We came up to Lake Almanor from the Sacramento area and stopped at the Ranch House because of the reviews on Yelp. They did not disappoint. I had a pulled pork sandwich without the roll and a salad and red cabbage and apple slaw as sides. Food was great and loved how it was presented. We went back today for lunch and I feel compelled to update this review. The waitress spilled ice tea on our table and never bothered to come back to clean it up even after making a comment about spilling it. Food was just as good as last time. We get our bill and we are looking it over only to see that it is $86 for two people, we had two ice teas ($6) an order of wings ($14), fish and chips ($14) and the 1/2 pound ranch house burger ($15) with onion rings (+$2) for a total of $51 plus tax. When we brought this to the attention of our waitress we could see the wheels turning so she went back and re-added it for a total of $56.41. We pay the bill with cash and leave a $10 tip on the table, as we are getting ready to leave the parking lot the waitress comes out to the parking lot and asks us why we did not leave her a tip to which we replied that we left her tip on the table to which she replied "oh I didn't see it". The bill could have been a simple mistake but I would be sure to pay close attention if you go here. read more

Maybe it was the weather but I just didn't get a good vibe here. The hostess/bartender was really, really loud and, while friendly enough, was pretty preoccupied with her friend at the bar. When a few more folks showed up to drink, we never saw her again. Burgers were overdone. Felt like a locals-only show. I'll give it a try again in the summer, though. read more

Our puppy had a late afternoon appointment at the Chester Veterinary Clinic (Dr. Roberta is 5 star!) on a Friday. After the appointment my wife and I decided to check out the Ranch House. We are very glad we did. Shannon, Jamie and the Team did not let us down. The hospitality, beverages, loaded curly fries and hot wings were just what we needed. After relaxing for a bit, we looked into the dinner menu and split an order of shrimp scampi that came with white clam chowder. The meal was AWESOME! It's not often that I feel compelled to write a bad review. But this is one of those times. After spending a few days camping in Lassen, we made our way to Lake Almanor for some more R & R and thought we would start out with a good meal. After seeing the good reviews, we decided to try The Ranch House. It was a quiet Wednesday evening. From the outside, it looks old, but often times these places have great food. This wasn't the case. After going inside, the place was moderately busy with half the patrons sitting at the bar. It took several minutes before anyone even acknowledged our family of four. I'll make a long story short. We finally got seated, waitress was nice but frazzled. Took our order and asked for patience, as they had a new cook that night. An hour later, 3 out of 4 of us got our food. They dropped my wife's salmon on the floor and had to re-do it. My son and I got our steaks. Based on the $$ on Yelp, we thought this place would be relatively cheap, but at $30-$35 per steak it wasn't and I expected it to be delicious for that price. It wasn't. Mine was lacking in any flavor, which was only partially helped by dousing it with A1. My sons was very undercooked and also lacking in flavor and very tough. My daughters meal was terrible Mac and Cheese. And when my wife's salmon finally came out she had to send it back because it was so raw. When she got it back it was, like everything else, not good. Oh, and we never got our salad or soup. So for our family of 4, we spent $120 for an absolutely terrible dinner. It was one of the worst dining experiences of my life which was compounded by also being very expensive (contrary to the $$ rating on Yelp). read more

Decided to stop here for breakfast on a busy weekend morning. Big mistake. Server (an older woman) acted like she didn't want to be there...very grumpy. Came to out table once during our 1 1/2 hour dreaded visit. Waited for our food for over an hour! Food was extremely bland. Ordered breakfast burrito and it was the worst burrito I've ever had. Came on a big white plate with NOTHING else. No salsa, no sour cream, absolutely nothing. Just a dry tortilla with some egg in it. Tasted like cardboard. I visit the area quite often and was hoping this place would be good. Will not go here again unless they learn how to make food and present it better. read more

I placed a review of this restaurant a few days ago and gave them a three star rating and stated, that based on my vast experience of dining out ( five decades in 31 states) those numbers weren't in the original post of which I said There are only a few hundred 5 star restaurants in the world, therefore my original star rating of only 3 stars is very, very high but unfortunately the restaurant didn't quite understand my point and sent me a thank you reply that included their disappointment of my only giving them 3 stars and promised to do better next time. That rating of 3 stars (repeat) equals a very very high rating from myself therefore I am gladly changjng their rating to a 5 star (for a local small town). Example of a 5 star restaurant, try Alinea's in Chicago #9 in the top 10 worldwide, dinner for 2 = $420 without wine, that was my reference. Oh, and no I haven't dined there $420 for dinner? My husband and I went in for breakfast this morning and sat at a table next to the kitchen. It was very cool in the restaurant. My husband had to go out to car to get a heavier jacket. Our waitress was very nice and did a good job. Our food when it arrived was on the cooler side but tasted good. The most annoying thing was the cook was talking to the girl helping in the kitchen and he was very loud. We heard everything about his family problems and his thought on many subjects. He also had on a filthy sweatshirt which I assume was from standing at the grill. Just did not look very appetizing ! read more

Food was very good, service was extremely slow, despite the restaurant not appearing to be too crowded. (Staff was extremely friendly, though.) Shuffleboard was fun. Food came out slow and after 20 minutes of completing our meal and not receiving our check, we finally spotted the waitress, who never looked in our direction (so we could not flag her) before she disappeared in the back again. We asked the bartender to let her know that we needed our check, but she still did not come. After another 10 minutes (probably longer), we had to ask again. The place was not what we expected but thought it was cute and cozy and the wait staff were very friendly. We were asked about drinks and we ordered a beer. The waitress named off the beers and I pointed to their "happy hour" Coors Lite. They had ran out of tap and did not have any bottles. That's ok, I ordered a different beer. She asked if we were ready to order and I ordered a french dip just to be told again, sorry we are all out. Someone ordered the last one..ok so I ordered the cheeseburger. A few minutes later, 2 ladies came in and sat down. We received our meal and my cheeseburger was really the saddest little burger you have ever seen. Maybe it had a good taste? Yeah, just a cheeseburger. The best part though was after I took my first bite, I see the waitress bring out a FRENCH DIP sandwich to the ladies who sat down AFTER we gave our order. 4 months just to be disappointed. Comes with a perfect baked potato and plenty of fixings, seasonal veggies were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection, not mushy. Best chicken strips in town! I have a 4 year old, so I've tried everything in town. Breakfast is always good too, I usually build my own omelette, love the options! Full bar and great wine selection.
