This is by far the best BBQ I have had in Alabama or do I dare say... anywhere? The pulled pork has very little fat if any at all. The baked beans are phenomenal. And the coleslaw??? Is it possible to marry a restaurant? I love this place. The only complaint I have about The Rocket is their seating. I've eaten there several times and have tried a variety of items from their menu. I normally downrate or refuse to return to places that only take cash but I'll give them a pass because the food is so good. The eating area sucks but everything else is pretty good. Maybe one day they will offer a spicier sauce too. The bbq sauce they do have is very good but I like some heat. read more

Just ate here after reading another review. I must say I was surprised to enjoy the food so much. I went straight to left field and tried something normally I wouldn't, that being said, I ordered the "Rocket Dog"...WOW was it good. I love the pulled pork. It's way better than cooter browns. Their fried mac n cheese is to die for. The spicy potato wedges and beer battered onion rings are also great. Wasn't a fan of the other kind of onion rings they had (homemade I think). read more

Best BBQ and onion rings (beer battered) in Calhoun County. Started in 1958 the building is small and dated but homey. You order at the counter and seat yourself. Definitely one of Jacksonville's best places to eat. read more

This was not my first time at The Rocket but in the past I have had the barbecue which I enjoyed very much. However tThis time our order was not correct. My stepson had told us that the burgers were great, so after a busy Saturday we decided to buy hamburgers for the family. My husband went to town to order burgers for the five of us. Two of the burgers should have been dry (no sauce) and he paid extra for tomatoes which was not on any of the burgers. We live just over 10 miles away and it is not worth the drive back to get the order fixed. He called the manager and she took his name and said they would comp the meal the next time we were there. I will update my review next time we go there. read more

The Rocket is a hometown staple of Jacksonville. They have good greasy spoon specialties that includes everything from burgers to barbecue and dinner plates. I have eaten there for years, but it seems the owners are no longer invested in quality regarding the ordering or management. I recently ordered a burger and a hamburger steak platter and sent a family member to pick it up. The burger was not what I ordered, so I called and let them know (nicely--I get that orders can be messed up). The order taker said they would make me another-no problem. A few minutes later, the unnamed manager called and said I need to bring the wrong burger back to them. I live on the opposite side of town from the restaurant and had already sent someone to go get the replacement (without sending the other burger back). I explained this to the manager and she said she had to see the wrong burger? Aside from feeling like this wasn't very sanitary having been opened, and already placed in my trash, I explained and she insisted. The burger was returned, without any apology for inconvenience or customer service of any kind. Very disappointing. read more

Let me start by saying that I did get a lot of food for the price. I am from the Memphis area and was visiting family when they had me eat here. The burgers were decent, but the barbecue tasted like Mamwich over pork. If I want a lot of okay food for the price I will eat here again, but don't expect good food. read more

Love this place. Everybody who works here has always been very polite and friendly. We always get the double BBQ w/fries or the double cheese burgers w/fries. Prices aren't to bad on the wallet but yes MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CASH. NO CREDIT CARDS OR DEBIT CARDS ALLOWED. Some of the family has even pick up trays of the BBQ and other stuff for parties. Unless you want overpriced frozen (not fresh) food that is overly greasy with terrible customer service when you politely tell them they messed up then this place is for you. Very limited seating. They're not accustomed to the 21st century no credit/debit card reader they only take cash. The seating itself is hard wood if you have a bad back or bad anything dining in is not for you. The plating they give you is inexpensive styrofoam. It gives a hill billy vibe instead of southern food. They're still stuck in the past from their prime years. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone in all honesty. I would recommend Taco Bell or Walmart chicken over the expensive frozen not fresh food. (I do understand they never said it's fresh but with how expensive the food is it should be fresh. Spending 30$ on two people for small plates of food is over priced and not worth It if you're getting overly frozen food that's not fresh probably not even local. ) 2.5/10 stars. Might I also add after writing the review they block me on every social media possible they have so my review can not be seen. Never will I recommend poor quality and service to anyone. read more

I have been going to The Rocket for several years now and I can honestly say I am beyond disappointed. I have a really bad allergy and I have always made them aware of it and they have worked to accommodate to it. Well recently I went in the messed up my order and the employees where rude. I called the OWNER to complain they where more worried about their employees breaking a rule then anything else and on top of that I was told they didn't want me back because of my allergies. I have gone to many, many restaurant's and have NEVER been turned away but they told me I was not allowed to come back because they stayed busy and didn't want to take the extra time to make sure it was made right. I understand all businesses have the right to do this but if it means loosing a long time standing customer because they feel like I don't matter then that shows what sort of people they are. If you have any sort of allergies be prepared to get turned away or treated rudely. read more
