The Sushi is pretty good and the service is usually pretty decent. The last time we went our waiter was Alex Y., he's nice enough, however he's not a decent waiter at all. Once he takes your order he seems to ignore you. I wanted to get his attention to bring us our drinks and he'd pass by our table, talk to people and just ignore us. By the time the drinks came, my beer wasn't even cold and there was no head. It took 20 minutes for the drinks and 25 minutes for the Sushi. So next time we'll order Sushi but skip the drinks or go to the bar "before" our reservation and get the drinks. If the beer is freshly poured and doesn't have a head, that means they're not rinsing their glasses enough, if there's a hint of soap, the beer won't have a head. read more

I came here two times and got the same exact roll which was the firemen, the first time was for dinner and it was delicious and the second time for lunch during the EG restaurant week . Unfortunately the second time was pretty disappointing as the leeks weren't crispy/were more soggy and my bf agreed that they over seared the tuna this time which took away the "seafood" taste i love and prefer in raw sushi. I do feel like this place caters to a more "americanized" palate due to the sauciness and even the rolls with raw seafood having some kind of fried or temura component which isn't my normal preference. Decided to come here for dinner with our party of 5 after the event. Came here to eat a few times before but thought I'd make a review after the 3rd try. It's seriously always a good time here whether you choose to sit indoor or outdoors. Love that they always have music and tv sports going. My sister ordered some mixed drinks (good amount of alcohol) and we ordered some rolls. The special roll and seafood pasta was the highlight of the night. I was there for a birthday dinner, 14 of us in all. The only reason why I don't have a five-star review is because of the staff having slight problems handling a reservation for a party of that size. If you can do it, great, if you can't, please don't try to fake it. Otherwise, the fish I had was probably the freshest in town, as i and two other people in our party had the chirashi. The fish selection was excellent. A lot of places try to give people egg, and a couple of other types of fillers for their chirashi. Not this place.! They food was top tier in town. Stumbled on this place while driving down Grant Line and what a hidden gem! Rustic ranch vibe outside, classy and cozy inside with a gorgeous wine rack. It's been 7 years since I've updated my review of Umai and while I still love this place a few things have changed. Service wasn't as prompt as it's normally been. We had to get our own to go boxes, Sprite was served but out of syrup so it was just carbonated water, our soy sauce was out and we had to ask the sushi chef for some because our server was MIA, we asked for mushrooms on the side for the ramen and never got them. Small things, but they add up. BBQ albacore is my families favorite and the pieces here have become so small but still the same price if not a tad more. It's almost like they cut the original sized pieces in half and those small pieces are now the standard size. All the rolls were delicious though, with the exception of the rainbow roll which was a bit underwhelming. I still love Umai, and will continue to support but it's those small changes that changed our minds from always coming here when we want sushi so venturing out to try other places. read more

I've been here a few times since they've opened and after my most recent experience I feel like I need to come more often. I made a reservation for a family birthday lunch and they were super helpful and accommodating. The food was really fresh and flavorful. I got a cucumber seafood salad that was loaded with different seafood proteins and the rolls my family got were excellent. Siblings and I were able to take our mom out here for a lunch some months back and were happy to find that the spot was also dog friendly (AKA we were able to bring our dog with us!). We sat outside in the patio area and were happily tended to by staff. Our server was patient and friendly, helping not only us get settled but also our pup. Just moved to the area and decided on a quick decision to have sushi. Called and placed an order for pick up. The merchant I spoke with over the phone was great, very friendly and went over menu items with me. I ended up ordering platter A to go. When making a phone over, I believe once it's over a certain amount you have to pay over the phone. It's pretty standard in my book. The merchant stated it would take 30-35 minutes and a text would be sent once it was ready. I had time to pick up smoothies, and within 20 minutes I received a text. I came in and the place was clean and looked like rush just finished. There was outdoor seating as well and looked to have heaters once it gets old and strong lighting for the evening. I can't wait to come in and have a sit down meal here. Once I picked up my order and got home I was very happy with my order. We're a family of 4 at home and it kept us full for a good part of the day. They plated the platter really nicely and for the price I was happy. I came here on a Sunday night and it was very busy, but the wait time went by fast, max 10-15 mins. The staff were sort of running all around and checking on their tables. The food came out at a good pace. We started with the crispy calamari, which came out perfectly fried and delicious. They topped it with jalapeños, onions, and togarashi, and paired it with a delicious sauce and lemon. I would HIGHLY recommend this starter!!! We tried 2 of their house rolls, the hot mama, both with and without avocado, and another roll I can't recall (will attach photos). The hot mama had a very heavy tuna flavor which overwhelmed the roll after a few pieces, but I wholeheartedly enjoyed the flavor and the stunning presentation of the roll. Umai is great. Beautiful vibes, beautiful decor, huge food portions. It's a great place for larger groups or date night. There is a great selection of meals from the kitchen or something from the sushi bar. Even their cocktails are amazing. I don't think I have ever had to deal with a wait here and we go pretty frequent. The staff is always very accommodating but if you're lucky, you'll get a seat at the bar, enjoy some food, and build a report with the bartenders. This little gem of a sushi place is so near me!! Who knew? We came on the weekend. Its a good size with lots of staff and we were quickly seated. We started with the calamari that came out quick and crisp with a tangy dipping suace. Next were the oysters these were a tad disappointing the flavor was ok but really tiny. Next we I had the spicy tuna hand roll. Pretty good. With 2 others rolls. We had the DJ roll that was way too much red onion on top but overall good. The other rolls were the Umai roll and the Bradshaw see them pictured and was more to my liking. Food for me was a 4.5 star but rounding up for great service and perfect timing. Always had water. The drinks were well priced and well made. Lots of wine and beer options too. Most definitely we would come back to try more things. Seating inside or out with plenty of parking. The Restaurant was very inviting for a mid afternoon date. The waitress was prompt, attentive, and very cordial. The food was twice as good as we expected being as the place is slightly rural. It is very obvious the chef is trained , the staff is exceptionally knowledgeable, and the bar is somewhere anyone would want to end their day . I don't write a lot of reviews but I have to share this experience I had at Umai. Our family is a long time customer and we have ordered large amounts for birthday parties before as well. We haven't been visiting as much this year for personal reasons. My experience is from this past weekend. I called and ordered several things of which two were the grilled Hamachi. I have attached pictures so you can see the call times. I called at 7:46 pm, placed my order and hung up 3 minutes after. So I'm sure at about 7:49 pm the person who took the order on the phone sent it through to the kitchen. She told me the order will take 25 minutes. I called back at 7:56 pm to tell them that the person I ordered the Hamachi for doesn't want it so I want to take that out of the order. If you can see that was about 7 minutes after. The person I talked to said sure just hold on and let me notify the kitchen. When she came back on the line she said they can't because the fish is almost done. I told her I just placed the order five minutes ago or so and they told me it will take 25 minutes. All I wanted to do was to take out the two fish because I don't need that and it's only been a few minutes. At that point I asked to speak to the manager. Jen came on the line and I told her I called about five minutes ago and I needed to take just the two fish out and she said no you can't because the fish is basically almost ready or it's done. I said how is that possible when I just called to place the order. She said we are very slow and so they started the order right away. I said to her that the person who took the order told me it will take time and that's about 25 minutes. Jen said well we have a new policy that if it's been 10 minutes after they can't. I explained it wasn't that long. She didn't want to listen and didn't even care that we are a long time customer. At that point I told her if she can't understand and can't help me then cancel the whole order. Jen said if she cancels the whole order then we can no longer come to Umai. I told her it's fine go ahead. I don't care that she said I can no longer come there. If a long time customer calls within exactly 7 minutes to cancel a order and they get treated like this then I don't want to ever give my business to this type of restaurant. Jen said that they are extremely slow that's why the fish was almost ready. Honestly this makes me question the quality of food and how it's handled. How can I place an order and within 7 minutes part of it is almost ready. What bothered me the most was that I have been coming there for a long time and have given a lot of business; however, just one request and I get banned from the restaurant. All I wanted was to cancel two things. I just needed that help this one time but I guess with Jen you cannot do that. I guess it doesn't matter if you have been a customer or not they will drop you in a second if something is not convenient to them. read more

For drinks we both opted for the spicy jalapeno margs, which had a nice kick but could've been a bit more alcohol forward. They were a little watered down. We ordered the tuna tartare to start, followed by the Grantline, Special J, and Firemen rolls. Each roll was fantastic! It was amazing and very flavorful as the cutlet itself was juicy, and the breading did not overpower anything. The appetizers were very delicious and cooked very well.
