Came to to dinner with my linesisters. Not only did we have a good time catching up but we had a great dinner. I had the GRILLED SALMON with garlic mashed potatoes, fried brussels sprouts and maple bourbon glaze. I accompanied my meal with a glass of Cabernet. We went to Sheldon Inn Restaurant & Bar on a Saturday night, and honestly, this started off as one of those "let's just try our luck" kind of dinners. We had checked online and even called and were told no tables, but figured maybe we could grab a spot at the bar. When we walked in, I thought, " What's the harm in asking"...and somehow a table for two had just opened up. One of those meant-to-be moments. I started with a martini, which was great, and I ordered the macadamia crusted halibut special with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The fish itself was really good. The potatoes needed a little help, though. I definitely wish I had asked for extra sauce and a little salt and pepper, but I did appreciate that they tasted homemade with those bigger chunks. We also got the French onion soup to start, and that was so good. It had little tips of filet in it, and honestly, that might have been my favorite part of the whole meal. My husband ordered the stuffed chicken, and this is where things kind of went sideways. The chicken was really dry, and then halfway through, he bit down on what looked like a cherry pit. Definitely not something you expect, and kind of a mood killer. We called the waiter over, and they were very apologetic, and the service the entire night really was great. But between the dry chicken and that surprise, we were kind of done at that point. We were planning on dessert, but just didn't even feel like it anymore. That said, we've been here before and have had really great meals, which is why I wouldn't write it off. The service was great, everything was clean, and it still has that nice, classic feel. Also, a side note, I used the restroom before we left, and I have to say, as a mom, seeing an actual changing station with drawers and supplies made me so happy. I remember those flimsy fold down tables and being nervous using them, so this felt like such a thoughtful touch. They even had a bidet, which I tried to check out, but it wasn't working. Helpful tip: Get the French onion soup, and if your dish comes with a sauce...ask for extra. Not a perfect night, but enough good here that we'd come back again. read more

I am well overdue for this updated review but here I am nearly a month and a half later. My husband and I came here for Valentine's Day even though I mentioned to him my prior and only experience was not the greatest. What convinced me was their Valentine's menu and let me say it sure didn't disappoint! Our server was Mia who was an absolute pleasure to have. She was attentive, kind, and very informative of the menu when we were indecisive. We were seated in their speakeasy, completely separate from the main restaurant, which I enjoyed much more. (less hustle and bustle) The ambiance was more romantic and intimate. I chose the Grilled Salmon served with garlic mash potatoes, fried brussels sprouts, and maple bourbon glaze. This was 15/10! Everything was perfection. The salmon wasn't too wet or dry, brussels were lightly crispy and not bitter like I've had at other places, garlic mash was well-seasoned and so creamy and fluffy. That glaze was everything that pulled the dish together! The maple glaze wasn't too sweet and had a nice subtle flavor. If they ever have this on their regular menu I'd order in a heartbeat. My husband got their North Atlantic Lobster Tail. They did not skimp on the lobster at all!!! His plate was served with bistro rice, broccolini, and butter to drown the lobster in of course. Rice was fluffy but could've used a bit more seasoning and broccolini was cooked well while still having a bit of a bite to it. We ended the evening with their Pot de Crème served with hazelnuts, strawberries, and whipped cream. This was another delicious bite! Yes, it is chocolate so you would expect something super decadent and overly sweet. That was not the case... It had been so long ago that it was time to revisit for dinner. They had a dinner special we took advantage of back a few months ago. I'm sorry I waited so long to write a review as it was well worth our time but life happens! It was like 2 for 85 dollars. I think my wife got the special through her email but don't quote me on that bc they didn't advertise it on their menu. We had to let our waiter know that we knew about this special btw. We ordered the fried brussel sprouts, caesar salad, Portuguese bean soup, braised shortribs & my wife had her 6 oz lobster which was cooked to perfection! They also brought us bread with butter. We were way too full by the time it was dessert despite it sitting adjacent to us! What a treat bc everything tasted delicious! Wow we are surely ready to return:-))) This restaurant's ambiance was swanky & perfect for special occasions! We had a great experience for dinner at Sheldon Inn. There's plenty of parking. We're welcomed and seated promptly. Every server that interacted with our table was very nice and welcoming. They continued to check on us throughout and they even offered to take a picture for us. We were given a complementary photo which was a very nice surprise. The food was brought out promptly. Everything that we tried was amazing. The bread and butter was so good. They offered us more bread without hesitation. The brussel sprouts, and the calamari are a must for appetizers. I recently celebrated my birthday here and can highly recommend it for food, ambiance and events. As I assumed it would be a warm evening i reserved a table for 10 outdoors. Of course a few people weren't able to make it so it ended up being 7 of us. I had dropped off my cake , flowers, candles balloons and brought two bottles of champagne for corkage . Everything looked lovely when we arrived however I wish they had a table cloth on the black iron table. The service was polite and professional and the hostess was super sweet. Most importantly the food was delicious and everyone seemed pleased with their food. I have a tough crowd to please. My chimicurri flank steak was delicious. Wow! The amount of times I have driven past this gem on Grant Line... countless. Came here to celebrate my parent's 30th anniversary. They had their names on a printed menu for our table to recognize their anniversary, took a complementary picture and put it in a cute frame. Nice touch! More of a fancier vibe (they give you warm hand towels at the end of your dinner). The bar area is more causal for sure. Definitely a spot to come if you're celebrating a special occasion. Service was really great overall. Food was amazing. We got the ribeye, the salmon, and the fried chicken (not on the regular menu it's the Tuesday special), calamari to start, and finished with a slice of cheesecake. I had a lovely Sunday Brunch here today with an old friend. Make sure to have a reservation because when we arrived the ladies in line in front of us did not have one and were ultimately sent to the bar to eat. Although all the tables were full, the ambiance was still classy, calm and quiet and my friend and I were able to catch up with no problem. The decor here is lovely and the seating was comfortable. We had some mimosas to start and I ordered the omlette florentine while my friend had the french toast and fried chicken. Of course when the food arrived we shared, as good friends do. The chicken was excellent and everything else was good as well. We asked for a few modifications and everything came out exactly as we requested. I think the best thing of all here is the service. January birthday dinner was so memorable because the food, and service at Sheldon Inn is always top notch. There were four of us seated in a cozy booth for a 7pm dinner reservation. We ordered our drinks and read over the menu. Selections made! Dinner consisted of two double cut pork chops, a filet mignon and salmon. We started with two prawn appetizers and two of us ordered the Portuguese bean soup. Their bread is outstanding, although I don't know if it's baked on premises. It is served warm and has a nice, crispy crust with pillowy, air pockets inside - just need the butter to be a bit softer. The prawn apps came 2/order and were served with buttered toasts and arrived in a tasty broth; they were a wee bit overcooked bc they were tough when attempting to cut, but the broth flavor mostly saved the dish. The bean soup was okay; I envisioned a different soup altogether - a Portuguese kale soup I've had elsewhere and adore. Still it was tasty, but a simple bean soup I can easily replicate at home. We were told our entrees were running a bit behind, but once delivered - the quiet that took over the table told me the entrees were tasty and cooked perfectly. This aspect almost makes up for the overcooked prawns. Birthday cobbler covered in whipped cream was shared by the 4 of us, and topped off our meals perfectly, and altho the app we chose left us wanting, the overall experience was very good. Rest assured this gal will keep going back. Do note, if you advise during reservations that you'll be celebrating a special event, they will snap a photo keepsake and will also personalize a menu for your table. Came here with my family, we sat outside and it was slightly hot, not too bad as they had misters. It was just before sunset and the view was gorgeous. The mosquitoes were unforgiving and so were the flies. The service was subpar. As we ordered there were things forgotten and reminded of more than once. For starters we got crab cakes -- nothing great, I've had better. My father and I ordered prime rib, my son ordered salmon and my sister had gotten the ribeye steak. I asked for au jus as it seemed like there had not been any dressing on the prime rib. The waitress asked if the au jus on my prime rib wasn't enough, so I was surprised there was any at all. When she came back with the au jus, the flavor was not what I expected. Not bad but not great. My father agreed. My son did not like the salmon, but my sister said the steak wasn't bad at all. There was nothing that really amazed us. My father did not like the service and although I did not think it was that bad overall, we will most likely not be coming back. My sister had also left her purse there outside, the next day the restaurant was closed and she still found it outside hanging on the chair. read more

Made Reservations for a New Year's Eve dinner and was NOT disappointed!! The atmosphere was amazing as was the energy of our server Mia and staff. They were quick, friendly, and seemed happy to see us. We were seated on the second floor which we did ask for and it was very clean and welcoming. They had a 3 course dinner with some great options. The food tasted Delicious but one side really stood out. This was the Broccolini. I'm not a huge broccoli fan but this was so good! Incredible place to celebrate with friends! We had 7:15pm reservation. Seated in the patio. Despite day temp being 97 degrees, it was the perfect setting as sun set and slight breeze came in. You can bring your own wine, corkage $25. The waitress suggested the fried Brussels sprouts appetizer. It was delicious, nice and crispy. One of our friends doesn't usually like Brussels sprouts, but enjoyed this dish. Next we split the heirloom tomatoes salad with baby basil and balsamic reduction. Hard to not choose heirloom tomatoes in the summer. Two of my friends order the special, filet mignon skewers. Two 3oz skewers with mashed potatoes and asparagus. One substituted green beens instead. I had the Nimon Ranch double cut pork chop. It was tender and juicy. Highly recommend. The other entree was beef stroganoff. Noodles had the perfect texture. After dinner, instead of a dessert menu, a beautiful tray of desserts was presented. Love the presentation. Besides the personalized menus, a young lady also came by to take a group picture and printed three copies for each of the birthday guests. So it has been over four years since my last review and I wanted to provide an update. To be up front, I would consider myself to be a regular at Sheldon Inn so that may bias my opinion a bit. With that said, I'm going to be as honest as I can be about my experiences. When I started going to Sheldon Inn, it had a different vibe about it than I was previously used to, and I wasn't sure if it was going to be a place I'd enjoy hanging out at. However, what I have found after four plus years of going there is that it an all around great place, and here's why I feel that way. 1. Staff: This is where Sheldon Inn in my opinion is different than any other bar/restaurant I've been to. I have found pretty much every single person who works there, past or present, to have been really amazing people. I am treated far better than I have ever deserved, and even after having made some mistakes in judgement there being hitched to a barstool maybe a little too long, I have always been made to feel welcome, appreciated, and respected. Aron, who has been the manager since my first time there is a great guy. I have frequented other restaurants just as much as Sheldon, but never have I been made to feel more appreciated. The bartenders, such as Mia, John, Ryan, and James are all great. Attentive, funny, and dedicated to their craft. I'm often in awe of the juggling and running they need to do, because I certainly couldn't do what they do. The wait staff is always approachable, and friendly towards me. I have become friends with many of the employees there, and that is such a departure from other places I've been that I felt it's worth mentioning. To me, this is the thing that sets Sheldon apart. Even the owners are always cordial towards me, not that I feel I deserve it. 2. Ambiance: I think Sheldon offers a good mix of dining or as of recently, happy hour experiences. You can sit inside for a more formal setting, hang out in the bar area (bar top and tables) for a more casual night, you can sit outside on the patio next to a very nice venue, enjoy live concerts/events, or sit upstairs in a more "club" type atmosphere. They offer a lot of variety, and I think many people who have not been there much don't realize that. If I had a critique, I wish they had a bit more bar top space since that always seems to be jam packed. I must also commend the other patrons - lots of great people go there. I also commend the owners for taking such great care of not only the building, but the entire property. It's truly a very nice place to be, and from my first visit to today, I'm always seeing improvements across the board. I can say that's often not the case with other restaurants, and I commend their dedication to not only preserving such a staple of the community, but for continuing to make it better. It's an old historic building, but it's extremely well maintained. 3. Food/Drinks: Let's face it, we're all going out to a bar/restaurant to indulge a bit, enjoy an evening with friends, relax with a nice cocktail, or celebrate an event. I have found the food at Sheldon to largely be good. The drinks are always great, and the service that comes along with everything for me, has always been top notch. When I say top notch, I mean like it would be hard for any place to be better than what I've experienced. They also have an ever-evolving wine selection, and unfortunately for my wallet, I've become quite a wine snob because of this place. If I had some constructive feedback, it would be this. For us regulars, I do wish there was a bit more variety on the menu, and a little less focus on seafood and steak specials. A nice chicken dish (besides fried) or something like a chicken club sandwich would go a long way for me, and while there's an occasional special that hits the mark, not being a seafood guy, or someone who wants to eat red meat all the time, I can struggle sometimes to find something for a dinner entree. That's not their fault, it's mine, because I'm there too often. :) When it comes to happy hour and apps, I have found their current September 2025 menu to be great. The shishito peppers are amazing. The chicken satay is always very tasty. I really enjoy the seasonal heirloom salad - super fresh tasting and oozes quality. 4. Conclusion: Is Shelson Inn the only place I frequent? No, it is not, but it is by far the #1 on my list of places in the Elk Grove area. It has the perfect combination for me, and based on how many other regulars I see there, I know I am not alone. The ironic thing is, I drove by this place for many, many years, and never tried it until I had a reason to one day. After that, I was hooked. Many thanks to everyone there who makes my every visit there, a memorable one. If you're on the fence, please try it, you might just like it! I've seen many first timers there become frequent fliers, and I truly believe in supporting local businesses over big commercial chains. read more

First off, this place was highly recommended for their lemon drops so I was all in. They were fantastic! They use their own infused vodka and it was so smooth and the perfect amount of tart&sweet. The food was seasoned perfectly. I got the lobster and it was cooked to perfection perfectly seasoned. You almost didn't even need to use lemon. The service was fantastic. We got our food within 15 minutes and our waiter was super friendly and very attentive.. The ambience was perfect. A small place, but it is cozy but lively. Everybody was having a great time enjoying their food lots of laughter and really simple decor. We have been to Sheldon in several times now and it is always amazing. This time was to celebrate a 75th birthday and the little details that Sheldon Inn will include are so wonderful. They actually print up personalized menus for the group. Not individual menus, but the title block is changed to wish a Happy Birthday or anniversary. Little things that make it special. As for the service, they are great!!! The bartenders, the wait staff, everyone is "there to take care of you" and it shows in the way they do everything. And finally the food!!! EXTRAORDINARY!!! I had known of Sheldon Inn for a while, but never tried it till tonight. The star of the show tonight was the fried calamari with zucchini. The calamari was lightly fried, seasoned well, and you get a pretty good sized portion. I'm glad they used real squid and not cuttlefish, and you can taste the difference. The gem salad was the second star. The candied bacon, dressing, and onions all worked in harmony. For entrees, we got the rib eye and pork chop. Rib eye was fine, nothing really special. I preferred the mashed potatoes over the fingerlings that came with the steak. The pork chop was decent. The sauce was good and not dry. I feel like the seasoning doesn't really penetrate the food. They were professional and totally understanding of the situation. I greatly appreciate the hands on approach and immediate follow-up.
