Now that it's been open for a couple of years, it's actually possible to get a seat at the bar at the Queen Vic, as long as they're not showing footy! They've lost Adam Stein, their first (and dare I say most ambitious) chef, but the food remains well above your average pub fare with appetizers like fresh oysters and roasted marrow bones, and they're still committed to sourcing their fruits, vegetables, and animal products from local growers, ranchers and fishermen. Personally I'm a fan of the bangers and mash; no instant potatoes here! The Queen Vic also remains one of your best DC sources for British lagers and bitters. Their 16 taps include a cask-conditioned ale (which was from Baltimore's Oliver Breweries when I last stopped by) along with such English standards as Well's Bombardier and Boddington's. For something completely different, try the Monty Python Holy Grail Pale Ale! The icing on the cake? There are another 30 ales, stouts, and ciders in bottles and cans. Oh, and if that wasn't enough to get you to stop in, they've also taken up where Commonwealth left off and offer a Sunday roast (complete with Yorkshire pudding) from 11am till they run out. read more

This bar is awesome. It's not as dingy as some other H Street locations can be. The beer menu is extensive, but I'd pass on the imports and go straight to the beer cocktails. I tried two and they were excellent and really hard hitting. I got the Royal appetizer platter to share, complete with "head cheese" (pork brains) and it was awesome. It sounds gross, but if you spread it on some bread with some mustard, it's really really good. The overall atmosphere was lively and semi-sporty. The staff was attentive and friendly. What a nice pub! If you are in search of a legit English pub, Queen Vic is your place as the food and beers here are on point. I mean, they have your brown HP sauce, malt vinegar on the table and cask ales. The menu is sparse during dinner time but there's a chalkboard with a ton of specials so look up! You should expect some classics like bangers and mash, fried cod, and corn beef. There's also a nice brunch menu as well. Corn beef was delish. Steak was tasty. Fries were decent. Mac and cheese was yummy. Asian wings were mediocre. Didn't care too much for the breaking and then saucing. It makes the wing soggy. Overall, great bar, great food, great service. read more

Awesome place. Menu seems like very traditional British food, our server was friendly and accommodating (although busy at sometimes so it was hard to get his attention). We ordered the poutine - cheese curds, sausage gravy, and fries. Not the most traditional poutine, but who cares? It's an Irish pub. I was slightly worried that it was going to be sausage gravy, but when it came out, it was apparent that it was more like "sausage...with some gravy mixed in". Fish and chips were great, I'm English so the sausages while good (I was told they make them on site) were a bit of a miss for us. The gravy and chips were amazing that came with the sausage though and made up for the shortfall. Our Welsh Rarebit was burnt and slightly disappointing. I did NOT think this place was such a winner. We couldn't get Asian food down the street, so we randomly walked into The Queen Vic because it was open late. So OMG their food was way above pub quality. Fish and chips - huge piece of flaky fish, homemade fries Charcuterie plate - I guess the meats come from a Mennonite family in the area. Unreal. The homemade oat biscuits were so flipping amaze - we asked for me and they brought them complimentary on a plate decorated with fruit. LOVE. Brussel sprouts - of course good. Not the strongest of the bunch, but still good, and had some sort of unique flavor that I think was driven by Thai chili sauce. Portions were massive. We ordered way too much for 3. Server was very nice. Took a little time to get situated and ordered, but once we were rolling our food came out quick. Queen Vic is an authentic English pub with great beer and cool atmosphere. English pubs, at least those abroad, aren't known for their food, and sadly the owners of Queen Vic kept this in mind when they hired a chef. In a word, the food is dreadful. This was the worst meal I've had in months. We had a table with six of my friends and we each ordered different dishes. My softshell crab sandwich was incredibly bland. I slathered it with their spicy tartar sauce, but even that couldn't improve the meal. My girlfriend didn't even finish her sandwich. At least we had the fries to eat. No kitchen can mess up fries, right? My friends ordered butter chicken. It was lukewarm in temperature and lacking in taste. We took to calling the dish rubber chicken and were considering sending it back to the kitchen. Unfortunately, we were running late for a concert next door and there wasn't time. The only redeeming part of the visit was the beer selection. This is a cool place to have a drink with beers from all over Europe and India. It's also a great space with cool decor and even outdoor seating on their back patio. So go for a drink and a cool atmosphere, but you're better off looking elsewhere for food. read more

Despite my initial thinking that this establishment was related to the other Queen Vic and Queen Victoria pubs found in other cities, it is, in fact, not (even though the signage, color-scheme, and decor are quite similar). This is a small-ish (think narrow two-story house) and low-key local neighborhood bar. Which means it feels like a pub should feel. It's personal, it's friendly, it's a place to hang for awhile, and it's good any time of the day. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about beer. Which is just what you want in pub staffers. And the beer list is above average when it comes to the Brit and Irish pub genre. I even had some beers I'd never had before (and that's a big accomplishment). So roll on into here at a random time, cozy up to the bar, try out some different beers, and nosh on some tasty fries. The Queen Vic is one of those places that I'm not 100% sure why I like it but I just really happen to like it. I randomly stumbled into The Queen Vic on a Wednesday night around Midnight, why I picked it I don't even know, probably because I wanted to drink some more and it was the first open door that I came across. There is nothing special at all about the décor of this place, it's your typical divey look bar and I guess British pub, how authentic it is to a real British pub I have no idea but to me it just felt comfortable. The place was far from crowded so I just sat at the bar and enjoyed the atmosphere. Maybe I went on a slow night but the place wasn't too packed and seemed like a place you can sit back and enjoy a drink without worrying about being accosted by some drunken guy or bothered in general. So as far as comfort and atmosphere, The Queen Vic really does it for me. Another reason I like this place is they sell hard cider and I am a fan of hard cider, while I like beer as well, I'm not always a huge fan of the taste of some beers, hard cider gives me the beer like effects with a better tasting drink. The service was cool, I mean there was only one guy, a bartender but he was friendly and didn't hassle me to keep buying drinks. Basically I can't put my finger on it exactly but The Queen Vic is just a place that I really enjoyed myself, maybe it was all the drinks that I had at the place prior but then again maybe there is just something special about this place. Came here to meet a couple of friends for a little informal meeting and drinks. Man, you gotta try their Cardiff Bluebird drink!!! It's one of the best drinks I've had in ages! It's made with hard cider, blueberry vodka and Sprite. Just purely fantastic! The ambience is nice and obviously, popular with the locals because it got packed! I was so excited to learn that DC now has a pub with a proper British menu. Not only do they serve such traditional favorites as bangers and mash, but there's of course a few Indian items to chose from, and a variety of tempting specials. I love a good Sunday roast, so I was excited to try it out, but in the end there were a few off-spots. To start with the good parts, the service was shockingly warm and friendly for a DC eatery. Our waiter gave us excellent suggestions for beer on tap, which I might also add are very reasonably priced. The roast came with green beans and carrots, and they tasted so fresh and crisp. I also enjoyed the potatoes which were cooked in duck fat. There were, however, a few flaws with my dinner. First, my Yorkshire pudding came out stone cold. It was replaced, but the new pudding again was cold. Despite the temperature being off, it was delicious, and clearly was made the correct way with the pan drippings from the roast (quite the rarity in the US), but it was a bit concerning that I could not manage to get a warm pudding. The second temperature issue was the roast beef, which was lukewarm at best. It was served rare, and while I generally love rare beef, Sunday roast is made with a rump roast - not the most tender cut - and serving it rare makes it tough to cut and chew. Had the roast been served medium to medium-well, it would have been more enjoyable. But it certainly was edible (perhaps with a few extra chews) and the gravy was awesome. In all fairness, serving Sunday roast all day is difficult, since the beef and Yorkshire pudding are certainly at their best right out of the oven. However, pubs all over England serve this meal all day and seem to manage, so I'm sure there's a way. Since the service was so friendly and there were some great flavors to my meal (no small feat with a traditional British dinner), I will plan on coming back to try some of their other items. read more

The Queen Vic is probably your best bet for a British-style pub in DC. The food seems like it could have been made across the pond and the beer is served in large sized pints. They even have hard cider on tap! To top it off, almost every tv is turned to either British programming or a football (soccer) game. While the main entrees are pretty good, the best thing we ordered by far was the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Phenomenal. Decided to give the Queen Vic another try. Sadly, still not very impressed. Signage outside and description on the menu stated "Brunch served Saturday and Sunday until 4PM". After being seated at 3:15, however, I was told only the dinner menu was available. There wasn't much on the menu that sounded appealing. So I decided to just get chips and an ice tea (then through in the sticky pudding that I liked last time). Received a generous amount of chips but was still pricey. Sticky pudding not as good as last time. When i noticed my silverware was not clean (yuck!) i brought it to the attention of my server. The server, who was otherwise very nice, brought new silverware but then said I could have just taken silverware from the table next to me. I took this as meaning that she didn't want to be bothered. A group of cousins, coworkers and friends ended up here after not being able to get in to a place down the street. They led us upstairs to the "patio," which ended up being enclosed but perfect for the size of our group of ~10. We ordered some drinks and perused the menu, which was surprisingly small. However, each dish sounded quite authentic for an English Pub! A few people started with an appetizer, and we ordered our meals. I managed to steal a bite of the roasted marrow bones, which were presented on a plate with a few slices of sliced baguette and some sort of garlic parsley mixture. I'd never had roasted marrow bones, but they were quite tasty. The only complaint was the taste of garlic was a bit strong. After what seemed like an eternity, the meals finally came out. Just about everybody at our table ordered the fish and chips, as this was recommended by the server...and when you go to an English pub, I feel like that is the thing to order. As somebody who recently started eating seafood, I was up for trying something new and followed the trend, ordering that too- although, it was a tough decision between that and the curry lamb dish. The fish and chips came out piping hot with several large pieces of fried fish and a plateful of fries, which were well seasoned and quite good. The fish was pretty good too, but I'm not sure I would order it again. It was just too much fried food for my liking. The gnocchi was really good. It didn't look like a huge portion, compared to my fish and chips but my cousin said it was just enough. I believe it was served with diced squash. I also tried (what I think was called) the steak and ale pie. It resembled a pot pie, with a stew made of steak, veggies and ale, covered by a layer of thin pastry dough. It was by far the best thing I tried that night! The Queen Vic is on the verge of 4 stars (I wish I could give it 3.5), but with the long wait time and my fish and chips I just couldn't splurge. So I've bookmarked this place for the past 2 years! Why did I wait so long to come here?? My wife and I went to Britain and have been craving that fish and chips with mushy peas. That mushy peas is IMPORTANT!!! They delivered and then some! That fish was huge! Just like how it's done in the U.K. And that mushy peas is seriously delicious. They add a kick of curry to it. We also had the sausage and rabbit pie. That freaking pie was so delicious. That crust is pure money! And then there was huge chunks of rabbit and meat! What's best is that they really have an eye for detail. Their rabbit is not just any rabbit. It's local! And they said that getting it local is the ONLY way to get that flavor. That's amazing! Also their harps lager is delicious. I wish more places sold harps lager. The decor is beautifully dark and cozy and you really feel like your in some bar on the U.K. Get that rabbit pie! Came here on a whim after perusing all the eateries on H street. I just wasn't in a pie mood and was too late to get into Toki Underground. My husband has pretty conventional taste & I figured he'd like to try some Bangers & Mash. Long story short: the Bangers and Mash were sublime, the Butter Chicken I ordered was solid comfort and the Sticky Toffee putting sent me over the moon! Even better, we learned that everything is made in house and that they try to use local ingredients. The service was friendly & efficient and it wasn't too loud & obnoxious like a certain other bar that we left without ordering earlier that night. Normally I'd like that fresh approach, but Hake doesn't work imho. Now I know to ask what kind of fish before ordering. I just assumed a Brittish Pub - with 4 stars Yelp (gotta check beforehand :) would have killer Fish & Chips. Normally I try to eliminate personal preferences in my review to be fair, but honestly it just didnt' taste good. and there were a few missed notes here. Prices are good. Servers are good. I feel like I've been missing out by visiting the Queen Vic and ordering classic British pub food like fish & chips. I had no idea that the kitchen at this restaurant turns out absolutely amazing food at reasonable prices. Thankfully, a friend's birthday dinner gave me an opportunity to try a whole bunch of amazing dishes. Without the crowds associated with a major soccer game, Royal wedding or Wimbledon, this place is great for a group dinner. A fried green tomato with goat cheese was crispy and surprisingly light and perfect for summer. The heavier gnocchi and lamb was so rich and flavorful I could have licked the plate. And the steak with creamy mashed potatoes, cauliflower and asparagus was perfectly cooked and truly wonderful. Sure, we finished up the night with sticky toffee pudding and homemade donuts like we always do - but why miss out on a classic? I can't wait to go back to the Queen Vic to order more specials from the kitchen. They're going to have to get used to me being a regular - and ordering all of the Boddington's on tap. read more

Ah, Vic, I want to love you. Truly. But I can't. I know the Brits aren't known for gastronomic excellence, but the best thing about the bangers and mash was the mash. Perfect fluffy, starchy goodness w/sauce. How it's possible to make a sausage taste like nothing is beyond me. Only in UK-themed bars on H Street, I guess. Tap was respectable. DC United had some promotion/charity shindig staffed by interns, so that made the crowded pub feel a little uncomfortable. I rarely do updates, but 3 updates is unheard of. I think its mainly because I want Queen Vic to do well and for the most part, with regard to the atmosphere, the serving staff and the alcohol, its decent. Its the food that's lacking. For my third trip back (which was several weeks ago - again for Sunday brunch) I ordered the cornmeal pancakes. They were served lukewarm, but more importantly, they were dry. I ate them anyway but was not satisfied. A buddy of mine ordered the Sunday Roast Special (this time poultry). He wasn't too impressed with it and when I asked him if I could try it to compare it to the beef I'd had a while back, I found it to be almost as tough to chew as the beef. Really, there's just no excuse for this. Its a shame the food isn't very good (with the one notable exception of the Fish & Chips). I've given this resto waaaaaay more tries than I normally would. Hopefully QV can improve, but I won't be going back. P.S. My other pet peeve about The Queen Vic is: How come no Bangers and Mash on the brunch menu? Maybe its just as well since I've read other reviews that said the sausage was flavorless, but how is it that a British Pub doesn't serve B&M on a Sunday afternoon? read more

This bar is more ny style--not too crowded, laid back feel. I hung out with a few friends upstairs, which isn't too big. The decor on the walls is really bold and inspiring (well the ones about queen vic, not the sports ones) I tried the lamb ragout because it was recommended. I wasn't too impressed. The lamb seemed overcooked and wasn't all that tasty. The service wasn't the best that night. We were told by one waiter we were allowed to sit at a table, but then scolded by another one that we needed to order an actual entree instead of just small plates or we couldn't be there. Meanwhile there were two open tables right next to us. Overall a pretty average experience! read more

I live in this 'hood and have been to the Vic on a number of occasions, none of them worthy of any review (positive or negative). Finally I realized I should just go ahead and review the place, so these examples are from this past Saturday. Pros: They show DC United games on the big screen on the upstairs back porch. They have cider on tap. The chips (fries) are pretty solid. I tried something called 'devils on horseback' that involved meat wrapped around cheese-stuffed dates. Those were awesome. Cons: Notoriously unreliable service. Our friend got there first, and had ordered a cup of tea. It took ONE HOUR for him to get this cup of tea. An hour. Literally. As for the rest of us (there were three others with me).... It took us almost 15 minutes to be given menus, then another 10 to order drinks, then another 10 or so until our drinks came out. Our waiter brought water, too, which was great because he never took a second drink order. It was honestly kind of ridiculous. Then we waited about 10 minutes to order food, then another 20 before it came out. I get that our water was running around and taking care of the entire upstairs, but we barely got a food order in, despite arriving almost an hour before the kitchen closed. Our food order wasn't taken until 10:50, and only because I waved my hands around wildly to get his attention. A different person brought out our food, so we weren't able to order a second round of drinks from him, and our server came back to give us napkins, but didn't stick around long enough to hear everyone at the table ask for another round of drinks. So, for the 2.5 hours I was at the Vic on Saturday, I had ONE drink and shared some fries. I actually had to stand up and track down our waiter to get the check. Also, and this isn't from this past weekend, but I've had the fish and chips, and would recommend that everyone avoid them. I've had better fish at Horace & Dickey's around the corner. read more

I just had the best doughnuts I've ever had in my nearly 31 years of living. I was expecting doughnut holes with some dipping sauces, but no my friends, these were two fairly large, piping hot doughnuts drizzled in brown sugar and creme. No brainer. My partner had the fish and chips. The portion of fish they served was huge, crispy, and lightly greased. The hand-cut chips/fries were hot and seasoned perfectly (not too salty, which can ruin fries to a point of no return). Downstairs where we sat, we had 4 TVs with the NFL ticket, and they were even nice enough to turn the Browns on for me, major brownie points (heh heh, see what I did there?) The Vic is the Cheers of H Street. If you visit often, they will know your name. I have had some of the best food experiences of my life at the Vic. They once introduced ceveche to me, believe it or not. And 28 day dry aged steak --- not mention a whole snapper one summer when they were in season. You never know what you are gonna get. Went there today for the first time. Really not too bad, but it didn't blow me away by any means. I ordered a cider, which was good (if a bit pricey at $7-plus). My food order was "The Full Monty," a full English breakfast. As it's one of the few things I know I like when I'm in the British Isles, I've had this a bunch of times. Here is a breakdown of the elements here: Egg: perfect Bacon: more like a pork chop piece--back bacon would have been better Sausage: very disappointing--I was hoping for one of those really soft lamb sausages; this one tasted more like a giant US sausage link Breads: the black bread kind of tasted odd; no toast; interesting butter-soaked bread that kind of reminded me of garlic bread without the garlic Puddings: none Tomato: fried slice--not bad, but I've more often seen a fried small whole tomato Beans: the most disappointing part. The beans were undercooked and appeared to be sauced with ketchup. Even baked beans out of a can would have been a huge improvement My daughters shared the cornmeal pancakes, which were very, very good. My wife ordered the fish and chips, which appeared to be ok. Wouldn't likely go again, especially for the price. I think our total bill (before tip) was $49. While that isn't highway robbery, it's about 10-20% more expensive than I would have hoped for. read more

Probably the best staff on H Street, and the food is (mostly) quite good. On rare occasions they miss the mark, but often that's because they're taking risks that most bars avoid. Only thing that prevents this from being my default destination is, ironically, the beer. I love a pint of Fuller's as much as the next guy, and when the Old Speckled Hen is on nitro, it's quite drinkable. But there are too many taps given over to marketing experiments by the Big Breweries. And what keeps the QV from being a "true" pub: they should seriously consider sourcing "real" ale from a local brewer. Sure, the pub's goal is to offer a wide selection of "UK Beers", and it's a near logistical impossibility to have casks shipped from England, but real ale is not an international commodity like Guiness, it's a locally produced item like bread, or a potato. The QV is proud of sourcing local ingredients for their food, they should be sourcing some of their beer locally too. Don't care where* but a pub is a place where you can get a pint of bitter from a beer engine. No cask, it's not a pub. :) *DC has three breweries now, and Oliver's in Baltimore specializes in English-style ales. read more

First ever review I'm writing on Yelp, and my experience with The Queen Vic is what prompted it... Came here during the first week of the "soft-opening" and had the Rarebit, all of the Charcuterie and the bone marrow - and all were FANTASTIC. The Potted Duck and Foie Gras on the charcuterie were my favorites as was the rarebit. I had the half beef/lamb burger for my entree and it was perfectly cooked and all around delicious. The owner was chatting up my buddy and I and was kind of enough to give us another potted duck on the house - classy. Beer list was excellent and had plenty of beers that were foreign to me (a huge plus in my book) The following weekend I decided to take some friends of mine to another restaurant on H Street, and to kill time waiting for our table I said we should go to this sweet new Brittish pub dow the street. Stood around inside and had beers and my friends were all impressed. After a while we grew tired of waiting for our table at the other place, so we put in an order for a lot of food ($80 or so), and just as I signed my check we get the call that our table is ready. I explain the situation to the batender and owner - there was an issue with getting a refund on my credit card, so he he gives me his business card saying "come back and we'll take care of you". Fast forward a month - I decide to go back hoping to use my "credit" at QV. Not only does the bartender remember me and the whole situation, the owner comes up to me with a handshake and thanked me for coming back - and sure enough my date and I ate/drank $80 worth of beers, burgers, chips, and charcuterie. Just awesome. This place is associated with a really terrible date for me, despite the fact that we didn't even eat there. But I had heard good things, so I decided to give it a try. This date was fantastic (does it still count as a date if my mom was there? Queen Vic would have approved!). Previous Yelp posts suggest the fish and chips are to die for. True story. Flakey, delicious, yum yum yum. The fries were my kind of fries, thick and crispy, potato-y on the inside. The best part is the homemade tartar sauce, which is really more of a mustardy, garlicky, guilty pleasure. I could bathe in the stuff. Boyfriend had the seafood stew which was light and yummy, although might not have been enough for a big man like him if he hadn't had the opportunity to eat half of my fries (and half of my mom's, too). Also, it was really pretty, which counts for a lot in my book. Our waitress was just the nicest. Knew lots about the menu and spent plenty of time with us, made us feel happy we were there. She knew the beer menu inside and out, and gave us some nice recommendations and tastes. I think I'll make this a regular spot. Gotta try every beer cocktail! read more

For my money, it doesn't get much better than the Queen Vic if you want a good British pub-experience in DC. It's not upscale, but it's no dive either. I've always been incredibly satisfied with any food item I've ordered here, from the specials to the standards, including the beef patties they serve late at night. And if you're looking for something a little less pricey, check out their weeknight specials...they always have something good at a discount, from curry and chips to pork chops and kraut. Yes, it can seem a little pricey for pub food, but the quality matches. The beer selection is top-notch (the only place I've ever seen Bellhaven on tap!!!), and the bartenders and servers are friendly folks who seem to love what they do. This is a great place to not only go out with a group of friends, but also to take your parents when they come to visit. read more

I live in DC and I had a friend come in town that was originally from England so I thought it would be cool to go. They don't take reservations which is eh, so they told me when to come to accommodate our party, we had a party of 8. The service was blah, the bartender upstairs I guess was in charge of the whole upstairs. He just wasn't attentive at all. The atmosphere was great and the menu was great. My food came out warm-cold. I was hungry so I didn't say anything. Service could have been a little better and then he overcharged my friend at the end when we split all the checks up. I would go back for the food, I wouldn't expect excellent service if I went back. Drinks were also really good! I had a cider with blueberry vodka and sprite. read more
