The Smithy is a blast from the past. Go here if you want a good basic meal, good service, Vintage 1970's atmosphere. Remember salad bars? They have one. A cozy, casual steakhouse filled with rustic New England charm. The food here is simple and delicious, and you get a lot of it. The complimentary cheese board that kicks off your dinner is a nice touch (especially for a cheese lover like me), but be careful not to fill up too much on that or the salad bar, because whatever steak you order, it's going to be big and it's going to be good. And, of course, the baked potato isn't much smaller than the steak! If you still have any room left, the brownie sundae is a fun way to end your meal, though I recommend sharing it with a friend. As if this wasn't all enough, the service is always attentive and friendly, even on a very busy Saturday night. This isn't the upscale NYC steakhouse experience, but it doesn't have to be. The Smithy is a wonderful restaurant experience all its own, and one that I'm guessing is getting harder to find. It's the perfect place for a laid back birthday celebration or family visit. I debated on the three star in my mind finally settling on it. Seating is tight to the point where you can't help but listen to the conversation etc next to you. There are no reservations and we had a solid thirty minute wait which I wouldn't have minded except being cramped in a back corner room and waiting for a pre dinner cocktail. There are no local brews even though one of the best breweries in the state is one half mile away. The wine by the glass selection consists of four choices all mediocre. The bottle selection is weak as well and honestly overpriced. At the table service is quick friendly and professional. Several specials were available and described in detail. A nice addition is the choice of cheeses self serve an an adequate salad bar also self serve. The grill is within eyesight and the steaks were cooked perfectly and accompanied by a perfect baked potato. Go for the food it is worth it. The atmosphere well not so much. read more

Personally have never been disappointed; burgers and steaks cooked perfectly to your specification, MONSTER baked potatoes, cute but sufficient salad bar, and a cheese station! While it isn't elaborate (typically one of two types of cheese and a small assortment of crackers/bread sticks), it sets the stage for your meal. Chicken kabobs are juicy and flavorful. Went to the smithy a couple of weeks ago. I have been there before and really like the Smithy in general. Usually a wait but that's ok. What I did not like .... I ordered a chicken skewer dish and asked if the carb on the plate could be substituted with a vegetable... The waitress said no that's not possible you can bring the potato or rice home but if you want a vegetable on the side you have to pay the 5 dollar fee for the side of veggie. The cheese wheel and crackers are such an unique touch. Salad bar is small but has everything you need. Yummy bread too! I have had their steak(juicy), lamb chops(meaty) and shrimp...totally delicious. I always have their rice pilaf, its my go to rather than a potato. Desserts have been good but not as memorable. Wonderful food, wonderfull service, reasonable prices.............. We eat here every couple of months. Was here last Thursday night and it was packed. The cheese of the day on the carving block was a creamy Provolone that was great on the crackers and added to my salad. Love the old fashioned salad bar with all my favorites including 4 bean salad. They mix a proper cocktail at reasonable prices. Daughte and I had the demi striploins with rice pilaf and sauteed mushrooms. Prepared perfectly and just a big enough portion after the salad bar and chese and crackres. Wife had the lighter fare evening special, a chicken Dijon brochette that was moist and flavorful. Our waiter was attentive and charming. Only the dated ambience and rest rooms keep me from giving 5 stars. This is a much better meal and much better value than aqny of the chain steak places. BASIC. No bar to wait for a table, they stick you in a room with no possibility for an appetizer. If you order a glass of wine, ask for the half carafe because that's the better price, but they WON'T offer it. The girl who is the hostess is LITTLE HELP. There's a cheese and cracker bar but they don't tell you you can leave the "predinner" room to get some. Then we went to the actual table. The menu is the size of a playing card. About eight options. All come with rice pilaf or baked potato. That is literally it. The salad bar had about 9 ingredients. The bill came to almost $90, and then tip. Throughout I couldn't believe that we were paying for five app choices, 8 dinner options. NOT great. A throwback to bad times. read more

Went to the Smithy for the first time last week and found it a fantastic steakhouse. Though the menu is limited on the steak options the porter house I had was cooked perfect. The cheese block was interesting and the salad bar was a tad limited. Only the basics were available. Over all the staff was excellent and everything came out in a timely manner. Rudest hostess ever encountered. And on New Year's Eve. When the wife and I arrived early, as per a young and pleasant man who answered the phone on the 30th, the joint was packed. He had assured me the wait would be "no problem", and if we showed up early, seating would be " a piece of cake". What B S . When I squeezed my way up tho the hostess table, I tried to explaine. We were on a tight schedule. We were only two. We wouldn't linger. We would be out in a flash. Then the thick-waisted and heavely made up gal rudely ask me if " I knew what day this is?" Yeah, Sweatheart, I do know what today is. That's why my wife called in a favor to get her hair done. That's why I am standing here in my best suit. And I don't need some dim-wit to tell me what day it is. And as long as I am in a rant, your make up looks like it was slapped on by a stroke victim. The last time I ate at Smithy was two years ago. The food wasn't that impressive then. We had to send back a steak that was undercooked (should had been medium rare, it was rare) and the stuffed chicken breast was very dried, sent back. I wonder why is this place getting 4 stars??? Again, we decided to give this place another try after 2 years. It was a busy Saturday night, but we didn't wait too long before we got seated. We ordered the stuffed breaded mushrooms for appetizers and the salad bar. The salad bar was just ok...lots of the condiments, tomato cherries, sliced cucumbers, chopped red onions, etc. but the containers were almost empty, had to scrap the bottoms of the container. They should be more mindful to replenish these items to keep it looking fresh. The salad bar is right next to a very small grilling and cooking area...not much room for the chef and not much room for people lining up to the salad bar. Cheese board was very good, good hunk of mild (?) cheddar cheese and a large bowl of soft cheese spread with packaged bread sticks and crackers. Our waiter was good and attentive. When we got our appetizer, we told the waiter it was good but his replied, "thanks but people at the other tables were complaining about the food"...interesting. Our entrees came, steak (medium rare) with blue cheese sauce and a baked potato and ordered the stuffed chicken breast with rice again. The steak was cooked to order (medium rare) and the chicken breast was a little dried but good and the rice was ok. As for the plating of both entrees, very boring looking, lack any color...also the breaded stuffing on the chicken was the same stuffing as the stuffed mushrooms...so the chicken was not unique in any way and the rice was just rice, maybe a little sprinkle of chopped parsley would help to add some color to make the food look more appetizing. Considering you're going out to eat and it's really not be that hard to add some garnishes to make food look good, especially when people are paying for a meal. OK this is an old eating establishment in Monroe, I'm not originally from this area but I've met lots of nice locals since living in Monroe. This is what they have to said about Smithy, they "use to be" regulars but now they said the quality has gone down. Smithy does reminds me of Chuck's Steakhouse in Danbury...old and smell a little musty but much bigger than Smithy. This restaurant really need a major interior make-over. The interior at Smithy during dinner time is a bit dreary and dark. They had some old farm tools hanging but it's dark and not that noticeable...again it needed some contrast to make the inside look for comfortable. A great family restaurant when we're in the area. The Smithy never fails us ~ their food quality is consistently delicious. Every meal comes w the salad bar and the bread/cheese table so we never go away hungry. Matter of fact, we often take doggie bags home w us for meals the next day! This place felt like a joke, but not a funny one. The reviews on Yelp were so promising that my boyfriend and I decided to try it. They do not take reservations so we expected a wait on a Saturday night. We ended up waiting for over an hour. The hostess insisted that we could not have been waiting that long (strange response to a question about how much longer it would be) before just walking away. When we were finally seated, the waiter brought our drinks quickly (the only positive about the place). The celebrated 'cheese table' was a block of cheap monterey jack, and horseradish cheddar. I witnessed the patrons of the restaurant wiping their sleeves all over the cheese as they hacked their pieces of cheese onto their plates and chose their plastic baggies of breadsticks - the kind you get at delis when you buy a cup of soup. I went to the 'salad bar' which is included with the dinner entree. It consisted of a sad bowl of iceberg lettuce, black olives from a can, dried carrot shreds, and apparently they had run out of red onions because the container had sliced yellow onions in it. It's the kind of salad bar You'd expect to find at a Sizzler. Then our steaks came. I ordered the NY strip on the waiter's recommendation. After 40 minutes, our steaks came out. I ordered mine medium rare- it came out well done and completely unseasoned. The only thing that was even remotely tasty was the baked potato and that was only because it was swimming in butter and sour cream. I have never written a Yelp review but this place was such a joke that I couldn't let other people make the same mistake of believing the insanely positive reviews of this place. We spent a total of 3 hours there, and paid over $30 per entree and got an experience that was worse than eating at Sizzler (I've never eaten at Sizzler, but I'm sure the wait for a table is less than an hour, the food comes faster than 40 minutes later, and it doesn't cost over $100 for two people). No one in their right mind could give this place more than 1 star. Maybe 2 if that hostess was fired. read more

Reminds me of Chuck's Steakhouse in that it is still the same after many years in business. Not the best steak you will ever have but also not the same price you will pay at a top notch steakhouse. Two-thirds the quality for two-thirds to half the price. Not a bad trade off. Nice open atmosphere although a bit tight and dark. After many years of overlooking this longtime Monroe dining staple, my wife and I ventured for dinner there last Saturday night. We were glad that we did. The ambiance is very traditional- low lighting with lots of dark wood and a working fireplace. The interior is a bit tight but was laid out so that one has reasonable privacy. The menu is mostly dedicated to grilled steaks with some seafood and other dishes available. The Cowboy Steak special of that evening was a very tender cut of meat done just right. The onions and mushrooms on top perfected it. Shrimp Scampi fared a bit less well as the shrimp were on the small side (there were eight) but were nevertheless tasty. Dinners come with a piping hot baked potato in tin foil with large dollops of butter and sour cream "on the side" as requested. Specialty veggies and sides are available a la cart. The salad bar was somewhat limited but was freshly maintained and contained all of the essentials with classic Russian, French and Blue Cheese dressings. Plus they provide salad bowls, not just small salad plates-a nice touch. Several choices of cheese, crackers, and breads are also available. As you can ascertain, there is nothing "nouvelle" about The Smithy. But they did everything just about right at reasonable prices. As for the service- the young staff was enthusiastic and attentive. However, being that the facility caters to a traditional minded clientele, management should advise the hostess and wait staff to avoid the term "you guys" as in "would you guys like to sit here?" and "would you guys like another drink?". In fact, that term should be banned by the entire restaurant industry. Overall though I would recommend this pleasant dining experience. read more
