I randomly popped into The Savoy during happy hour on a Friday. Unfortunately, I wasn't hungry at the time, so I didn't try any of the food, but the plates that passed by smelled great! My favorite thing I tried was the Emancipation frozen drink (tequila/ lemonade). It feels like a proper sports bar because of the amount of TVs they had, so I was able to catch one of the FIFA World Cup matches. For parties over a certain size okay, but if I'm just coming solo for a quick dinner or drink before heading home (& you serve me plastic), I just don't think that's right. The DJ was amazing with their set and the vibe was everything. I had the catfish and grits entree and it was beyond delicious. Our server was very attentive and answered every question we had. I did not have to wait to be served. She was there to check in on and take care of us the entire time. The only suggestion I would have is that they serve the dinner menu a little earlier in the day. We got there around 3:30 - 4:00. My cousin wanted the loaded fries, but they only serve them after 5 PM on Sundays. I go to the Savoy every now & then for a quick drink or to have something on the happy hour menu. I love the layout & there's plenty of outdoor seating with TVs & fans. The service is better when you're sitting at the bar than sitting anywhere else, and it can be difficult to flag someone down to help you. I've once sat for 15 minutes without being acknowledged. They're always playing good music, but sometimes it's too loud to the point where you can't hear the person you're conversing with. The parking is a nightmare in that area, sometimes I have to park a few blocks down, and there are also times when they charge for parking. Lots of space for improvement I visited on Veterans Day after finding out about the Savoy on Click2Houston. Com. They opened for lunch at 11am. I arrived shortly after 11am and all the chairs on the patio were still stacked on the tables. I walked in to inquire and there were two people sitting at the bar eating and one stood up, and advised I could sit anywhere, so I opted for the outside area. Positives: 1. The waitress was nice and knew the menu well. 2. She was also the bartender and made great drinks. 3. The music was great, created a fun environment to accompany the long wait. 4. There were lots of screens on the patio, I can see how this could be good for game day. 5. There was plenty of seating both inside and on the patio. Space for improvement : 1.The floor was completely wet at opening throughout the entire restaurant. 2. There was no toilet paper in the women's restroom and the trash cans were not lined with a bag. 3. There was a dirty mop outside the kitchen next to a large bucket of filthy mop water. 4. There was one waitress for over 10 parties sitting on the patio. They are grossly understaff. 5. The food took 45 minutes and arrived cold. Cold food isn't very appetizing but it tasted okay in that state. Wish I could have had it hot and fresh. 6. It took 20 minutes to get the check and pay. Overall, there is potential for improvement. This was our second attempt to eat at The Savoy. The first time we walked out due to poor service and waiting over 40 minutes for food. We decided to give them another try considering it was a Thursday and less likely to be busy. Guess busy has nothing to do with the poor service. We ordered salmon, fries and spinach - none of these items take long to cook. Even though there were orders ahead of ours; waiting an hour for food is ridiculous. Several times we stopped waitress's to check, which they agreed but never came back with the status. Finally we asked for a manager. The manager went to the kitchen and return with our food. The positive is that it was hot. That's where the positive end. The food arrived in to go containers with plastic silverware. Who does this??? This is not a fast food restaurant. Just a cheap way of serving food. Now the food; the salmon did NOT have an ounce of seasoning...no butter...no lemon. When we opened the plastic container with the spinach , you could tell again - no seasoning, no onion/bell pepper and it also looked undercooked . My friend tasted it and confirmed my suspicions. At least the fries were hot. The manager apologized and comp the entire check when they noticed we weren't eating. She mentioned it was due to a large party but we knew better. Drove down Emancipation street looking for the place that looked the most fun, this place was LIT. We had to park a block away (parking is crazy, read the signs, be careful). Line to get in but it moves fast. ID checks, men got searched. We went around 8pm it was already alive and booming. We went STRAIGHT to the bar and got these pink slush drinks (alcoholic) I can't remember the name, but they were in small cups and delicious. They were also overpriced though, 4 was $79. Tables were for reservations, standing room only really, people everywhere. The DJ was good! And they had a mechanic bull; I rode the mechanical bull twice. We stayed about 2hrs and dipped. I am originally from Third Ward, and even though I no longer live there, I still support numerous businesses in the Tre. One day, the folks at KTSU were discussing The Savoy on the radio, and I took their word that the food here is good. The loaded fries with fried chicken are apparently a hit, so that's exactly what I ordered. A family member ordered a burger. I asked what the rating is for the burger and was given a score of 8.5. To me, that is rather generous given the fact that the burger wasn't even dressed correctly. Just lettuce and cheese - no onion, sliced tomato or pickle for about $17. The loaded fries were good; however, at almost $21, this dish seemed overpriced to me. There's a discrepancy between the price cited on the online menu and the price on the receipt. Also, a $6 upcharge for the chicken but the base cost was over $14. I'm really paying that amount just for fries and cheese? How is that loaded?? With that said, I will always support Black-owned businesses, especially ones located in Third Ward. What saves this place is the fact the food is actually really good for what it is. The name is perhaps too fancy for the establishment because when I hear The Savoy, I think of the original Savoy in Harlem and "Stompin' At the Savoy." (LOL!!) But I also can have a sense of humor about it. I heard about the strawberry cake, and was advised this is only served on Wednesdays, during Ladies' Night. I had the worst experience ever at Savoy. My group and I came in for drinks and small bites, and we were told we could sit anywhere without a reservation sign. However, every table we chose--without a reservation sign was suddenly marked as "reserved" right after we sat down. We were moved twice before we decided to make an online reservation ourselves. After waiting for our reservation time, we ordered and paid for a hookah, only to have the host and servers refuse to bring it to us. We also tried to order drinks multiple times, but no one wanted to serve us. Eventually, we were asked to move again. A short, thin man who claimed to be the manager told us we were being pushed to the back of the service line and that our server didn't want to serve us because we already had drinks from the bar despite us being ready to order more. This was me and my girls first time at Savoy and it's a must Houston brunch spot for me now! We made reservations for Sunday Funday at 12:30 and the hostess brought us right to our table. We sat on the patio which had a lot of seating and tvs for entertainment and watching Sunday football. The servers and hosts are on top of their jobs there. When I asked the host about switching the stools out because they were a bit on the smaller side, she helped us get more comfortable sitting. When another waiter realized we hadn't been served yet, she immediately got someone to our table! We ordered the Catfish and grits, Shrimp and Grits, and the Chicken and Red Velvet Waffle with an extra waffle! We also ordered Mimosas, which you have with every type of juice! Our waiter listed some many options, we tried the Strawberry Lemonade! Ya'll everything was bussing, but I have to highlight the Shrimp and Grits because that was my entree! The vegetable topping and the creamy grits were a great combo with the large seasoned shrimp! I really enjoyed everything. The catfish was crispy and seasoned. The red velvet was good as well and not too sweet. The mimosas were also good and mixed with just enough juice. Got word that on the weekend this is the place to be so we decided to stop by to catch a vibe before heading to the Dolphins and Texans pre-season matchup. There wasn't much of a crowd upon our arrival. Being from Miami, I guess we should have inquired about a time that the party starts up because we had apparently stopped in too early, but the DJ was jamming, playing hit after hit! After finding street parking and being greeted by the hostess, we were told that there were a number of tables reserved that we couldn't occupy and was provided with the outdoor availability. What's cool about this place is that they are cognizant of there whether conditions and have fans throughout the establishment. They get an astounding A+++ for this! For brunch entrees we had the shrimp and grits which is served on a bed of creamy grits and toast. Really good! Additionally, we had the catfish, side of grits and eggs fried over hard. Amazing! No salt and pepper needed for anything and no hot sauce needed for the fish!
