Their hush puppies were the best I've had, moist and flavorful. Their fish was good, but the chicken tenders with the lemon pepper were delicious! I asked why its a dollar higher for each food item from what the menu says; she said the kitchen says its a dollar extra for sauce. There was no where on the menu that said sauce was extra or nor did they say it was extra verbally. So its like I'm paying extra $2 for sauce that wasn't stated. The place wasn't packed at all, which was very surprising to me, hence why I said I could see it growing, but honestly glad it wasn't packed. Didn't take long to get service or the food, but it was really just 2 girls working so if it was packed, they'd be in trouble. But the food was pretty good. I decided to get a sampler plate just to try a variety of things just to see. Everything was good. The waffle was cooked perfectly not too soft and not too hard. The fish was pretty good and the shrimp were fried harder than I would've like but they where good. The wings were good as well, however, I wish they were seasoned a bit more. I didn't have it, but my friend said the macaroni and cheese was really really good, had bacon in it and all. The vibe could be better, I don't know how it is other days but if they advertised, brought in a DJ along with the food and drinks I can see it being a hot spot, but it's ducked off in a corner in a aged empty shopping center, so maybe not too many people know about it. So I live not far from this restaurant in a huge parking lot that is largely empty outside of basically the fast food places and then this Gem tucked away in a corner. I walk in with my girlfriend, we are greeted immediately with a smile by Shaunte, who quickly seated us and provided menus. With a few tables on her hands, it only took a few minutes for her to get back to us to take our orders. Again, with a smile. She graciously took my order and I took her recommendation for the Dizzy Rooster for sipping pleasure. Me and my friend got the same thing. Well - almost. She got the 3 tenders/2 waffles I got the 3 wings/2 waffles. We both got the same drink. The Waffles were nice and flaky on the outside... but warm and soft on the inside. I am honestly not a big waffle fan.... but I was totally BLOWN AWAY. Combined with the crispy flavorful chicken wings. Yes. This was a win. Hadn't had a good meal in a couple of weeks so I figured the only cure for that was some delish soul food...and the Rolling Rooster did not disappoint! I brought the family and the first thing I noticed was the Kool-Aid machine. Instant star there. We ended up ordering the family meal with the fried catfish, fried wings (each piece is a big leg/wing), and sides of Mac and cheese, collard greens, hush puppies, and fries. The fried catfish was excellent. It didn't taste like mud, the batter was light and the inside was juicy. Each piece was big too so one was already filling. The wings were also excellent. The batter was light and had a nice crisp, and the right amount of seasoning. The Mac and cheese was probably the best side -- creamy, cheesy, and had a little kick to it. The kids loved the fries and the hush puppies had good seasoning. The only side I would pass on next time would be the collard greens which tasted canned. Overall, great experience and the service was friendly. I'm glad we went there in person; I'm big on getting food delivered, but for this kind of food, it's best to eat it in the restaurant. I had the sampler plate #2, with fried chicken, fried catfish, fried shrimp, collard greens, baked Mac and cheese, and corn bread " DELICIOUS!" Everything was delicious, hot, freshly cooked and tasted soooo good . The service was excellent as well, I believe the waitress name was Jade or Jane (my apologies for not getting it right) BUT she was very attentive to our needs and was knowledgeable about the menu. The sweet tea was "SWEEEEET!" All I wanted today was some good ole fashioned southern comfort food and that is exactly what I received Only reason I didn't give this restaurant 5 stars is because they really need to upgrade their dinning area. Things I tried, and my ratings: Chicken and catfish combo (2 sides) -Onion rings 3/5 - probably a little soggy due to transport. -Mac and cheese 4/5 - very tasty, not to soggy and not to dry. - Catfish 3/5 - cooked very well and had a good crunch but definitely needed more seasoning. -Chicken 2/5 - I love fried chicken, but these wings were so bland that it was like I was eating straight cornmeal. Just like the catfish though, good crunch and good cook on them. My add-ons were the best part: -Shrimp 5/5 - I should have gone with catfish and shrimp instead of chicken. Seated fast for dine in, quick order and drinks. Old school and R&B music makes for casual dining. Ordered jalapeño poppers, they tasted cold inside and the jalapeños were tough. Tried to bite into it and couldn't. When I ate the whole jalapeño a bunch of hot water came out indicating that possibly they were made in advance, frozen then deep fried. I'd have waited for ones that weren't pre-prepped the taste was there. Not impressed with that but when our meals arrived, wow! Food was a hit! Hit, delicious and I'd have given a 5 star review except for the appetizer bombs. Okra, onion rings, tenders and catfish best I've had since coming to Austin. So I just tried this place for the first time via DoorDash. I was specifically craving collard greens and rice and gravy. I did a search and this place popped up. I'm so glad it did, this captured my taste expectations especially being in Austin. I ordered 4 wings with a side of greens and an extra side of rice and gravy. The food was delicious I appreciate that they cooked with turkey bits. The gravy was flavorful, I caught myself licking my bowl (since I was home). The wings were seasoned well and fried the way I like. The quality of meat was there. I even was able to order a margarita during their hh special and it was so good with the right amount of flavor and liquor. Would definitely get the shrimp and fish again, love the seasoning on the batter. It's located at the corner of Wells Branch pkwy and Mopac in a kinda unpopulated shopping center with a McDonald's. Visited for the first time today, had some friends in town and they wanted to check out Rolling Rooster. Very cozy, homey place. Service was friendly and attentive, albeit a little slow. However, we were able to overlook that last aspect as our group was focusing on catching up and watching the Texans/Cowboys game, which they gladly put on the big screens for us to watch. Mimosas were tasty, our group had a few combo plates, mostly chicken/fish and various sides. I was the lone person who ordered the chicken and waffles. It's a classic combo for a reason y'all! That was my main reason for visiting...lol it did not disappoint. 3 full wings, a waffle and cheese grits. You can tell that the chicken and fish is fried to order. Everything came to our table piping hot and golden crisp. This is not fast food by any stretch. However, it was freshly made and delicious. Our waitress checked on us throughout and even brought my friend a piece of cake when she overheard us mention her birthday. So very sweet of her! Only downside? I was not a fan of having to fight cutting my waffle with flimsy disposable plasticware. It really took away from the eating experience. Oh em gee, if you are ever in North Austin and get cravings for some delicious fried chicken, look no further than The Rolling Rooster. My colleague showed me this spot a few years ago and I have been a huge fan ever since. I have yet to find an instance where the chicken skin isn't crispy; and the inside nice and moist. I don't know what kind of seasoning they use, but it has a delicious flavor on every bite. For a great price , you can order a combo meal that includes 1 or 2 sides. I would highly recommend the Mac n cheese, rice and gravy, and waffle fries. I mean where can you even find a waffle fry option anymore!?! I'll give you one hint: Rolling Rooster! The one minor setback is service and timing. It's definitely not the server's fault, but they have always appeared to be slightly understaffed with how popular this place can get for a late lunch.
