Came for Happy Hour and stayed for dinner! I went to Hook & Ladder on a weekday after seeing that they have happy hour that extends past 5pm. I made a reservation for 5:45pm and enjoyed their happy hour specials before it ended at 6pm. Pro tip: Happy Hour runs from 3-6pm on weekday nights, including Friday! From the happy hour menu, we ordered the tots and hamachi crudo. Interestingly, there was no price difference between the standard and happy hour menus for the crudo. Tots came in a half order for half off, which was a great deal! Overall, our apps were delicious. The hamachi crudo is a must - truly a symphony of flavors and textures. I loved the fresh slices of blood orange, which brightened up the dish. The tots were also a hit at our table! For my entree, I ordered the Pig and the Goat pizza. This presented more like a flatbread due to the lack of sauce, but I loved the light airy crust and again, contrast of flavors and textures. The marinated apricots were a yummy addition! My partner ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich, and his only remark was that it was drenched in sauce, which made it difficult to enjoy. We ended our night with a basque cheesecake, which was so good! The owner checked in and made sure everything went well. Hook & Ladder is a fun, neighborhood spot that pays homage to the Industrial Revolution. Inside is very industrial and chic, and there's even patio seating available. Hook & Ladder has a cool concept and a seasonal menu, which makes me curious to see what they'll do next. I love this place! We came in tonight for our anniversary and the manager Savannah went above and beyond to make it special for us. She was truly a hard worker, I observed as she went around to other tables to check in, stepped in where needed, was friendly to the staff and patrons, then went into training mode for a new waitress. She is amazing. She gave us champagne and a cute candle at our table when she found out what we were celebrating. Food is always on point here, which is why we come back time and time again. Tonight was no different. Small plates: Hamachi crudo is a must, it was so delicious, the steak tartar was also perfection, but the star of the show was the crab & shrimp Louie salad. OMG. I will never be able to eat a normal salad again! It was the best salad I've ever had. The avocado mousse and 6 minute egg, was just so amazing. The crab to shrimp ratio was absolutely perfect, and perfectly cooked. You just have to try it. Entrees: smash burger 10/10. We always go with their burgers, and tonight was no different. The bacon onion jam takes the burger to the next level. The mushroom stroganoff 10/10. This was also delicious. The shitake cream made the dish. Pork porterhouse 7/10. Lacked flavor. Cherry jam was ok. Collard greens ok. I think everything else on the table blew me away, so my expectations for this dish were high and it didn't meet the mark. I normally do the half roasted chicken, it's amazing. Creme brûlée: 8/10 flavor was amazing as usual, I always get this here, however tonight, the sugar was burnt ontop and made it very bitter. Ambiance: 10/10. Clean establishment. Cute decor. Amazing place for date night, anniversaries, drinks/dinner with friends. For reference, this is the 4th yelp review I've ever written. First time at H & L and was taking my wife and her friends out for a birthday brunch. They got mimosas which were good and thats about all we enjoyed. One of our friends is vegan and she mentioned she's eaten there several times so figured the menu would accommodate. We ordered tator tots which were ok then I ordered a burger, my wife got the corn beef hash and my vegan friend ordered the impossible burger. The server seemed busy but the restaurant didn't have a ton of tables at the time but she looked like she was the only one working inside and on the patio. They never asked what my preference was on the burger temp but I assumed medium which is fine and I ended up getting medium well with bits of burnt, but don't worry, they drench their burger in some kind of sauce. My wife's corn hash was just super greasy and my vegan friend got the impossible burger with actual cheese. Luckily, she caught that the cheese was real and since the server wasn't around, we told the busser who brought us the food that she'll just get the salad. He took the burger back and brought back what I would call a side of a side salad. This dish was about the size of what you give your cat wet food in. A little embarrassing considering she wanted a burger and now has a bed of lettuce. They apologized and brought her a full-size salad, but they did put sliced avocado on the side because they felt bad. Obviously, putting something that is not vegan on a vegan plate can make the person incredibly sick and has in the past unfortunately. For four of us to get subpar food and basic service was $150 which I paid and tipped 20% because I have seven years in the service industry and wouldn't do that to a server. Overall, I was just embarrassed by the way everything was handled. My vegan friend also ordered a cold brew, and the server didn't even think to not put the cream that we didn't know that came on the top. I don't think she's ever met anyone who was vegan before. In summary, my first time there with friends celebrating a birthday bruch. Server was good but didn't come to the table very often. Server didn't know what vegan meant apparently. Food was very ok, overcooked and greasy and the bill was $150. The best thing about our experience were the mimosas. read more

We visited Hook & Ladder around 1:00 in the afternoon on a weekday and I chose them specifically because I saw they had a dog friendly patio. There was no one on the patio when we arrived, so I walked inside to ask about being seated there while my husband waited outside with our pup. There was no one at the hostess stand so after a few minutes I made eye contact with an employee behind the bar. I walked through the dining room and there were two or maybe three tables of people dining inside. I explained I wanted to eat outside because I had my dog with me and she told me she would try and find someone to come out and take my order. It seemed clear that they were very short-staffed so I told her I was happy to tell her my order now if that made it easier on them. She proceeded to ask the bartender to come and take my order and the first thing out of my mouth was the French dip. He explained they were out of that so I told him I would need some menus after all and headed outside. The woman had given me both the happy hour menu and the regular menu and I noticed that there was a slight difference in prices. We proceeded to enjoy the music and decide what we wanted to eat and then the original woman that I spoke with came out to take our order. My husband got the smashburger with tots and popcorn chicken and I was feeling like a pizza so I decided to try the pig and goat. I love pear and goat cheese. It was nice weather and they play great music on the patio so we enjoyed chatting and people watching until our food came out. The presentation was lovely. My husband really enjoyed his smashburger and I enjoyed my pizza. The pizza was simple but the flavors worked very well together, even though typically arugula is not my favorite, I would definitely recommend the pig and the goat. We did not really care for the popcorn chicken. Although the size was fine, it had a zesty sauce that was too bitter for us and made the wings more soggy than crispy, but the tots were by far both of our favorite. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Been eyeing this place on the Resy app to try since it's a restaurant option on the app to use my Amex Resy credit. My husband and I came here on a Saturday and got really lucky with finding street parking nearby. We came for a little late lunch and were immediately seated. The restaurant had a good amount of seating for dining inside, outside, or at the bar. The menu had a good amount of options and since we were there a little after lunch time, we were given their hybrid menu of lunch and brunch dishes. My husband and I ended up ordering the Kale Caesar with Chicken and Fried Chicken Sandwich to share. We asked our server if the chicken sandwich can be cut in half and she gladly said yes. My husband also ordered a mimosa for his drink and I got a lemonade. When the food came out, we were so glad we ordered what we did and decided to split it because the portion size was huge! We each ate half of the Fried Chicken Sandwich and then split the Kale Caesar. The Fried Chicken Sandwich also came with fries as well. I really liked how the Kale Caesar dressing was more tossed into the salad rather than it being drizzled all over. My favorite dish would have to be the Fried Chicken Sandwich with how crispy the chicken was and the kimchi that was with it really made all the flavors come together really well. The fries that also came with the Fried Chicken Sandwich was also plenty for the both of us and was really well seasoned that we couldn't stop eating it! The only thing that I will say is my lemonade had way too much ice in it but I didn't care so much because it was so refreshing and my server made it fresh and sweet just how I like it! Hook and ladder is a great spot for Sunday brunch. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Usually have been seated pretty fast the last couple of times I've visited. The ambiance is very calm and not overwhelming in any way, great for a quiet brunch. My go to order: breakfast burrito with avocado and French toast. $17 for a burrito is a bit much in my opinion for a breakfast burrito, but it's filling and usually end up taking one half home to finish. Now for the French toast. One of the BEST I've ever had! Doesn't look like your average French toast. The crumble on top reminds me of a coffee cake. The French toast is soft and sweet, but not over powering in either texture or sweetness. Definitely recommend everyone gives it a try. They had a seasonal coffee on their menu today. Pretty solid. If you don't like the taste of ginger, then it isn't for you. The servers and bartenders are very nice as well! read more

For Valentine's Day, we decided to treat ourselves to H&L's dinner for 2 special V-Day menu with cocktail/wine pairings. I had not been to dinner to this place since the days of Hanger 17, and had only tried their brunch in their current iteration. I was happy to see there was a good crowd dining, and even with a reservation for 8 PM, we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The ambiance and decor could be described as eclectic steam-punk chic- very midtown apropos. The service was 5-star! The 3-course menu started with 6 west coast oysters topped with Tsar Nicolas caviar paired with a Grey Goose martini. We love oysters and were excited to try these out. Sadly they were served on a bed of rock salt. The oysters were on the warm side, lacked a vinegary or lemony touch, and some of the rock salt spread into the shells which was unpleasant to feel & taste as we were trying to enjoy them. The martini was also warm. The main entree was a 16oz striploin au poivre served with a table-side of crisp potatoes with salsa matcha and cotija. The steak was cooked to medium-rare, and was absolutely amazing. The bark on the steak was crispy, meat-candy perfection, and the au poivre sauce was a perfect complement to this succulently prepared striploin. And the potatoes- OMG! These were crack. We could not stop eating them. They were cooked, browned, seasoned to perfection. Seasoned just right- and the white salsa macha and cotija were just perfectly there complementing and cutting through the richness of the beef, pepper, and richness of the entire meal; it really brought everything together. The pairing for the entree was a Paso Robles Grenache red-blend which went perfectly well with our meal. And the grand finale was a trio of red velvet whoppie pies filled with mascarpone icing paired with a bourbon & crème de cacao sweet drink which was a little sweet for my taste, but the whoopies were just perfection. They were moist, airy, and the mascarpone was not overly sweet with just a kiss of powder sugar. The only thing that would have made it more special on V-day was if the whoopies had been heard-shaped. All in all this was a great experience, a great deal, and a re-freshing experience for a neighborhood staple that doesn't get a lot of love (pun intended). Some fine-tuning could definitely make this place a solid 5-star. Definitely recommend and will check them out again. read more

Tots came out savory and crispy with a side of aioli. Kumquat and arugula salad was enjoyable, the sweetness complimented the bite of the arugula with slight saltiness from the cheese. Chicken mole had good smokey flavor with a light amount of heat. The chicken breast wasn't juicy, but not too dry either, skin had good crisp. The butternut squash crème brûlée was not overly sweet and texturally interesting with the candied squash, but a bit strong with vanilla extract. My wife opted for the Asian inspired dine downtown options. The curry soup was delicious, with a bit of heat. The tonkatsu with thai salad and crispy rice cake did not complement each other well. We got served water while looking at the menu. We ordered pork belly hash, breakfast burrito, and the kid menu lil scramble. The food was flavorful and delicious. The country fried pork was ok, however the sauce, potatoes and over easy eggs were great. The sauce was flavorful just enough favor. Potatoes weren't salt and it balanced with the sauce. This place is A Okay! I do enjoy the ambiance of the outdoor and indoor area of Hook & Ladder. The items on their food and drink menu are good. I do feel like when you go to Hook & Ladder, you must pack your patience as the customer service runs a little slower than other restaurants. They do have good food, I am just not sure if it is worth the price. Parking is easy enough. You do have to pay for street parking there now though so please keep that in mind. I finally got my Weenie Whistle featured in The Santa Clause movie that made Neal believe in Santa! And seeing the Wienermobile I've been wanting to see since I was a child, in person was just surreal! I ordered both the Sacramento Street Dog and Western Bacon Dogs to share with my hubby and toddler! As soon as I bit down into my savory dog, my tastebuds were welcomed with mouthwatering bacon and a nice juicy hot dog! The outdoor patio in front offers a nice breezy green tree laden view. The back patio offers some privacy and a little quieter ambiance. This place is good for happy hour with a coworker, date night, or special occasion dinner. They recently added lunch take away options that are very affordable. The bartenders are so creative and the cocktail menu is just as interesting as the food selections. Their fried chicken sandwich is a staple worth ordering. Always something new and interesting. The serves are very attentive and deal with any issues with grace and efficiency. They were late delivering our appetizer last time so they just removed it from the bill. Try something new and at hook and ladder, there's always something new. Parking is street only. There's one stretch of free parking on S st, the rest is paid by the hour. TL;DR: great DD option for 2026, and get tots for the table. We walked in to a fairly empty restaurant at 6pm on a Wednesday for Dine Downtown and were seated halfway in the private room (curtains pulled back for the night) and halfway in the main dining room. It was dark under the archway where the curtains can be drawn, and the space next to our table was a busy walkway between the hostess stand and the dining room. Awkward choice, but it didn't start to get busy until 7pm so we didn't notice til later. Service was also a little off with timing, but all the staff were friendly and welcoming. It took about 15 minutes after arriving to put in drink orders and request the Dine Downtown menu (though we bothered the hostess twice because she was covering multiple roles and wasn't able to bring by menus until after drinks and appetizer tots arrived). But for the main show, we were here for a limited time menu. I'm always a little hesitant when the prix fixe menu has little (or this case no) alignment with the regular menu, but we trusted chef Miguel Rivera and ordered one of everything. The arugula salad was fine with the kumquat, but definitely do the curry soup - creamy, flavorful, on the salty side, but perfect for the weather. The pistachio mole was delightful and light, and I was surprised how well the persimmon paired with the chicken. But you should do the tonkatsu - we opted for the cauliflower version, but the Thai salad that's on both the pork and vegan version is a masterpiece. A slice of crispy rice topped with salad and a floret was *chef's kiss* the best bite I had all night. For dessert, the butternut squash cream brûlée had a neutral candied squash on top, but the brûlée was so-so: we had burnt, bitter pieces that we fished out before enjoying the rest of the crème. The basque cheesecake was our table's preference - chunky crust, custardy cheesecake, and moooore persimmons atop! The whole DD menu felt seasonal, with good surprises, and I'm glad we had the chance to try it out. We also started our meal with the tots and avocado ranch because we walked in hungry - I am so happy they live in the regular menu, because they were a delight and I don't think I can go back to anyone else's tots. Lastly, I had the Mucho Merry Manzana cocktail, and it felt like an apple pisco sour - if you had a sip from the caramel and cinnamon sugar rim side, you'd give your taste buds a lil harvest caramel apple. On Thursday, August 28th 2025, Hook & Ladder Manufacturing located on 1630 S St in Sacramento, CA, hosted a pop-up of the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile with Yelp Sacramento. Hook & Ladder also made special hot dogs for the occasion and since I came with my beautiful Yelp Elite wife and adorable toddler, we purchased additional hot dogs for ourselves. For this special occasion, Hook & Ladder offered Sacramento Street Dog (Original Oscar Mayer Hot Dog with applewood smoked bacon) and Western Bacon Dog (Original Oscar Mayer Hot Dog with bacon jam and crispy onions). We each got one of each and shared some with our toddler. The Sacramento Street Dog was amazing because it was wrapped in bacon and and topped with onions and bell peppers. It was good! The Western Bacon dog was savory as well as delicious. My toddler went crazy for the bacon jam because it was so good! The staff and waitress were were nice, courteous, and sincere. Inside the restaurant, the ambiance was casual but dim enough to be a place for a romantic evening and the back patio (where we sat as requested) was nice: bright enough for pictures and cozy for our little family. We got to try hook and ladder for the first time while experiencing the Oscar Meyer wienermobile event. It's a pretty cool establishment in the middle of Sac that we hadn't been to before. We had some of their specialty dogs and our server Chase said that as our first time there we had to try their tater tots. They were 10/10 amazing tots, super light and crispy with a pillowy potato center. The hot dogs were good too, especially the Western Bacon Dog, but I don't expect it to stick around (although would be a cool gameday snack if going to see the Rivercats/A's). One more additional not- our server was explaining some of the other menu options and how everything is made in house. Super impressive because that takes a ton of work. I didn't have a great experience at the time, but I wanted to grab dinner after checking out the new Day Tripper bar down the street so I made a reservation. Booked the back patio which was a cool vibe on rustic wood spool tables with lush plants all around. We ordered a round of beers, tater tots, Caesar salad and a pig and the goat pizza. Tots were excellent, crispy exterior, fluffy center. Done square and perfectly salted with an avocado ranch. Highly recommend. Kale ceasar was great, good balance, nicely dressed. The salsa matcha atop them was insanely delicious! Do not miss the carrots! I appreciate their interesting non alcoholic drinks. The seasonal shrub is very reasonably priced and flavorful. I really enjoyed the crispy chili pepper rockfish. It was a pretty dense crispy coating, so perhaps a steak knife to felt cut through it? I finally got to check Hook and Ladder and am so glad I did. It was a busy evening due to the Wienermobile being outside but I was able to sit at the bar and order an after drink glass of wine while chatting with my neighbors and checking out what everyone was ordering. The staff was amazing! They handled the large crowd with ease and coolness under fire. No sweat- they had trained for this movement/ were used to being so busy and still professional. I food was good and I would love to go back and try something off their happy hour menu. They have an amazing outside area and their decor was very cool, hard wood, interesting lights, and signs. I would give this place negative stars if I could. I placed an order through Grubhub at 7:42 p.m. At 8:17 p.m., I received a notification that the order had been canceled and refunded. The cancellation details in the app stated the restaurant was closed; the "reason" stated in email was "Unfortunately, we're unable to fulfill this order". This timing is confusing, because it makes it seem like the restaurant didn't even notice the order until 35 minutes after it was placed. When I checked the restaurant's website, it stated they are open until 10 p.m. I then called to clarify what had happened with our order. The phone system stated they are open until 9 p.m., which is inconsistent with the website. Even if 9 p.m. is the correct closing time, canceling an order at 8:17 p.m.--well before closing--makes no sense. There would still have been plenty of time to prepare the order, especially since it was a small, simpler one. When I tried calling the system placed me on hold for several minutes, and then instead of reaching a staff member, it said the staff was busy and the voicemail box is not monitored. One other concern is that both the phone system and the website only reference DoorDash for delivery orders. Given that I placed my order through Grubhub and it was canceled, it raises the question of whether or not they are actually accepting orders through Grubhub. It also took us a while to go through the menu and decide what to order since this was our first time. By the time the order was canceled, it was too late to order from somewhere else because we were already hungry. It's frustrating to think how much worse this could have been if it had been for a special occasion. Overall, this was a confusing and disappointing experience with poor communication and no way to get clarification. This was our first time trying to patronize this restaurant. Because of this experience, we will never attempt to do so again. That's especially disappointing because we were looking forward to trying them out and it's unfortunate for them because when we like a restaurant are very loyal customers. read more

Second course was choice of either kabocha squash soup, tempura cauliflower, or prosciutto cheese/olives/sourdough plate. Third course was choice of salmon, cavetelli, or pork loin. Optional wine pairing was additional cost. In the past the three courses included a dessert, which I did miss. We also shared an order of the grilled Nantes carrots small plate to start. The arancini was great, too bad you only got one each. For second course I got the kabocha squash soup which was very good! My main was the pan roasted salmon, which came with beluga lentils, root vegetables and mustard greens. The skin and salmon were pretty salty, but I managed. The veggie accompaniments were much better, saved the dish. The prosciutto was just okay, the pasta was great, the pork loin a letdown according to the rest of my party. We had reservations but were seated in the back patio. The heaters were either too hot or ineffective against the January cold. The server was good/present up until the third course. They mistakenly brought a tempura cauliflower when prosciutto was ordered. One salmon dish was sent back for being too salty, and replaced with pork loin, but no good. As for the wine pairing, there should have been a choice but my party had to ask. The main dishes took forever to come out, the server disappeared, and overall didn't feel happy/satisfied with my $45+ spent for such an experience. Loved our visit today! We enjoyed the brunch menu and the March Mai Tai Madness which was a blast! Within our party of 7, we sampled 7 of the 8 Mai Tai contenders. Our two favorites included the Mai Triple Double and the Mai Moment of Clarity. It's a shame these two were pitted against each other in Round 1.... they were both fantastic! Food was delightful, as well. I loved my salmon Benedict. Hubby loved his chicken sandwich. Daughter loved her kids burger. All around, everyone enjoyed their food, drinks, and the atmosphere. Caviar & 3 egg soft scramble was a lot and so delish. Burgers great. Had the velvet hive coffee, iced. It was recommended. Great suggestion. Next I'm going to try the velvet hive espresso martini. Everyone loved their food. Great service. Must try! read more

Hook & Ladder was very beautiful, me and some other yelpers went and sat outside to eat our amazing Oscar Mayer weinermobile hot dog and chill! My only complaint is they wouldn't let us take them to go...very interesting for a restaurant but whatever!! read more

I didn't have the best experience coming in the first time, but coming in our second time was better. This time, we sat inside, which was right behind the host desk and was much more private. It was nice to have what felt like our own private table. My son loved his pizza, and to be honest, it is incredible. We tried some new dishes and the quality was great. Came for the Wienermobile and stayed for the Happy Hour! I read about the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile making a stop at H&L and rushed over! It was everything I had hoped and more! In addition, to finally seeing the Wienermobile, I had gotten the chance to check out H&L, which had been on my list since moving to the Sac area last year. The interior was beautifully done and I appreciated the amount of natural light and soft, amber lighting. Out of the items I tried off the HH menu, I was really struck by the Chicken Liver Mousse and Pork Riblets. The mousse had a soft, meaty umami while being rich and smooth! The riblets had great flavor and were so darn tender. Definitely makes me want to come back for their dinner menu with the wife sometime! read more

Came here for my husband's birthday dinner. The host was polite & sat us right away. The waitress was very polite as well, took our drink orders, and gave us more time with the menu at our request. It felt a little over 10 minutes before she came back which wasn't bad, but felt a little longer than normal. We got our tots, my mojito, and waited for the rest of our food & drinks. The tots and the drink were tasty, and that was about as good as it got for us. We ordered the brick chicken, burger, and chicken sandwich. The arugula & potatoes were so salty it was almost inedible. The chicken was nothing special. The sesame buns used for the burgers tasted like wonder bread. Our water glasses were empty for the majority of the meal & my friend didn't get his coke until he was almost done with his food. We had been here twice previously, and it was good. I was walking through Sacramento wearing my Colorado Rockies shirt when owner Jon Modrow, called me over to talk about the Rockies and our shared Colorado backgrounds outside his newest bar Townies. Jon provided me and my friends with some drunk tokens to Hook & Ladder, which we used following the As game before we flew home to Seattle! The H&L staff were amazing and the food and drinks were off the charts. We shared the Tots, Crudo, Crispy Chicken Sandwich and Spicy Grandma's pizza. All were unique and delicious. The drinks were amazing the the staff shared the history around the local ingredients and how the prepared everything in-house. We spent over 3 hours eating drinking and playing cards on the outdoor patio and being taken care of by all the amazing staff. Knew about this place for years. No one ever seemed to mention it. So we never came, until we were looking for a new place to use our Yiftee 916 gift cards. Then came for brunch and were very pleasantly surprised at the freshness, quality, and flavor of the food. And the ambiance is just my wife's style. So we then came back for dinner and were again delighted by the freshness and flavor of the food. Everything was delicious with a definite farm-to-fork quality and flavor profile. The portions are surprisingly generous, not huge, but definitely more than most places of similar quality at similar prices. We ordered too much, and yet, we nearly ate every last bite. And the service was friendly and welcoming on both occasions. Definitely one of our new favorites to add to our fairly short list of places we plan on returning to regularly. read more

Sat at the bar for happy hour. We had the tots and grandmas meatballs. It was very yummy. Service was great behind the bar. She recommended a signature drink they just came up with and it was delicious. I forgot what it was called but it had some foam at the top. I love ambiance here. It's a small spot but very homey feel to it. A little fancy but also chill. I would definitely suggest to try this place. read more
