know what was in it (base was arugala), but it was delish. And all for $8.50. Hell ya, I'm going back. Atmosphere was cozy, old-school with lots of raw wood surfaces and old americana artifacts (although it was bordering on too much of a constructed atmosphere/experience). Service was friendly, if a little cordial, and prompt. The place was dead (or at least slow) when I went (1:30pm), but with the tight quarters I could see the experience being a little more cramped and complicated during a crowded evening dinner (which I believe influenced many of the other ratings). I'll stick with brunch/lunch hours. read more

If you're not a huge beer drinker get The ginger vodka lemonade, it'll change your life. the food is unreal and the specials always kickass. definitely try the black bean burger, best i've ever had and get up on some shrimp and grits!!! Always an excellent selection on draft and good service from the bartenders. We drive up here about every 2-3 months or so and it's been the same bartenders working every time and they're always prompt and helpful with making suggestions. I recommend the salt and vinegar popcorn here as a good bar snack while drinking. Definitely will be back. Went here to celebrate my new job. A friend of mine said this was one of her favorite spots. I had a really good drink which consisted of lemonade, vodka, and ginger ale (forgive me for not remembering the name). The menu had so many excellent sounding choices, but I was drawn to one of my favorites: Fish and Chips. I felt bad at first for not being a bit more adventurous with my choice, but then I tasted it and was no longer sorry lol! I'm a big fry person. But it takes some really good fish to make me forget about the fries. And they give you so much! I heard there was parking in the rear of the spot but I couldn't find how to get there and just ended up parking down a side street. I would like to definately come back to try other items! read more

Vast selection of beers with few to none not available (unlike other beer bars that carry large inventory) The non-drinkers (gasp!) we came with enjoyed the draft root beer. Cool space with old exposed brick and lots of woodwork. Water came out in quart mason jars which seemed to make ATL tap water taste even better! read more

Beer selection is great (only reason for 2 stars), wouldn't know about the food - I went with my fiancée on a Friday night and expected to wait a bit. Was told it would be a 30-45 min wait but after 1 1/2 hrs of standing along the wall we decided to go elsewhere when hostess could not give us an estimated time until we were seated (asked at 45mins, 1 hr, and right before we left). Groups of 6 and 8 arrived well after we did and were seated way before we would have. It would have been nice to have a more accurate time estimate as we would have gone elsewhere if we knew it would be that long. Not likely to return- plenty of other places in ATL good beer selection and bar food. read more

The Porter is just the best for a casual, delicious meal and/or drinks any time. The endless, exhaustive, epic beer list is the main draw. But I'm not even a beer drinker, and I still love The Porter. They always have a couple of good creative cocktails available, plus a whole page of unique ciders, as well as a perfunctory wine selection. The vibe is so laid-back, anything-goes, hipster dive bar that I'm always surprised by how amazing the food is. All of it: the standard burger, fries, shrimp and grits, goat cheese fritters, but especially the seasonal specials. I had ravioli with fresh corn, snow peas and oyster mushrooms in a delicious broth on our last visit. And if you just need a snack with drinks, the salt and vinegar popcorn is mouth-watering and addictive. If you're looking for something fancy or quiet, go someplace else. If you just want to eat and drink with friends and be comfortable and satisfied, I can't think of a better place than The Porter. read more

Overly full and we got food poisoning from the food. The specials we got were very strong in flavor. Ordered an Asian noodle dish that was so sour it was hard to eat. However, our waitress was great about taking back our drinks that didn't taste good and she was accommodating about getting us new drinks that we would like. I appreciate that kind of service. The restaurant was freezing because of the fans as well. The servers were nice, but was not happy with the food or the atmosphere. read more

I love this place and go there regularly...the food is flavorful and well made (their fries are my favorite ever ever ever). The price point is dead on perfect and the extensive beer menu is great, considering most places only have like 15-20 drink options. I love knowing theres a place in the neighborhood that is cozy and friendly with a menu that changes...or at least it feels like it does? I've never once waited for a table, no matter how packed they are. Also, The Porter attracts a relatively cool crowd..no obnoxious teens or kids; they're all adults with composure and style.
