Had a friend visiting so I decided we should go try a seafood place while he was here. We didn't have reservations and it was a Friday night but we were able to get a table outside without a wait. The heaters outside were nice and kept us warm. It was dog friendly outside. We were able to order quickly. While waiting for our food, we did hear an employee walking by and loudly mumbling about how annoying another table was. I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich and fries (I don't eat seafood). The sandwich was ok, I really didn't like the slice of American cheese that was on it, it made the sandwich worse and kind of didn't go with the sandwich at all (I wish they had chosen another higher quality cheese). A great location (right across the street from Nats Stadium, and on the waterfront) the restaurant is doing a good job of CDC compliance-socially distanced tables, waiters w/masks/gloves, sanitizer, etc. A Wednesday night visit saw the place fill up at dinner time, so reservations are strongly recommended. Of course this is a seafood shop without any doubt. The Scallops, pan seared, atop wonderful black pepper pasta in a delightful basil almond pesto and the Grilled Swordfish positioned on a summer cassoulet were the stars of the night. The Crispy Skin Rockfish, satisfying atop a Carrot Humus with Crispy Okra and roasted eggplant, was tasty, but a bit uninspiring. A side of delicious onion rings were the perfect accompaniment for the fish. A quick note on our server, who was outstanding. Been there since opening an you can tell he really cares about his patrons and the food. And one final note: be sure to ask your server what type of fish is depicted on the top left of the menu. We came here for dinner before a Nats game. Being located right next to the stadium, service was slammed - but you could never tell based on interactions with our waiter. He did a great job of exuding calm to allow us to have an enjoyable meal. We tried to make reservations on OpenTable, but they didn't have any availability during standard meal times. With no reservation, we showed up as a walk-in. While there was a wait for outdoor seating, we lucked out and were able to be seated immediately indoors. Masks are required inside. I ordered the Waterman's Platter (fried fish, oysters, shrimp, and scallops with fries and coleslaw; $32), which is great for sharing. It only comes fried (no broiled option) and there are no substitutions for the sides (I'm not a coleslaw fan). The platter came with all the necessary fixings- lemon, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, and ketchup. This fried, starchy platter will fill you right up. They were most generous with the shrimp and fries, but there was enough sampling of the other proteins to know they were there. We also tried the crispy Brussels sprouts (maple, fish sauce, sriracha, peanuts; $8) and several rounds of raw oysters. I still prefer the Brussels sprouts at Osteria Morini on the other side of the stadium, but these were solid. Ordering the oysters was easy peasy. They had a paper ordering sheet describing the size, location, and brininess of their selection. I found this very helpful because I like it briny! My only gripe is that when ordering different varieties of oysters, the servers didn't always explain which type was which, so it was more like playing a mix-and-match game. The platter came with cocktail sauce, lemons, and their mignonette sauce. I like a classic mignonette, but this one was a little too vinegary for me. But overall, the oysters were cool and refreshing. The meal was on the pricey side (I'm partial to happy hour deals when I can get them), but it's not surprising for the area, ambiance, and seafood selection. Salt line has all the good vibes. I definitely recommend making a reservations especially during pandemic times because this place is always crowded. We were able to get an outdoor table with couch seating. They also have table tops but didn't look like the bar was open for seating. For warmer days the interior is beautiful too and there are plenty of TVs for sports viewers. We got the house frozen drink, the DC crush, which had a surprising amount of alcohol in it and wasn't too sweet. We also got the draft Rose spritzer and a handful of different beers. Really recommend all their drinks. Our server was super chill and helpful with all our food and beverage decisions. For food we got some oysters from the raw bar, pimento cheese crab dip, ceviche, beef tips and the lobster roll. The ceviche was a little weird, served in a long slender shell with not a ton of meat. The crab dip was also a pretty small portion for the price but the lobster roll and beef tips were amazing. Coming back, we'd probably stick to the lobster roll and drinks. After a brief conversation, I decided to take his recommendations lock stock and barrel. Ordered the Branger Muscadet based on his recommendation when I asked for a chardonnay. Very nice, full bodied, great color and fairly, but not overly, dry. Had the Rockfish Tartare as an appetizer. John said it was the best thing on the menu. Had no idea what I was getting into, but it was really good. Tangy and tasty. Had the swordfish as my entrée. Not sure what the basted it with, but darn was it good! Also, it was cooked perfectly. Full disclosure... you are paying for the view at The Salt Line. The food is average at best but the drinks are good and they have quite a nice cocktail menu. Outdoor patio is beautiful and has a great view of the Navy Yard. Servers are friendly and you can easily get a table if you call ahead for a reservation. Main reason for the 3 stars is the quality of the food compared to the prices. The stuffed clams and burger were okay but we also had a fried seafood platter (not pictured) which was super salty and greasy. I didn't personally try the oyster shooter in the photos but the others in my group had positive things to say. If you are in the area, I recommend doing a happy hour here but would suggest planning dinner elsewhere. read more

The food at the salt line is legit if expensive. We started out with the oysters which were very good despite the time of year (usually best in winter). The clam stuffies were different from our typical west coast preparation but were a hit. I had the lobster roll which had delicious and sweet lobster. The size was on the small size. Thank you let me tell you I love the salt line. It is within walking distance to my house. We havd the best baseball team in the US even if they lose! The salt lawn has a beautiful, beautiful and on Thursday, American skyline and waterfront view that you could possibly have in South East, DC. Wait Staff are the best the food is just amazing I can't say enough about Salt Line. I've gone there for my birthday, anniversary with friends. I've taken them there because of its ambience and just, environment is just so good and the food is priced very well. I love The Salt Line! There was enough lobster meat but it was seasoned in a mind blowing way. Fries were a bit soggy - definitely need to be crunchier. Friends enjoyed their Portuguese stew and swordfish though. The burrata was probably the best thing we had and was simple flavors. Unless I ordered the scallops it just wasn't my cup of tea. The flavors were weird the textures didn't really go together I just really didn't like the the dish. Last night my wife and family went here for my birthday. We arrived at the site after making reservations and went outside. After being sad we waited for about 10 minutes for our waiter. Ordered the clam chowder soup and our entrees. The waiter, who is very nice, informed us that they were out of many items. This was very frustrating as you only get notified as you're sitting down despite the fact that they could have posted their main items were out that night. We end up ordering soup a hamburger and The waterman Potter. Our soups came out about 5 minutes later and I was shocked at how watery it was. There's nothing in the description about having a watery clam chowder. I am told this is the main way. Very disappointed as it was significantly more water than anything else. Right after that came out my swordfish and my sons waterman platter. The waterman platter was basically chunks of fried fish, which had no significant taste other than the fried batter. The swordfish was rather bland without any taste and since there's no salt or pepper on the table that had really no flavor. While the food was bland the servers were nice and helpful. I can see why this place would be very busy during a Nationals game but other than that, if you really want to try good food this was not the place. read more

I got there around 11 am and it was not busy, but it looks like its a place that fills up later in the day. We ordered oysters and entrees and one drink. The oysters were good, however my sandwich was not. The sausage tasted burnt and the smokey tomato sauce didn't seem to fit. The naked and famous drink was good. My friend said her pasta was so good and that she would go back. Overall, I'll go back but would not order the sandwich. When I arrived, the hostess scolded me that my reservation wasn't for outside seating. Even though there were many outside tables open in the dining room, they said we could only sit in the bar. In the bar, they insisted we could only have one menu for four people at the table. In her haste with shared menu, my dad's wife accidentally ordered hard seltzer because it was listed under canned beer. Menu is limited. Cauliflower was great and sunset was beautiful. read more
