I love The Range. This review is really for all the locations, since we've never had a bad experience. We are usually here for breakfast, and I swear by the Range French Toast, which is fresh brioche lathered with apple butter and fresh fruit. Yum. Or, the oatmeal, topped with a big old scoop of cinnamon ice cream. Sounds bizarre but is amazing. So good. My husband and parents swear by the biscuits and gravy and the huevos rancheros, so you can get sweet or savory, whatever suits you. For lunch or dinner, my husband vouches for the enormous chicken fried steak and I love the range chicken, but there's a host of diner-inspired options with a New Mexican twist that will fill you up. We have always had good service by knowledgable staff that attends to your drink refills and any custom requests without missing a beat. Busy or slow, we always get great service. My only quibble, which is where I docked a star, is the prices. $10-12 for breakfast, and $15-17 for lunch/dinner entrees is on the steep side, especially for diner food. They source local, so it's understandable. But it definitely makes The Range a special treat, not a staple. read more

This place was great. The space was large, with small kitchen ranges as decorations everywhere and cows flying from the ceiling. We were seated quickly and brought our drinks. The breakfast menu was big and hard to make a decision, but I ended up going with the Kitchen Sink Omelet. It wasn't too far out of my comfort zone but still something different than I can get where I live. It was good, but kind of weird. It had avocado in, not guacamole (which I have had on the side of an omelet before), but whole slices of avocado. The creaminess of the avocado with the hash browns was a strange combination, but like I said, still good. My toast was a little burnt but not that big of a deal. I wasn't able to try any of the bakery items that looked delicious in the case on the way out but the pies looked perfect. read more

The Range is an Albuquerque favorite and a great local spot for both New Mexico fare like Huevos Rancheros and some good ol enchiladas, but also has comfort foods like meatloaf and chicken fried steak. PROS: the menu selection is very good, whether you are in the mood for breakfast, New Mexican, or classic comfort food, The Range has got it all. The quality of the food is generally above average, and there are some more unique items on the menu which are definitely worth a try. I really like the D.A.T (Day After Thanksgiving) sandwich, which is pretty much exactly how I make it day after Thanksgiving, with oven roasted turkey, stuffing, cranberry chutney, and mayo on sourdough. I would ask them to go light on the chutney because it is VERY sweet and can overpower the taste of the other yummy stuff on there. The meatloaf is good as well, and I like the fact that they fry the slice of meatloaf on the flat iron before they serve it, it gives it some crispyness and the gravy on top is GOOD. CONS: Service is very slow there, even when it's not terribly busy. Sunday afternoon will almost guarantee a 30 min wait to have a seat, and another 30-45 before you get your food. Every time I have been there, the service was just slow, and a few times the restaurant was at about half capacity. That is the only reason it didn't get 4 stars. Overall a good place to eat, with quality food at a reasonable price, and if you are not in a hurry, or threatening to kill your daughter because you are hangry and she is whining about the food not being there yet, then I highly recommend it. If you don't like longer than average wait times and slower than average service, I would avoid the range between about 11-1400 on Sundays. read more

Been coming here for years and it's a family favorite. I can't say I've loved every single thing I've ever eaten here, but with a menu this diverse, you're bound to find items you adore. For me, it's the country fried steak (brown gravy is my favorite, but the green Chile and white are good too), Brussels sprouts (Oh Em Gee, they are good) and cream puff. Hubby and I had a very disappointing visit to this location of The Range today, and I need to share it in full so that the owners can understand my frustration and downright anger. We arrived at about 1:05 p.m., were seated rather promptly, and we gave our order to our server right at 1:15 p.m. (Due to past issues with slow service at other locations, we decided to keep track of how long it took our order to get to us from the kitchen.) We ordered an appetizer - the Range quesadilla without green chile (ordered it on the side and added shredded chicken) and one hamburger with fries. During the ensuing 35 minutes, our server came to the table ONE TIME, about 5 minutes or so into the wait, to refill my iced tea glass. Finally I cornered another server and asked him to find our server so we could find out where out lunch was. Our server never appeared, but a young man - obviously recruited - brought our food at 1:50!!!!! Thirty-five minutes to prepare one hamburger and one quesadilla!!!! The hamburger with fries came as a hamburger with onion rings. My quesadilla was not at all hot and had obviously been sitting for five minutes or more because the underside was soggy and the plate was wet. There was NO green chile on the side. The young man brought a plate of fries, and we proceeded to eat our lunch. Again, our server did not come to the table until both of us had eaten our fill, and she so sweetly asked if everything was fine. When I unloaded my anger on her, she got the manager, who came to the table and apologized. I have to say that the on-duty manager was very sympathetic to our "plight" and not only did he take care of our lunch, he also gave us a certificate for another mean to try to make up for the crappy time. This was our first time at this location, but we have eaten at three of the other four locations of The Range, and the same problems seem to crop up every time we try. At one location, a hamburger and three tacos took 25 minutes to arrive - and we were one of THREE tables in the entire restaurant. This chain seems to have a kitchen problem. And I can tell you that it does NOT take 20 minutes to cook a hamburger patty---I can go to almost any other restaurant in this town and order a hamburger and have it in front of me in 20 minutes. I don't know why this restaurant wants to perpetuate this myth. Several suggestions: 1. The kitchen staff needs to learn to prepare more than one order at a time! It becomes obvious that the staff doesn't know how to multi-task and prepare two or three orders at a time. In all the time we were in the restaurant today, I never saw more than one server at a time serving an order. 2. If the kitchen is short-staffed, HIRE SOME MORE PEOPLE!!! The wait of 35 minutes for our lunch was inexcusable, and to have part of that lunch - the quesadilla - be soggy from sitting is even more inexcusable. 3. Servers should be trained to watch their tables, and watch the time. They should stay aware of the status of the preparation of the orders for their customers and be allowed to prod the kitchen staff to hurry it up and do their jobs. The server should be checking in the kitchen every five minutes for the status of orders for their tables. 4. Servers should appear at the table within three minutes of service of the order to see if all is in order. Our server disappeared and didn't check with us until we were nearly finished. As we were sitting next to the opening to the beverage station (and the order kiosk), I also noticed that after our server took our order, she stood in the beverage station for two or three minutes - talking to another server - before she put our order on the computer. I was so disappointed in this lunch, as Hubby and I both had been looking forward to a pleasant experience on one of the few days that we've had available lately to be together for such a meal. The good parts: Hubby's hamburger was delicious, and so were the fries - properly cooked (even though it seemed to take forever) and tasty. (The onion rings were good too--I brought them home to eat later). My quesadilla was absolutely delicious!!! The fillings of artichoke hearts, red bell pepper, tomato, white cheddar, and shredded chicken went together so well and made for an interesting and delicious meal. I just wish that the bottoms of the pieces had not been soggy. I have to admit that I brought half of it home and will see if I can "un-sog" the pieces. The Range has delicious food and lots of interesting offerings. It is a crying shame that the service - in at least four of their locations - is crappy!!!!! read more

Food was good. Service was terrible. Server took over 10 minutes to ask for our order. She forgot 3 items at 3 different times and never apologized or fixed quickly without question. I believe it was racially motivated. We are white and she is Hispanic. The green chili strips were tiny and one was even cut in half. I've been eating them for over 10 years and never had a complaint. The menu has lost lots of great dishes and serves primarily Mexican food. Great Huevos Rancheros! There are a hundred ways to prepare Huevos Rancheros, but I do like The Range Cafe's version. It comes with a blue corn tortilla at the base. They use whole beans instead of refried beans. The chile sauce, albeit red or green, is fresh and of good quality. They also have vegetarian options and gluten-free selections. I was told by a few friends that this place was good and boy howdy I have good friends. I got the chicken fried steak and eggs and the chili con queso. The queso is thick and creamy absolutely perfect. The chicken fried steak and eggs were amazing as well. The only thing I was a little kicked by was the bill it is a little expensive especially for a college budget, but I would come here every now and then for the awesome food. We went to The Range for a late lunch and well the food was good, the service was poor. I had the tamales with both the red and green sauce. They filling was tender and flavorful and the masa was moist and firm. They were good tamales. My wife had the chile rellenos. They did not had the typical batter--the coating was a crisp blue cornmeal. While different, the chiles were also good. The kitchen was however poor. It took about 40 minutes for our food to come out. Our waitress did not keep us informed of the issues. She also did not bring one of the drinks ordered. When the food came out, one of the orders was wrong and the replacement burger was not cooked as ordered. The server who brought the food out stated that he would convey our concerns to the manager which he did not do. When I spoke with the manger all he did to address our dissatisfaction was to say that he was sorry. While The Range's food was good, I did not think that it was great. The service and service recovery were poor and I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

Great restaurant! So many choices, best oatmeal with custom made cinnamon ice cream!! I love the hamburger with sliced ham. Add green chili to anything and it's the perfect meal. Had a very bad dining experience last night. We've always loved the Huevos Rancheros but everything had changed. The beans were mushy, the red chile had no flavor, and the potatoes were very bland. We ordered hamburger patties for one of our orders and they were not even edible and they had a horrible stench to them. We complained but to no avail. Worst service I've received at any restaurant in ABQ in years. Hostess walked over me to get to a group behind me. I was left to wander the restaurant looking for my party. My party told her to look for me so it shouldn't have been a surprise to her. My food arrived cold and by the time it got to my table I was too weak from hunger to just get up and leave like I wanted. I must have been wearing my cloak of invisibility. The waitress had other people to wait on and couldn't be bothered to check on us after the food was delivered to the table by someone else. I had to get my own hot sauce for my eggs. My daughter and I dine here often. Usually the wait time is about 15-20min. You greeted with a friendly courteous smile. Today we sat in front of the fireplace. During the winter it tends to get chilly on your back, due to the emergency door that is near the table. the wait staff will ask if you would like the fire place turned on. Today we said yes, it made our seating comfortable. The food here is very tasty and cooked to your desire and they do their best to complete your special food needs if you need to change out an item on their menu. The ambiance is deligjtful, paintings on the wall out outlandish southwest in a quirky sense.. tastefully done and the childeren find it funny to see flying cows. read more

Chose to eat at this place due to the stars and recommendations of previous patrons. Walked in and we were greeted by a very lovely hostess and she advised us it would be 7 minutes to seat so they could clean tables, understandable in a pandemic world. Once we were seated we were greeted by our waiter , he took our drink order and then came back with our drinks. I ordered the chicken fried steak with green chili gravy, when it was received it was lukewarm, the range fries were overcooked and bordering cold , my eggs were weak warm as well . The only good thing about my breakfast was the English muffin with what I'm assuming as fresh BlackBerry jam. Our waiter was almost Non existent after he took our order. I had to ask repeatedly to have my coffee refreshed, which I'm not a big fan of! If I am tipping you, please fill my coffee without me asking. Hubby had the Carne Adovada Huevos Rancheros it too was semi warm, the tortilla was cold and hard and the meal was underwhelming. He had a Pickel Mary and it was the best thing about his meal.
