The Rolling Rooster is definitely the comfort food I need during a cold winter day. It's also the first local fried chicken restaurant that I've ever tried in Austin. I usually go to chains for satiating my fried chicken craving, but I decided to go local for the sake of Yelp. I had their combo that included three wings, three fish, and a side of my choosing. I chose the macaroni n cheese side, and was disappointed. The cheese wasn't even melted fully, and had a bitter after taste. I wish I got the waffle fries instead. The fish was okay, but it definitely had a nice crunch from the frying job their kitchen did. The wings are the stars of the show. These are real full sized wings, not the mini wings that you snack on at places like Buffalo Wings. The wings were fried to perfection, and were juicy when I took a bite out of them. Parking is not a problem. The rest of the shopping center is dead with the exception of The Rolling Rooster. You may be hard pressed to find a parking space right in front of the restaurant, but the strip mall has pretty of other options. You should visit after 1:30. The restaurant was still crowded even when I arrived at 1:00. But I didn't sit down at the restaurant until almost 2. So the service was very attentive, and it stayed attentive even when more customers started coming. The customers are what you expect of the population of Pflugerville. The people that frequent this place are usually adults without kids. Thankfully The Rolling Rooster is quiet even when a steady amount of customers are flowing into the restaurant. read more

I'm not a melt your face type, so I guess someone might find it closer to mild but for the avg bear it's got kick. The bun is a hamburger bun, it's fine. The fries that came with were overdone/dry. I wouldn't mind if they were a little spicier and had a little less cheese, but no question these are well above average poppers. Shrimp - Big, fresh, tasty, juicy, excellent. Catfish - Perhaps the best catfish I've ever had. Really nicely fried and quite tasty. Waffles - Yes you want one. Get the sides too, but don't make the mistake of skipping the waffle with your shrimp, catfish or chicken. This place has been on my bookmark list for while and after seeing the reviews, my boyfriend and I came in having high expectations. We started off with their hush puppies which was good. I also had one of their special drinks, Blue RooLong Island which the waitress said was equivalent to an Adios MF. Oh Boy was it strong, by the end of our dinner I was pretty tipsy. He was pretty disappointed by the chicken tender and mentioned that it was pretty dry. The waffle fries wasn't anything special. The fries weren't evenly fried as some were pretty soft but they did have a nice layer of seasoning. The wings were okay. We've had better elsewhere. The Rolling Rooster is definitely my favorite Southern comfort food home that I've been to - very flavorful, good portioned food with down home southern hospitality. Everything I want from a chicken joint. My wife and I split a 3 wing, 3 fish, two side combo (onion rings and okra) and were blown away by the quality of the fry on everything. The fish in particular has a great cornmeal breading that is generously seasoned, crisp and not greasy and goes great with their tartar sauce. The chicken wings are whole wings and have a faint lemon pepper taste in the crust that's good on it's own, with a splash of hot sauce or maple syrup on the side of the table. Onion rings are battered up and crisp - okra also has some sprinkles of cheese dusted on top for more flavor but they're also nuggets of awesomeness. All in all, it's a gem, even if it's far. Two words: chicken waffles. My new favorite joint to get this classic combo in ATX. Each order comes with two waffles (not too sweet) and your choice of number of whole wings (3-6; $10.50 - $16.50). The Rolling Rooster of course includes syrup and some amazing house-made hot sauce. Wings and heat go together like, well wings and heat; however, when eating with waffles I personally prefer to drizzle sweet syrup all over everything and just get messy with it! They also have wings plus side options. That's when I would opt to sauce 'em up. Speaking of sides! The best damn collards I've had west of the Mississippi. Cooked down in traditional southern style, chopped into large pieces, and flavored to perfection with smokey pork, onions, and salt. Don't even need to dash vinegar on these babies. And, for $3 (all sides same price) the serving is large and can easily be shared by two. Next visit, I'm definitely going for a mac attack. The RR offers HH M-F from 5-7 with various drink specials. On Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7- close they have a DJ and domino tables, respectively, and a reverse HH with $3 drinks (anybody up for a "Dirty Rooster?") and $3 apps including fried pickles, Rooster pups, gizzards and such.
