This review was about my visit on May 5, 2013. I ordered the large cheeseburger plate with the sides of corn nuggets and the spicy potato wedges. I would like to start out by saying that the large cheeseburger here.. is one of the best cheeseburgers that I've ever had. It is ridiculous how tasty and melt in your mouth that burger is. Although I will say this, it is absolutely 100% messy. You will go through many towels if you order this burger, but it is well worth it. The corn nuggets were good also, but just average quality. The only problem I had during this visit was the spicy potato wedges. When they gave us our food, the cashier told us that my spicy potato wedges would be out shortly that they took longer to cook.. I gave her about ten minutes before approaching the counter to inquire about them and she acted like she had no clue that she owed me some (all of them). To make it short, they forgot to cook them, which is why I'm deducting a star from the review. They did give us a piece of pie for my wait though. All in all I've eaten at this place quiet a few times and order the same thing every time. The restaurant is small on the inside and can get very busy. You order at the counter and take a seat or stand around. My advice is to not sit around the counter or the door if you don't want random people standing over you while you eat, taking it that you even get a seat. The name says Drive In and that may have been the case years ago but no longer. However this little BBQ dive has a smoker out back which lures hungry travelers in with the smell of hickory smoke from the smoker located out back. I drove in to see the parking lot full of cars at a few minutes before 5pm on a Thursday. I knew I was in for a treat if the locals congregate here. Neither the door nor the windows indicated a cash/check establishment, which would be nice to know before walking in. I'm glad I had cash! Whew! Hard to believe they accept checks! Customers order at the counter. There is a steady stream of people taking orders to-go non-stop...a minimum of 10 at a time. (Heads up, there is a 4% surcharge added to To-Go orders.). Also, their phone rang non-stop with orders coming in. I had $11.55 in my pocket. I was able to order a BBQ meat plate with two sides (cole slaw and fried okra) with a bottomless unsweet tea (I added a packet of Stevia from my purse because the unsweet tea had a very drying effect on my palate) for less than $10. I didn't see a tip jar, so I didn't offer one. I sat at a wooden table on a wooden bench . Tables accommodate 2-5 people comfortably. Restaurant relies on natural light from windows and forgoes the overhead lights during the day. A nice change of environment from the norm in most places. Country music plays at a slightly elevated level. Not uncomfortable but maybe a smidge louder than necessary. It's important to note that this family owned business (since 1958) prepares good to order. Nothing comes out of the kitchen quickly. Ensure you have adequate time to wait because you will. I waited about 20 minutes, maybe a bit longer due to how busy it was. My food number was called out. Service was a black plastic plate with plastic ware on a red tray with a wrapped piece of buttered Texas bread. The portion sizes were generous. Coleslaw homemade, okra fried crispy, and bbq delicious and not too heavily smoked though I felt it was overly sauced. I wish I had asked for the sauce on the side so that I could enjoy the meet even more than I did. The Texas bread was buttered with fake butter which was disappointing and the amount of butter was excessive. A quick tip: you must bus your own table. Bring red tray with all contents back up to counter. I am rather impressed with this eating establishment. What a treat as I head out back home after spending two weeks working in the area. read more

We ordered 2 hamburger steaks (which have always come smothered with gravy & onions) but still we specified that we wanted them that way. We got them to go, and they were tied up in a bag when we picked them up. The orders there are normally right so we had no reason to doubt they would be this time. When we got home the hamburger steak had no gravy. We called them to see if they could remake them, because by the time we drove back down there the food would be cold. We were told (quite rudely) that they could not remake them, that our gravy was sitting on the counter and it was our fault we didn't get it. Supposedly the person we talked to was the owner or manager, whoever was in charge. He was extremely rude. The gravy was NOT sitting with the food we picked up, and why wouldn't it have been in the bag with the rest of it? He was also very rude to my husband when he went back down there to pick it up. Or why wouldn't it have been ON the steak? Once we got it home it didn't taste like the gravy that is normally on the steak, I don't know if it's because it's normally cooked on the steak or what. I am going to be bold enough to make this statement: this is some of the BEST bbq in the state of Alabama! This delicious pork has not changed one single bit since I went to college here in the '90's. The Rocket has been in business for far too long and has the awards and articles to show for it. You pull into the parking lot and that smell from the massive outdoor bbq pit just welcomes you. The burgers are amazing with a good smoky flavor and a little char on them. I've always ordered their bbq salad and this thing is massive with their buttered Texas toast! I share it with my daughter and order a side of their baked beans which are great with a thick rich sweet sauce and bits of pork in them. Of course you can never go wrong with a good 'ol pork sandwich. This pork is always perfect. Smoky flavor, not dry with a nice homemade sauce. Hot dogs, corn dogs, chicken tenders, they have 'em as well. Fries, potato wedges, macaroni & cheese bites, corn nuggets, take your pick. It's all just so good. The hamburger is good. The barbecue was so-so. The meat had a lot of fat and 'junk' in it that I had to pick through. So, I have eaten there twice recently and both times the burger/barbecue buns were a bit crumbly. I can never understand why any restaurant would ruin a good sandwich that could be a GREAT sandwich just because they don't insist on using really fresh bread. Come on restaurant owners- weigh the cost of fresh bread against the loss of a repeat customer! Also, there are no trash cans in the place (lack of space, I suppose), so you hand your leftovers/ trash tray back to an employee through the same window where they are placing the fresh food for pickup. This is a fresh cheeseburger, topped generously with shredded lettuce, diced onion, mayo, bbq sauce, and the plenty of the most delicious crispy pickles, it is a big ole mess of a burger and so worth the drive! You can order the burger basket, or go for the twin burger basket: 2 of these fantastic burgers in one basket, either is surrounded by awesome fries! On to the BBQ - it's good, it's smokey, saucy, and fatty - not the gross kind of fatty, I mean that it has the rich flavorful kind of fatty flavor that makes pork so very yummy. I strongly recommend ordering the BBQ sandwich with a scoop of slaw on the top of it, not because it's dry (it is definitely not dry) but because you want that crunchy creamy goodness to balance out the rich tangy bbq. Best of all, you do not have to choose between a burger and the bbq, they have a basket that comes with one of each!! I strongly recommend this option for your first trip here. A note: all of the food here appears to be made to order, so it takes a little longer than you might expect. This will tempt some people (people like me) to want to call in their order and carry out. Don't do that. This is the kind of food that needs to eaten fresh, hot, and when it first arrives at your table. We live in weaver,AL and we went to the rocket in Jacksonville and ordered two meals with sides of fries and baked beans , they closed our food up and put it in a white bag and tied the bag we got home and began to eat our food and noticed a dead fly in my baked beans , so I called them and let them know that I had a dead fly in my baked beans the lady told me that it was no way and it had to be from our house lmao, remember the baked beans were totally closed with a lid on it and never opened until we got home to eat our food lol but she insisted that it wasn't them and she was very defensive and very unprofessional about the issue and I didn't want a refund or another meal I was just letting them know about the fly in my food and maybe they could watch out for flies in their restaurant .
