Fantastic! Early dinner on Saturday night without reservations... we were lucky! Not only did we get in early enough on a rainy, cold Saturday, we were able to get a great window seat with a view of the bay. Service was welcoming and attentive. Our server was knowledgeable and made recommendations from the menu - he was so friendly and made me feel as though I was a regular though my first time here. I could tell there were a lot of regulars that night and I can understand why. The food was fantastic. We started with the daily ceviche which was beautifully plated with chilies, radish, mint. The fish was fresh, citrusy and it made a refreshingly shared bite for the two of us. The shrimp and grits with spicy peppers were unlike any I have ever had. Creamy grits smothered with a smokey, delicious sauce with delicate heat from the sauteed peppers. The shrimp were bite sized and tender and sweet. I could make this a meal all by itself along with some of the fresh sourdough bread that they presented at the table. Keeping with my latest trend, I went with a lobster and littleneck stew with tomato, capers, chick peas and saffron. This definitely had a Mediterranean flair to it and I think I detected some cumin or other spice blend that really warmed up the dish. I loved it. The little necks were tender and sweet and the lobster already in bite size really soaked up the flavors. K went with the salmon with turnips, leeks and mustard sauce and I am so glad he did. He dubbed it the "best salmon dish" he has had in a long time and I have to agree. Pan-seared to create that crispy exterior and moist, perfectly cooked on the inside. The tangy mustard sauce accented it nicely and the sauteed veggies were a tasty addition. No room for dessert but we were celebrating a special occasion soooo we indulged. The lemon-buttermilk pudding with huckleberry sauce was recommended and was a perfect ending to our meal. This place is in a beautiful location with water views and outdoor seating in the summer time. inside a fireplace going and a nautical upscale vibe. I know to make a reservation especially as the season starts to change for future visits which we will be sure to make. read more

I brought my west coast aunts here for dinner on the first day of their visit. We got the scallops in corn puree with tomatoes & the fried oysters. The corn puree needed more oomph, but the scallops and tomatoes were perfect. The fried oysters were so good that my aunt, who has had a *lot* of fried oysters in her life, declared them the best she had ever had. And then we got dessert. Did you know that the Red Dory chef drives to Inman Square once a week to buy Christina's ice cream? And did you further know that Christina's burnt sugar (or salted caramel or ginger molasses) will be the best ice cream you have ever had in your life? Perfectly balanced, not too sweet, flavorful, rich. We made a stop at Christina's on our way to the North Shore two days later. My aunts bought a house 14 miles away four days later... and cited The Red Dory as one of the reasons why. The food is *that* good. I'm looking forward to meeting my aunts for dinner here at least a few times every season once they move. read more

Hello, I made the mistake of coming here with no endorsement, or looking up menu....my bad. I have to start this way because based on the two things we did find to try, the food must be great. But, those two things were the only things.......main courses excluded...(just came for quick bite...lunch), and it was "Mothers day"! Now if you're one who likes, squid, mussels, sardines, oysters, and such, these mostly dominated the menu, especially the apps! We just came in for some scallops, or chowder, fish...of some kind, none of which are here, except the monk fish offering. This place is for the refined palate, or folks who seek out fine dining....that's fine, it's probably spectacular! I heard they will be adding a "simple" lunch menu, soon. And as a suggestion, it would have helped the uninformed walkin to have a menu on display as soon as one enters, so they can see if it's for them. If you're reading this review you must have access to their menu, if I had know it, I wouldn't have gone....but, still glad I did, and I plan on returning....after Memorial Day. The 2 stars are for the lack of variety, not quality...but only in our case, like I said, we just don't care for all those variety of fish items in the apps. I wish them well, and hope they make it. read more

I just asked for a glass of ice and it was fine. OTHER INFO: They have a simple one page menu with higher end food, and a one page drink menu (dessert menu is provided after). We went on a Sunday and they have tapas noon to 8 PM. We ordered six tapas plates and split them between the two of us. The plates were really great. We got 1 Muhamarra and cloumage (sp?) Plate, 1 spicy cucumber plate, 1 carrots and harrissa plate, 1 polenta and mushroom plate, 1 pork ribs plate, and 1 fish sandwich plate. I tried everything except the fish sandwich which my SO said was the best fish sandwich hands down. I loved every plate that I tried. The size of the tapas plates were exactly what you should expect, but for those who don't normally eat tapas- the plates are very small. For example, the carrots plate probably had seven thin carrots and the ribs plate had two ribs. The presentation was very nice and all very tasty. Service was great and timely. Prices were what you would expect for a place like that in the area (above average). Salads were $7- 14, apps were $12-17, mains were $17-28. The tapas special is $6 per plate. We really liked the feel and atmosphere of the restaurant, and we caught a nice summer sunset too. They have outdoor and indoor seating. Most of the seating is inside. We also got the pudding with huckleberry sauce and cake with toasted hazelnuts for dessert. Both were fantastic. I think the pudding and huckleberry sauce wins out of the two. read more

The food here is very good! We had the tar tar, steak frites and swordfish and it was all so good! Things like the oil for the bread are a little bland and the 'homemade Bloody Mary mix' isn't as great as well if you're one who loves a great Bloody Mary, but overall, great spot, and all the employees are so nice! read more

So far I am not impressed. I know service is slow most places these days but this might be the worst I've ever experienced since covid. Not only did it take time to even come to the table after we were seated but then my cocktail got to the table before the bottled cola did. Now I'm sitting here waiting for my appetizer watching a table larger than mine that came in after me enjoy their entree. After seeing me writing this review the waitress confronted us about it. She was nice but also upset. We were honest with her and told her why we were not happy. This was still before we even got our appetizers. I appreciate her concern but after we told her why we weren't all that happy the service only got worse. I ended up going to the empty bar for the rest of my drinks. The manager did come out and talk to us. He was very apologetic. Covid/short staffed was the explanation which I already said I understand. But it doesn't explain my food coming out after a larger table sat after us and a coke coming well after a cocktail. He agreed and apologized again. Once the manager left though, we didn't see him or our waitress for a while to get our check. So still not much changed after they knew about the issues. He did buy our drinks for us though. With all of that being said... the food was absolutely fantastic. We had the mussels, clam chowder, ribs, and steak frites. All were excellent. The atmosphere inside is not that great especially when they are busy. I suggest sitting outside of its nice out. Inside is crowded and very loud. Maybe it was just a bad night for our waitress and we just had bad timing. She was clearly frazzled after she approached us and asked us about the review. We might go back again after eventually but only for takeout. read more

Outstanding food. We ate from the apps section only. The roast octopus was fantastic, cooked perfectly, followed by fried oysters, crab cakes with the highest ratio of meat I have ever seen. Oh and let's not forget the seafood salad. The average joe would have made the observation that the seafood was raw. But alas... no it was cooked minimally as possible which was perfect. Now for the negatives... not many for sure. The first would be the speed in which we were served. Partially my mistake by not specifying the speed desired. The other issue are basically housekeeping issues. When you seat guests in window seats you need to make sure the cob web collection (that was glistening in the sunlight) be cleaned periodically, like daily. All in all we'll be back for sure... and I will check for the web collection! read more

Under new ownership it was mighty fine. Our appetizers were the oysters and the beet salad. My husband felt that the oysters were previously shucked and refrigerated and took on some of the smells/tastes of other food. My salad was great but needed more greens and beets. The pesto was perfect. Entrees were bucatini with cauliflower (excellent) and salmon. The salmon sauce was great and it was presented over pylons of fingerling potatoes cooked to perfection. The other couple raved about their gnocchi and the simply perfect chowder. They also raved about the meatballs and fried octopus. We will be back but will not bring our grandson. The place did not seem kid friendly. The wine bar was hopping. The creme brulee and chocolate desserts were tempting but we were full. read more

Spectacular seafood! Unique flavor combinations. Started with seared sea scallops with caponata and Moroccan spices--loved the sweetness from the eggplant! The main event was lobster risotto--cooked to perfection with tomato, fennel and saffron. Warm chocolate cake was just the right amount of denseness and not too sweet. The service was on point, very friendly, I believe the waitress' name was Jillian. She was excellent! I had the swordfish and it was perfectly cooked over the grill outback. This place is amazing! My wife and I came on a friday night, and were blown away. The view is outstanding, overlooking the water. We each ordered an appetizer (chicken liver pate, and gnocchi with spinach puree). I was stepping out of my comfort zone with the pate, and was pleasantly surprized. The cornichon perfectly balanced the earthy tones of the pate. My wife could not stop raving about the gnocchi, wanting to return weekly just to indulge. Dinner consisted of butternut squash soup for myself, and monkfish casserole with house made sausage and pork belly for her. Both were homeruns, and stand out dishes! We finished off the evening with a bottle of delicious Cotes de Rhones, and some tasty deserts. I highly recommend to everyone looking for a great meal in a comfortable but upscale environment! Came for dinner with my fiancee--we would both highly recommend. Service was great--we showed up 30 minute early for our reservation and the host sat us after just a few minutes; waiter was very friendly and attentive. The Siesta cocktail was a bit too herbal/bitter for me with the combination of grapefruit and bitters. The ceviche was outstanding. The tomatoes with buratta and salad with poached tuna fingerling salad were both very tasty. My fiancee's steak was cooked a perfect medium, very flavorful, with deliciously crispy fries. Work your way through the menu, don't get caught by the headlines or bold print. Read the ingredients and you will discover a great meal. We came for our 22nd anniversary dinner and were not disappointed. At first glance we both questioned the menu because seemingly everything in it was "different". The apps had grilled octopus and sautéed calamari not fried. There was peppered steak and spicy peppers on the sword fish so we started to worry as my wife won't even eat black pepper. Ultimately we were thrilled. We had the summer chowder and the fisherman's soup to start. The chowder was cream based with corn, scallops and crab. The soup was a little more spicy with chunks of seafood in a red based soup might have been tomato. We then split the lobster risotto and the pork and veal meatballs with crispy orecchiette. The risotto was rich and creamy with chunks of lobster. It tasted like a hearty homemade stock made with bunches of lobster bodies had been used. The pasta dish was great -they fried up the orecchiette after it was boiled and then added the meatballs and a light brown sauce or broth that was perfect. It wasn't the least bit heavy. We finished the meal with the Lemon buttermilk pudding with huckleberry sauce. The lemon was sweet and lemony the huckleberry was tart, blueberry like and a good compliment. The pudding or cake like ingredient was perfect. We also had the summer berry parfait which had blueberries in it also wonderful. read more

Delightful! Everything was perfect. The grilled sardines appetizer (which I have back for 3 times in two weeks) are fantastic. Super fresh, slightly charred. The Linguine with red clams sauce was particularly good. Mopped up the sauce with the homemade rustic bread. The the roast chicken was also a hit at our table. Well, I've been back to The Red Dory and am pleased to report that I still really like what they're doing. We started at the bar with drinks and oysters while we waited for our table. The Sakonnet Point oysters were so fresh and wonderfully briny. Once seated, we shared the Grilled Octopus. As with the first time I tried this dish, it was again delicious and I hope they never take it off the menu. Although, I could swear the portion was much smaller this time. Hmmmm...... I had the Skillet Roasted Skate for my main meal and I was so excited to try something I've never had before. The skate itself was delicious and flavorful and seemed to be cooked just right. I do have to say on this dish however, that the sauce and vegetable accoutrements were crazy salty. Yes, there were capers in the dish but I think they also must have added a lot of salt because I my mouth was burning and parched by the time I finished eating. My husband had the Bucatini and he really like the flavor but again, his dish was also very salty. I do have to mention that I was a bit disappointed to see the waitstaff just as timid and "green" as they were the first time I dined here. I was hoping those kinks would've been worked out and I think it'd be great if the waitstaff were polished up a bit in terms of knowing the ingredients and the dishes and also in terms of dealing with dining customers. For this particular meal, we had FOUR people tend to our table. Thus forcing us to repeat requests and clarify matters that had been settled with other waitstaff members. Overall, I still like the food here and I love that you can get seafood dishes that are more original than most of the restaurants in this area and I will definitely be back again soon. read more

The meal we had was exceptional from start to finish. It was apparent that each course was prepared with care and each bite was absolutely delicious. The waitstaff also made this a great experience. Giving opinions on dishes and letting us sample the wine before committing completed the experience. We started with the ceviche and octopus and decided to add the Sakonnet oysters. All were delicious. For our main meal two of us ordered the lamb shank special of the night and one ordered the pan cooked skate. Not a bite left on anyone's plate. Food was cooked perfectly, and absolutely delicious! Additionally, they generously included sour dough bread, and the most amazing chocolate chip cookies! Wow! Where do I start?? This was a random last minute choice for a place to eat. We were across the street fishing at stone bridge and saw this little restaurant and decided to give it a try. What a find! Spectacular fresh seasonal and local food but at reasonable prices. (Fine dining without the gigantic price tag). The server herself was awesome but I didn't get her name. She told us that the chef owner had also been nominated for the James Beard award. I can see why! We sat outside due to the perfect weather and I am glad because I felt underdressed in a t shirt and jeans compared to the other clientele there although the restaurant is a dressy casual vibe. Our favorite dish ordered tonight was the bluefish cakes. Mostly fish and hardly any binder and bursting with flavor. The chowder was a close second. The local squid was expertly sautéed and my husband loved the linguine with clams. The lemon buttermilk pudding was the closest thing I've tasted to my great grandmothers lemon sponge pie. Very tasty. This place will now be my go to for fresh seasonal fare. A true local gem! read more

Wanted to like this place, since it was recommended, but it was very disappointing . Went on a Saturday and was shocked that they had no specials. Menu is very limited. Bread has a nasty black crust that is almost inedible. My wife ordered linguine with clams- most clams were rubbery. I had the sirloin which had nice seasoning but 20% was gristle. Surprised that a $28 steak came with fries and not something more appropriate. I wish the owner the best of luck, but we won't be back. read more
