Wanted to like this place, since it was recommended, but it was very disappointing . Went on a Saturday and was shocked that they had no specials. Menu is very limited. Bread has a nasty black crust that is almost inedible. My wife ordered linguine with clams- most clams were rubbery. I had the sirloin which had nice seasoning but 20% was gristle. Surprised that a $28 steak came with fries and not something more appropriate. I wish the owner the best of luck, but we won't be back. read more

I would move to Tiverton just so I could live near this place. Had Bluefish there the other night. Was without doubt the best fish dish I've had ever. The salmon cakes were wonderful too as were the oysters. Wow, by chance Kim and I stopped here for a bite. The menu made it difficult. So many tasty sounding dishes. Kim chose the steak, I chose the pork/veal meatballs. Wonderful atmosphere! We ate by a wood burning fire and the staff were all very attentive and friendly. The owner (or manager) came to check on our table and ended up giving us a loaf of their delicious artesian bread to bring home because we loved it so much! The food was all very good. We went to one of our favorite restaurants last night, we love Aaron's cooking! One of its drawbacks is how noisy it gets. During Covid (masks were required), one of the "perks" was that the amount of seating was limited so the noise bouncing off of the concrete floors and wooden seating was reduced. Last night the noise was back in full force; a couple of times my partner couldn't hear me across the table due to there being three tables of six in the middle of the room surrounded by booths of twos and fours. It's part of the "Red Dory experience" but it was nice to have a quieter dining room this past year. FYI. What was disappointing was the Panzanella Salad for $15.00 - Our waiter described it as "their take on a Caprese salad". What was served was a glop of mozzarella cheese, a few chunks of "Walker's tomatoes", a few cucumber chunks and some bread with some basil and olive oil dressing. The flavors didn't have any chance of working together. It was the first time I was disappointed with anything that comes out of the RD kitchen. I should have stuck with my usual Simple Green salad - next time! read more

So, I've been to a lot of restaurants in the Newport and southcoast (MA) area. The Red Dory is the best of all, in my opinion. Here's why: The chef has an incredible talent for dishes that make the natural flavors just dance. Nothing is lost, nothing is overwhelming, it's all quite edible. Portion sizes are great, and the menu is definitely not something you will see repeatedly around town. The atmosphere is a reflection of the chef; casual and relaxed, but with understated elegance. The views of the Sakonnet river in the daytime are fabulous. At night, the lighting is sufficient, but not harsh (a-freakin'-men), making it a cozy space. We've only eaten at the bar so far, but the bartenders offered very friendly and knowledgeable service. I repeat, friendly. The menu is limited, which I think gives the chef a chance to focus his energy on creating amazing dishes. DO NOT leave this place without trying the Ceviche. The salmon cakes are great, the sardines are great, the Tapas menu on Sunday... great. Wine list is also limited, but extremely well chosen. This is a restaurant for people who like to dine out and who really like the nuances of food. Each time we've gone, we notice that all the other diners are relaxed and enjoying themselves. Meals are not cheap, but not much is in Newport county. I will say that the experience here is worth every cent. read more

The Red Dory is outside the norm for Tiverton, as there isn't really anything like it closeby. As impressed as I was given the location, I overall wasn't wowed, and am not rushing to go back. It feels cozy inside, with wooden floors, a beautiful big wooden bar, and open seating around a fireplace. The art is funky and nautical but not tacky. In the summer, they have amazing outdoor seating that overlooks the water. It has a great ambiance but is an open concept theme, which loses the intimacy, feels crowded and is loud. The menu is what confuses me most. Yelp states that it is "Mediterranean", however, it does not meet my understanding of Mediterranean whatsoever. If having seafood on the menu is Mediterranean, then yes it is, but there wasn't any falafal, yogurts, pitas, etc, and even the fish wasn't what I would expect for Med. Also, the menu on Yelp is different than the menu in the restaurant, which is great since it shows that they change their menu seasonally, however, the menu had nothing similar, not even the same type/genre of food. Regardless, the menu is eclectic, specific, and does not have many "essentials". Again, this is both a good and a bad thing. It's great because it shows they are specialized, have delicious, flavorful, and thoughtful menu options and really cater to what the chef can create, and truly show the culinary art. However, given it is a local restaurant in a small town, it's bad as there is not much variety, and missing menu "staple " items (As in, a steak, or chicken, or pasta). We got the salad, the cod, orecchiette turkey/veal meatballs, and Portugese whole fish. It was a little complicated since I am allergic to many spices, and basically everything had spices/pepper, but they were happily and easily able to accomodate and still make my meal taste great. The food was good, unique, and looked great plating, but nothing was 'wow' worthy. The service was also good and we were able to be seated right away with a party of 4 on a Friday. The waitress was friendly, helpful and attentive. It was a little confusing when we tried to order a bottle of wine and the waitress just stated "well, its just the price of the bottle x 4", which typically isn't how its priced, or at least theres options where its a bit cheaper to get a bottle rather than 4 glasses of wine. Overall, I just felt like TRD missed the mark for what my expectations or hopes were, however, there isn't any one thing in particular that I can blame it on. read more

Great place that stands apart from a lot of nearby restaurants. First, the service is very professional, and a cut above other local places. Second, the menu takes a lot of risks, which I love. Finally, the atmosphere is casual but stylish, and reflects the thoughtfulness of the restaurant's owners. On a recent visit, we enjoyed the seared octopus and the steak. The wine and beer lists cover a lot of bases and have some more affordable options by the glass. Some dishes fell a little flat, like a clam past with one clam shell on top (I'm presuming they were in the sauce, but still, most restaurants put a few more on top). Another pasta dish involved meatballs that didn't pack a punch, flavor-wise. That said, it's a great place that goes beyond the standard "stuffed scrod" coastal menu and offers a great deal of creative and delicious meals. read more

Super below avg. low on quantity and quality. Espresso martinis look good at least although I didn't partake. Mezzo platter, ceviche, scallops and salads were blah. Smoked chowder sounds delicious but was blah as well and I almost chipped a tooth biting down on a shell. Swordfish was overcooked and really blah. Don't know why they wouldn't cut a thicker piece and serve a swordfish steak. Desserts were terrible though. Chocolate cake was super dry and really subpar icy ice cream on top. We were there Thursday night with friends from Austin and New York City. We kind of wanted to show the place off to people accustomed to culinary adventures. And in that department Red Dory did not disappoint. There were a couple of pesky problems. The setting sun coming in the front windows blinded us! We all had to put our sunglasses on and use our menus for shade. A few flies decided to join our party and so we needed the menus to swat them off. Later in the evening, the AC must have been turned off. We were sorry we had given up our menus to the server. We needed them to fan ourselves. This may sound nit picky, but the place really needs awnings and/or shades. read more

The Red Dory aspires to be a high end restaurant in an area that sorely needs a good place to have dinner and drinks. But, it falls short of expectations. We have eaten at the Dory four times now, giving them the benefit of the doubt and trying different dishes and each time we have left disappointed and feeling like we over paid. Steak fries -- way too salty. Lobster risotto-- portion too small and flavorless. Pork and veal meatballs -- flavorless. Every dish has fallen short. The menu has not changed ever either. A restaurant at their level should be rotating dishes or at least offering specials. On the bar side, the selection of beer & wine is limited but more importantly the bartender (who I believe is the owner) is not professionally trained. Every cocktail I've tried there was eyeballed and off in a dimension of taste. I can't recommend the Red Dory at this time. Hopefully management will make some changes to address the situation. read more

Hmm...so The Red Dory was recommended to us. It was good. Not bad...but not a wow. And I think we expected a wow. We split the bluefish cakes to start. They were very good. Paired with a tasty cucumber relish (brined cucumbers with pickled onions and cilantro). Main dishes were monkfish special with ratatouille and the chicken dish (I wanted to try the homemade pickles). They were both okay. Not sure I would go back. Probably try one of the other many places to around the area. read more

The Red Dory is a nice quaint environment, classy but relaxed. It has an outside seating area. We expected to sit outside but it was full and a bit too close to closing time to wait. While waiting for a table to be seated for dinner, an expresso martini ordered was woefully lacking. The cosmo, however was delicious. Not sure why the price for cocktails were so pricey. They were as much price as each entree. The bucatini was delicious and the veal meatballs were so delicious! Totally recommend the meatball dish. All in all I would recommend the entrees but grab your cocktails elsewhere! Too pricey and not made the traditional way. read more

What. a Joke went with my wife at 5:30 on a Saturday place was empty. They asked us if we had reservations I had to laugh. They offered us a place at the bar telling us they had people coming in between 6:00-7:00 I looked at them and said the place is empty. Portion deficient.... The restaurant was packed. Good sign. The menu was enticing, particularly the appetizers. Also good. And the appetizer and salad serving sizes were...WTF? I didn't know this was a tapas place. In fact, it's not, but the portions looked like they were the result of rationing in some war-torn third world country. Seriously, the ceviche, not extraordinary tasting by the way, was about 2-3 tablespoons' worth. We were all shocked, leading my wife to say, "Is this a joke?" The "simple salad" was nothing more than a few greens - very few - drenched in a vinaigrette. My wife's seafood salad took up the footprint of a small banana. The lobster entree someone else at our table had came in a small bowl. The size was not as shocking - it was an entree after all - but the taste did not wow her. Other choices included crab cakes - tasty, but a bit musher than I had expected, octopus - a decent portion and flavorful, though I've had better (usually with a smokier flavor), and squid - okay, but the marinade was simply odd and did not highlight the squid well. Dessert looked boring. We skipped it. All in all, the octopus saved this from being a two-star review, plus the service was decent. The location is nice as well, though I'd rather go to a dive with amazing food than to patronize "Meh with a view". read more

The Red Dory is an excellent and much needed restaurant addition to area. It's a casual and comfortable place to dine- but with an upscale vibe. We thought that the new owner did a great job with updating the interior and the fireplace is a nice addition (especially welcome on a cold January night). As for the food, we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. For apps, we had the mezza platter and fried oysters. For mains, mustard salmon - all perfectly prepared and delicious. Deserts were great- we had (and recommend) the pear tatine and lemon pudding with huckleberry sauce. We had a terrific meal tonight. We arrived (2) at 6:30 right after a much needed rain shower and discovered the restaurant filled to capacity. We had not made a reservation and hoped we would get a table with little wait time. Was told about a 60 min wait but the hostess suggested outside on the deck would be nice. Luckily the busboy was wiping off tables and chairs on the outside deck. We sat down at a nice table outside and right then the sun came out and the view of the Sakonnet River was spectacular with a flotilla of boats and day sailers passing by. We ordered a Rose and rum and coke. The Rose came in a Rocks glass and was only half filled. The rum and coke was 7.00 which was fine, but the Rose in the half filled glass was 11.00 and we thought this was not right and are only thumbs down. We ordered the Corn-Meal crusted fried oysters with tartar sauce, lemon and a delicious cole slaw. The oysters were spectacular with a light flaky coating. For the main course we had the Grilled swordfish with ratatouille, fingerlings and salsa verde. Awesome! The Roast chicken with preserved lemon and a summer vegetable salad was also excellent!The chicken was moist and tender. For dessert we shared a Lemon buttermilk pudding with huckleberry sauce and this became right then and there my favorite dessert! The hostess, and waitstaff were attentive and gave great suggestions. The owner/chef came by our table and asked us how we liked our meal and also took our dessert order. Will definitely go to The Red Dory again. read more

Steve is one of south coasts most talented chef's. Have been eating there since day one. His use of local farms is just the beginning . Greens from Skinny Dip farm are amazing. Favorites over the years are his Sunday tapas ribs , The Grilled Octopus with chickpeas , and the mezze platter are our go to items. Flavors reflect not just the the local coast environme,nt but the culture as well , drawing from Cape Verdean and Portuguese traditional influences . The flavors , presentation and execution are completely satisfying. Price points and portions are very reasonable given the quality and creativity. It has become a weekly destination , with great friendly staff, service , and consistency of food being at the highest level. This is a true gem in the south coast dinning scene. My husband and I are big foodies and we're huge fans of Steve Johnson, the chef/owner of the Red Dory. We used to eat in his restaurant in Boston all the time. If you enjoy fresh local ingredients and great seafood, this is the place to go. . I love the fried oyster appetizer and the pastas are delicious. Would highly recommend!
