Let me start by saying, I had a great time with the group that I was with, celebrating a birthday in the reserve section & the band played amazingly! As a person who grew up with country music, born in Texas, and familiar with country dancing etiquette, this bar has a lot to learn about being tactful, courteous, & country values when enforcing their very rigid rules on the dance floor. 1. If you don't know how to dance, don't bother coming here (it's probably why they are not as crowded as I remember it being the last time I went). 2. If you know how to dance, but you don't dance the way they do, don't bother. 3. If you do bother coming and you aren't dancing the line dance the way they do, even if your dancing the correct dance to it's song, security will come to the dance floor and tell you to get off the dance floor! 4. If you do get on the dance floor but don't know how to dance and you want to try to follow along and learn (any style) security will come throw you off the dance floor too! 5. Security isn't tactful, so when they humiliate you, don't bother complaining because the Entertainment Manager, Heather, will give you her attitude and tell you it's just the way it is! 6. Food took over an hour to come out but don't bother complaining, they just tell you it's coming and they're busy! 7. Terrible service. Don't even bother coming here. Our friends got kicked out because they walked through the wrong door on their way to the restroom. This guard had been on us all night, and watching every move our group made. We were a group of 14 people who had dinner at the Ranch for a birthday and went to the saloon as recommended by our waiter. My friend took out her inhaler and they mistakenly accused her of vaping, that was strike one. She had to take it out of her bag so he could verify that it was indeed for her asthma. Then my friends walked through the wrong door & they were immediately escorted out. Four staff members rushed to escort out two men. As if they did something so terrible that is required so much manpower. When explaining to him that it was a mistake and they were on the way to the restroom, he said there was no way that was the case given that he had observed them go to the restroom before and they knew how to get there. I've seen more than one patron roughly escorted out. We went to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday and had a horrible night filled with security guards stalking our table, we had to pay $15 to get in and $750 for the table, all patrons were excited, but security was over the top watching us. One in our group had open toe shoes on so they don't allow you in the floor. Another was asked to leave the dance floor for going wrong way too many times. I have severe knee issues that keep me from using stairs, sitting on a high level chair, or dancing. My kids love to dance, so I sometimes go to spend time with them. Tonight I was told to sit in this area that has 3 lower chairs. it is considered the handicap area. The security guy had to ask the gal seated there to let me sit there. My family could not join me. I never was offered to order drink or food. It was a terrible night. I will not be going back until a new manager learns how to treat people. The ranch was amazing. We went for my moms 60th birthday and we got table service. It was worth it even though it's a bit pricey for a smaller group. We went last night for two reasons specifically, the first being that it was 18+ night meaning my boyfriend (19) was allowed in, and second being that Bootscootinboogie, a line dancing instructor whose videos I love to learn from, was there instructing (none of our negative experience has anything to do with him, still love Bootscootinboogie!). When we arrived, I (21) was given a blue wristband and my boyfriend was given two large X's Sharpied onto his hands. Perfect, exactly how I'd expect/hope the place would be run. Although things ended awfully, I have to say that we were truly having a great time initially and even planned on heading back next week for our 1-year anniversary. Those plans were cancelled by the end of the night. My boyfriend had gone to the bathroom a few times throughout the night and washed his hands, a habit that I appreciate as a normal, sanitary person, but I guess is discouraged if you want to avoid being kicked out of The Ranch. A guy came up to him at one point of the night to reapply his Sharpie X's because they were fading. That went totally fine. He even said to come find him if they wore out at all later to reapply again if he needed to. Everything was fine at this point. That all changed very quickly when a man, apparently the head of security, began waiting at the edge of the dance floor for us to come off. As we walked off, he approached my boyfriend and asked to come talk to him outside. I went along, and when we got outside, he proceeded to describe to my boyfriend how they caught him on the security cameras "rubbing his hands raw" to get the Sharpie off and that "they're not here to babysit him, so we need to leave." I can only laugh about it now, because the idea that my boyfriend, who doesn't drink and gladly complied when the one guy asked to reapply his marks, was scratching at his hands (would doing that with dry hands even remove Sharpie?) just so that he could try to get a drink WITHOUT A WRISTBAND is so absurd. Maybe the bouncers have a game where they pick a random innocent patron from the security cameras and make up reasons for the other person to kick them out, like an Impractical Jokers kind of thing? That's truly a more reasonable explanation. My boyfriend asked for his money back, and they refused to give it to us. The people here are ridiculous, and I'm glad to see that plenty of other reviews here have highlighted how overbearing and incompetent the staff is. The lack of consideration and accommodation was something we had never expected. Let's review: 1. We are told a couple weeks before the event they are only giving us 8 small high tops for our entire party. We had to fight for more space. Mind you this is a FIVE FIGURE party. 2. They refused to give us stools. Literally wouldn't give us a place for people to sit when we showed up. People had nowhere to sit for 4 hours. 3. Women had feet hurting so took off shoes. Instantly yelled at by staff. 4. They gave us so much grief in our setup of simple Christmas Decorations. 5. Communication between staff was poor. 6. Even though we were spending so much on food and beverages they made us pay a cover charge at the door in addition for each member. 7. They charged us a dance lesson fee for every member even though not one person took a dance lesson. 8. They gave us one person for the entire party. People were always waiting on drinks, many orders never got filled - it was poorly staffed. I try to be very understanding regarding a business and its specific challenges. This was way beyond that. She and Jordan were very supportive of our needs during the event, the food and drinks were excellent, the venue was beautiful, and all around, we have nothing but good things to say. My wife and I walked in here one Saturday evening 4-5 months ago and we have been hooked ever since. We are experienced dancers and have visited just about every other country night club in SoCal, so upon entering we were impressed with beautifully designed bar, seating, dancefloor and stage. We sat along the dancefloor rails which is open seating. Ordered a few drinks and yellowtail tacos (highly recommend) and joined in on a few dances that we were familiar with. We had a great time socializing with everyone and bar service. Ofcourse we had to go back the following weekend and the "regulars" took notice of us and welcomed us with open arms. The folks that frequent this establishment are genuinely good people that always have a great attitude and happy to see other dancers enjoying themselves. Fast foward to now, and we spend almost every Saturday night at The Ranch. Valet parking is great, the entire staff here goes above and beyond to make sure you are taken care of. We usually reserve a table for 2, a day before. The waitresses that have served us have been first class with attentiveness. A few that I can remember are Taylor, Kim and Gabby. The manager Chad is very welcoming and friendly. The security staff Frank, Angel, and Abel are all very intent on keeping the place safe and always stopping by our table to say hi and ask if we're in need of anything. I can understand the frustration of other yelp reviewers that didn't like being asked by security to not dance in flip flops or not be on the dance floor while participating in another dance different from the designated dance, but many people fail to realize that its a safety issue. I would encourage them to visit a lesser managed dance bar and observe the chaos that can occur when dance etiquette is not being practiced. The food has always been great and worth every penny. A few of our favorites are the ahi tuna, mashed potatoes, duck, and lobster mac n cheese. The moscow mules are great quality and my wife really enjoys the Prickly Poppy cocktail. Saturday nights here are a mix of 2 step, line dances, freestyle, various cha-cha, and a small bit of waltz and west coast swing. Terrible customer service. Took 30 minutes to get one drink that was warm and very weak. I watched security berate several individuals about very minor issues, such as not knowing the dance moves for some of the line dances and standing near the stage. One gentleman was asked to leave because he tucked his jeans into his boots (perhaps a strange fashion choice but a dress code violation? - also I didn't notice any dress code posted, but they made a very big deal about this guy's jeans) I noticed some other reviews mentioned staff seems racist, and I have to agree. If you consider yourself a beginner at line dancing know that Saturdays are geared for the professionals and if you don't know the dances, you'll have to stay off the dance floor most of the night. They actually have bouncers telling people to get off the floor if they are not dancing the correct dance! Despite not being able to dance the whole night on the dance floor as I envisioned, I still had a fun time with my group of friends as we enjoyed people watching and dancing on the floor when we could. We actually had gotten there right as the line dance lesson started, so we did learn one line dance called the Rose Garden, but it was quite tough for a beginner. There was some "freestyle" time and other dances that were extremely easy, but for the most part it's a night for the pros. If that's you, congrats. I'm rewriting my previous review because I wrote it from a broken heart. The sadness has begun to subside and I can admit when I say or do something wrong. I said some things I didn't totally mean, I was speaking from total devastation. I've called this place home for nearly 10 years. I've celebrated so much of my life here, built incredible friendships and made countless memories. However in the last two years, changes to management and suddenly enforcement of rules with no warning and no grace have turned this into a cold, cruel place. Everyone who cared about customers and who wanted to provide customer service that would bring people back again and again have been fired or have left because of all the changes. The regulars have left in droves. I attempted to celebrate my birthday here with my friends from church and from the dance community on Friday, Aug 9. Someone I considered a friend quickly and aggressively approached me to take down my decorations and when I referenced my many other parties and other peoples' parties that have had decorations I was gaslit about my recollection being inaccurate. I have photos to prove my point. The manager, Alfredo, came over and aggressively "handled" the situation and offered me the opportunity to leave if I was so unhappy with the rules. An opportunity I certainly wanted to take but I had nearly 30 people on their way. I felt backed into a corner and fought back tears as best I could. I cried 3 different times throughout the night because of the harassment from Alfredo and security. If the rules are suddenly enforced, fine. But have some GRACE and understand the experience from our side. We've been used to things happening a certain way and if you fired people because of it, just let us know what to expect. Educate us, don't come AT us. Alfredo is aggressive and intimidating. As a woman, I became fearful of him every time he approached my group, and it happened frequently. A friend finally asked him to please leave me alone because she witnessed his actions and words towards me all night. Whether we were standing in the wrong place near our table in a section of the restaurant that was COMPLETELY empty or too many people were ordering food from our table or being told all the things I've done there for years are no longer acceptable, we were under constant scrutiny. I was humiliated in front of my friends every time he'd come over to address things. Rather than pull me aside he'd be a tough guy towards me and again and again back me into a corner to the point of feeling intimidated and unsafe by his bulging eyes and flaring nostrils. As a woman, being under constant surveillance by 5-6 grown men who watched my every move made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable and completely unsafe. This used to be an extension of my home, of my family but I was treated like a criminal. I'd cringe every time I'd look over and see security and management literally watching my every move. I grew up in a law enforcement home and was taught to always be hyper aware of my surroundings and I was hyper aware of how many men were constantly watching me. It was very disturbing. I used to defend this place and I have tried bringing in new people to help regrow the community. This place means A LOT to me and to the people who have been loyal patrons. It's brought so much life to us and to be treated so poorly is truly heartbreaking. I decided that night, before I got banned...something I had to find out through a third party because they don't have the decency to spare me further humiliation...that I will not be coming back to support this place. There are many other places around that don't police FUN quite as much. Of course rules are needed for the dance floor to keep people safe but the other "rules" are drastically changing the warm, welcoming culture this place once was. If you like dancing and are willing to learn, the Ranch is a great spot in OC; it's clean, has a good amount of line dancing (as opposed to 2 step) and generally a good mix between old time classics and newer circuit dances. It has a nice mixed crowd of different ages which i also enjoy. I think our current DJ Lauren is nice but she's a bit inexperienced and that's been disappointing as for a little while the Ranch had brought in a pretty well know DJ / Choreographer in the Line Dance community (DJ Rick) and he was excellent. I do appreciate that Lauren is friendly and will play requests! but sometimes i think her lack of experience shows - for example recently she has been playing multiple songs that another regular has choreographed himself. and while that is nice of her - i think she should only play 1 of his songs per night since he's an amature choreographer and his songs are easy and a little flat. Lastly, I'm sometimes embarrassed to bring friends or coworkers here because there is very limited seating if you are not willing to pay the high min for a table. They will keep tables empty for the night - it's a bizarre policy. no other line dancing establishment does this (Cowboy Country / Montanas etc) I've also been annoyed that the security can be rude to men for dress code issues (a friend wore shorts - because he didn't know) but some women wear inappropriate bra like tops and no one says anything. i know our culture is super chill with that but it's another thing that bothers me. lastly i'll just say that i would have emailed the manager but it seems like management changed recently as i haven't seen Jerry or some of the other regulars. Generally the front desk and servers are fine. Lessons with Kerry are great (at 6:30 and 7:30) I'm give 3 stars because i do continue to return - i just wish the Ranch / Saloon would be a little more friendly and less uptight about their tables/seating. read more
