Cool small spot with homemade kinda food and service. Just tried it for the first time on Xmas eve and will most definitely return again and again.

Although I wish the menu included some breakfast staples like biscuits gravy, blueberry pancakes and the like, I still respect red maple for its integrity. It's straightforward, opens before the sun comes up and quiet in the mornings.

I was having some work done to my car in Closter and after dropping off the car, me and my sister needed to have breakfast. A quick search didn't reveal too much but Red Maple looked like the place to try. Walking in you're quickly transported to something reminiscent of what you'd maybe expect to see in a 1950's diner (minus the checkerboard floor and shiny chrome). Red Maple is a intimate small town (where everybody knows your name) vibe breakfast place. In fact, several customers came in and the staff clearly greeted them by name; clearly indicating many were regulars. I ordered a full stack of pancakes topped with fresh blueberries and they were excellent. I love my pancakes, and these were expertly made with the perfect thickness and more importantly an awesome fluffy texture. Blueberries were very fresh as they had a nice pop to them when I bit into them. The fresh butter was great and the pancake syrup (only slight negative was that it was not maple syrup) was very welcomely served warmed. My sister enjoyed the full stack of French toast that was equally excellent with a nice texture (not soggy but not too bite through). There was a pleasant hint of cinnamon as well in the batter which also added to the flavor. Her dish also came with sausage which she indicated was very tasty. We also ordered two sides in home fries and Taylor ham. The home fries were cooked with a slight crispiness that was yummy. Taylor ham was actually my first time eating this NJ staple and luckily my first Taylor ham left me very happy as it too was yummy. Overall a very filling, honest to goodness, hearty old-school breakfast done very well; and who doesn't like that!

So, we moved to Closter 5 years ago and have JUST discovered RED MAPLE. These are the hole in the wall, greasy spoon, old time breakfast joints you search for when traveling to some unknown destination. But to find one in your very own back yard is just too good to be true. Perfectly cooked eggs (any style), a generous portion of crispy bacon and hash browns (comes with a miniature cup of OJ - from concentrate - and a cup of coffee); plus a short stack of fantastically light pancakes and local friendliness, makes this is our new favorite breakfast spot. Thank you Red Maple.

Great local spot. Food is always fresh and served with a smile. Staff is friendly and attentive and the prices are on point. Go to spot if your ever in Closter.

Great breakfast luncheonette. My BF grew up the next town over in Demerest and this is a old family favorite.

Greasy spoon, good food but the seating could use a deep clean and an update. The benches have zero cushion left. Very nice staff!

The best breakfast! Sometimes service is a little backed up but worth the wait! It's backed up because people know this place is the best!

The 130 Shop (Located in Riveredge Row Strip Mall)…read more35 Riveredge Rd. Tenafly, NJ 07670 French Dip Tater Tots Marshmallow Soft Serve Appearance: 10/10 Taste: 10/10 Located in the Riveredge Row Strip Mall at the intersection of Riveredge Road and Tenafly Road is a locally owned high end sandwich shop. Let's check out the two course meal I explored: French Dip: This signature sandwich was loaded with shaved prime rib, bits of bell peppers and was topped with melted swiss cheese. It was perfectly diagonally sliced on an Italian baguette. The beef was tender and juicy; also included was a savory au jus and a sharp horseradish sauce which both enhanced the flavor. I was more than satisfied down to the very last bite. Tater Tots: The tots make an excellent side to the sandwich. They were crunchy on the outside while soft and pillowy on the inside. The ketchup is a pretty decent, but the garlic aioli wins the dipping contest by a long shot. Marshmallow Soft Serve: To close out the meal, I explored this heavenly dessert. Roasted marshmallow is added to the base of the ice cream. The appearance may be simple and plain Jane, but its rich, smooth, and creamy taste is in a league of its own. As a bonus, a complimentary water cooler with ice and lemon slices is available. If you do not wish to drink water, a variety of cans and bottles are available for purchase. Thank you server Hailey and the cooking crew for preparing a flawless meal. #the130shop #130shoptenafly #frenchdipsandwich #marshmallowsoftserve

What does one do on the day between Ash Wednesday and Friday in the first week of Lent? Eat MEAT!!!…read more If you are looking for a fantastic food oriented small business to accomplish this task, @the130shop has a menu full of meaty goodness. #The130Shop 's powers that be decided that @BigDudesBigFoods needed to try everything on menu! We started with the "French Dip" with plenty of au jus. Batting second was a delicious "BaconGrilledCheese" with cheddar & chihuahua cheese and some savory tomato soup for dipping. Joe & I hit up the "1/2. LB Meatball" samich next which was so good that you think that you are at a place that strictly makes meatball parm sandwiches. We tried the "130 Cheeseburger next with bacon lettuce and tomato . This double burger masterpiece is piled high and tasty too. As though there was any room on the table in came the "Buttermilk Fried Chicken" with cherry peppers, coleslaw, pickles and sherry Aïoli. That is no ordinary chicken sandwich. Also in this cruise buffet rivaling feast was a "Chicago Style Hotdog" with the works, perfectly cooked shoestring fries and crispy "tater tots." There was not a bad bite in the bunch. My favorite was the Bacon Grilled Cheese and I think Joe's was the 130 Cheeseburger but he also liked the horseradish sauce that came with the French Dip. Not that we want to disappoint our followers but there were doggy bags involved. The 130 Shop is really cool spot in Tenafly,NJ with a great staff and amazing chef.‍ It's part of a trio of establishments in the area with 130 Club and 130 Social. If you are ever in the area you've got to stop in. It's only a half hour from Yankees Stadium if you want to grab a bite once you are back in NJ. #BigDudesBigFoods #SupportSmallBusiness #BDBFCertified #BDBF

I was amazed when I found this little hole-in-the-wall gem in one of my old haunts, Closter. I decided to give it a try. I got two bowls of the beef combo Pho, a single order of the regular beef Pho, the Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich, and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. These items are the easiest to judge, as most of the Vietnamese restaurants around Bergen County and the surrounding area kind of fail, choosing to cater to the population (skimping on spice, choosing western ingredients over authentic Asian ingredients, etc.). When I picked up my call-in order, the woman at the counter was very nice, though not Vietnamese and neither was the cook (not a problem at all, just an observation). She handed my order and I paid with a nice tip. I made it almost half way home when I got a call from the restaurant, and the same person told me she forgot to hand me the Vietnamese Iced Coffee and apologized. I made a u-turn and drove back to Ma Mi Eatery and picked up my drink. None of this exchange knocks any points against them, in fact, I was happy they called me. When I got home and unpacked everything, it all looked pretty authentic. I started with the combo beef Pho, adding all the toppings, plus the condiments of Hoisin sauce and Sriracha. What was missing was the fresh Thai basil! Then I read the menu and saw that they put the basil IN the soup when they serve it, so when I got home, all the basil was wilted. That's a shame because every single AAA Pho restaurant in Westminster, California serves their Pho with fresh Thai basil so customers can control how much basil they want, and to prevent wilting. That is my only real critique. Otherwise, the Pho was delicious, the broth was flavorful, and the really LOADED the soup with beef. Seriously, a lot of places in Westminster aren't that generous with brisket, but Ma Mi made my day. The Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich was delicious, and loaded with all the appropriate toppings and condiments, though I wish they packed the wet ingredients (pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, jalapeño) so the bread wouldn't get soggy, which it did, slightly. The bread itself was not the best bread I've had, typically, the bread used in most Vietnamese sandwich shops have a flaky crust and airy soft bread inside. This one a bit coarse on the crust with a heavy crunch. The interior was okay though. All in all, it was a great effort. The next time I revisit my hometown, I'll be sure to stop by Ma Mi Eatery for sure.

Farm Cafe 40 Old Hook Road…read moreCloster, NJ 07624 Homemade Hibiscus Iced Tea Farm Burger This country style cafe is located on the Abram Demaree Homestead farm. This building has been around since 1700s and was formerly a general store and tavern. All of the menu items are freshly prepared in house using organic ingredients directly from the farm. These are a couple of the lunch menu items I explored: Homemade Hibiscus Iced Tea: This herbal beverage has a reddish color; its appearance is different from an original iced tea. The drink was very refreshing with a slightly tart taste. Farm Burger: This ounce angus patty includes lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and a secret sauce. I also added yellow American cheese for a $1 up charge. I cannot identify the ingredients of the secret sauce, hence the name. It was really tasty and I requested a small extra cup on the side for dipping. For the most part, this was a tasty burger. Next time, I will request to have the patty cooked medium well because I feel a well done burger compromises its flavor. This cafe also serves as a farmers market; they sell grocery items such as homemade honey and farm fresh eggs. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating. I highly recommend dining in so you can take in the country atmosphere. #farmcafe #abramdemareehomesteadfarm #farmburger #hibiscusicedtea #closternj
