This place is just a few minutes drive from the tourist traps but seemed like another world. Everyone was so friendly, and the atmosphere so casual. The ambiance provides half of the appeal. The other half is the outstanding food. I got the shrimp and grits. Hands down, best I've ever had. Dad and bro got the crab cake, which I'm sure was part of the daily catch off the dock out back of the restaurant. The crabbing boat moored close by the patio suggested so. Mom got the seared yellowfin, also delicious. Couldn't resist the coconut cream pie and the carrot cake at the end to seal the deal. We discovered the Salt Box Cafe while driving around to the bay side of Kill Devil Hills. It's now our favorite place down here. They allowed us to dine out in their picnic area with our dog. The food was amazing. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. The chef came out and talked to our vegan daughter in law, then made her a special vegan dish that wasn't on the menu. My shrimp and grits dish was fabulous. The setting is pleasant and comfortable. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating! We will definitely be back. read more

We were very disappointed to arrive at this restaurant and be told they wouldn't seat us. We had a 5:30 reservation that had been confirmed this morning. The server that greeted us accused us of lying about the reservation time. Both she and the manager were extremely rude and clearly did not care about customer service or trying to accommodate our party in any way. I, nor anyone in my party or our friends, if we can help it, will be returning to this restaurant. Not to mention they just possibly lost a loyal customer. Good luck Saltbox. Visited for the first time on 8/29/19. Absolutely loved the food and the atmosphere. We didn't have a reservation but got there early enough to be able to enjoy a seat outside. BBQ shrimp appetizer was outstanding and being able to dip the bread in the sauce was amazing. I had the red snapper special and my wife had the crab cake dinner. Both were delicious, with great flavors added to the dishes from the sides and sauces that came with each. We have added this to our top 10 restaurants to visit when in the Outer Banks. Not super creative but executed exceedingly well. Not only copious amounts of andouille sausage but perfect balance of other strong spices in broth and deliciously creamy / cheesy grits. Butternut squash ravioli dinner in cream sauce was hit of night; grilled rib eye huge yet cooked exactly to MR and seasoned well. Local sautéed red drum perfectly cooked w mild chili cream sauce. Milk chocolate cake was big, delicious, not too rich and begged for a glass of milk to accompany grandma's cake. Would have hoped for homemade ice cream to accompany cake. It always makes for a great experience when chef / owner / newlywed visited Every table. Chef talked to us for over 10 minutes and was clearly well educated on local seafood and sources. This place is amazing!!!! The food is fresh with an organic farm to table focus. Aye here while on a brief winter trip to the OBX. This place made me feel like I had been invited to a nice dinner with a local farmers family. The restaurant has a home like feel and is well laid out. The team in the kitchen did everything perfect. Must place to go to. Very warm and inviting place to go to. Best to make reservations. Sunday brunch a must have. All the entrées are over the top and then the desserts, the best way to top off your great meal. They use local produce and fresh fish. The owners Randolph and Amanda (I hope I got that correct) they are the best, very personable and warm. The entrées and desserts are all their own recipes. Coffee is great. Servers are top notch. The staff are culinary wizards: the chefs (husband and wife) studied New Orleans and Maryland cuisines respectively, each adding their own to an interesting mix of seafood and southern styles that is The Salt Box. I split the ribs along with the shrimp and grits for an entree, the BBQ shrimp and crab cake avocados for an appetizer, and the chocolate peanut butter cake as a desert (which tasted like an amazing giant Reese's peanut butter cup in cake form). Grilled tuna with the Korean BBQ sauce was awesome and the togarashi spice definitely had a little kick but I enjoyed it. I was glad to find a well rated place off the main strip, but was skeptical when I saw the outside. However, all my concerns were quickly dealt with when we went inside. The staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I ordered the cinnamon sugar sweet potato fries and Korean BBQ wings as appetizers. Best wings I've had! My kids gobbled down the fries with glee. We ordered wine from the drink menu and I was happy with the selection of wines that were by the glass or bottle. For our entree I ordered the grilled pork loin and my husband got the crab cakes. I don't care for crab cakes much, but these were delicious, and he cleaned his plate. My pork loin was perfectly cooked. That never happens, so I was gratefully surprised. I had saved the BBQ sauce in case it was lacking in flavor, but I never touched it. Best pork dish I've ever had! Even the fingerling potatoes were seasoned perfectly. We ended with the coconut lemon pie and practically licked the plate. Great homemade pie is hard to find, but they nailed it. This was the best meal I've had all week while vacationing in Nags Head.
