We were far enough away from neighbors and everyone was masked up when moving around. The service was really, let's say.... excellent. Our server was not pushy and super informative. The TSL Toddy. Exactly what the doctor ordered. Bourbon, Tawny port, Farm Honey, Lemon (you know in case you have a non COVID cold - weird, but that still exists lol), and Gingersnap bitters. It was delicious, and the best tasting medicine I'd had all year. Okay, okay, so it's day one of the year. $13. I had two, and was not driving. Not heavy on the alcohol front, so like medicinal like and more soothing! Started with some roasted Honeynut Squash that had a little kick to it. Spicy walnuts, goat cheese, and fried sage. Tasty portion. Squash cooked perfectly. Just had to scrape it out of its skin. I was a lot less impressed with the lobster roll. I expected more (maybe it's the summertime me), but the hotdog bun was basic, and the meat looked previously frozen. Sort of a bit of shrinkage from the cold water (insert joke here). I came here on my visit to DC and sat outdoors, which had a nice view and was covered from the sun (depending on where you sit) with an outdoor bar area and TVs. The food was honestly really good! We ordered a couple of oysters, baked pimento crab dip, crispy fish sandwich (super crispy), and side of crispy Brussels sprouts (super crispy). We dined here last Saturday and had a great experience. We didn't have a reservation but we were able to secure a table. The caveat is that for those without reservations, you can only stay for 90 minutes. More than enough time for us, but just throwing that out there in case you wanted to stay longer. Additionally, we were able to bring our dog. I ordered a mulled rosé (one of their winter specials), the clam chowder as an appetizer, and their popular lobster roll. As I wasn't expecting too much from just a cup of clam chowder, I was genuinely surprised to see that it was brimming with clams, potatoes, bacon, celery, and oyster crackers. The chowder is more on the watery side than a thick chowder, but I didn't mind. The lobster roll was delicious, and there was so much lobster it was practically spilling over. My husband ordered the New England smash burger, and he enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed my lobster roll. There are plenty of heat lamps, so I felt very warm despite the cold temperatures. Service was very friendly and receptive. Our server even brought over a bowl of water for our dog. Even when our initial server's shift ended, another server picked up as if nothing had happened. The outdoor seating is fantastic but unfortunately the weather was a little off so we sat inside. We were probably the 3rd table to be seated for the day. Ordered some appetizers, plenty of drinks and entrees for each diner. The chilaquiles were delicious and the beet and cheese salad (I forget what it was called) was tasty too. It was odd though that they struggled to find anything vegetarian for my niece. I understand that it's seafood and oysters, but it's easy to throw a veggie burger or grilled cheese on the menu for those who don't eat meat. I've been passing this place (probably since it's been open) on my route home and never stopped. I assumed it was a overpriced tourist trap because of location and had no interest in going. The other day I wanted to get some food close to home and I'm bout tired of Barracks Row/Eastern Market dining scene, so it was finally time to visit. WHY AINT NOBODY TELL ME BOUT THIS SPOT?!! Mad as a mug that I could have been going to Saltline this entire time x_____x. All my food was delicious, the starters, oysters, entree, the drinks and the service was great. Not overly priced either, for two of us about $150 which is including at least two drinks pp two starters and entree. We were seated promptly, then waited about 15 minutes to be greeted by our waiter. This was at 6:30 and it was not busy. The waiter came to greet us, gave us water and then told us if we needed anything to "let him know" and proceeded to walk away. I won't go into the details I will just mention a few things that I think are notable: - service was horrible, it was not busy but drinks and food took ages, we were seated at 630 and it took over 45 minutes just to get appetizers and drinks. - missing ingredients, not sure if this is by design but they were out of several things that came with food items that we had ordered, nothing was 86'd they just told us that they didn't have it either well after we had ordered it or they brought it to the table without the ingredient.. who is managing this place? One of the things was cheese... for a cheeseburger. Like come on mannnnnn. - Seafood was not fresh nor tasty. In fact all of the food except the French fries was terrible and not remotely satisfying. - Waiter was made aware that my wife has a dairy allergy, when they brought the food out they did not know which lobster roll was dairy free. Couldn't say for sure and they said "well one of them was on the ticket as dairy free." We ended up guessing which one it was because we didn't want to wait another hour for the food. - lobster rolls tasted really weird. The lobster itself had no taste and was probably frozen and not fresh, tasted like rubber. Worst dining experience I have had in ages and completely overpriced. Had to make myself another meal when I got home because the food was terrible and not filling. At the end of the meal we asked to speak to a manager and we were told they weren't available. Oh, and they charge a 4% surcharge because "operating a restaurant is expensive." If you can't pay your staff a living wage and run a successful business at the same time without passing that cost on directly to the customer maybe you shouldn't be open... just a thought. read more

We loved how they had a spacious outdoor patio with a bar. Definitely a fun place to sit and eat as the weather gets nicer. Service (3.5/5): Service was a bit slow. We waited about 15-20 minutes before our waitress came up to us and asked what we wanted to eat and drink. During those 15-20 mins she was occupied by other tables around us, however we waited patiently considering that they might be understaffed. In addition, we had to flag down the busboy a few times to ask for more water. In all honesty, we didn't really see our waitress during our visit even though she was attentive to other guest around us. Overall, service wasn't memorable. Food (3.5/5): For starters we ordered the Stuffies and Pimento Crab Dip. We HIGHLY recommend the Pimento Crab Dip as it was our favorite dish. The crab flavor was perfect and wasn't overwhelming. The Stuffies, on the other hand, were just ok-- nothing to write home. It had too much breading, not enough meat. For entrees, we ordered the Lobster Roll ($30) with a side of Brussel Sprouts and the Steak & Eggs. The roll was smaller than I thought but it was filled with a good amount of lobster meat. I do wish they added more red, claw meat. The Steak and Eggs was our least favorite-- it was pretty bland and it was very light on the chimichurri sauce. We also loved their Brussel sprouts-- it was super crispy and flavorful! For drinks we ordered the Shandy, which was surprisingly strong and very refreshing on this beautiful Spring afternoon. This was my second time visiting The Salt Line. I went this past Wednesday night, when the Washington Nationals were in the Playoffs so the Navy Yard was extremely busy. When my friend and I arrived at 7pm, we were greeted by two friendly hostesses and seated right away (we had a reservation). We had the best server (shot out to Ryan) who was very attentive and gave us terrific service throughout our 3 hours at the restaurant. We started off our fest with two appetizers (fried octopus and gulf bay scallops) which were delicious! We also ordered a dozen oysters which we let Ryan choose (we are so not oyster connoisseurs) that were all hearty and tasted great. The manager, Jordan, stopped by our table and asked how we were doing. We appreciated the check in and appreciated even more the rockfish tartare that he dropped off compliments of the house. Even though we barely had any room left, my friend tried the crispy skin rockfish and I opted for the Portuguese stew as our entrees. We both shared the crisspy brussel sprouts as a side and were in love with how they melted in our mouths. My friend opted for the white Malbec for a wine while I stuck with a Bourbon on the rocks. We didn't have room for desert (and I took home most of my entree which ended up being lunch the next day), but my friend wanted something sweet so tried the port wine on the desert menu. She didn't love it but said it was good; she just wanted something more earthy I guess. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend this restaurant. Boasted as being a welcoming place to experience quality seafood and New England fare, our experience at the Salt Line on New Year's Eve was anything but welcoming. From the moment we were seated until the end of our meal, it was clear that our server did not want to be working on NYE, which is understandable but not something that guests should be able to ascertain. A few of the guests in our party had celebrated NYE for 2022 at this Salt Line location and experienced streamers, NYE hats, a midnight toast, and an overall great time, which is why we decided to celebrate there to bring in 2024. We called ahead and were told that the restaurant would close at midnight, same as last year, but we're hurriedly kicked out of the restaurant at 11:30 pm this year, leaving most of our guests to ring in the new year in dismay whilst driving home from the restaurant instead of with a glass of champagne. The vibe from all of the employees was very much "please leave," and they did everything but turn the lights off. Prior to being rushed out of the restaurant, we were not warned of the kitchen closing, and thus some of us left the restaurant still hungry. Our waitress also did not offer us any dessert, and the one person who did manage to order dessert before the kitchen was closed was served a disappointing stack and sloppily decorated Mille-Feuille. To top things off, our waitress never informed us ahead of time that she would not be able to take split payments for a large group, so I had to spend 10 minutes hand-calculating totals on the back of a receipt so that she could take everyone's card. It's 2024; that should no longer be a problem, and if it is an issue, guests should be notified ahead of time to avoid issues like this. If you're spending over $800 on a bill at a restaurant, competent and welcoming service should be a given, not seen as optional because the waitress is already guaranteed her 20% gratuity. The food here is unfortunately not good enough and too pricey (plus a 4% surcharge) to put up with the subpar service. read more

We got a high top, and the patio has a mix of bar area, high tops, and rocking chairs/low tables. Ordered and paid using a QR code linked menu. Bathrooms were very clean. We tried four different oysters total, and they came out very clean and cold. Loved the Portuguese stew with a generous helping of seafood and delicious broth. Let me help you by taking it backwards through the night. We walked off the after dinner taffy getting back to parking which was two blocks away with the baseball game traffic. It hurt a little paying the check but I was happy to tip the wait staff for making our anniversary dinner a joy. There was room for dessert with the fair size portions. We shared a Banana split, half chocolate and half vanilla. You can guess what half I got. Our meals were the catch of the day which was Sea Robin and Prime Babette Sirloin. I didn't make a big deal taking pictures but I should have, both looked amazing. They were both cooked perfect, with seasoned vegetables and sauces complimenting them. The clam chowder was hot, it came out late but better than cold. If they served the heirloom tomato salad hot it would probably still be good but as it was we enjoyed it cold. That was it for the sides we tried but at a nearby table we got a look at the coodles which looked like bite sized cod fish stuffed potato skins. To drink, the table water would suffice it didn't taste like tap and I like how the pitcher pours out smooth. Since it was a celebration the Anxo cider blanc complimented my meal nicely and my wife had coke with her steak. She didn't like the Parker House rolls but I thought the crispy crust with chewy inside was perfect. read more

I decided on the salt line. Reviews were pretty good, so I made a reservation for Saturday Aug 21 at 6:15. No close metro stop....so I decided to drive. Lots of garages around. The Nats are out of town, should be smooth as glass. As i get closer to the restaurant I see signs for "event parking $30". What event....DC is so unpredictable. $30 for parking. I paid $20 to see Elton John at Verizon center. Finally I see a spot and quickly turn the car around. I emphasize quickly. I hike the 6 blocks to the restaurant and get a seat inside. The waiter comes over and I order an Other Half (Ivy City brew) and look at the menu. I decided on the smash burger which showed up on a few websites as very good. Waiter returns after a while and I put my order in. Take into consideration, the place is jammed. Wall to wall people. Eventually my food comes and I'm dry. Waiter vanishes and I'm eating without something to wash it down with. The burger (two patties on a fresh bun) are excellent. The fresh cut fries are to die for. Fresh is the name of the game here. Finally the waiter comes back with most of the dinner gone and I order another brew (which is also excellent). I finish the food and relax with the brew. The time comes to go and no waiter. Finally I flag him down and ask for my check. After a while (again) he returns and I pay the bill and I;m out the door. Food is excellent. Service is spotty. I'll be back. If you know me I have two favorites. One I love being near the water. Two I love seafood. Now I picked this restaurant in particular because of those two reasons. Our server Daniel was very attentive to our needs and always available. He definitely stayed on top of things. Our adult beverages was very satisfying. I had the fishhouse punch. My husband tried the no good deed. The reason for the three stars comes from the food. Let me remind you. This place is very costly. Now I don't have a problem with that when your food is outstanding. Now I can't say that it was. My Watersman Platter was over salted. They stack tons of fries underneath to give the appearance of alot of seafood. Now it was quite a bit of seafood but not the actual amount it appeared to look like. I enjoyed it but they must have tried to live up to it's name because it's not necessary to apply that much sodium to anyone's meal not knowing their health condition. Word to the Chef go easy on the sodium. My husband Portuguese Stew was good but not much of it. They definitely needed that sour dough bread with it to even get full. My mom had the crispy fish sandwich. She said it was ok. Our total came over $100.00 for three people. As stated we don't mind paying top notch prices for good quality food. So I'm willing to try them out again. The scenery really was amazing. Next time I will try the lobster roll. I really hope the chef take my advice on not highly salting a $30.00 plate. We found The Salt Line listed as one of the restaurants with the best burgers in the District, and they are not lying, I absolutely loved their burger, so much that we ended up going two days in a row. I love that they use a potato bun which has just the right amount of moisture to keep it soft and not dry. They literally have ONE burger in their menu, and they have nailed it. I did not have to make any changes or substitutions to it. It is a smash type burger with two patties, you can get it with fries or greens which is a salad. The burgers are a lot smaller than what I originally expected but packed with flavor. Why not 5 stars you would ask? Despite me having the intention to keep going back to satisfy my occasional burger craving, their service leaves a lot to be desired, everyone is distant and cold. The first night we sat at the bar, ordered our food and then the bartender just disappeared and no one checked on us, the second night we sat at a table and similar experience. This is a great place to stop by before and after a Nats game for drinks. The location can't be beat- right next to Nats stadium. The outdoor bar is nice and they have a great draft beer selection. It can get packed during game days but the bartenders do move fast. Now, for the food, it was quite disappointing. For a restaurant that tries to model itself with other New England style restaurants it needs to improve. Maybe add mussels, crab cake and steamed clams for appetizers and fish and chips and Cape Cod scallops for entrees. I tried to order the Nashville Hot Soft Shell appetizer, but it was already gone by 6 PM. Our server did provide us with the Coddies since they ran out of the soft shell. However, it was very dry inside. I was expecting something moist like the ones at Jaleo. It was tough to eat. They should add a dipping sauce to this dish. The lobster roll was just okay but it's not a pound of lobster meat. It feels like less than a half pound and it's priced at $26. I got the Maine style and I didn't really taste any butter. Simply put, this place has some of the best Clam Chowder I've ever had. It's not the traditional thick and milky soup you're used too. It's a thinner base and somehow manages to add more flavor. The oysters are fresh and they usually have a few different choices for briny and sweet.
