Good sauce, pickles, and onions. The fries were freshly cut and not over-fried. They were slightly crispy and full of flavor. When you compare this to something like 5 Guys, the price is similar and the quality is better. The star of the show was the milkshake. Nothing fancy, but completely delicious. High-quality ice cream hand mixed with milk. What more do you need? Not too sweet at all. Just a rock solid and pleasurable experience. A lot of people leaving negative reviews seem to focus on the prices, but I think that is misplaced. We carried out 2 burgers, onion rings, fries and a milk shake. Our total was $57! Admittedly, Carry out is tough, but the packaging didn't help anything here. Foil wrap and paper boats. Maybe if we ate in, it would have been better. Burgers were soggy and onion rings were super greasy. The sweet relish likely was the cause of so much wet bun, but everything was steamed, wet and disappointing. The Region sauce was on the side and the containers were maybe 1/4 filled. I actually like smash burgers. In fact it's my preferred burger style (i.e. Red Hot Ranch). I don't care for double cheeseburgers or thick burger patties. I think it throws off the buger to bun ratio. The smash preparation is common in Indiana (i.e. Working Man's Friend) and The Region does a respectable version. I ordered delivery so I won't hold the onion rings or fries against them. I'm sure they're better fresh outta the grease. The Region sauce is too sweet for a burger. I'll stick to traditional toppings next time & get sauce on the side. Not a best burger contender, but I wouldn't have any issue ordering again. Next time I'll try to dine in. 3.4 stars for now. I had the regular cheeseburger. It dwarfs the bun and is a smashed burger very thin and crispy. The burger was a little too crispy for me. I might try the Region burger or patty melt if I go again. The onion rings were really good though expensive at $8 and the root beer fountain soda was good but cup is about 12 oz and they don't have refills. Total cost of $ 26 was very high for the meal. I've come here a few times for lunch and while I see people's point in saying that the price tag can run a little high but that it's worth it. The burgers here are simple and I would say aren't going to win any awards but their straight forward formula of having a simple well-made burgers have in fact, won them awards. The burgers here are freshly made and you won't have a bunch of crazy options or 'gourmet' ingredients. Fresh beef patty cooked right there, onion, relish and sauce, simple and tasty; my mom called it 'country style,' when I took her for lunch here and I guess it can be described that way. I decided to go for the double and add chili to it and it was a delightfully sloppy mess, with this Texas style chili (no beans!) The fries too are just really good-crispy, not steak fries but not shoestring fries either. What's more is that there's only one person, the owner who greets everyone, takes orders, cooks and still manages to be friendly. This is a smash burger joint I had been wanting to try for years and finally got the chance to a few weeks ago. It's a small place with seating for about 12 and they have seating outside when weather permits, in a nice area. I thought the stools for the tables by the windows were a too high for the tables (maybe I should've sat somewhere else lol). Service is nice straight to the point and fast, whether it be cooking or cleaning tables. It's really good and probably one of the best smash burgers in the city. Double cheese Smash Burger was absolutely delicious. Came out super hot, buns and all. Strawberry Milk shake perfectly sweet - not crazy thick, milkshakes are more fun to drink without straw in my opinion. Fries salty and crispy. Owner was very nice. Individual burgers are pricey but you'll walk away satisfied or sleepy. I had seen The Region on a number of must try Chicago burger spots. Its not too far from my house so I decided to give it a try. There are only like 2-3 tables inside with a couple tables for outdoor seating. It really seems like a grab and go establishment. The burgers were huge thin smash burgers. The reminded me of a big version of Culver's. The burgers lacked seasoning. The sauce was interesting and a little sweet for my liking. The onion rings were really crispy and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Like I mentioned this is really a gourmet fast food operation so the staff is really just focused on churning out the food. The service was fast and efficient, but not a reason I would come back. Really enjoyed my smash burger with cheese here! Wish there was another slice of cheese on the burger but it was still so good! I rarely finish my food before my partner but THIS I smashed! I didn't even mind the cheap bun that falls apart as soon as you bite into it. The relish and special sauce are a nice touch to the flavor of the meat! The shake and the fries were okay. If you like fries that taste like potato chips because they've been fired that long then you'll like these fries. I don't so they weren't the best to me. Come for the food not the ambiance. We went here because we saw it on a Chicago's Best Burgers list and it was #1 for some reason. While the burger, fries, onion rings, and sauce were all delicious, there was room for improvement. Food-wise no complaints except I would expect more than 8 small/medium sized onion rings for $8.50 per order. Our total for 2 double Regionette burgers, 1 large french fries, and onion rings + 15% (no table service) tip came to $47.34 which seemed like a lot considering you order at a counter and it didn't include heat. Everyone there including us kept our jackets and hats on while we ate. Even the girl taking orders wore her coat. Not sure why they didn't turn the heat on. It definitely took away from the enjoyment of the meal. Also the place is pretty dingy with about 4 tables, and our 2-person table had stools at an average height table so despite not being a large person, the tops of my legs were hitting the underside of the table due to the height of the seat. The insanity-style burger is to die for. (perhaps literally for some of you) Curtis, the owner, must be Superman because he seems to do pretty much everything on his own, and has got to be one of the friendliest guys I've met. The burgers aren't your typical burger. They're basically flattop burgers that are smashed into oblivion which creates crispy edges and kind of an "overdone" taste. It's certainly not for everyone, but if you haven't tried it you should. The Region sauce is mayo-based and a tad tangy, a bit spicy, but I think it's great. If you get your burger "insanity" it basically means you're getting your burger topped with jalapenos, habeneros, AND some of Dave's mixed in with the Region sauce. Burgers here are completely satisfying and gluttonous. The burgers have a high fat ratio making it a beautiful guilty pleasure and a decadent mouthful with each bite that oozes with flavor and the special sauce they put on top. Definitely not some place to come for a first date but a great place to kick back on the small patio with a burger and some fries. Be prepared with lots of napkins to wipe your mouth and hands down between each bite!! Burgers don't come with sides. I ended up ordering onion rings but for $7.50, it's a steep price for what you get though it's definitely homemade in house which I appreciate. The last 24 hours I've done a variety of "Firsts" that I have not done in (some) 14 months. I've: #1 - Uber'ed #2 - Flew on an Airplane #3 - Ate indoors #4 - Jogged on a lakeshore (Lake Michigan) #3 was The Region! This small Hamburger joint in the Roscoe Village section of Chicago is making some crazy good Smash Burgers. Today I had one of these beauties with an extra whack of their secret sauce and grilled onions. It was really really good. With a side of fries and a Pepsi (I seldom do sodas); the Pepsi part was a like pairing a big Cab with a ribeye steak. I know that comparison is a stretch, but it was the first thing that popped in my head after my first bite and first sip. The man handling the order desk was this jovial, very nice guy. He made our first "Dine In" experience feel safe and sane. That was a big plus. One tip though; as good as everything was, tell the cook (on ordering) to hold the salt. I'm not sure if it was my Boujee L.A. taste buds vs. a Midwest palette, but it was a tad salty for me. When I go back (and I will go back this trip) I will tell them to hold the salt. So now my post "Hunkering Chops" have made the restaurant leap. I can only hope and pray this is the start of new things to come and old things to vanish! read more

Friends who know that you love to eat have a tendency to think they really know your palate. I got a recommendation to try out a triple cheeseburger called the annihilator, which was the first indication of a friend not getting it since I've been slowly taking red meat out of my diet. Nevertheless, I ordered a double cheeseburger called a Diggity (sic). I have not been one for fast food burgers for well over 20 years and gourmet burgers don't fascinate me either. If I can eat a burger without loading it up with condiments, I'm good. The double cheeseburger here was good but it was a struggle burger with the crispy edges. They make sure you don't complain about not having any meat. Yet, you get some crunch with each bite. The beer battered onion rings were good. They use real onions and there was only a hint of beer in the batter, which meant you can taste the onions. That was good. The chocolate shake was good, as shakes go. It's a small walk-up with only a few tables for sit-down. I have a feeling this place fills up during warmer months. If you like burgers from "independent" cafes, this may do it for you. Love the burger. It comes with a pink sauce that looms like strawberry quick, taste a little tangy like a raspberry vinaigrette. Pretty refreshing, helps to cut down the grease from the burger. I got a burger delivered from here today and even after steaming in its foil wrapper for 15 minutes, it was still incredibly good, I hate delivery services but sometimes they are a necessary evil (napping baby at home that I couldn't leave!). If the burger is this good delivered I can't imagine how good it would be in person. Lots of burgers in chicago but I liked that this one had incredible flavor and texture thanks to the extremely smashed beef and wasn't enormous or full of gratuitous toppings. The Region has become one of my favorite burgers in the city coming in at #3 in my burger rankings (behind Au Cheval & Owen & Engine)! The cheese, onions, relish, and Region sauce mix perfectly. The region sauce is pink, but is sweet, slightly tangy, and runny. The fries were great too. Salty and very crispy. They were not soggy whatsoever, which is impressive. Strawberry shake hit the spot too! The Region's food traveled extremely well and that's been rare during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two were occupied and the other two were empty but FILTHY! Went to the bathroom and that was gross too! As stated on Chicago's Best, this burger is all about the meat. The patties do not hide behind layers of toppings and sauces. Rather, the flavor of the beef is accented with moderate, tasteful toppings. The thin crispy edges of the patties are a nice touch. The hot dog was a bit weird, and definitley not on-par with the quality of the burger. But this is a burger place, so maybe it was weird that I ordered a hot dog in the first place. There's something so wonderful about going to this place and taking in the whole menu and realize that they make an amazing turkey burger in addition to the smaller regionette 4oz burger. And bonus! they make milkshakes and their fries are hand cut, perfectly fried just like the big crunchy onion rings. It's wonderful taking in the whole space but it's not a good place to have a big group gathering I imagine in the summer people can get their food to go and sit out around Roscoe Village with their burger in hand. So after all of this went down, the owner of The Region reached out to me personally to recognize that this shouldn't have happened, he refunded my order and gave me some context on all of these delivery services can be really toxic for restaurants. Just one part of what has made the last couple years unbearable for most restaurants. Unfortunately there is no delivery option outside of these services (largely because of the services themselves). Lesson here is to avoid using these apps, and I'll be either picking up or dining at The Region next time. Their burgers are too good and their owner is someone I want to support. read more
