If you're looking for an unbelievable drink EXPERIENCE in DT/MT Sac this is the spot for you! This speakeasy is located within the restaurant 'Bawk.' One needs to get on a waiting list (which is completely worth it) and when called, go through a hidden door to a bar that nobody would suspect is within the restaurant! It gives off fun, '1920s prohibition' vibes! I went with my fiancee and best friend. We were FLOORED by how nice a setup this speakeasy is. The ambiance/ environment is so elegant and personalized. The servers are fantastic too, answering our myriad of questions and giving cocktail recommendations. There are large booths in the back of the speakeasy, but we were sat at the community table in the middle. For my drink, I got the 'Sleight of Hand,' a spicy tequila cocktail that was absolutely phenomenal. The presentation of this drink was the best I've seen for a cocktail in forever. I felt like a VIP! The attention to detail with each ingredient was superb. I've never "babied" a drink like this before, simply because I wanted to enjoy every last sip of it! I was sad when I was finished with it. We also got a side of kaarage to snack on and it was delicious (something about nice drinks makes me hungry lol). I'm assuming this came from Bawk's kitchen? Cute little speakeasy! It was easy to come for a walk-in as we came on Sunday, but I've heard a reservation are recommended. Bartenders were friendly, gave good recommendations and let us be. We got the matcha and passion fruit based drinks. Both are delicious! This is definitely a place to check out for a special occasion as the drinks are on the higher side and with inflation... need I say more? $18 for a cocktail is a splurge to treat yourself. The quality and balance of the drinks were great. We ordered the papas bravos and all I can't say is GET THEM. So simple, so good and the portion is solid for an appetizer. Came here to have some drinks with a friend. It's a secret bar located inside of another location/restaurant. All in all the vibes inside were really cool! It only fit like 45 people and was very intimate. The drinks were delicious and the bartenders were quick to give their recommendations or make something personal. Had their patatas bravas. Such a cool Speakeasy! We came on a double date night last Friday and had a great time. You enter through BAWK! and let the hostess know you are there for The Roost. They let The Roost know that you are ready and then proceed to take you into their supply closet. They tell you to knock 3 times and then another door opens - it was all very Harry Potter meets The Skulls. The Roost is very dimly light, but also romantic and secretive. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. What I loved about this Speakeasy, was that there were alcohol flights - or as they call them, "experiences." I experienced Tequila. The food was also really good - we ordered the Onion Dip, Karaage Chicken and Oysters to share. I could have eaten 3 plates of the chicken. I highly recommend making a reservation - it is $30 per person, but it goes towards your bill and each reservation is 2 hours which is plenty of time. I will definitely be back! read more

An absolutely beautiful speakeasy in the middle of downtown! We came in at 5 PM without a reservation, and we were able to be seated after a short wait. The room to get in is very unsuspecting, and when we got in, we were quite surprised when the door swung open to reveal a beautiful room. The huge wall of spirits was beautiful. I got a drink that was nice and had foam! My friend got a nonalcoholic drink that looked nice as well. The French Onion dip was delicious, but I wish I had more chips for it! I love the fried onions and roe on top. The karage was fried to perfection, and I liked how it sat on top of the dipping sauce. The bartender was great, he had a really interesting accent. Wow. Second time here and we were happy we came. It was a Sunday evening which was perfect. There is a new drink menu that includes more food items. The Roost is a small speakeasy bar above Bawk. It's a fun experience to go, it feels secretive. The bar maintains the speakeasy feel inside. It's darkish and intimate. My friend did not enjoy her drink, it was not at all what she (or anyone expected) from a pretty standard cocktail order and when she mentioned it to him he shrugged and said, "well some people enjoy it." He didn't offer another drink instead or to make it the more traditional way. He made a few other dismissive comments as well. Even so, they have a hefty menu of interesting cocktails and mocktails. They have very yummy food as well. The beet salad was fresh and the flavors all stood out. The chicken karage was also a favorite at our table. They had all the classics as well as some very interesting and unique cocktails. This is a nice little speakeasy bar located in Downtown Sac. There's parking nearby (paid) and free street parking as well. There's also another lot close but not too sure if it's free. The ambiance in here is nice, cozy, dim. With a beautiful back-lit liquor shelf at the bar. The bartender and waiters were attentive and had some nice recommendations. The menu had a lot of options (Rum, Gin, Tequila, Vodka, Whiskey) To start, they offer a small mixer for each person. - a citrusy carbonated juice. I ended up going with the Tequila experience which provides 3 tequila cocktails/shot of the Bartender's choice. The first drink picture was basically a Paloma, very good and light. The second drink was more of a "whiskey/cognac" type of sipper. The third was just a spicy citrus shot, was smooth but I am never a fan of shots itself. You are able to order a full sized cocktail from the experience if you like it. I didn't remember to take pictures of the bar bites but we ordered the Deviled Eggs and Hummus & bread. It's a super cool speakeasy that makes me giddy every time I walk through the door. Once inside the ambience is cozy with dim lighting and intimate booths - nothing you'd expect when you first walk in to the hostess station. They have a gorgeous floor to ceiling bar that showcases bottles of some of the finest spirits. Once seated, you are greeted by the most attentive server who seems to genuinely enjoy her job. I can't say enough how much fun we had on New Years Eve. My husband's birthday is on New Year's Day and he wanted to go somewhere a little different on New Year's Eve so he chose this establishment. We are still talking about how much we enjoyed ourselves. It's a good idea to make a reservation as they do fill up fast. There is no parking lot so you're left up to parking on the street. We found parking fairly easy across the street. I don't want to spoil it by talking about the way we get to the bar but I have to say....pretty cool! As we sat down and went through the menu of many cocktails it was hard to choose due to the fact that everything sounded good. Immediately we were served a welcome cocktail (which was delicious) But I had a dirty martini and my husband had a Hennessy side car. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I did a little research and saw that the Roost had a couple of reservations left for the evening. I also did a little bit of research to see where I needed to go (note: check in at BAWK). The wife and I enjoy craft cocktails - probably a bit too much, as we were regulars at The HI BRAU Room in Honolulu when we still lived there. So I made a reservation at the bar because I like the show. I'm a former cook/chef, so I appreciate the hell out of the craftsmanship that goes into a cocktail. I know what flavors work for food, and a proper mixologist does the same with drinks. This place did not disappoint! The menu is pretty extensive for a craft cocktail bar, even dividing by eras, which was awesome. My wife started with a Champagne cocktail and I started with an Old Fashioned. Excellent on both counts. The bartender in front of us told us that he was the new guy, but he was super professional and knew his stuff! We kept going with a couple more drinks for me and one more for her. I genuinely enjoyed our time. I loved the twist to get into the place. I REALLY enjoyed that you can test the mixologist with a dealers choice based on your taste profiles also. I've been seeing some 1-star reviews, and I just can't possibly imagine those are genuine. The Roost is a very well hidden speakeasy; it took us a few minutes to figure out where it was. First, you check in at Urban Roots's front counter. Then they will direct you to a utility closet to knock on a door. THEN another door will open and finally, you will be entering the Roost. It was nice and cozy inside, with some accent brick walls and a feature wall full of liquors which was quite impressive to look at. The bartenders were busy making drinks, but yet were very attentive to our orders. Since we sat at the bar, we were had the opportunity to chat with one of the mixologists, Donnie, and it was really fun watching him making variety of cocktails. We ordered 5 different drinks during our visit and were happy with all of them. Out of the Rum old-fashioned, Amaretto sour, Matcha mama, MSG sound system, and Hot Toddy, my personal favorites were the Amaretto sour and the Hot Toddy. Donnie made the Amaretto sour so smooth and well-balanced with Rye Whiskey. Most importantly, it was not overly sweet which made it much more enjoyable. He also made a fancy Hot Toddy for me (because I was cold) by mixing sake and ginger into it. The result was the most sophisticated Hot Toddy I have ever imagined. My fiancé really liked the Rum old-fashioned because it was the perfect balance between the bitters and the sipping rum that Donnie recommended. It was a drink that was smooth and easy to drink with the perfectly crystal-clear ice cube sitting in the glass.
