I met a friend here for lunch today. Never heard of the place before now. Cute interior and patio, but it was a little windy so we ended up inside. Had a delicious Aviation cocktail that rivals others I've had at bars. BUT....let me say, the ONLY reason I am taking the time to post a review is that the French Dip is THE BEST sandwich I have EVER had!!!! It was so good, I ordered another one to bring home to eat some more!!! Often French dips are rather bland.. just bread and beef and broth. This one has: grass-fed shaved sirloin, crimini mushrooms, onions, swiss, dill aioli, garlic buttered ciabatta, au jus. The perfect combination of flavors that are to die for. The Sample Room has been one of my favorite places for the past 15 years, cute quaint little place in NE Mpls. Their menu is always changing, their plating is always 5 star. Don't currently have a happy hour menu but maybe it will come back one day. We had a delicious mexican honey light tap beer and the pork tenderloin, and it was in no way your average pork tenderloin and it was melt in your mouth, with a side of brussel sprouts (which I forgot to snap a photo of) I think they were roasted. Cool stamped tin ceiling and candles at every table. Not much street parking right now as they have construction going on nearby and no lot because they have a huge tent set up. The food is worth the hassle of parking though. Great service every time we have been here. read more

First visit here tonight. Did not disappoint. We sat at the bar and Ryan (the bartender) was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. The house Old Fashioned was delightful. Had the shrimp ceviche as a warmup and it was fresh and light and well seasoned. Hubby had the Bottineau burger and said it was in his top three for burgers. I had the Rueben and the corn beef was mouth watering tender. The fries with the sandwich and burger were great. Highly recommend! read more

As the name itself says, the plates are sample size even though the price is like most decent restaurants. 1. Reservation/wait time Well, we decided to try out this restaurant for some time and stopped by. There were enough seats at 7 pm and was no need to reserve ahead. 2. Service was pleasant and fast. Our server checked on us just enough to make it comfortable without being too intrusive. 3. Food Hand cut fries: was good 3 meat meatloaf: was not at all impressed, I can do better Seared scallops: I also had better scallops elsewhere, it was just okay Mixed drinks were also okay. Nothing bad, but just not exceptional and/or interesting. 4. Ambience It is quite dark inside with wooden furniture, looks more like bar/brewery feel than a restaurant with long tables and booths. I won't come here for a special dinner. It was worth trying, but really not my kinda place. 5. Parking Free street parking everywhere as they are located in not very busy neighborhood. In short, it is a solid okay place. Bacon. Truffle. Popcorn. It's a must. The Sample Room has a great happy hour offering along with a super chill atmosphere. We ordered some curds, popcorn, and got some Cubans and fries (not on the HH menu) to celebrate the end of the week. Again, the popcorn is just a done deal. Flavorful and you won't want to stop eating it. The curds were not my favorite. Something with that spice that's on there, just didn't hit me right. The Cubans were tasty and fries crisp. The only off-putting thing was our server. He was plenty friendly, but as we were eating he came by and picked up our plates and wiped down the table and then...set the plates back down. So confused about that interaction. It wasn't super busy so I don't think we were being rushed out, but just kindly leave the plate on the table and then clean away after we've paid and bid you adieu. read more

Read to the end - it's insane. I met a friend I had not seen in years at The Sample Room on 11/16/24. We decided to meet at 5 pm, which was early enough that we could snag a table in hopes that we could spend the evening eating, drinking and catching up. We ordered a bottle of wine and a charcuterie board, and around 7 pm, our server asked if we wanted more bread/crackers for what we had left on our board and when she came back with that, she told us that we had about 20 minutes to finish up before the reservation arrived for that table. My friend and I were so confused! I asked the server how is it that we had to get up and leave to table we were at. She explained that this was a thing since the pandemic. I told her I didn't see anything like that listed on the website, nor was anything said about it when we were sat. She said she would talk to her manager. I saw them speaking and made eye contact with the white haired, black-framed glasses manager, who shortly after started circling our table. The second time he came round, I asked to speak to him. I asked if this rule is listed on their website, to which he answered that it has been a thing since the pandemic. I understood that but I was trying to say that this type of thing should be listed on the site or at the very least, they should have mentioned that when we were sat. As I was trying to plead my case, he kept interrupting me. I stopped him and said, "I am trying to speak" and his face stiffened, he walked behind my friend to the other side of the table, and grabbed our plates and started piling them on the food we still had left on our board, and while bent over our table, he said, "You know what, f*ck you. You can go ahead and write your little review, you two are done here." Then blew out our candle! We were so SHOCKED and I responded by telling him he can f*ck all the way off, and he grabbed our food but before walking away, he looked at me and said, "Kiss my ass." He took our food, that was paid for by this point because we were getting kicked out for dining there, and still had wine to drink! I was appalled. So, here is my "little review" and I will never be back. read more

This was our first real date night out (with a babysitter for the baby!) and this was a winning choice for sure. The drink menu was incredible, full of classics as well as some fun craft cocktails. My fiancé got The Last Word and it was perfect for sitting out on the patio. The lime and gin were so light and perfectly mixed, though after he squeezed the lime he felt it was too bright for his taste (still perfect for mine). I had the ginger lemonhead and it was so amazing, I ended up ordering a second. Our server helped me decide between this drink and another gin cocktail. The sugar rim was a nice touch to this fresh lemon drink. I had worried the vodka may have a bite but was thrilled to find it didn't. I would say this is a must try for anyone looking for a delicious, refreshing summer cocktail. On to our food choices...we loved the fried green tomatoes. They were breaded with corn meal--a nice touch for texture and a good break from wheat breadcrumbs. The hot sauce wasn't too spicy but was just enough to make these unique. I also loved adding a bit of the fresh greens to each bite. For dinner, I chose the curry pork lettuce wraps. The star of that meal was definitely the dipping sauce. I could see it had crushed red peppers but the overall taste was smoky and savory. I had forgotten to use it for my first wrap and 100% regretted not having more opportunities to dip in this sauce once I tried it. The jicama was a fun surprise. My fiancé tried it and enjoyed the freshness of the food but felt the pork was salty. I'm not sure I agree, but wanted to put that out there. He chose the elk burger and loved the meat and bun. I thought it seemed pretty rare, so if you want it more medium-well, definitely mention it when ordering. The fries were a show stopper in this meal. They are so flavorful, melt in your mouth with the creamy center, and aren't greasy at all. No need to wipe your fingers off after snacking on these! Overall, we had a delightful experience. Everything we ordered was incredible. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. The ambience was great out on the patio near the park and the river. Highly recommend a date night here! read more

I love The Sample Room! I could eat their bacon fries and drink White Russians there all day. The staff are friendly, yet professional. The decor is kinda dark and moody, which I really dig. They have a seasonable menu that is always changing, but keep the staples year round. I'm not exactly an adventurous eater, but even I couldn't resist branching out from my usual order to try some seasonal risotto...which was delicious. They use a lot of the same ingredients across several dishes, which is smart because it keeps food cost down and you can trust they are fresh and in season if a specific item, like mushrooms are being featured a lot in the current menu. read more

What do you do at The Sample Room? Sample a bunch of stuff- duh! For drinks it's always hard to choose between a specialty cocktail or one of their flights- why set artificial limits- do a little of both. We tried the whiskey flight of the moment which was Kentucky themed, and a scotch flight. Both had a nice variety/range of flavors. Cocktails we tried were the Haute Diggety Dog, and the Ginger Lemonhead which were great refreshing drinks on a hot summer evening. For food we started with the amusement board. It is a good size and variety for nibbling through as a starter. We then ordered the chislic and morels- I would not call this dish a hit. It's the reason for the 4 star rating rather than 5. The meat was just way too salty. Finally though, the standout of the evening- the mussels! That broth! It's so good we asked for more bread to soak up every last drop. I love the patio space! Obviously a great outdoor space on a warm MN summer night is something that can't be passed up, but they have the patio set up to enjoy almost year round. read more

I don't know why it has taken me so long to try this little gem-but I'm sure it has to do with the fact that you can't make reservations-but as my buddy and I were out on a quiet summer Monday night, I decided to give it a try. Arrived a little before 6 and was able to score a table on the modest sized patio. There was a nice breeze blowing so it was great sitting outside. Service was very attentive with lots of filling of the water glasses and our waiter constantly checking to see if we were ready for more food or drink. As is our habit when my buddy and I go out, we sampled lots of menu items: -Sriracha cheese curds-wonderfully spicy and good -bacon truffle popcorn (small size)-not too much truffle which was good, a nice balance of flavors -meatloaf-good but not a huge portion -corn cakes-excellent mix of Mexican style flares-one of my favorite items of the night -fish and chips-for me just ok-although the crispy fries were quite good-fish batter was crispy and thick but fish lacked flavor -mini donuts-just like the ones from the state fair-crunchy and fresh -summer sangria-so very refreshing-easy to have a bunch of glasses and at $8 felt affordable Great setting, attentive service, interesting chow-all great reasons to give them a try read more

So the Cuban is not pictured, but it is in my top 5 for sure. Fries are fantastic. Their cocktails are creative and tasty (get that North Shore Gin). This place understands the importance of a good sauce! The food quality is incredible and the chefs know flavor! Certainly food from the soul. Photos are of the Burger and the Devils Haircut cocktail. Easy (free) street and lot parking tucked away on a residential side street in Northeast. There's a park to the left of the building, and they have a small patio facing the park. Brunch AND lunch are served on weekends, something I very much appreciate. It is seat yourself, however, there is usually someone to point you in the right direction. Even though it is a small place, it is never too crowded. This is quickly becoming my new go-to "spot". Pretty unassuming spot off of Marshal in NE Minneapolis but definitely worth stopping by. They always have a diverse menu and I've not had a bad dish. Some favorites have been their mussels, pappardelle, and chickpea tacos. Although, I think they change up their menu frequently. The building is neat, very old school NE. I see all the 4 or 5 star reviews and it just isn't my experience or opinion that this place is that awesome. First, it's cramped and dark. There's a barely existent doorway or waiting area so in winter time, you're either packed like sardines waiting for a table or you have no choice but to stand outside. Second, it's so dark that no one in my group of 6 could read our menus. We looked like idiots all holding our cell phone lights so we could see the menu, let alone try to take food pics for Yelp! Portions are on the smaller side, which given the name of the restaurant, is to be expected. I don't think prices are fair though. You have to order an appetizer + entree + dessert to be full. The taste and quality of food is pretty decent but I don't think it makes up for the small space and unusually dim lighting. Also, a word about service - they're not rude but throughout our meal, I just felt our server was cold and curt. There was no level of warmth coming from her so that put us off. Would I come back again? Probs not. It was OK to sample once (no pun intended) but I don't see myself as a repeat customer. read more

Never a bad meal at The Sample Room. We enjoyed our time just as we've enjoyed every other meal. The wine list has a great selection, and offers some flight options. I love the fact that the menu isn't huge. It's not small, but it is a great size that makes it easy to pick a meal. I don't care for experiences that require reading a book and having to draw a pros and cons list in order to make a decision. IMPORTANT: Happy Hour is from 3pm-6pm. We came to the Sample Room with the intention of having a tapas style meal. The menu items are more like entrees than tapas but we ordered a handful of things to split. The jam on top of the duck was amazing but I realized the raw center was not for me. The heirloom salad was super tasty and a good complement to everything else. The Cuban was the best I've ever had. I don't normally care for Cuban sandwiches but I would 100% order it again. There was only 1 dessert item that wasn't pulling at us so we skipped dessert. One of my new favorite restaurants hands down now! The menu has a nice variety of items and the food is spectacular and gets five stars. Our favorite dish was the Beef Tartare. We also liked the cauliflower veggie dish a lot and the scallops stood out. The asparagus had a good balsamic vinaigrette sauce. They have $3.50 happy hour wine but ran out of the $2.50 Surley tap last night. They also ran out of the pork ribs which was also disappointing since they didn't mention it right when we got there and had to pick a different item on the fly. And the service was only mediocre. The space is also kind of small but gives it a more intimate feel and there's only one bathroom stall for women. It's pretty casual inside too and there's an outdoor seating area. The Sample Room lived up to its 4-star rating Friday night. I'd even give it 4.5. I haven't been here for a few years because of some negative experiences with service several times in the past. On a whim, I decided to give it another shot Friday night with a friend. I love whims. After a warm welcome and being seated, it didn't take long to eyeball the cheese selection. We chose two cheeses on the Chef Select menu ($11) - 2 thumbs up. Nice presentation, great taste. Perfect to get the palette going. And admit it -- cheese is a fun conversation topic. For simple eating, our server recommend the Cuban sandwich. Excellent. The accompanying fries were great too. Plenty to bring some home to snack on later. After my long hiatus, I'm on my way to once again becoming a Sample Room neighborhood super fan. I'm actually planning to go back this afternoon to sample more of the menu and perhaps a beer or wine flight. Other Yelp reviews and photos of the Charcuterie Platter have my mouth watering. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere but the food was disappointing. For an app I had the lion's mane cakes. I wanted the beef tartare but they were out. The cakes were bland and there was no where near enough sauce on the side. My date ordered the lobster linguine which barely had any actual lobster and tasted like bacon grease. I had shrimp and grits they weren't awful but I've had better. The shrimp had tails which wouldn't be a problem but they put it in a bowl and served it with a spoon. I had to dig the shrimp out with my fingers and then put the tails back in the bowl since I had no where to put them other than the bowl. My date thought the waitress was rude I didn't entirely agree with that. At the end of dinner she told us they ran out of desserts. And all of that for $80! Probably will never go back. read more

I had the pleasure of devouring several delectables (which I would order all again): *Sweet Corn Cakes: I would baptize my first born with this dish. With several corn cakes dressed in chipotle crema, black beans, pico de gallo, avocado, and mojo, I, for a second, imagined myself eating this while sitting outside on a Florida beach. It made me forget, for a second God hates Minnesota, and that's why he cursed this beautiful piece of Earth with awful weather. *Nordeast Hotdish: I promised myself to eat clean pre-Thanksgiving until I saw Nordeast Hotdish on the menu. Hot dish, if you didn't know, is just an umbrella term for throwing a bunch of carbs, meats, veggies, and cheese into a baking dish. (It's sexy AF ***clap-clap-clap***.) With shredded beef, mushrooms, peas, corn, carrots, truffle oil, hash browns, and parmesan, it reminded me of what the nuns used to feed me at the daycare I used to attend as a shorty. God bless this dish. God bless those nuns. *Roasted Beet Salad: Beets have been "in," for a hot minute thanks to hipsters. And as a self-proclaimed beet-slut -- I love red or pink things -- the chunks of orange and greens provided freshness, the pumpkin seeds offered texture, only awful people hate goat cheese (and theirs was wonderful), and the thyme dressing pulled everything together. I could consume an entire bowl of this stuff. 2) RELAXING AMBIENCE FOR ADULTS who want to have memorable conversations with fam bam. Well, at least that's what I experienced. The intimate lighting fits the aesthetic and the music doesn't cause for your ears to bleed. Oh, and much love to the beautifully lacquered tables and chairs. I'd kick it on the regular here. 3) MINNESOTA NICE SERVICE that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and the food came out quickly, too. Went out to celebrate my son's 21st birthday -- and when given multiple options, he chose The Sample Room. I included a photo of my own meal, the farro salad with chicken. It was really beautiful and really good. The birthday boy...ahem man...ordered the Cuban sandwich, his girlfriend the Hotdish, and my husband a pasta dish. Everything tasted great (so they claimed...nobody was sharing). My husband wasn't super crazy about his pasta. He said it was good, but not as good as his go-to at Green Mill -- and not even as good as the spaghetti I make at home. I mean, my spaghetti is amazing...but when you go out for dinner and you pay a good amount of money for it, you expect better than what your wife makes at home. Also, it was incredibly small portion wise...and he has a big appetite. The service was so/so. Our waitress was very kind and didn't screw anything up -- but we had to ask for water refills and our check. I still give 4 stars, because my food was delicious, and both the kids plates were practically licked clean too. I like the ambiance of this place, cozy and urban. A great place for HH in the NE of Minneapolis. The dinner menu also has lots of variety including vegetarian caulini tacos, yucca fries with the Vegas strip steak. The chimichurri on the strip steak was bright and flavorful. They also offer wine flights and excellent cocktails. I would give it five stars, but the servers seem rushed during service. It is, though, a very underrated place for Minneapolis and should be considered for a great meal. read more

I try so hard to like this place, but the food always falls short and why why why is the service so bad? I ordered the mushroom bucatini last night. The menu promised walnuts, but there wasn't a single walnut to be found. I wonder why? One might consider asking your server about a missing ingredient, but you'd only be further disappointed. Sadly (and painfully obvious to everyone), the very last thing on a Sample Room server's mind is whether or not you are actually enjoying yourself. Another memo to the kitchen: pull back a little on the garlic. Our flatbread and that sad little bucatini were swimming in the stuff. Chef is like: "Who cares about walnuts? We got garlic, homies!" I'm a huge fan of fried Brussels sprouts, and I can say without a doubt that this has one of the BEST Brussels sprouts dish I've had in multiple major cities. That dish alone is worth 5 stars. The biscuits and gravy were also phenomenal - get it with the eggs. It was so good that we ordered a second one. Beef tartare was pleasant but not too special. Service was wonderful and the ambience is relaxed. I would go back just for those two dishes alone. read more

Saw the good reviews here so I thought I'd check it out myself and it is as advertised! I am now craving the sweet corn cakes I ordered last night. In total, I ordered the Three Meat Meatlof with the side of sweet corn cakes, and my date and I ordered the sriracha cheese curds to share to start. The meatloaf was just like my mom used to make it, but dare I say better! My date ordered the ribeye with a side of warm potato salad. She enjoyed both and was especially impressed by the ribeye. I am a sucker for good potato salad, but the almonds in this recipe threw me off a little bit. The ambiance is classy, but you don't have to dress up. We sat at the bar and the bartender provided ample banter throughout the night to add to the experience. Very much looking forward to stopping here again, but will be more prepared to spend close to $100 for two people. read more

First time there, last night. Early, 5:30, place was packed and noise volume was incredibly loud. However, my guest likes the place so we stayed. She has severe allergy to seafood, even if frying oil was used in cooking seafood, she cannot have it. So, she could not have the fried chicken. I asked for a small Caesar, very lightly dressed, and it came , sodden. Hard to get wait staff attention. Chicken wings with gochujang sauce was tasty. Dessert menu very limited and it summer friendly. No sorbets or fresh fruit. Very hot in dining room. Don't think I will be returning. read more
