I came here two times and got the same exact roll which was the firemen, the first time was for dinner and it was delicious and the second time for lunch during the EG restaurant week . Unfortunately the second time was pretty disappointing as the leeks weren't crispy/were more soggy and my bf agreed that they over seared the tuna this time which took away the "seafood" taste i love and prefer in raw sushi. I do feel like this place caters to a more "americanized" palate due to the sauciness and even the rolls with raw seafood having some kind of fried or temura component which isn't my normal preference. I probably would only come back for dinner for the vibes/atmosphere if I happen to be in the area as it is in a very random out of the way place in EG

Came to Umar Bar & Grill with a group of six for sushi, and we had a really enjoyable time. We ordered a wide variety of sushi rolls, and it was fun sharing different flavors across the table. The rolls were beautifully presented, fresh, and creative, with generous portions. We also enjoyed hot sake, which paired perfectly with the sushi and added to the relaxed, lively atmosphere. It's a great spot for groups looking to unwind, eat well, and enjoy good conversation. Service was friendly and the food came out steadily, though a few dishes took a bit longer than expected, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, a solid choice for sushi with friends, and I'd definitely come back again.

This is now one of my go to spots while in Elk Grove! The restaurant has such a clean, welcoming vibe from the moment we walked in. The staff was super friendly and attentive, making the whole experience feel easy and comfortable. And the food? Incredible. Every roll was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully made. The Hot Mama, Sheldon, and Dragon Roll were hands-down the favorites. Each one packed with the perfect balance of spice, texture, and freshness. Honestly some of the best sushi rolls I've had in a long time. The poke salad is also a must try! If you're looking for great service, a clean environment, and sushi that hits every single time, Umai is absolutely the place to go. Highly recommend!

We had a reservation for 9 for lunch today. Service was very good. We all enjoyed our food. Plenty of parking. We will be back.

Decided to come here for dinner with our party of 5 after the event. Came here to eat a few times before but thought I'd make a review after the 3rd try. It's seriously always a good time here whether you choose to sit indoor or outdoors. Love that they always have music and tv sports going. My sister ordered some mixed drinks (good amount of alcohol) and we ordered some rolls. The special roll and seafood pasta was the highlight of the night. Waiters and waitresses are pleasant everytime. The decor is gorgeous too and has a chill vibe here. Ppl tend to stay and drink which imo is nice to see. Staff, food portion and quality is superb and has me coming back.

Stumbled on this place while driving down Grant Line and what a hidden gem! Rustic ranch vibe outside, classy and cozy inside with a gorgeous wine rack. The rolls were huge and flavorful, amaebi was fresh and big, and calamari was perfectly crunchy. Loved sitting outside. It was quiet and relaxing. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Definitely coming back to try more!

Fantastic lunch on their beautiful patio, enjoying a nice summer afternoon. Umai delivers.

It's been 7 years since I've updated my review of Umai and while I still love this place a few things have changed. Service wasn't as prompt as it's normally been. We had to get our own to go boxes, Sprite was served but out of syrup so it was just carbonated water, our soy sauce was out and we had to ask the sushi chef for some because our server was MIA, we asked for mushrooms on the side for the ramen and never got them. Small things, but they add up. BBQ albacore is my families favorite and the pieces here have become so small but still the same price if not a tad more. It's almost like they cut the original sized pieces in half and those small pieces are now the standard size. All the rolls were delicious though, with the exception of the rainbow roll which was a bit underwhelming. I still love Umai, and will continue to support but it's those small changes that changed our minds from always coming here when we want sushi so venturing out to try other places.

What's not to love, the food, the staff and ambiance are all lovely. I've been coming here for a few years and it's become home to many celebrations for our family. Our favorite rolls are Spicy DJ, Wildhawk, Hot Momma. Other faves- Tempura green beans, edamame, teriyaki chicken, cheesecake (yum yum) and molten chocolate cake. The consistency keeps us coming back, cleanliness, staff and food all are pretty exceptional

I come here with my family all the time. The food is absolutely amazing especially the bacon fried rice. The staff is always so kind & the overall a restaurant itself is very nice & always clean. Do keep in mind the wait times because if you'd like to dine in with a with a lot of people, I would recommend a having a reservation. This is a very popular place!

Siblings and I were able to take our mom out here for a lunch some months back and were happy to find that the spot was also dog friendly (AKA we were able to bring our dog with us!). We sat outside in the patio area and were happily tended to by staff. Our server was patient and friendly, helping not only us get settled but also our pup. We ordered the following: - Crispy Calamari: 5/5 this was our favorite for sure! Nice, seasoned, and crisp. We loved the sauce that accompanied it... also got a second order because it was delicious. - Assorted vegetable tempura: 3.5/5 decent and a good amount provided. All agreed that the batter could be thicker for being fried, but nevertheless, it was tasty! - Wilton Roll: 3/5 decent but wasn't too impressed. Flavor was there though. - Spicy DJ: 4/5 we liked this one for sure! Flavor and texture balanced out. We like our food with a little zing to it, and that's what was done. - Katsu: 3.5/5 flavorful and filling! Definitely would return again to try other rolls and dishes. We really appreciate the possibility of having our dog with us while going out for a meal like this so that's a huge plus!

Umai Bar & Grill - Elk Grove ThursDate Night vibes at Umai Bar & Grill off Grant Line! We LOVE Japanese food and wanted to branch out from our usual go-to spot. This place is lively, fun, and has such a cool atmosphere out in the sticks Here's what we ordered: Agadeshi Tofu Naruto Roll Rainbow Roll Rancher Roll Uni Nigiri Tempura Green Tea Ice Cream And instead of sake, we paired it all with a chilled glass of Rombauer Chardonnay--perfect choice! We already made a pact to try EVERYTHING on the menu, just like we did at our other favorite spot in Fremont. If you're craving fresh sushi, creative rolls, and a fun night out--Umai Bar & Grill is definitely worth checking out! #ThursDateNight #SushiLovers #ElkGroveEats #JapaneseFoodie #FoodieAdventures #SupportLocalEats #SushiTime #SakeSwap #CaliforniaFoodies

Umai is one of our absolute favorite sushi spots that our family and friends have enjoyed ever since they have opened! Food is always so delicious, fish is so fresh and presentation is amazing! We always enjoy every time we dine in or order for take out! It does get pretty busy as it's a super popular place so expect to have some wait times on peak dining hours. The vibe is fun and enjoyable and the venue has expanded to outdoor seating as well! You definitely have to try Umai if you haven't already!

With the addition of California roll, which is ok. Shioyaki sauce is good, that hint of spice and its combination with citrus is good for me. Tempura sauce is good too. Expect to wait an hour for your food after you have been seated. We arrived close to opening at noon on a Sunday and did not leave until 2pm which is when they close for lunch. We sat at the back right side of the restaurant which is where the AC is blasting so it can get very cold when seated here. We started with the Ika Maruyaki (Teriyaki grilled squid) and for $28 this was a miss. No tentacles were served and the squid did not taste very fresh. It's really not worth the price point and I don't recommend it. The next appetizer was the toro roll and I think I need to order more sushi next time. The fish was incredibly fresh with a perfect amount of rice and high quality nori. I ordered the tempura udon - you really can't go wrong with the tempura here. It has a crisply light batter that is not too thick or oily. My husband got the tonkatsu curry and this always hits. The curry is so aromatic with the warm spices and the katsu is perfectly battered and cooked.

I tried their sukiyaki set, both wagyu and seafood. I wish they had given some instructions on the approach or order I should eat the sets of food. It was a little chaotic trying to figure out how I could submerge all the ingredients in the broth so they would cook evenly. The tempura is perfectly crispy, but the rice was a little brittle and got dried really fast. The texture was more like Vietnamese broken rice, and it caught me off guard because when I tried their sushi a while ago, they used very high-quality rice. As is typical with sukiyaki, the broth becomes very flavorful at the end, absorbing all the flavors from high-quality ingredients, but my udon got a little dry while waiting. Since I tried both set, the wagyu sukiyaki broth became a little too sweet at the end. My favorite is definitely the seafood sukiyaki broth. Would I try these pricy sukiyaki again? Probably not. Would I go back to Azayaka again? 100%. This would not discourage me from going back there any amount.

We didn't say anything because we wanted to be respectful to the chefs and didn't want to make a scene. Our takeout experiences haven't been much better. On one order, they forgot an entire container that was part of our meal, so we had to drive back to get it. They called to let us know they had forgotten it but also told us we needed to arrive within 10 minutes because they were closing. They also regularly forget the spicy mayo on takeout orders, even though they charge extra for it, while it's provided at no extra cost when dining in. Unfortunately, I had very poor cell service inside the restaurant, so I couldn't even load the menu properly. The waiter also took forever to come back around, and we were already being rushed, so it wasn't like we even had the chance to ask for a paper menu. The customer service was terrible. Our waiter never asked if it was our first time or took the time to explain how the menu worked. He barely spoke to us, dropped food off with an attitude, and made us feel like he was trying to rush us out the entire time. We arrived at 9:23 p.m. If the restaurant was already preparing to close or didn't want to seat us, they could have simply told us that last call had already happened. Instead, they seated us, rushed us through our meal, took our money, and then overcharged us because nothing was properly explained. Overall, the lack of communication, poor customer service, and confusing ordering process completely ruined what should have been an enjoyable first visit.
