I am very surprised to see my review from 18 months ago, because I have had a lot of great meals here recently. They have taken away some of the things I really liked on the menu, including two I desperately them to bring back and would definitely give them 5 stars for if they did: -- entree salad with shrimp, fennel, and citrus...I used to love this salad and found it was one of the few healthy options on the menu. --SMITHWICH!!! (They used to charge $3; I'd gladly pay $5. It was so good. It is worth noting that they have very nice desserts, and the cookies are still great, but I loved the smithwich!) The pork chop dish was fan-freaking-tastic a couple weeks ago, even though I asked for the pork medium rare and either my waiter or the kitchen ignored me. Prices are fair and portion sizes are very good. Usually the service is very nice and capable, even if not the most refined, and the bartenders are a little scattered. Great atmosphere and design overall, but the subway tiles everywhere really reflect sounds, making it a very noisy place for a somewhat upscale dining experience. It was a bit of a wait for a table, but they'll text you when the table is almost ready. We got seated before the time we were given, which was nice. The service was great; the staff knowledgeable and attentive, but not overbearing. You're given still and sparkling water by default, and they keep bringing more bottles as needed. The food was the best part overall. I had the brick pressed chicken and it was juicy, well-cooked, and just the right portions. The garlic and whatever-it-was sauce was sublime, and linked the chicken well to the underlying mashed potatoes. My partner had grilled shrimp, and was also very satisfied with the preparation and portion. If you're in the area, this is a great place to go for a nice dinner. read more

Great server, interesting variety cocktails. The menu had awesome options and I simply couldn't decide. Our server was great and passed on some of her recommendations. I decided to get the fried chicken sandwich, which came with a moist fried chicken breast and a mountain of fries. The Mac n cheese was also excellent. Came here last week for dinner with some friends. My wife and I both got Pasta dishes that we thought were very good. The only problems with the Smith is that it is loud (which we knew going in), and the wait for the table was 40 minutes after our reservation. The Smith did make up for it by giving some free appitizers when we sat at the table. I think the Smith definitely deserves better than the 3.5 Yelp average. It is a 4 star dinner! read more

I had a rather limited experience here. We came for drinks and dessert. In our time there, the restaurant left an excellent impression. The service was super attentive and personable. The seating was all padded which made it very comfortable. And the beer selection had some great craft options. We had smores in a jar which featured a chocolate crust case topped with chocolate mouse and crushed graham crackers. There were a couple of crunch chocolate bars stuck into the jar along with roasted marshmallows. It was a very creative and tasteful dish. The layering developed a rich and luscious complexity which I certainly enjoyed. I'd certainly return here to try a more typical full dining experience considering how great our limited experience was. read more

I been to this Smith location a few times for business lunches and they do a very good job. We were seated right away (we had a reservation) and our server was very attentive throughout the meal. I had the burger which cam with cheese, bacon, a house sauce, etc. We also got mac and cheese for the table. The mac and cheese is off the chain. The burger was excellent, but the mac and cheese stole the show. The prices are a little on the high side, but once and a while is not a big deal and they deliver flawlessly on the food and the service. read more

Delicious!! Great food and atmosphere. Not inexpensive but the heavenly avocado toast made it worth it.

We made a reservation for Sunday lunch at 1pm, and we're helped right away. It looked very crowded and packed, but they were able to make a room for my 2 years old son who fell asleep in stroller. They helped bringing high chair right away once my little one woke up. We ordered avocado toast and Benedict Johny. They were all so tasty. I've been to a few brunch places so far and this one isn't bad. It's much bigger than It looks from the outside and offers a decent service. The menu has the typical egg variations, but also a few I haven't had too often. I had egg Benedict on waffles with creamed spinach. Interesting ... Waffles were a bit too "well done" and the spinach had an amazingly green colour (it was greener than green), but I applause the effort. I was searching for some amazing brunch places in Manhattan and came across The Smith (which I have bookmarked for the longest time). We came here on a Sunday, and the wait time was actually decent! I was expecting a super long wait. The wait staff sent me a text when the table was ready. The restaurant itself is spacious and had a great chatty atmosphere. The service was good and they didn't bother us too much when we decided to linger and chat after we finished our food. The beet batter string beans are the bomb.com, you need to try these! I personally had the potato waffles, it definitely needed some more salt but overall was delicious. Looking for a cute brunch spot to go to on the weekends? Definitely give this place a try. **Overall, I recommend to friends and will come back. The Smith is a great brunch spot. It's very spacious so good for a large group, but there is usually a long queue because it's so popular. The scones were amazing - the perfect mixture of sweet and salty with candied bacon. We ordered the pot pie and were blown away. My only complaint was the pie was not big enough. After a hard workout at the gym, this was the perfect way to reward myself. I came here for brunch and the first thing on the menu that caught my eye was the fried oyster sliders. Like The Smith in EV, the restaurants draws a pretty hip clientele. The interior is modern and has plenty of seating making it good for big groups. Love, love, love the Smith! We have been to both the Lincoln Center and Midtown locations. Both are equally excellent. The Smith is very popular and so we recommend making reservations. We love the Bloody Mary's here. They are spicy, which is what I love about them. We had an order of the doughnuts as a starter. They are served warm and are decent. My boo got the avocado toast, which he really loves. I had the mushroom omelette, which was decent. The potatoes were a bit on the salty side however. The candied bacon is always very tasty. We took a look around the dining room as other diners got their food. The brioche french toast looked excellent. The breakfast pot pie looked good too! We always enjoy coming to the Smith for brunch!! Service was very attentive. Food came out pretty quickly and hot. Our server gave us the free Bloody Mary's that came with certain entrees even though we were a little early for it (we had an 11:45 am reservation but the brunch special started at noon). read more

I've been to The Smith two times and I was satisfied both times. On my first visit, I had The Smith burger and it was arguably the best burger I ever had. The sauce in it was amazing! Not to mention, they serve the burger will an incredible amount of fries. The second time, I tried their mac n cheese and it was up there when it comes to best mac n cheeses I've had. I personally had better home made mac n cheese, but their mac n cheese is worth trying. The vibes in this place is awesome too. I would use this place for anything: dates, family lunch, solo dinner, or drinks because their bar seems really nice. Highly recommend and will most likely visit again! read more

My family and I had just arrived in NYC (from FL) and The Smith was the first place we went to. With a line out the door we knew it would be a good place to eat. There were no tables available (make reservations at any time during the day), but we found a fee seats at the community table and got served immediately. We had the french toast (looked better than tasted), the avocado toast and a skillet. We also split a toffee brioche bun. Spent a totalof about $80 for 3 ppl. Worth it though in my opinion. I LOVE this restaurant. I've been twice for dinner and once for brunch and it has never disappointed. The service is always great, the menu always changes slightly (but not in an annoying way). Their brunch options are superb and very unique - which I love! The atmosphere is fun. It has a bar vibe, but totally chill. It is a bit noisy every time I go, really for no reason (they don't play loud music, etc.) It's really just a busy place! It never bothers me. I was so excited when I came here. (There's 3 locations by the way) Everything was great. From the Macaroni & Cheese and I should stress it's at the top of my list for best Mac and cheese I've ever tasted! See my video for presentation proof lol. It wasn't just looks. It was really mouth watering. I will also add that the order of the macaroni is big enough for 2. Now I can eat a whole pizza pie by myself not even kidding so when the waiter said it can be shared I was like ehh, fine I'll trust him. Because I know that I could have finished it alone but It was pretty hefty! You definitely got what you paid for. My cousin had oysters, not really my thing. I had their gnocchi, also good. We also shared fries and had some drinks. Atmosphere was amazing. I will come back here! Oh my God I almost forgot about the dessert!!! The bread pudding was just out of this world tasty. The Smith is moderately priced and is a cool place to hang. give yourself an allotted amount of time because it does get crowded, it is 2nd avenue in midtown!! Drinks, i cant believe they have Pipeworks Blood of the Unicorn beer!! its an Irish red from Chicago. Try it out you cant go wrong. They have a great selection of there take on house special drinks and im sure youll find one you like. the food is an over average pub style food from burgers to mussels and are pretty darn tasty. the right side of the menu is daily specials from ribs to paella. Go Tuesday, the fish tacos are only 28 bucks, go great with a Pipeworks beer and they taste amazing. insider scoop, try the watermelon salad!! Feta, olives, lemon, oh yea and watermelon!! this baby rocked!! All in all a good "normal" dinner. read more

It was my second time at The Smith. Came here for brunch and ordered the $17 pancakes, whipped ricotta, toasted pecans, salted caramel sauce, minus the caramel sauce. When our food came out, my pancakes had no toppings whatsoever, no syrup or honey, no pecans, no ricotta. When the waiter came back I asked what happened and he went to check... my two friends had each of their meals and I waited around for him to check on mine as the food got colder. He came back with the pecans and syrup. I asked about the ricotta and blamed it on the chef for being "fairly new" (he later said the chef had been there six months. My friends began eating at this point and I waited while he checked on the ricotta. They were almost done by the time he got back. Waiter offered no apologies, just provided the ingredients haphazardly in additional plates. He didn't offer to comp a beverage or even apologize for the mixup, nor did he offer a new dish with all the toppings prepared on it by the chef. Pretty solid place, if you can overlook the unimaginative waitstaff. Came to the 2nd Ave Smith for a group dinner with a vegetarian friend with nut allergies, making us an already difficult group. I upped the ante by asking for modifications for taste, and the wheels fell off the bus. Ordered the brick-pressed chicken served with a side of smashed garlic potatoes. Then asked the waiter (a fatter Ryan Tedder with an aversion to ironed shirts) if the smashed potatoes (actually mashed potatoes) could be pan-fried into potato pancakes - no. Wouldn't even entertain taking the request to the cooks - simply, no. He then had the nerve to ask who'd ever even heard of a potato pancake. This was in New York! If the waiter had simply relayed the request (or had pretended to relay the request) to the back and gotten a no-go, I would have moved on. But intransigence was met with intransigence, and the issue was elevated to a much more reasonable manager. Eventually, I was served the breakfast potato waffle, topped with garlic butter. Win-win, as far as flavor and texture profiles were concerned. End-of-meal question became whether to tip the waiter a ton for being a pain, or to stiff him because he was an awful waiter. The chicken was fine. The short rib cavatelli was excellent - really a good choice. Shrimp tagliatelle sans nuts was just okay. read more
