She ordered the chicken and French toast while I got the chicken and waffle (with cinnamon on top!) Now, let me tell you.. The chicken IS TO DIE FOR. If your type of texture is CRUNCHY, you will love it!!! It was such a perfect crisp every bite- it blew our mind. My waffle had a nice crunch to it too. Although on the thin side, it was the right amount. If the waffle was any thicker I probably wouldn't have eaten as much as I did. I STILL had a few leftovers. That French Toast was mouth watering! There was also cinnamon on French Toast which made it taste even better! Now, when they give you the syrup, it's warmed up and served, so that when you pour it on the toast, be ready for a pour. First time at the Serving Spoon. I think my expectations were too high. Service is very friendly and welcoming though. Alex is very good. But the food: Hit or miss. What we ordered: 'The Cookie' (1 waffle w/ chicken drummettes) and a breakfast with catfish, eggs, and grits with a biscuit. The chicken was tasty and even better with Red Rooster though I wished I brought my travel sized bottle of Frank's Red Hot (cuz "I put that ish on everything!"). HOWEVER I guess no one could be bothered to pluck the last few feathers on my chicken. (See photo) The waffle was bland. The cinnamon couldn't save it. Neither could the butter and syrup. It was DOA. I have been wanting to try legit chicken and waffles, soul food status for the looongest time. As it happened, I was in the area with my sister and her bf b/c they were dropping me off at LAX. We had some time to kill, so of course I pulled out my handy dandy yelp app and found this gem of a place! I was worried there would be a wait, but when I called in, the friendly waiter told me there was no wait at all! Take note, we were here on a Friday morning around 10AM, so it was probably slower than if you were to come on the weekend during peak breakfast/brunch time. This place was located about 10 minutes from LAX. When we pulled in, we were lucky enough to snag a parking spot right in front of the establishment :D (there was probably a total of 20 parking spaces shared amongst the other businesses in the same plaza; I can't comment where I would have needed to park if I came on the weekend!). We headed in, and got a table right away. I'm not great with timing -- so the extra hour I thought I had before I needed to check in was quickly dwindling away. The staff here was so incredibly helpful. I let the seater know that we were trying to catch a flight, and she sent our waiter over almost immediately. My sister and I ended up sharing an order of chicken and waffles. Let me tell you, this was as good as it gets. The chicken was fried to perfection. The pieces weren't large (don't expect popeye status sizes) but very flavorful, crispy and not greasy. The waffles were of the thinner variety (maybe 1/3 of an inch thick?) and had a cinnamon coating on the outside. In my opinion, it was the perfect size to be eating with the chicken. Combined with the homemade maple syrup (not your overly sweetened kind), it was pure perfection. So, I have an appointment at 11:30 AM, and have about an hour to kill... Perfect time for breakfast! I go on yelp, and find this amazing hole in the wall that has a phenomenal breakfast! Let me give you the scenario... I pull into the parking lot and parking is packed, luckily I found a place to park about a block down. Usually this is a good indication that this is a good restaurant. So I walk in, and not to make this racist, but I am the only white person in this restaurant, which was a little intimidating. There was two parties of two people and the hostess said I can give you one large table if you guys want to spoon together. I had to hold in my laughter because I find that hilarious but I don't want to offend anybody. I did find a cool that they would ask that so you technically don't have to wait, and who knows you might make friends...? So they finally have an open seat at the counter, which I'm not much of a counter type of person but I just went with the flow. The funny part is that I ended up sitting in the handicapped seat, lol... But technically you can really tell its a handicap seat, I just saw a faded handicap sign in front of the place were sitting. Anyway moving on to service and food... Service was good they have really nice people working there, but extremely extremely busy. I feel bad for the guy sitting next to me, because he waited about 10 minutes to get his change for paying his bill. I felt pretty taken care of though. They came in took my order, brought up my food fairly quick, brought me my coffee fairly quick, and asked me for a refill on my coffee. Freakin great!! So after looking at the extensive menu, I ordered the Frank - it is four pieces of French toast, two eggs, and two bacon. They brought out the food pretty quick which made me kind of worried because it makes me wonder if it was premade. But after sinking my teeth into the first bite, I tasted nothing but delicious freshness. The French toast tasted phenomenal, the eggs were good, and I save the Best for last... The BACON. I love their bacon! They were nice thick juicy pieces that seriously tasted so good! If I'm in the area for breakfast again, this will now be my spot. Sadly it reminded me of my friend Pierre... It took The Serving Spoon 40 minutes to finish my order! I was told it would take only 15 minutes. However, when I arrive to pick it up, I waited close to 30 minutes to receive my order. Not only were two breakfast plates and salmon croquettes almost $50, they failed to include syrup and sugar for my waffle and grits. I was highly disappointed! I was looking forward to trying this establishment's food as it had many great reviews! Unfortunately, the service I received today was well below the quality I expected. I wanted to like this place but it was just decent to me. My bf and I came on a Sunday afternoon, with a bit of a wait but not too bad. I ordered The chicken breast entree. It comes with cornbread and two sides and I opted for the mac & cheese and cole slaw. The first thing I'm going to comment on is the service. This is a diner-type restaurant and it was about 10:45pm or so when I stopped in. I sat at the counter since I was flying solo and the waitress, Amber, greeted me right away in a very pleasant tone. She explained the menu to me and went through the pages as to what was what on the pages. That rarely happens at diners. Anyway, I ended up kind of making up my own combo and it was great! So I ordered salmon croquettes, grits, eggs with cheese and an English muffin. I mean, I'm from the South (I think I write that in most of my reviews, but in case you didn't know) and to find salmon croquettes AND grtis on the menu is almost unheard of over here. That's actually what sold me on coming here in the first place; someone mentioned in one of the reviews that they had grits. That's all I needed to read. First, the salmon croquettes (2) were big and moist. They weren't some itty bitty, skimpy croquettes. They were a great size, just like I make at home. They were soft and flavorful, but I wish they had been fried slightly harder as I like a slight outer crunch to mine. I didn't know how they would be prepared, so I didn't mention it, but next time I'll make mention of it since it's just a personal preference. The grits were very good as well. They were creamy and not burnt (which is important). The eggs were made with good ol' processed American cheese, just like I like it. I didn't request a specific cheese and I'm glad because although I love different cheeses, for some reason, American cheese always taste great in eggs to me. If you didn't look out the window, you'd think you were in a movie. In fact, if you didn't look out the window, you wouldn't know, you wouldn't know if you were in the 1960's or in 2014. No frills- just a lotta comfort- the smells of fresh breakfast food, and a bunch of staff shouting friendly orders at eachother. You wanna show someone grits? This is a proper soul food diner. SERVICE: 5 stars Speaking of shouting staff- no, they're not yelling, they're just communicating casually, making sure people are taken care of. We seated ourselves at the bar, rather than requesting a booth, as I like to toss my student into the action, forcing her to interact with the staff and improve her engrish. Our order was taken right away and everyone was super friendly. I'm pretty sure we were helped by anyone and everyone who walked by, rather than the normal designated-to-one-area waiter. I was coming from San Pedro, with a friend from Orange county, to meet another friend in the Culver City area. We all wanted breakfast/brunch food. This place had the best reviews. I now understand why. What an experience! I'm so glad that I used Yelp to find this place. You'd probably pass it otherwise! It's located in a small strip mall and doesn't really stand out except for the large amount of people waiting outside. Parking blows (small lot), but there's plenty of street parking in the residential areas. We got here at about noon, and there were a lot of people already. I asked the hostess when the best time to come would be, and she recommended 2 pm (they close at 5 pm). I'll keep that in mind for future visits! The wait really wasn't that long, though....20 minutes? And I had good company. The hostess came out and handed customers menus, which was a nice touch. I was ready to EAT when I got inside. I ordered the Rambo Combo, which had a waffle (with cinnamon), buttery grits, four slices of thick-cut bacon, and eggs (which I gave to my friend). My friend went with a pancake combo. My other friend got the French toast combo, and then we all split sides of black-eyed peas (my first time), mac n cheese, and fried chicken drumettes. Holy shit, you guys, this food is AMAZING. So much butter on everything = LOVE. I would venture to say that the fried chicken rivaled Roscoe's, although Roscoe's waffles are much tastier. The black-eyed peas were delightful. The mac n cheese tasted like I had died and gone to heaven. But the absolute favorite? BUTTERY GRITS. I seriously could have eaten an entire bowl of that stuff. I don't know what they do to make it so good (maybe the 4 lbs. of butter), but it was phenomenal. Seriously, you must try it. I was way too stuffed, but my friends split a peach cobbler for dessert, and that thing looked really yummy, too. The heat was just oozing out of it with each bite. Om nom nom. The staff is super nice and very attentive. I never once had to ask for a refill of coffee, water, etc. We only got up to leave once we noticed we were getting stink-eyes from customers waiting to be seated (hate that). I decided to try The Serving Spoon for breakfast and I was highly disappointed. I paid 20 dollars for two thin salmon croquettes with no seasoning, running grits drowning in liquid butter (with no seasoning) and scrambled eggs. I didn't receive my toast which was suppose to come with the order. I've been waiting a long time to try this place and it was an epic fail. I would have done better going to McDonald's. read more
